We were thrilled with Andy and his team. We had just finished a house remodel and our yard was a disaster. Andy created plans for a patio with a raised planter, a short retaining wall to fix our falling fence, and front and rear landscaping. He listened to exactly what we wanted, showed a few additional options, but didn't push us in any direction we didn't want to go. The Project: Site Cleanup, Irrigation, Import Material, Planting, etc. for approximately 0.75 ac of "yard." Andy undertook this project around December 2009, and worked through the torrential rains this past winter. Between the rains and all the other contractors and consultants getting in the way, I commend him for doing an excellent job. His strengths, in no particular order: good communication, fast to respond via email or phone, very hands-on (literally), good understanding of plant material. One particular item I wish to highlight is that Andy wants to educate his customers so they understand what to look out for as their landscape grows out. He also came out a few times after final payment to check on things, which is VERY UNUSUAL for contractors to do. Two minor quips you should be aware of: 1. Andy is not a "yes" man, if you're looking for that type of contractor. But I prefer to know what will realistically happen, rather than get the BS treatment. 2. If you're planning a large project it will take time, because Andy will never run more than 4-5 people at your job. First off, I work for a large commercial construction company in the Bay Area. I have extensive experience working with all sorts of contractors and the last thing that I want to do when I get home from work is worry about any additional construction. Working with Andy, I had no worries when I came home. If there is one word that sums up my experience with Larson Landscaping it would be 'transparency.' Our backyard had not been touched in about 20 years and showed it (see pictures). Andy, worked with our initial design concepts which would match our modern style, and elaborated, tying the design aesthetic with our recently remodeled home. The outcome was better than expected and allowed us to enjoy our backyard as an extension of our home. Working in construction, there are 3 things that contractors are judged on: Budget, Schedule, and Quality. On each of these, Andy gets 5 starts. Budget: After discussing our project budget with Andy, he came up with a design which was on budget. Each of the different areas of scope (ie demolition, concrete, planting, irrigation, etc) were broken out into their individual costs and tracked. At the completion of each of the scope items, Andy would bill for the work. During the project, If I made any changes along the way, he would immediately send me a cost change for the work. If I decreased scope, he credited back the amount based upon the cost tracking, and likewise, when I increased scope. I NEVER had any questions regarding what my final project budget was tracking towards, which is why he gets 5 stars. Schedule: A problem that many contractors have is not being able to properly manage clients expectations and promising too much. They then under deliver and thus client satisfaction drops. THIS IS NOT THE CASE WITH ANDY. From the start of the project, he was honest and direct about how long the project was going to take. We really wanted our project to be completed prior to the arrival of our second child and while Andy said he would TRY to make it happen, he didn't blindly say "Yes." In the end, due to Andy's crews efficiency and our ability to make decision quickly, the project was completed prior to our new baby. For Andy's transparency regarding schedule and then his effort to bring the project completion in sooner, Larson Landscaping gets 5 stars. *Quick side note on schedule: If you are willing to make decisions quickly regarding selection of materials, you can greatly help your project schedule. Delays in decision making or going back and changing your mind cause a project to loose momentum, and thus add time to a project. Quality: Much of a projects quality comes from the construction of items that are not seen once the final planting has occurred. Items such as drainage, soil compaction/base rock/rebar placement for concrete and irrigation greatly impact the way a project looks during the subsequent years and not just on day 1. With my commercial construction background, it was easy to see that Andy builds his projects to a "commercial" standard. This means that he follows the best construction practices from start to finish. There is nothing worse than having concrete installed and then within a couple of months, you see large cracks forming. Due to the work the Andy does BEFORE he pours the concrete, our project looks brand new, even after 6 months. Again, 5 stars for Andy's building quality from start to finish. Andy and his team overhauled our backyard back in 2012. We were finally ready to tackle the front yard this summer and we had no doubt that we would call up Andy again. Coincidently, while getting quotes we discovered that Andy & crew were just finishing a remodel on our friend's backyard in Almaden Valley, so it was nice to confirm first hand with the posts that we were reading. I'm pleased to say that Andy and his crew went the extra mile in all phases of the project. There are not enough words to describe the amazing work that Andy and his team did! He gave us the backyard