Clean & Cheap, just the way I like it. Best Teriyaki chicken & rice plate that I've had in a long time, decent burgers, and donuts that are hard to resist. It was clean (the lady was literally IN the pastry case cleaning it), fast (probably in there a total of 10mins deciding [which takes me forever], ordering and waiting for my food), people were pretty nice and the food was decent (it's no L&L but it's the closest thing I got down here!). I got the katsu chicken and while waiting I noticed the pix of the katsu chicken didn't show sauce.. I was a little nervous about my choice but when they bagged it - to my surprise- there was sauce in the bag! So I walked the 3 minutes back to work and was ready to eat! The chicken tasted/looked more like fried chicken than katsu chicken from a Hawaiian place but it was still pretty good. Tha sauce was okaaay. The rice was cooked with a little too much water. Not going to lie, i'm not crazy about the donuts here. But, aside from the donuts, awesome. Their sandwiches are the bomb, and the women that work in there are super nice. They also have a pretty good veggie burger that won't break the bank, unlike other places around these parts. They make huge sandwiches, so I'd say skip Subway & go here. Working around this area means the food selection is quite lacking. I was tired of going to the Subway in the Caltrain Station, Panera Bread across the street, and Safeway for fried goodness. I decided to try this place out and saw that they offered Banh Mi. Now, I went in here with low expectations regarding the quality of their Banh Mi and I was not disappointed lol. The Banh Mi bread was not crunchy and it became soggy due to too much mayo. Let's not even mention the headcheese..... They also offer a bunch of breakfast options and philly cheesesteaks. I love this place! It's totally random given their name "Latte Express" and my hatred for drinking coffee. Nevertheless, they have amazing lunch options. I was first taken here for their cheeseburger and sandwich options by my co-workers. We work right around the corner so this is an easy stop. The cheeseburger comes with fries. It's a lot better than you'll get at MCD and closer to what you'd expect at a pub. What really got me was when I decided to try out their real entree's and got their chicken katsu. It's a dish I've had hundred's of times and the thing I like best is the simplicity. It's rice, katsu and broccoli (which I also like as the healthier option to potato salad most places will serve it with). I think it runs around $8 for the katsu, which is what you'd expect from most places in the area. They also get their food out pretty quickly - which is great when you have an hour. You can also call ahead to place the order and most times, it's ready by the time I walk around the block. read more

Despite the name, they have more options than just coffee. They also have flavored milk tea with boba. (I usually get their thai iced tea.) I've tried a few of their other food menu items and they're OKAY. Just another under $10 lunch option to add to your list if you work in the area, are headed to the ballpark to a Giants game, are on a budget, and aren't super picky about the quality of your food. I've gone here enough that the staff remembers me and knows what I want to order (even though it's just a blueberry muffin). They greet me with a smile every time I walk in. I've never really experienced that anywhere else, so I thought that was very cool. I haven't tried their other stuff other than their donuts, which were also good. If I come into work early one of these days, I'll be sure to try one of their breakfast items. The place in general is kinda small, since there aren't a lot of places to sit down and eat. I usually eat my muffin while I'm walking to work anyway, though. Another big convenient plus is how close it is from Caltrain, which is how I initially found the place. I really really really wanted to like this place. A simple, reasonable lunch place in the China Basin vicinity, with a ton of good options ranging from breakfast to chicken katsu to philly cheese steak? Who wouldn't like this place? And this type of selection, pricing, and home cooked atmosphere is unheard of in this neighborhood - I mean come on, I'm sick of paying $18 for a veggie burger and fries at the food truck. Unfortunately, while the food is decent (not amazing, but solid, what you see is what you get) - the wait is not decent. Does it really take 35 minutes to cook 2 eggs and hashbrowns? Yes, it apparently does, unless you go outside of the peak lunch hours of 11:30am to 1:30pm. Once I got there at 11 just to beat the rush (and honestly there have never been more than 5 or 6 people ahead of me so its not that crazy) and even then - that same order, 2 eggs and hashbrowns, it still took 20 minutes!!!! I'm giving it 3 stars because the ladies who work there are super chill, but I would rather give it 2.5 PS- whoever said this place has fast and efficient service must have been visiting from a place with a slow-food culture or something. read more

