The steaks were decently cooked. But not worth the price with only a salad & potato as 1 side. Should have had asparagus or Brussels sprouts, definitely needed it. Not like it is a higher level which charges individually for sides. So basically a potato option only. The service was good considering we had one server for 15 people, she was kept hopping for sure. On the positive side they let me come in early to decorate and kept 2 cakes refrigerated until they served it at the end of our meal. We also made reservations for 8:30, but our event ended early & they said we could come earlier. Once we got there we found out they close at 9:00 pm. Hoping for a nice New Years Eve dinner was to great of an expectation. Where do I begin? Taking into consideration that there were only three wait staff for approximately 20 tables, did not compensate for the overpriced menu. One side of the restaurant is Mexican food with a shared kitchen adjacent to the steak house. The atmosphere reminds me of a meeting hall with the bar as the center piece, highlighted with 100 watt bulbs on every wall for that cafateria ambiance. My husband ordered a Long Island Ice Tea that was so over poured with alcohol that we got three for the price of one glass. I ordered a cranberry and vodka that was just that, half and half, one sip will do. We were given, as a starter I can only guess, a plate with a few carrots and celery sticks with a bowl of ranch dressing. Something I would give my grandson for a snack. The bread came out, literally out of the bag, cold, pre sliced, and placed on a cutting board with margarine. It could not get worse, you would think, but it did. My husband ordered the New York with a baked potatoe. His steak was made to order, flavorful, and seared correctly. His potatoe was dehydrated from sitting in a steamer or warmer for a day or two. I ordered the Porterhouse cooked medium with a salad and fries. The salad arrived as a bowl of store bought premixed iceberg drowned in dressing. My steak arrived raw, blood on the plate, with previously frozen French fries trying to be fresh. Plus: steaks are ample portions and when cooked correctly, with a strong drink from the bar, you might get your monies worth. Lassen Steak House is the hidden gem you hear about in small towns. Lassen is in the same building as the El Tepeyac Mexican Restaurant. Its unknown because neither place has a web presence - yet. Ester the owner of both and her family, run both places are small town nice. The food in Lassen is great. So here is my story how I found them: I give dinner seminars , around 50 a year to get clients for my practice and do this all over NoCal. You can imagine I know a lot of restaurant owners and GMs and have had many interesting interactions with them all. The local casino booked my event and a week before the it, cancelled it because I was 'not right for the casino!'. Never have had that happen the decades I have been giving these dinners but none the less, they did me a favor. I found Ester and her family by accident on Yelp. I arranged to move all our guests who signed up over to Lassen Steak House within 5 minutes and when I arrived on the designed night, Ester had the room set up and ready to go. I have had steak in every place on the west coast from the Golden Steer in Las Vegas(the best) to 5th Street Steakhouse in Chico (overrated), I think you get the pic. Lassen is great. This will be a 'live' review folks. Just walked in. The sign inside the door says Steakhouse left, El Tepeyac Grille right. I go left. There is no one in here. The wife and I seat ourselves. The place is well lit. Like operating room on an UFO lit. It's been three minutes and we're still alone. Completely alone. Did someone accidentally leave the door unlocked? Wait, some lady just walked in and put dishes away behind the bar like a church mouse! Shhh. Not a word. Minute five. Ah, here is our waiter. Ordered a Gin and Tonic. He's making it behind the bar without a sound. It's just us and him. AWKWARD. Drinks served! We're alone again. I think my waiter is the only one working. Like maybe the only one in the entire building; maybe the only one in town. I think he's the cook too. Maybe he's really busy in the Mexican restaurant side. I'll ask. I was right, they're really busy next door. He said there are two people next door and a third person just walked in. We're alone again. So alone. Salads came out. Mediocre but fresh. Must've just opened a bag. Breads out! Yay carbs. Looks like it is fresh out of the bag too. Not Wonder Bread here but something more classy, like Orowheat. And it's warm . But not microwave warm. Oven warm. Bet he popped it in the oven while he was opening the salad bag. The food is here! Lovingly plated on what I'm assuming is surplus trays from the local prison mess hall. Okay people, this part of the review is legit. I ordered the Delmonico Potatoes and steak. Never heard of them before but they were awesome! Fantastic. I'm not kidding in the slightest. The steak was cooked perfectly. The Delmonico sauce was on the side. Now I like my steaks unadorned-a little salt n pepper maybe-nothing else. I actually used the sauce, it was fantastic and I applied it liberally, which, in hindsight, seems a shame because the steak was really, really good. Church yo. Honestly, the only thing that almost ruined our dinner was the other patron who walked in. I thought the wife and I would have to stop watching Breaking Bad, which at this point we were binge watching on her phone since the place was EMPTY and just staring at each other was weird. No worries though, dude was only looking for the waiter and soon left. Back to Heisenberg. Honestly, I really enjoyed myself. Was going to give it a 2 star but the food was excellent. Our waiter (never caught his name) was a really nice guy. This is a small town and the fact it even has a steakhouse is great. Don't be too hard on them. The best steak I've had in Susanville! This restaurant is adjacent to the El Tepeyak. You walk in through the same door & then head to the LEFT. They open for dinner only during the week, & that starts at 5 pm. I've never been here on the weekends, so you may want to call & ask for those hours. The steak is delicious & they're desserts sound heavenly. They also have a full bar. The thing they do not have are appetizers, but they bring out bread & veggies to snack on before your meal & that was more than enough for me! I was nearly full before my steak arrived, lol The service is very friendly & our server was a very colorful character who knew all there was to know about steak & loved giving recommendations. read more

