My friend lives over in this neck of the woods and whenever I come to see her, it involves a trip to Lauer Krauts. Whether we eat in or get it to go (a great option - you can get them to cook at home, too!), it is always spot on. A variety of choices, and really great soups. My husband is obsessed with their bean soup, and always asks when I am going to visit my friend so I can bring him some. Family owned and operated, I love supporting a small business that really treats its customers great. They remember me everytime I come in and are always friendly and helpful. The decades I've enjoyed Lauer Krauts I have noticed the kraut burgers have gotten smaller and the prices have gotten noticeable bigger. Although I've noticed that fact! Quality has not suffered, only the value for the dollar. Even now today, I still go by the store at times later in the morning for a breakfast and even later in the afternoon to get an order to go for dinner and they're sold out of the breakfast and Kraut Burgers for the day. This is as the second stop on the one day adventure to eat breakfast lunch and dinner in Denver. Yes, we flew from Las Vegas to Denver to do the triple crown dining at triple D restaurants. Ok I am a Midwest guy comes from a German family and also grew up on Runza. The Krautburger beats Runza, sorry mom and dad. The sausage also was excellent. The saying goes 'you are what you eat.' Well, if that is true then I'd like to imagine I'm a big, meaty, doughy kraut burger (a rather accurate description). My grandmother used to make kraut burgers but she simply called them 'puppies.' She learned the art of 'puppy' making from her mother-in-law, a somewhat imperious German woman who carefully watched and scrutinized every move she made in the kitchen to ensure her son received properly made meals every day. I grew up on kraut burgers, sausages, potato soup and pickles in the Americanized tradition of German immigrants. I suppose that's why I'm so fond of the food at Lauer Krauts. It's homemade by my now extended German family, the wonderful family that does all the hard work of actually making the food for me to eat. I suppose in that respect I'm a bit like their Kato Kaelin. I show up, raid their fridge, compliment them on their hospitality and go back to my house. I believe that when you feel like family at a restaurant it doesn't really get much better. We we're headed to San Fran with an overnight stay in Brighton. We always try to find Triple D Diners where we travel. We headed over to Lauer Krauts and walked up to the door and they were just locking up. The sweet owners said come on in we can get you a to go if you would like. Did I say nicest people ever they took our order and we asked if we could eat outside they were more than accommodating. They brought our food outside 3 Kraut Burgers chips and the best German chocolate brownie I have ever had. Did I mention the Kraut burgers are to die for it's a must if you are in Brighton Colorado you have to visit. Did I mention the owners were the sweetest people I've ever met. We just had a mini family reunion with my brothers and sister and made a special trip to Lauer Krauts because we grew up on these delicious treats made by our mother when we were growing up! Wahoo! I heard this place was being visited by Diners Drive-ins and Dives, otherwise I would have never known about it. Brighton? I've never been and frankly until I punched it in to the ol trusty GPS, I had know idea where Brighton was. But I found it and it was worth the 20 mile trip. I'm German and grew up on kraut burgers, my family calls them Bierox. So I was more excited than ever to get through the doors. And as much as I hate to say it, sorry Mom.. these kraut burgers are among the elite. Not to mention the delicious potato green bean dumpling soup that had me scraping the bottom of the cup in no time. It's a simple menu, prepared with the up most tradition... Whoa! I got a recommendation to go way out to god knows where and I'm sure glad I did it. Got a Jack Kraut burger and I must say I've never had that unique of a burger, but it was delicious!! The prices were staggeringly low and I could not have been happier with the meal. While we were eating the woman running the front, gave us a sample of their newest cookies made with a little bit of Sauerkraut and what do you know delicious! We saw this place on DDD and decided to check it out. In short, I ordered 1 dozen krauts and we were very disappointed. All were very dry and extremely doughy. We were left wondering, "where's the meat?" On DDD, the kraut was obviously specially made and packed with meat. We were very bummed to not have a similar experience. Went there for lunch recently and had their krautburger. I'm very familiar with Runzas and can honestly say... the krautburger was sorely lacking in much meat or kraut at all. Pictures on their web site show a much different krautburger than I received. Four plus bucks and I left very unsatisfied. I gave two stars based on the cleanliness and friendly vibe. Lauer Krauts is a great little place that offers delicious food that you certainly can't find at just any restaurant. My dad and I both ordered the original Lauer Kraut and we split a cup of chili. Everything tasted great, service was fast and friendly and I can't wait to go back! Had a great experience here, everyone was friendly and caring. They even made sure that my toddlers burger was cooled off for her. I think maybe 3.5. The American Kraut Burger was really just OK in my opinion. It was a little dry and really pepper-y. I like pepper especially on cabbage but it was maybe a little much, not sure, but if you aren't big into black pepper you may not like it. I did however prefer the German Sausage that was wrapped in the home made dough. The sausage was a little bland but it had the right amount of breading on it. I would like to try the soups as those look really good. I would definitely come back but it was not quite as good as I had hoped. I do like that it is different and is great for something different. Prices were reasonable too. The deserts look and sound awesome but trying to stay away from such items. So check it out if your in the neighborhood. read more

As a German, I can vouch that this is NOT German food. The burgers are ok, but again - besides having sauerkraut stuffed inside - it's most definitely not German food. My husband ordered 4 burgers and he was given one small container of mustard (barely enough for one burger). When he asked for more, they said he would have to pay for any additional mustard (again, he bought FOUR burgers). Very stingy and overall overrated. read more
