Larsen Ace is actually the place. For the past gazillion years I've been alive it was always owned and operated by Pfau's Hardware, later Pfau's Ace Hardware. The Larsen family has since take taken the reins with the same great service! If you can't find it, more than likely a staff member will have all ready asked to assist you. For me, there's nothing better than an old Hardware shop with creaky well worn floor boards and narrow aisles. Then throw in a knowledgeable Hardware Fix-It Person - perfection. I came into the store a few weeks ago trying to find a part for my mothers Weber grill. My Mother lives in West Hartford and she's elderly and I visit her often. I was directed to "The Hub" for help. An associate named "Michael Lane" was there. Wouldn't look me in the eye, mumbled under his breath and after a quick few clicks on the computer, brushed me off and said "its not available, go to Home Depot" I felt insulted because I had the part on my phone with the part number on the ace Hardware website!! He refused to investigate further and Dismissed me. As a result I left the store. I will never go back. I felt the associate was condescending, passive racist and looked at me with a look of disgust that I couldnt bother him. It was quite apparent. As both a Black Man and Jewish as well, I expected far better from this Ace Hardware in West Hartford. The associate and my experience was the worst imaginable. I hope some manager reads this and resolves it immediately. read more

As a 20-something who moved away from home, the staff at this Ace Hardware has become my go-to for questions answered, tools for my seasonal gardening and small things such as a change in my car key battery. My canister vacuum needed a new plug which various family members thought they could install. I bought a plug at Larsen's Ace. It was difficult separating the wires and removing insulation from them. I called Larsen's to see if they had a person who could put the new plug on the vacuum. They said, "Of course, just bring it in before 4 pm," which I did and one of the nice men installed the plug while I waited about 15 minutes! I was flabbergasted when they wouldn't let me pay for this so appreciated service. They said, " you bought the plug here." We shop at Larsens regularly and have always been satisfied. Well, today they kicked it up a notch when I visited the store to purchase batteries for two key fobs. As soon as I walked in the door, Michael greeted me with an upbeat, attentive, and genuinely friendly disposition. He proceeded to find the batteries for me, and then he took care of changing them out. For Michael, I'm sure that this falls under the banner of "It's all in a day's work." But, what made all the difference was Michael's attitude. He was positive, proactive, helpful, and certainly a pleasure to work with. That kind of good old fashioned customer service will make any business a standout. read more

I admit, I was skeptical when this hardware store changed to an Ace Hardware from the old Pfau's. And it has gone a little more "corporate," but only superficially. Underneath the slick chain branding, there's still the same creaky wooden floors and most importantly, the same excellent service. Unlike the big box hardware stores like Home Depot or Lowes, you can walk in here and immediately find someone to help you figure out what you need and where to find it. These are hardware experts who know their stuff, and are very happy to help people like me who definitely do not. I chopped through our electric dog fence this past weekend and within a few minutes I had just what I needed to fix it...they even threw in a piece of wire (and stripped it for me) for free. read more

I had a screen repair done for $30.00, and the material was more like heavy cloth than actual screen. I installed it on my front storm door in the spring of 2022, and by July or August, it was coming apart at one of the edges. I called and talked to someone who said to bring it in to be redone. I brought it in, and the gentleman who helped me looked at it and said, "We'll send it out for repair this time." Both of these comments implied to me that they would repair it at no cost, since it was such a short time, and it was obviously so shabbily done the first time. When I went to pick it up, it was done with real metal screening material, and I was pleased...until I was handed an invoice for $50.00. When I objected, the person I talked to said, "We don't guarantee the repairs. Someone pushed on the screen. It didn't push itself." I paid the fee, a total of $80.00 for a proper screen repair. Screens on doors get pushed. They're meant to be able to stand up to some contact!! Larsen got my money, but they've lost my business. read more