Latte Express isn't the most terrible place I've visited. The service was fine and decently friendly. The place is dirty, like beyond dirty. One of the pictures on the wall has clearly been damaged by water and has mold growing in it. Should've left right then. The menu is diverse to say the least. Coffee, bagels, donuts, breakfasts, sandwiches, Chinese, Korean, wait... what? Yeah, it's weird. My curiosity was peaked by the eclectic selection immediately. Some coworkers had recommended the place, so I went to check it out for lunch. A few days ago, I had gotten a sandwich: turkey, bacon and cheddar on sourdough. It was decent, though for $7.25, it was dang small (regular piece of bread, not a roll). To be fair, the sandwich was good, not great. If it was priced at $5, I'd be much more likely to be a more frequent customer, moldy pictures not withstanding. Today however, I don't know why, I decided to get brave. I tried the chicken katsu plate, which came with rice and broccoli. Let me break it down for you: Chicken was chewy and bland. The katsu sauce was terrible; I've never had a katsu sauce that tastes like that. In fact, whatever it was, it wasn't katsu sauce. The broccoli was just barely cooked and very crunchy. The rice was, well, rice. I asked before I left, I ordered to go, if the katsu sauce was in the box. The lady told me it was, and it was. I asked about soy sauce, and she said it was in the bag. I looked, didn't see it, but thought maybe it was in the box. It wasn't. :-( So no soy for the rice. And Lord knows I wasn't gonna use that damn "katsu" sauce... I'm thinking the next time I want to spent $7+ on lunch, I'll stay on the other side of the street and hit up Iron Cactus or just go to the deli at Safeway. Teriyaki slowdown. Large assortment of breakfast and banh mi. Chicken teriyaki for $7 plus tax was my choice for the latter. Light on the sauce. Heavy on the meat. Soft on the bread. Banh mi! Banh mi! Fi-na-lly. I have been waiting for them to start making banh mi as I miss going to the Latte Express on Kearny. Walked by today and they had a little picture up on the window. Took a while to find the menu - it's not on the wall, it's on a paper menu on the far glass case. They have only 3 - chicken, grilled pork, and ham. I ordered the pork. Not quite like the BBQ at L.E. #5, but just fine. They marinate cucumbers in addition to the daikon and carrots, and were generous with the cilantro. Bread is excellent. Mayo/butter spread not as tasty as L.E. #5. The wait was a bit long but totally worth it. I feel like the lady making the sandwich took great pains to make it look as appetizing as possible, trim the meat, toast the bread properly. I have my whole office chomping at the bit for a trip over there tomorrow. It was an excellent, filling sandwich and I've had a smile on my face all afternoon for $4.50. read more

Hole in the wall that I'm pretty happy with. If I go in in the morning and the woman working there sees me, she sets aside my favorite donut for me. I get coffee there sometimes am always pleasantly surprised that it's pretty good. They have breakfast burritos that are pretty good (not amazing). And I also like the chicken katsu. Their sandwiches are pretty tasty and I'm a fan of the bagels. Their coffee is up front where it's easy to serve yourself, and it's good quality. I haven't tried everything there yet, but I'd like to if I had more time for breakfast (I usually stop on my way into the office). Nice thing is that it's clearly family owned and run, so they quickly remember you and what you like to order. I asked for avocado one time and the lady knew what I was thinking the next time I came in. Definitely worth the price and time it takes. Donuts are also yummy! and way cheaper than the Louisiana ones on 3rd. Only think I don't really recommend is the Vietnamese coffee. Something off about the flavor, but I can't pin it down. Stick to the regular coffee. Pro-tip, bring cash if you don't plan on buying much, they have a $5 minimum for card (not that it's hard to go over, but some of us need to learn self control) read more

I go to this location about once a week, either for their breakfast or lunch items. Their breakfast burrito is really good (I always get the sausage one) and is very filling. For lunch, I sometimes get their Vietnamese sandwich (which is alright, but not the best I've had) or their other sandwiches. Overall, I would say this place is good for the nice employees and the selection of items they have. However, it is not the most delicious food around, so don't expect that when you get here. read more

I'm frustrated by the lack of options in deep Soma. Sure there are the epic Michelins, the greasy spoon comfort dive bars, and an occasional decent burrito shop. But the total disrespect paid to Asian food is appalling. Granted, I was just in Vietnam, so I am going to be a tad critical, but this place basically serves the wonder-bread/mayo bahn mi. And it's expensive, and they nickel and dime you to change around a bit. Owners: First, drop the attitude and learn to be nice. Second, drop the mayo out of your bahn mi, and use that pate stuff your friends and family use. Also, quit skimping on the veggies. These sandwiches need to be chock-full of those. Lastly, get it under $5. It can be $4.99, just not $5.75 for crap. Get it down. Long way to go here and I probably won't be back to try their improvements, then again, they probably won't. read more

Sandwiches are decent, but the service is definitely lacking a little. I've now been here 3 times, walking from the train station to work. I always look for small "mom and pop" shops, because those are usually the best! The donuts here are fresh and super soft. If you order a sandwich and want to add avocado, be prepared to pay an additional $1.50 for that (you can buy a whole avocado from a market for less than this price). The shop is a little busy at times, and the workers never smile or thank you for stopping by, but prices are relatively reasonable and this shop is in a prime location. read more

well the office is moving away from this mainstay so I may have visited Latte Express for the last time. In general though I remain by my 4 stars. The ladies started to get to know me. I tried their burger (it's a burger nothing fancy at all) had more donuts and had some regular sandwiches. Far and a way the best thing I had there was the Fish Katsu Sandwich. Holy moly! I had always wondered why so many people ordered it. It's because it's the best thing on their menu.