of our dreams! Our house was brand new and the backyard was absolute dirt! Let me tell you, going in to this we had absolutely no idea what we wanted. Andy (Larson Landscape) just finished up our backyard renovation and I wish I could give him 10 stars!!!! We found Andy through Yelp (be sure to look at the filtered reviews here too) and after interviewing him and several other Landscape designers/contractors decided he was the right fit for the job we had. We needed a sunroom taken down, the entire backyard leveled and essentially a complete redo. Andy first came back with a design that was beyond what we ever could have imagined. He thought about the location of our arbor so that we had a view of the whole yard so we could keep an eye on the kids wherever they were playing and he has a great eye for overall design aesthetics. Along with this design came a budget that was broken down line item by line item, allowing us to determine where and how we wanted to spend our budget. The work was started quickly after we agreed on the work to be done and every day we'd come home from work to see amazing progress. Andy was out every day checking on the job and his team left our yard cleaned up at the end of each day. Whenever I had questions, Andy responded quickly to my emails and phone calls. Larson Landscape even finished our job about 3 weeks earlier than anticipated, which means we get to enjoy our backyard for more of the summer! I said I had the water company out to measure for the rebate program and he said he would have to pass because he didn't work with the program. I never said I was locked into the program but agreed that passing would probably be in the best interest. We found and choose Andy through Yelp. Every review we read was exactly on point, and Larson Landscape was definitely the right company for us. We were so pleased with Andy's work, that I actually created a yelp account, and made a point to review many other companies over time in hopes that my review would not get filtered by the algorithms. Andy designed our backyard, side yards, and front yard. We started with the back due to our own budget and time frame, but he is more than capable of great design work. He also understands all the mechanics of why somethings will work and others will not. We appreciated this more and more as our backyard took place. The foundation he lays as far as planning, drains, soils, etc... will ensure that the project is right the first time and will last. One thing you will really enjoy is that during the planning and quoting process, he breaks everything down line by line, so if you are deciding what to include and why something costs what it does, there is absolutely no confusion. The transparency is very nice to have. We do not have the largest spaces, but Andy made the most of every square inch we had to work with. We even had another type of contractor come out during the project and the guy asked who we were using for the landscaping, we told him Larson Landscape and he said that was his guess, he has worked around a lot of Andy's jobs and he can just tell by the quality of everything and how Andy makes the most use out of the space available. The demo, planning, layout, and construction, all went according to plan. They even finished ahead of schedule. Andy is a GREAT communicator. He listens to you, even though he may already know the answer to your question, before you ask it, he will listen, understand your concern and give you an answer that addresses your concern and educates you as to why he is giving you the answer he is. Andy and his guys are prompt, efficient and always do what they say they are going to do. If a plan changes because of weather or an unforeseen circumstance, he communicates it very well and if it is possible to keep the job moving he does. His crews are very hard workers, they are nice and definitely know what they are doing. Andy and his team are so proficient at what they do that their work almost looks easy. They do not cut corners, everything is done correctly and at the appropriate time. As an example I didn't want my new sprinkler system to rattle the pipes under my house like the old ones did. After completion of our home remodel, it was time to address the front and back yards which were in very poor condition. Our plan was to remove all plants, trees, walkways, patios and driveway and start fresh. We needed a designer and landscape contractor and searched for a company who could provide both. Larson Landscaping was the third company we interviewed and felt very comfortable with Andy Larson (owner) from the beginning. Our challenge was to come up with a design and plan that fit our budget without spending an excessive amount for the design. The first two companies did their design fees on an hourly basis without a cap. Consultation throughout the project would have been extra. Andy offered a design for a set fee of $600 which would be credited toward the project if we chose him as the contractor. He explained the reduced cost was to provide us with a design concept which would allow him to provide a more accurate bid. I didn't feel there was much to lose (others had indicated $2000 + to start a bid) to see a design on paper. After talking with Andy about our ideas for the yard, he provided a plan which amazed us. We only requested a few adjustments in the hardscape dimensions. His bid was quite reasonable compared to other