I am STUFFED and I could barely eat half of each Queca. I ordered 1 nopales (cactus) yes, you may eat it :) and 1 papas con chorizo (potatoes with chorizo) and 1 chicharron rojo and 1 beef Tinga. I'm trying to translate all these foods for those who don't speak Spanish, but sometimes you just have to walk in and try something and decided if you like it or not. Everything tasted amazing. I took 2 quecas to go and ate half of 2 there. The total was only $30 and they really stuff these Quecas and you will not leave hungry. I'm honestly shocked they were only $7 each. Love love love this place. Homemade giant quesadillas. They make the food to order so you know the quecas are fresh. They also make the tortillas homemade that's why they are ginormous. Usually one quesadilla fills me up but I would always get more than one . Price isn't bad it's $5 or so for one. COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN It's always the saaaaame Havin' a language breakdown .....and it drives me insane. When you go to a restaurant that's populated by mostly people of the same ethnic background as the employees, that's generally a pretty good sign. Something about the clientele base being a result of the quality or authenticity of stuff coming out of the kitchen (only makes sense, right?? A bunch of Asian families at large tables speaking Mandarin at a Chinese place = likely reputable food) Same holds true for Las Quecas, a place I've been for lunch several times. Without fail, I've been the only Caucasian customer on these occasions but it's never really posed a problem. Yeah, I've occasionally gotten looks although I'm generally too wrapped up in my quesadilla to care if I hear the words "esta pinche gringo". What's interesting about this business is the noticeable lack of English.....anywhere. The promotional posters, the TV's, even the menu is written 'en espanol' which makes it tough for a pasty guy like me who took 5 years of German and 0 years of Spanish. Ordering hasn't been a problem because "burrito" is easy to communicate and the staff have spoken fluent English. Until today. I stepped up to the register and asked if the taco platter came with rice & beans. Blank stare. I repeat myself. "que?" Oh terrific, I've heard that word enough times to know where this conversation was headed. Sure enough, I had to resort to hand gestures and wild gesticulations to get my (rather simple) question answered. Not a word of English was uttered from her. At some point another worker intervened and was able to help out, even though I was left dazed and thoroughly confused. I never actually got a 'sorry for the trouble' or even a 'thank you', just a deer-caught-in-the-headlights look. I ALWAYS make an effort to say a few words in the native tongue of whomever is serving me. Greek, Cantonese, French, Czech, I know several of the basic phrases but the other person's gotta meet me halfway. They can't - and shouldn't - assume I'm fluent in their language. Food-wise, I captured those thoughts in a previous review. The horchata is tasty, the homemade quesadillas are wonderful and the condiment cart has some nifty things to pick from, including some onions marinated in habanero juice. The orange and red salsas on the far left should be avoided at all costs. They're too spicy for any mortal creature to handle and could result in a very painful, chili pepper-laced murderdeathkill. What bothers me the most is that I find it VERY hard to believe I'm the only non-spanish speaking person that comes in here to dine. If the employees can't properly assist their guests by interacting with them in the host country's language, what's the point of returning? Bread = 4 Circuses = 1.5 Honestly (and it pains/scares me to say this), I foresee this embarrassing episode repeating itself if I were to come back here. Maybe they'll have taken a Rosetta Stone crash course in English by then, maybe not. Maybe I'll wind up looking like a giant idiot and once again stick out like a sore thumb while all the other patrons stare at me. My credit card might be welcomed here with open arms, but I'm certainly not. read more

The tortillas are thick, unique, homemade, and great. The service is fast and very friendly. And it really is a deal. The reason for the low rating is because of the fillings. I ordered the mushroom quesadilla and was surprised to find that the mushrooms inside were canned, even though the menu online describes them as "fresh mushrooms sauteed with tomatoes, onions, and cilantro." Not so. I couldn't finish my quesadilla because the briny tin taste was so strong. I love a good salsa bar, too, but all of them were so spicy! I'm ready to admit that I'm a wimp but it would be nice to have at least one wimpy option available. They offer a variety of meats to add to your quesadilla from asada (steak), chicken, tinga de pollo (pulled chicken in a spicy sauce), Rajas (thinly sliced charred cooked and peeled poblano peppers, ropa veija (typically that's a Cuban stew and it's not spicy... here it's made very differently and is spicy). There's many more meats I'm sure I'm leaving out. Pay attention to the menu board!! When something is marked as spicy- it REALLY IS SPICY! You place your order at the front and pay. From there you can watch your tortillas being handmade, pressed and deliciously made into the most authentic quesadillas ever! This is a seat yourself establishment. Your food is brought out to you. After you are served your food, head on over to the salsa bar. There you will find about 6 different homemade salsas for you to try. My favorite was the peanut one. Sooo good! First of all, this establishment is NOT Vegetarian and DEFINITELY NOT Vegan. The first thing I saw when I pulled up is a big neon sign that said, "MORE MEAT!" I was with a meat eater, and though it was our second attempt at finding a vegetarian restaurant, we ended up giving them a try. The service was good, they were polite. But the vegetarian burrito I ordered was bland, no real flavor/seasoning to it. A place that caters to vegetarians and vegans will understand that a protein substitute will be the element to season for a robust flavor in a vegetarian burrito. Without that, rice, beans, lettuce and tomato alone are not going to produce a flavorful meal. This is a meat eaters place with the bare minimum vegetarian options (they just don't add meat, but where is the flavor?). My review just about echoes Allison M's review in Feb 2016. It's good, but nothing special. I ordered a steak quesadilla, maybe there was "more meat" but just a tad at best. It had some flavor, but didn't wow me. I've had better quesadillas before. To try a little more, I also ordered some salsa and chips. Chips were ok - I've had better and worse. Salsa was the verde salsa which in the world of Las Quecas is one of the milder ones, but in the gringo reality world, it was smokin' hot. There were other salsas on the salsa bar, but only the pico de gallo was milder. To me, a salsa or spice should enhance the primary dish that one is consuming. Any sauce or salsa that dominates a dish might as well be eaten with rice cakes, because you're not eating the entrée, you're eating the salsa/sauce. Not sure if I'll be back. With so many Mexican places in the area and several that are better, it just doesn't seem practical to return. read more

Ever since we found out about this little gem in Melrose Park, we cant get enough of their quesadillas..which is not necessarily good for our waistline...Husband usually always orders two and this despite the fact that they are pretty big. The quality of the food is very good and the place looks very clean. Since this is becoming a very popular spot among the locals, it does get crowded quickly as they do not really have a lot of tables to sit at so that is my one dislike about this place but as far as the food and the service goes - it has always been phenomenal. Besides Mexico, this is as good as it gets in the city to getting a taste of true Mexican Quesadillas from homemade corn tortillas. Oh and don't even get me started on their coffee. Their coffee is beyond delicious. Mexican Cafe de la Olla usually contains a hint of cinnamon so if you do not mind the added ingredient, you will get hooked on this coffee.
