Lomo Saltado

D E L I C O U S! I love Peruvian food and the Latin Chef has made a mark in Oceanside. Authentic flavors and sizzling meats accompanied by rice or noodles! We ordered Pollo Saltado and Tallarin Saltado De Res. Both dishes were cooked well and very flavorful. I loved that the Latin Chef Saltados was not salty. I am looking forward to my next visit and I want to try the ceviche, it looked refreshing! Ambiance has plenty of table service. The owner very friendly and is the host and server.

I absolutely loved my experience at Latin Chef Peruvian! The food was delicious and full of authentic Peruvian flavor. We ordered jalea, and everything was perfectly crispy, fresh, and beautifully served with sarza criolla, yuca, and cancha--just like home. The service was friendly and attentive, and the restaurant feels welcoming from the moment you walk in. Oceanside is lucky to have a spot like this. Highly recommended if you want real Peruvian food done right!

Aji De Gallina

Great food! At least what we tried! I had to ask for the Aji De Gallina and luckily it was a special for that day! Too bad it's not on the staple menu as it's my favorite dish. I guess I'd have to call each time. I did suggest to them that they should have it on the menu. The service was great, it was served fast so, I hope they are here to stay... so, come on over and adventure on food, my friends- you won't be disappointed.

This is one of my favorite places to come eat some Peruvian cuisine! The ceviche mixto is fire! I've also had the lomo saltado and it is fabulous!

If you want authentic Peruvian food this restaurant is for you! Everything from the ceviche, chaufa and lomo saltado were flavorful and tasty. The seafood saltado and papa a la huancaina were our favs. Service was good and food came out after about 15 minutes. We asked for bread, but they didn't serve any which was too bad. I love bread with the green sauce! We were raving about this place and some friends also ordered it for an upcoming birthday dinner. I'd love to see them offer ají de gallina on their menu or even as a special. Other: Lots of parking. I don't think they have a liquor license. Small but clean restaurant. Glad we have a good Peruvian place in North County now and I don't have to go all the way to East SD. Chef and staff know what they are doing and It shows!

I'm relatively new to Peruvian cuisine however I've really enjoyed each entree here! Every visit I look forward to a new dish knowing it's going to be a rainbow of flavors cooked to perfection. The waitresses are always really wonderful answering any questions I have and giving me recommendations on which dish, drink or dessert to try. Seating is plentiful inside with two big screens showcasing beautiful nature scenes from around the world. I look forward to returning!

I remember the flames.  In my kitchen they flicker like a candle.  Here they are like the sun itself.  Fire reaches for the ceiling.  It envelopes the wok and imparts the food with a delicious smoky flavor unlike any other place I have eaten. I've been a fan of Latin Chef since I tried them at Liberty Station.  This new spot is much nicer.  Smoky scent from the flames led me to Chef Tony. I ordered the lomo saltado.  Tomatoes had a delicious smoky flavor.  Fries were covered in tasty sauce.  Steak was tender and full of beefy flavor with a hint of sweetness.  Great tasting dish. Lucuma ice cream had a delicious sweet flavor a bit like butterscotch. 2nd visit I tried the beef fried rice.  Loved the smoky flavor imparted from the wok.  Beef was tender and full of flavor.  I miss the bean sprouts Tony added to this dish in the old days.  This new version is very tasty but I loved how the bean sprouts balanced this dish with some added moisture. I also ordered a papa rellena.  The potato part was soft and fluffy.  Inside was beef and part of a hard boiled egg.  Loved the flavor from the beef and I would have preferred more beef to the egg. It was great seeing Tony again.  Tony and his staff always greeted me with a friendly smile.  Looks like Tony is working here every weekend.   I love eating at the Latin Chef for the excellent hospitality and delicious Peruvian food. Pescado a lo Macho

5 stars for me is "I can't wait to go back". This restaurant is definitely that. It was Muy Delicioso. Flavorful, plentiful, very well seasoned, there is something for everyone here. All the plates we have seen out of the kitchen were looking awesome. Talking about the kitchen, when they say open flame on the menu they mean it :-) there are a LOT of flames, not for the show but for flavor. The pollo saltado was super tasty and vey well seasoned. The Pescado a lo Macho was so so good and a bounty of seafood. On a Friday lunch it was quite busy, and I totally understand why. I can't wait to go try other dishes :-)

THE LATIN CHEF : Peruvian Cuisine is Oceanside's latest addition to the Latin food scene and it just opened up January 2024. The Latin Chef has other locations, including their premier Liberty Station. This location is on Oceanside Blvd. in the Oceanside Marketplace, where Ceja's Mexican used to be. There's some parking spaces out front, but it's very cramped when it gets crowded and it's difficult to maneuver with many vehicles around. The interior is very basic and simple, with slightly dimmed lighting to set the relaxing ambiance. There are a few photos of the owners and 2 pieces of art. Very plain almost. It lacks greenery, plants or anything that is native to Peru that would give it true character. But it is very spacious inside and it's good for group seating. The chairs are lightly cushioned and there's one long "booth" seating area on the side. Service is friendly and relatively fast. They whipped up my Lomo Saltado in under 10 minutes. Although there's a slight language barrier, the servers know enough English to take my order correctly. Their menu range starts rather high and most dishes are $21-$24; but this is typical for a business to survive in this location. My lomo saltado was delicious and was a fair potion size. They only have 2 beverages on the menu and the chícha morado drink was tasty (reminded me of a Jamaica). Overall, The Latin Chef is a nice addition to the Latin dining scene in the area, although there is a Peruvian restaurant just down the street. But I like that this one is a tad bit more intimate and better for group seating. Instagram : @thelatinchef_oceanside : Formerly Ceja's Mexican : 760-201-8997

Lomo Saltado

I've been missing Panca so I was excited to see this place come up on Yelp. We placed a to-go order for their Lomo Saltado (mine) and the Saltado de Pollo (my husband's). They gave us two containers of their spicy green sauce. I would have been bummed but my husband doesn't like spicy food so I got his. Unfortunately I had to use all of both sauces, scraping it all out of the bottom, because there wasn't much flavor in the food. I thought there were way too many fries. The meat was tender and I liked the crunch of the red onion. I don't think I'll be back. My husband will have to stop at the Inka Grill on his way home from Orange County. If I could give half stars I would have rated 3.5

Lomo Saltado
Anastasia D.