general estimates that were given. The work went smoothly and Andy was always around throughout the project. We love the end result and appreciate Andy continuing to follow up on the landscaping. Those guys worked so hard and carefully and well. All the work was done with such impressive skill and expertise. The work area was left clean and tidy after each days' work and disruption for us was minimal thanks to their efforts. Final results in our yard are spectacular. Andy Larson and his team did a wonderful job making our very small back yard into a beautiful and very usable space. He walked us through the design process and was very clear on the process, expectations, cost elements, etc. so there were no surprises. Andy's design was wonderful. His team installed real used brick patio and walkway which blows us away, and Andy designed and built a lovely and substantial pergola (with lights) for our little outdoor area, as well as installing a gorgeous fountain and lighting on timers so that we can enjoy our yard at night too. His team also trenched and installed a permitted gas line for a built-in barbecue which is super-convenient. Andy designed and installed overhead lighting for the barbecue area too, along with cool cedar and stainless steel trellises which we never would have thought of ourselves but really love. Can't say enough about the great workmanship, the excellent design, and about the professional and ongoing communication throughout the job. Every day we got an update about what was going to happen that day and at the end of the day another update saying how things went. This was one of the best investments we've made in our house -- well worth the money. read more

Hiring Larson Landscape was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Their design for my backyard was amazing, far beyond my imagination, and the final result was more than incredible. Gee, I hope my review doesn't get filtered out like all their other good reviews (make sure you read the filtered reviews as well!). We are very happy with the work Larson Landscape did on our back yard. They redesigned our back yard to give it a more open feel; installed a redwood deck, flagstone patio, irrigation system and lighting; planted new sod/plants; and replaced part of our redwood good neighbor fence. Andy Larson, the owner, will work with you to come up with a design that fits your budget. Initially, we had him include everything we could possibly want. When he gave us the cost estimate, everything was itemized so it was relatively easy to see which items we could eliminate to lower the cost. He will tell you if he thinks something you have in mind won't work (which in my opinion is a good thing and why I'm paying him the big bucks), but he won't try to pressure you into something you don't want to do or try to upsell you. Andy is great at keeping you informed on the status of your project and stops by to check in on his crew at least once a day (usually a couple times). He's very easy to get ahold of if you have questions during your project, and responds to emails quickly. Everyone on the crew is very professional - they showed up on time and they worked hard. I was at home most of the time the work was going on and I never saw anyone standing around goofing off. We also really appreciated that Andy and his crew were very respectful of our neighbors. Our neighbor across the street had trouble getting in/out of her driveway because one of the trailers parked in front our house was so big. Andy replaced the big trailer with a smaller one, even though it would mean more trips for him to empty the trailer. The crew does not go back and forth between other jobs so your project is completed as quickly as possible. We had a couple unexpected issues that changed the scope of the project, but even with the changes, our project was still pretty much on schedule. Andy quickly presented us with options that were acceptable to us and resolved the issues. They were even flexible and worked around our schedule when we realized at the last minute that we should have our outdoor bar area painted before they planted the sod and plants. Once all the work was completed, Andy taught us how to use the sprinkler and lighting controls and gave us tips on how to keep the lawn looking like new. He does not leave you high and dry once he gets his final payment - he stopped by periodically for a few weeks to make sure the plants and new grass were thriving. This was our first time hiring someone to do a big home improvement project. When you're spending this kind of money, you need to feel like you can trust the person you're hiring. From the first meeting we had with Andy, we could tell he was very knowledgeable and he ran his business on the up and up. We would not hesitate to hire Larson Landscape again, and have already recommended them to several people. read more

