Really at a cross roads reading the other reviews after our lunch experience here. This vibes were cozy and everyone at the door was welcoming and friendly. And that's where it pretty much ended for me. We were greeted by 2 individuals prior to being sat. Once we were sat I was told I couldn't have any outside drinks. I was carrying a hot tea in a paper cup when we walked in. No one else mentioned this. I later read a posting in the bathroom about outside drinks being prohibited. Seemed like it was mostly to prevent outside alcohol but was a blanket statement for all drinks. I thought it was odd I had to take my hot tea back to my car. Besides that the waitress wasn't super warm and friendly either. If I remember correctly she started with, "what are you drinking?" After I had to walk my tea to our parked vehicle. The food was mid. Very very mid. I got a salmon savory crepe. The salmon was dry, almost white in color and just seemed old. The crepe itself was chewy and hard to cut. My husband's wrap was decent. Kids plates were also decent. I liked that you "created" their plate from 3 categories or options. Overpriced for quality and portion. Once our food arrived there was a swarm of gnats that came with it. Our table was wobbly so cutting any food shook the entire surface. Our toddler caught on to this and wanted to rock the table the whole time. So between holding the table, trying to cut food and swatting gnats away.. it just wasn't a good experience all together. I'm confident there are better options in town for us to try when we return. read more

Crepes are the star here, so definitely get a crepe! They have sweet crepes and savory crepes, and we got one of the classic sweet options with Nutella, berries and whipped cream. It was big enough to share with three people! This is the type of restaurant that has silly names for everything on their menu. For example, Crepes of Wrath is a savory crepe with sausage, and Banana-fo-Fana has bananas and granola in it. Usually, I refuse to say these silly names out loud when I order, and instead will just order according to the ingredients. ("Give me the Nutella and berries crepe.") I know. I'm that person! You don't want to take me to a silly-names restaurant, because I will ruin your silly-names experience. In this case, though, the silly names are so pervasive throughout the menu that I was overwhelmed and I just gave up. Sometimes, you just have to grit your teeth and play along. Yes, I did say, "Give me the Last Tango." Before the crepe, though, we got lunch. Later Alligator has a huge sandwich menu. At least two dozen different sandwiches! Then there's wraps, salads, appetizers and a kids' menu. I got the Fowl Play (sigh), which is chicken salad with lettuce and tomato on a croissant. My oldest kid got the Club Car, which included ham, turkey, Swiss cheese and lettuce. In case you were wondering: The silly names extend to the kids menu, too! (Which Wich Tuna Fish is just one example.) My younger kid got the Munchkin (mac and cheese). The kids' mac and cheese here is a mini cup, so just keep that in mind if your child eats a lot. Both of my children eat like birds, so the size of the mac and cheese wasn't a problem for us. This is also the type of restaurant that has interesting things everywhere you look (including the restroom!), so take some time to look around at all of the paraphernalia everywhere. read more

I noticed Later Alligator on my Maps "Explore" tab and decided to give it a try - I must say that I'm very glad about that. Located in a historic downtown building, the space has tons of character. The vibe is relaxed and many Wheeling Steel relics adorn the walls and other spots throughout the dining area. There are patios front and rear, so there's plenty of options for outdoor dining. I ordered the Strawberry Brie Zze... It sounded so good - fresh strawberries, basil, Brie and deli turkey with jalapeno strawberry jelly. It arrived at the table hot and fresh with golden crusty bread, lots of gooey Brie and plenty of turkey! However, the sandwich had hardly any strawberries inside and the jelly had no noticeable jalapeno kick. The chips and pickle were both good. I enjoyed my cocktail - A Long Island Iced Tea from their menu. It was definitely better than a premixed drink, but nothing great to set it apart. Later Alligator offers a downtown location with lots of seating and dining options, friendly service and quality food. I'll visit again and hope that I can get a strawberry filled sandwich, upon my return! read more

My mother, daughter, and niece all really like this place and raved about the meal they'd had here on a previous trip (that I wasn't apart of) so I was really looking forward to it. I opted for a salmon crepe and the tomato basil soup. I really enjoyed the soup but the salmon in the crepe was a little too fishy for me, I still cleaned my plate though. Again the other members of the group all raved about their meals. I'd definitely return but I think I'd try something different next time. read more

I've tried multiple times, and every time, once we are seated it takes quite a while for servers to arrive. Food takes a long time to arrive, and then good luck finding your server to get your check. Also for a simple sandwich and (sometimes) a handful of chips, it's expensive. As much as Wheeling needs more original restaurants, this ones generally a miss. read more

We live a restaurant with personality and this place delivers! The decor is fun with lots of historic memorabilia. We went on a Tuesday when the special was $2 beer- even craft beer! The citrus and blueberry mock tail was very good too. For dinner we shared the apple and peanut salad with curry dressing (yum), the Guac around the clock crepe and the crepes of wrath. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the food was excellent. I would highly recommend this place as a brunch outing or otherwise. This is my favorite place between Pittsburgh and Columbus. Well worth a stop off the highway. The crepes are delicious and the selection of them is amazing. Sweet, savory, you name it. Just some lunch meat and tomato that tasted like cardboard, the crepe wrapping was rubbery and did nothing for the meal. I tried a bit of the other sandwiches ordered by friends, nothing there to jump up and down about. Maybe it was all the hype, but I was definitely disappointed. Would I go back? Not on my own, but if I'm there again I'd try a salad or the soup and see how that is. Courtyard looked nice and ambience was decent. Drinks menu had good options. Bathroom needed to be serviced. Conclusion: eat before you go and grab a drink in the courtyard. read more

What a gem! I had the blueberry and Brie crepe, which was essentially breakfast for dinner. My son had a very generously portioned kids meal, and I tried some of the mac & cheese which was absolutely delicious. Cocktails were on point, and the service was fantastic. We loved Cindy! She even brought my toddler some goldfish to munch on before our food came out! Decor is lovely. I love the tin pressed ceilings and the cozy bar ambiance. Wheeling is really making strides to bring vitality to the Market district, and Later Alligator is an essential part of that! We need more places like this in the world. We really enjoyed Later Alligator while visiting Wheeling! the restaurant is unique with a creative menu, including lots of vegetarian and vegan options. They even had an organic cider. We started out with drinks, Brewdog Jet Black Heart (oatmeal stout) for me, which was as creamy and smooth as they get! and a Swilled Dog Hard Cider, Caramel Apple) for Christopher. We got the brie with crackers, honey, and candied walnuts for our appetizer. So good! for our entrees, Christopher had the All Hat and No Cattle crepe, which he loved. I dipped some chips into the Mornay sauce that topped it and it was great! I had the Over the Edge Tacos, which was stuffed with sweet potatoes, black beans, avocados, and feta, served with a delectable Greek yogurt and avocado dressing. Outrageously good! We were visiting WV Northern Community College and walked to this local spot. It's so eclectic and filled with so much Wheeling history. The staff was sweet and helped make suggestions as I was debating between a wrap or a crepe. The crepe escape was amazing. The rosemary really made the dish. It was very filling and I left completed satisfied! My friend got the tuna sandwich and she stated it was Delicious! I wasn't able to grab a pic of her meal, but so much tuna salad on the sandwich! Both sandwiches were tasty, the side of chips that came with it were stale. The crepes were good but very chewy and dry. My biggest issue was I went in during lunch time hungry (after driving 4 hours) and left...hungry. The crepes were the ONLY item on the plate. While I enjoyed the Salmon Says crepes it is not worth the $15 price for what you get. Service was average friendly, but not particularly warm and welcoming to our diverse group. However, I will try it again next time I pass through beautiful Wheeling. read more