I was expecting a lot more freshness from this dish as it's a total of 22 dollars. Not only was it lacking in fresh flavor, it was also very greasy and the fries were soggy and more than likely frozen. This is not what you would expect from Peruvian cuisine. I don't recommend. If you're looking for fresh, authentic Peruvian food please check out the restaurant/ food stall "Kuntur", you can find them at Leucadia farmers market as well.

I drove into the center just to see what was there, and that's when I found Casera. The pictures in the window caught my eye, so I figured I'd stop in and try a few empanadas. The woman behind the counter told me they had three kinds that day: spinach and cheese, chicken, and beef. I ordered two of each and literally cleaned her out. From the moment I walked in, the place had such an authentic, family-run feel -- you can just tell when food is made with care. She asked if I wanted hot sauce, and I told her I love hot sauce. She handed me both a salsa verde and a salsa rojo, and man... after the very first bite (I started with the chicken), I completely lost my mind. I added the sauces and went to town. Before I knew it, I had eaten all six empanadas. I am ridiculously full right now, but they were so good I honestly couldn't stop myself. If I had ordered a dozen, I would've eaten a dozen. Thank you for being here, thank you for the amazing food, and thank you for giving me something to look forward to every week. I'll definitely be back.

I've had everything from their saltado dishes, empanadas of various kinds, an assortment of their pastries, and ready to go drinks. Everything has been good for the most part. Tho when I'm craving a dessert stop here I favor the guava pastry and the alfajores, & you have to special order the cheese Pastry/bread. I'm a huge fan of "pudim" that's how you say flan in Portuguese! Yet the flan is not my favorite here since the sugar caramelization it's usually cooked too much, causing a burnt flavor, and the consistency is too aerated rather than having a creamy and smooth consistency. I've tried it a few times and that seems to be their consistent style. We get cravings for this place and like that we're mainly serviced by the nice owners of this restaurant. The restaurant is decorated in their native culture in mind. I love that! If you're craving a good empanada or a sweet tooth treat come and give them a try!

So we took the coast and enjoyed the long way to the restaurant so we could get there at the right time. No issues parking, but we went during a slow time. It's off steet parking, there's not a parking lot, but again we found plenty of spots right in front of the restaurant. They have pretty and colorful decor. Fun lights and beautiful flowering tree coverage. Seating is outdoors so dress accordingly. I knew this because we've enjoyed dining here a few times, so I actually used my little throw blanket. It's causal but some Couples dress up and eat here too. Server was great. He was tentative and nice. I knew I wanted the shrimp causa and my daughter's favorite Peruvian dish is Lomo saltado, so thatd what she ordered. He told us about the specials so we went with trying the baked scallops. I'd asked for 2 and he accidentally brought 4 but immediately realized and without us having to even ask, he offered to take the extra two off. So grateful he caught that. My daughter doesn't like scallops and I just wanted to try them. I like sea scallops but these were bay scallops. I never asked so I shouldn't have assumed. It was a tasty appetizer, talked my daughter into trying it but she wasn't interested to try more. She loves Parmesan cheese and there was a lot but she wouldn't attempt the scallops. They were not under nor over cooked. I'm not sure what made it taste so unique but we both agreed we've never tasted anything like it. The shrimp causa wasnt the same flavor as months months ago. We don't live near so it's been a while since we've tried it. The alioli was a lot spicier than ever but still had good flavor but the causa was dry. But I had a side of alioli to help with that. Shrimp was tasty. Several other restaurants shrimp has been tasting off for months but this place shrimp tasted better. The Inca and chicha were delicious. I miss the cut up apple they use to put in it but still tastes fresh. Lomo Saltado was just two huge potato wedges and very few rice. Look at the photo. We did not eat any of it yet. This is the portion. It had good amount of jugó but the flavor wasnt like anything we'd tasted in Peru. BUT there's many many areas in Peru and we've only lived in a few and have only visited a handful more so just because it's not like any lomo we've tasted, doesn't mean it's not Peruvian. My daughter still liked it. It was high soy sauce and high vinegar taste. Lomo has both, but it was missing the cumin and flame flavor for me. We don't like potato wedges at all but she cut it up and made due with it. We were sooooo hungry from all day at the zoo so we almost finished all of it. None of the dishes are repeats for us but again, they taste good, just not the flavors we are use to, it's been a while so maybe that's why the causa and lomo tasted different. The server asked how is everything, im sure if we had said something he'd probably sought to help, but really it is what it is. I just think they cook differently then what we have had living in Peru. My husband had the seco here time ago, it's was incredibly delicious. He loves lamb. It was cooked perfectly and the frijoles were delicious as well. I hope the decide to put that dish back on the menu. Please. Not every visit is gonna go perfectly, that's not possible. Still a fun colorful restaurant with great service. Plates had great presentation. Not long at all ago I enjoyed the ceviche. I was just too cold to get it this time. Gonna got for it next time. Another couple got a huge salad. It looked so good, imma look for it on the menu next time.