I highly recommend Larson Landscape. The Project: remove the deck in my townhouse patio and replace it with concrete pavers. The job was done without a problem, on time, in budget, and with great attention to detail. Andy paid particular attention to proper drainage and irrigation for the planting borders . A port-o-potty was provided for the workers so they didn't need to come into the house during the day and they were always on time, neat, and cleaned up the job site every day. We recently had Andy completely tear out our ever-so-ugly front yard (May of 2011) and I just can't say enough about his work. He was referred to me by a friend/co-worker and, of course, the first thing I did was look him up on Yelp! From the moment he showed up at our house to the moment he was done, every detail was spelled out, there was never any surprises, and if Andy didn't like the way something looked, he fixed it (he's a bit of a perfectionist). :) All of his sub-contractors were fantastic and professional, too. I used to be so embarassed by our yard but now when I drive up, I just can't believe it's mine. All of our neighbors and people walking by stop and compliment us all the time! Andy completely landscaped our back and side yards last summer over the course of approximately 8 weeks, which included not only putting in new grass and vegetation, but building a large deck and arbor, veggie planters, privacy screens, garbage choral, new arbor and walkway for the entrance, walkways throughout, kid-safe fences, and a backyard swing. Not only did he given us a nice lawn and pretty landscaping, but his work essentially provides another over-sized outdoor room for us to live in. We spent most of the summer and early fall eating and playing out there!! His attention to detail was fantastic, running from things like ensuring that our gas meter wasn't an eyesore in the newly landscaped area to maintaining the design of our deck - the centerpiece of our landscaping - throughout railings and gates to make the whole thing more pleasing to the eye and pulled together. Andy worked with us and our crazy schedules, making sure that the work was completed as promised with minimal intrusion on our lives and keeping the place clean and kid-friendly throughout the process. He helped us immensely in the design phase, taking into account our ideas and desires and helping us focus and improve these to ensure that the final work held together and providing several options along the way to help us keep within our budget. He checked on the work almost daily, and his contractors were polite, neat, and friendly throughout the process. We loved working w/ Andy (Larson Landscaping) and are so pleased with our new patio. From our first consultation, we felt confident that Andy was the right contractor for us, though he recommended that we consult others too before contracting. Since we needed a sump pump for drainage and a gas line installed and electrical work requiring permits and Homeowner Association approval, it was it was important to us that our contractor be knowledgeable, experienced, and professional. Andy delivered in all regards. We appreciated his candor in advising against our original intent (slate tile on concrete slab recommended by another contractor) due to likelihood of slate chipping and inability to access water pipes underneath in event of emergency flooding (which actually happened to our townhouse neighbor.) He recommended several display showrooms where we could take samples and select our pavers and stone finish on the waterfall and fire pit. We appreciated that he itemized the quote for the entire project so that we could see the impact of different choices. His subcontractors were all skilled craftsmen (masons, plumber, electrical, HVAC) and very polite and professional. Andy was on site daily and very responsive by email/phone to any questions/concerns. I think sometimes I frustrated his natural tendency to drive to closure (not a bad trait to have in a contractor by the way) by my being indecisive at times. For example, I changed my mind on a few plant choices after final payment requiring him to replant but he did so and also fixed a sprinkler head that wasn't working properly. Overall though I was thrilled with his selections of plants including some that I hadn't seen before in nurseries (e.g. Japanese Blood Grass and Variegated Summer-blooming Iris.) His eye for aesthetics is right-on including the choice and placement of lighting fixtures. He even surprised me and went out on his lunch break to purchase a decorative bulb for the porch light when all I had on hand was an ugly compact florescent bulb. We couldn't be more pleased with the finished patio. Andy's work is both structurally solid and beautiful. Our neighbors peek through our front gate and rave compliments. One has already contracted his services. I would highly recommend Andy for his outstanding work and friendly demeanor. read more

My experience with Andy Larson from Larson Landscape met or exceeded all my expectations. I came across Larson Landscape when I was admiring some work that they were doing for one of my neighbors. Living in a townhouse with a modest patio area, I was worried about finding a reputable landscaper that would take on a smaller project. When I saw the work Andy was doing for my neighbor, I knew I had found the guy. Andy first met with me to to discuss what I was looking to accomplish with the remodel. I told him that I was looking for something simple that would make my small space seem as large as possible. Andy drew up the plans and we were off to the races. Andy was a constant fixture on site while the work was being done. We met regularly to review work that had already been accomplished and what our options were for next steps. From the lighting to the plants, I had the final input on which choices we made. The work was done in a timely manner and things were always left in good condition when the crew stopped for the day.
