I recently visited Las Maria's and I have to say--it was absolutely worth the wait. Sundays can get pretty busy, so be prepared for a line, but don't let that discourage you. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere stands out. There's a beautiful display of traditional dress in one of the windows, and as you head toward the restrooms, you'll notice pictures and names of different cities lining the walls--it adds such a unique and cultural touch. The restaurant itself is clean, spacious, and very family-oriented. Even the restrooms were spotless, which always says a lot. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, making the experience even better. And the food? So good I completely forgot to take a picture! I ordered the carne con papas plate with rice and beans, paired with a refreshing pineapple agua fresca--everything was flavorful and satisfying. This place used to be one of my go-to pupusaria's when I lived in the area. I adored the flavors of the cortido. So refreshing and a perfect blend of the carrots and cabbage. The jalapeño surprised me but it was very fun. We were greeted immediately and our server was so sweet. The salvi horchata tasted like my Abuela's and it was so delicious and refreshing complement for the bites of the flavorful harmony of pickled veggies, salsa and pupusa. The pupusas were a wonderful texture and the filling to tortilla ratio was excellent. Super cute decor and warm, friendly service made my heart warm. Go here! We've passed Las Maria's multiple times but never stopped; that was a mistake! It's a quiet little gem with pupusas to die for. The salsa was fresh, the chips were decent and the curtido was flavorful. The waitress was very sweet and checked on us multiple times. And to top all that, dinner for two was under $20! I can't wait until our next visit so I can try the caldo...and of course get more pupusas. read more

Our friends from church had highly recommended this restaurant, but when we got there no one was attending the restaurant. We sat ourselves down. The waitress finally came around after around 10 minutes. She took our order and our food took 40 minutes to get there and there wherw only two tables to wait on. We ordered 4 popusas and 2 cups of beans. Our food came out burned, and the beans and salsa were extremely salty. I should've figured that the food was not good, with It be a Friday in the afternoon. This is a restaurant made for native Hispanics. Not that I let that keep me out because I love El Salvadorian food. (I grew up in Latin America). They answer their phone in Spanish so I get to practice my Spanish doing my to-go orders. Their pupusas are fantastic, as are their chicken tamal, which is wrapped in a banana leaf. I like the corn meal part and just give the chicken pieces in there to my husband since I'm vegetarian. Their hot sauce is also good. It's not a chunky red like we're used to but it's a thinner orangey sauce that's not too hot. Recently, on my last visit, I ordered eight pupusas and two tamales, and it ended up costing about $31. That made five meals between my husband and myself since it also comes with rice, beans and the always present slaw, which is pretty spicy. They don't have black beans like most El Salvadorian restaurant but their pinto beans are pretty good. What you don't necessarily want to go there for is their Mexican food which unfortunately they feel they must have on the menu. Recently, somebody I know went there and ordered the fajitas. He then posted on Facebook that he wished that he had gone to a Mexican restaurant he likes because the fajitas at the El Salvadorian restaurant weren't as good as what he thought they should be. ‍ Hello, not their area of expertise! I would suggest that if you're going to go to a Mexican restaurant, you don't order the American food (which again, they feel compelled to put on their menu) and if you go to El Salvadorian restaurant, you don't order the Mexican items. ‍ read more

I recently visited the Salvadoran cuisine restaurant "Las Marias" in Plano, Texas. Being born and raised in El Salvador I can certainly tell how close the food at "Las Marias" is to the real stuff. I tried pupusas, plátanos fritos, frijoles fritos, yuca frita, chicharrones, sopa de res y tortillas. One item that characterizes El Salvador food, is the pupusas. I have found in several Salvadoran restaurants, that their pupusas do not taste real authentic. The main reason is the difference in texture and flavor of the corn dough. The corn dough of the US-made pupusas comes from commercial corn flour. After cooking, this dough becomes dry and crumbly. The dough in El Salvador is made directly from recently cooked integral corn. Because of the presence of gluten, the dough is firmer and somewhat elastic. Also, coming from freshly cooked corn kernels, the dough smells and tastes like fresh corn. In regard to the fillings, there are differences too. In El Salvador, the cheese for the pupusas is made from a blend of two native cheeses. The cheese used in the US-made pupusas, is either Mexican Oaxaca or quesadilla cheese types. Sometimes, it's just plain mozzarella. Therefore, the cheese texture and the flavor are different. The chicharrón pupusa filling in El Salvador, is made from ground pork rinds fried together with onions and tomatoes. The US-made chicharron pupusas don't use pork rinds at all, but plain deep fried Mexican carnitas. They also have several US-invented fillings that you won't find in El Salvador. The Salvadoran pupusas come traditionally in only three types: cheese, chicharron and fried beans. A fourth option, "revueltas", is made from a combination of the three main ingredients. The rest of the menu at "Las Marias" has a significant Mexican influence, but it's is fairly close to Salvadoran food. Service was as expected from only one server. The restaurant has an ample space and probably they provide live evening shows or social events. The decor was very peculiar, it gave me the impression of being inside an industrial building rather than in a restaurant. read more
