It is not natural to me to allow someone to start carving on my eye with a sharp object. He answered all my questions well and tolerated my quizzing him. I could see he was focused on solving the problem. Add to this a lovely personality. The guy laughs, smiles, and is just enjoyable to be around. He listens. He even answers his own office phone if no one is available. Which tells me treats his office as a team and all his patient's calls are important to him. He has good availability; I didn't find myself on a waiting list just to get an appointment. My surgeries were scheduled within a week. His office stayed on top of my insurance. Now it is all done and my eyes are better than new. Having my eye site back is a gift. Colors are now vibrant; I can see details far away. Dr. Merkley was referred to me by one of his peers, which tells me he is viewed within his own circles favorably. They're incredibly fast and efficient, but they also take the time to answer any questions or make any changes you might need. As a black and white person, I had expected just what I had read, but it wasn't "quite" as expected. On the day of surgery, I arrived an hour early and got a series of drops, four at a time. They told me it was painless, but the first eye I did experience some discomfort, which lasted about 24 hours. The next eye, I got one more drop of numbing liquid, and that did the trick. Everyone is different, so I can't say for sure if this will happen to you. I will say that the best way to spend the day of surgery is to sleep if you can. Mild pain relief is a must, and the healing process is as fast as described. I had a scratching feeling, but that went away in 24 hours. So far, the results have been great. I chose the best lenses so I could finally get rid of my glasses. Before, I had to wear them for everything. Two weeks out, I don't need glasses for anything, and you won't the next day! That said, it's not all roses. My current vision is around 20-25. Will it improve? Driving at night, I have bright rings around things like traffic lights! Some people say it will go away, while others say you get used to it. I'm a bit nervous because I love to travel, and I'm not comfortable driving at night right now. This is a process, and your mind needs time to adjust to the changes. I'll keep my positive attitude and see where this takes me.