I tried to return an item during the peak of the pandemic and they were not taking returns. They said I was going to be able to return it whenever the pandemic was over. 5 years ago I did a review supporting this Ace Hardware. Over the last few years I have experienced a slow reduction in service and quality interaction with staff. Last week I stopped in to get a piece of screening so my wife could use it at the bottom of her flower pots. I went to the desk to purchase a roll of screening. One employee laughed and walked away saying good luck. The other employe said they reserve the screening for "regular customers " because there is a screen shortage do to COVID. I told him, I am a regular customer, and he said nothing personal but he just couldn't do it. I went to Home Depot and found literally hundreds of rolls of screening. This store has (almost) everything, at competitive prices. The staff are the greatest, very helpful and knowledgeable. You can get in and out of here in 33% of the time it would take you to get in and out of a big box store, and you can in most cases buy the quantity you need, instead of a 25-year supply. Even in the few cases where I might pay a tiny bit more for certain items, it's well worth it to support a local business and make sure it's still around in 5 years when I need to run out and get something in a hurry! read more

Formally Pfau's Hardware, the store has been totally transformed into a very unappealing place to shop. Gone is the counter in the middle of the store where you would be happily greeted and assisted with your purchase. The Pfau's team was much more friendly. One would think the Larsen folks would make an effort to meet and get to know the regular customers. There is a counter at the front and rear of the store and they have created a " perch" in the back of the store where other employees ( management?) peer down through glass windows at the shopping floor below. They have installed high shelving stocked with merchandise in between narrow aisles. It's not as " open" as before. I shopped at Pfau's for over 25 years. It was a great store. Willing to give these folks a chance but not impressed thus far. read more

Stop the press, Larson Ace Hardware is across the street from my house. As a contractor for 45 years I'm amazed at how many tools & supplies this store has. And in the basement there's so much more. With traffic so crazy in town, go straight to Larsen first and save yourself a headache of walking miles to find something or finding assistance. And what's better is if you call them they answer technical questions and more on the first or second ring. No going through voicemail hell like at the big box stores. Oh and they carry Benjamin Moore paint, brushes, name brand equipment. Also their isles have sliding walls so you can find just about any hand tool, drill bit, screws, nails, fasteners and so much more. Need cleaning fluid, critter control, soft drinks, licorice (the best), plumbing items, balsa airplanes? This place has everything!!!!!! Larsen Ace Hardware in West Hartford Center is the best hardware store in town. There selection is surprisingly large, given that its floor space is about 1/10th that of Home Depot and Lowe's. Today was my third time in this store with the new owners. It was lunch time and I was looking to get in and out quickly and back to work. I walked in an was immediately helped by a friendly young lady who walked me through the store and helped me find all 6 items I was looking for. She knew exactly where everything was. Prices I think are lower than they were when it was Phau's. Phau's prices on many items were high enough for me to consider driving the extra 10 minutes to Home Depot. Larsen's also seems to have a wider selection than Phau's. The first and second time in Larsen's I was not as impressed with the staff, they did their job, but I was missing the Phau's staff who were very good. Today's experience bumped my overall rating up another star and prompted me to write a review. read more

I'm all about supporting neighborhood Main Street stores - but this ACE has nothing going for it except for location. I come in for random bobs and ends, as I suspect most people do - and they never seem to have what I'm looking for. Pottery Barn didn't mail shelf pegs with my medicine cabinet? ACE doesn't carry this, they send me to Specialty Hardware (which is what the two stars are for - the staff can at least tell me where to shop for what they don't sell). I find the random floor protectors for my parents chairs - wouldn't you know, the two on display are the last ones available, but we'll order more for you - fine, I pay for everything at once and wait for my phone call. I can't go as soon as they call - I work late, they don't; holiday weekends get busy - but when I finally show up, they have lost the order, can't find my name or number in their systems, and if I want this stuff, I have to pay again. Neighborhood stores are supposed to be convenient - I'm willing to pay more than Amazon prices to support the people in my town - but you lose me when you can't do basic business with me. read more