So good, please treat yourself to this steak. If you don't want it too hot the are extremely accommodating to make everything just the way you want it. The wife and I just had dinner here. Frankly, I'm not a steak person but my wife is so we went. Well the place is in the same building as a Mexican restaurant so I asked if I could order a dish from the Mexican menu and they agreed. So both I and my wife got what we wanted. Big plus! Overpriced & poorly prepared. This place has all the atmosphere of a Dennys. It's late December and the steakhouse is COLD. We ordered four ribeye steaks, all four were cut differently. We ordered three medium well, and one well done. After waiting 45 minutes, all our steaks were brought out RARE. I spoke with the owner about it and she said because those were the first steaks of the night they were not cooked right. Apparently that justifies the poorly prepared food. The atmosphere is very Denny's like. The room itself, is very loud. So if you are looking for something quiet and romantic, this is not the place. The service was standard. Friendly. The price for what you get seems to be quite expensive. I ordered a $25 ribeye steak. To my disappointment, the steak was about a half an inch thick. The potatoes on the plate were great but then again, they were not that special. Something that you could probably make at home very easily. My wife ordered the fillet mignon. It came out cooked exactly like we ordered it. The fillet was much thicker than the ribeye, but there was not much flavor in it. This place was pretty empty tonight the day after Thanksgiving but it didn't deter from any of the food or great service we got from Jewels. She started us off with some cold fresh carrot and celery sticks with ranch dressing. That was followed by a big salad with mixed baby greens and warm bread and whipped butter. I ordered their petite New York steak and it was huge. I could barely eat half. I'd hate to see the regular size. My husband had the rib eye steak which was also huge and delicious. Both steaks were perfectly cooked to order, mine rare and his medium rare. Then we had to punish ourselves and got a fried ice cream with peaches and whipped cream it was like a warm peach cobbler with a crunchy crust, delicious and big enough to feed 3 people. Not just the best steak in Susanville--possibly one of the best steaks I've ever had. VVSP and I were on a motor trip that took us through Susanville. At the end of the day we were tired and hungry. On Maggie F.'s recommendation, we went to Lassen Steaks (note name; I've also seen it as Lassens (sic) Steaks). I started off with a Margarita and VVSP had a large Blue Moon draft. ("Large" doesn't quite cover it: we could have jumped in and swum laps.) The server and his helpers were cordial and treated us like royalty. They bring you bread and a bowl of chilled celery and carrot sticks with dip--a nice, homey touch. VVSP had the brochettes, which he loved. I had the ribeye, which was a gorgeous steak and cooked perfectly--tender, moist, and flavorful. The wine list is simple but adequate, especially for a small town. We had a Cabernet that was just fine. For dessert, we didn't want to make the commitment to their fried ice cream, as wonderful as it sounded, so our server served us each a scoop of vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce. Our tummies were full and our souls were happy. Good food combined with friendly, efficient service made our stop in Susanville a memorable one. We'll be back. read more

My friend and I wanted to try Lassen Steak House since we were staying overnight in Susanville. We were greeted with carrots and celery with a 1/4 full cup of ranch. When the bread came it was a store bought pre-sliced sourdough bread out of the bag, and frozen butter. Classy. Salad was the spring mix from the store and they said the salad dressing was not made in house either. My friend got the petit sirloin and the favor was good, she wasn't sure it was a fresh steak though. I got the grilled chicken "San Francisco" style which meant a glop of cheese mixed in with sautéed onions and bell peppers. We are disappointed enough to write this review and warn others. On the other hand, the Mexican restaurant on the other side of the building has been excellent every time we have visited. read more

This was the worst experience I have ever had at a so-called "steak house". The place was very outdated and ugly. It seems to share the same servers and kitchen as the Mexican food place right next door...which is not a good thing in my opinion. They brought us veggies and ranch dip upon sitting. The veggies looked old and dry...like they had been sitting out for hours...possibly days. The menu was small and the items on it were rather highly priced. I have a gluten allergy and asked my server a few questions about the menu. I ordered a New York strip (well done) with Delmonico potatoes (which were not described on the menu...and the server didn't have a clear idea of what was in them.) and a salad with ranch dressing. The food took awhile to come even though we were only one of three tables in the place. Once it came I noticed that the steak was not well done, it was burnt to a crisp on one end. The Delmonico potatoes were not twice baked as the server explained. More like under cooked! They were hard, tasteless and had bread crumbs on top....which is a major issue being gluten free. The server had told me upon ordering that there wasn't any gluten in them. I was extremely disappointed with my meal and left vowing to never return. It was an over priced meal that was burnt, tasteless and full of gluten! I know this because later that night was so ill...I puked my guts out for hours because of the hidden gluten in that gross meal. Save your money. Go to Safeway and buy your own steak, potatoes and salad. You can make it better and save yourself a load of money...not to mention trips to the bathroom! read more

About as far from a classy joint as you can get. Steak sauce was apparently diluted with water. We asked for real butter instead of margarine for our bread. Server came back and told us they don't have butter. Huh? You are a STEAK HOUSE. A few minutes later they came back with some butter they had found which was rank and tasted like a refrigerator. Let me start off by saying that my husband & I come here often, we probably spend about $200 per month at this place. As of yesterday, we will NOT be back! My family booked this place for my step dad's retirement dinner next Saturday. My mom called last night to confirm and Esther, the owner of the place, told my mom that since she didn't have my moms last name that she (Esther) had put someone else in our spot. I waited an hour for my food, and when it came it was horrible! My well done steak was burnt! And the chicken strips were over cooked and tasted like they were old my fries also tasted burnt. Then when I asked for my leftovers to be put in a box, the waiter who took the cash for the check used his hands to put my food in the box. Disgusting! I left the box there.
