Vegan Series, Part 4 So you're planning to go out for a meal with friends or family in Bend, Oregon. You realize that some of them are Vegan and some are not. Now what? Do you pick the Vegan place and ask those who are not of that persuasion to be adventurous on that particular occasion? Or perhaps you pick a place that has more traditional offerings and ask your Vegan friends/family to scour the menu for at least one suitable selection? Well imagine not having to ask either camp to sacrifice anything and going somewhere that offers a full menu that caters to everyone's preferences. How you ask? Take them to "Laughing Planet." Catering to the Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free, and Omnivore members of your tribe, I can't recall ever seeing such a comprehensively diverse menu. Not only are all the Vegan options clearly delineated on the menu, but all of the entrees can be made Vegan by simply omitting or substituting cheese for Vegan "cheese" and chicken or beef with organic tofu or tempeh (for no additional charge). No need to do any subbing when it comes to their chili or most of their soups because they are already Vegan. Does dessert sound good? Try their Double Chocolate, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, or Snickerdoodle cookies. We tried all 3, they were all good, and they were all Vegan. No matter your food preferences I hope that you have an affection for our planet and want to see it cared for and cherished. Well these folks sure see it that way. Every sale of a kid's smoothie results in a donation to the "Friends of Trees" organization that is helping to improve and restore the tree canopy in the Portland area by the planting of more than 900,000 trees and shrubs since 1989. That seems just all too fitting to me given that one of our responsibilities as adults is to leave this planet as an inheritance to our children in at least as good a condition as we received it. If you are like minded then you gotta love their saying, "There Is No Planet B." Laughing Planet is no joke and deserves a visit from you soon! And that's...Henry's Take. #veganlife #bendvegan #laughingplanet

    Tiny $15 burrito

Very inconsistent. This burrito was 15$ and the size of a kids burrito. Would be nice to feel like I didn't get ripped off. The small spoon is for reference

Bright and quirky place with tons of vegan options. It's Mexican-inspired but definitely a "Pacific Northwest" kinda Mexican food, so don't go expecting Mexican food like what you would get in Texas or California. We got the chips and salsa to share, my mom got the crunchero quesadilla, and I got the tempeh burrito. My mom LOVED her quesadilla and the dip was flavorful too. Our chips and salsa were also very good. My tempeh burrito was a little more on the bland side but it was fine. I'm a bit picky about tempeh that tastes too "ferment-y" but I didn't notice that at all with my burrito. I will say it was MONSTER sized and therefore very messy. Everything was super filling and good value for money. Overall, we really enjoyed our food and the quirky decor (love the plastic dinosaurs on the tables -- we got triceratops!) Would definitely go back.

Delicious, healthy, and tasty... what more do you need? Their thai bowl is my favorite and their snickerdoodle cookie. Their bibimpap is pretty good as well. One of our other favorites is the chicken burrito made into a bowl. This place survived 2020 for good reason! They also usually have a coupon in the smart shopper for locals. Def a fav for those vegan and vegetarian dietary needs. For kids they have quesadillas and other healthy whole food kid options. One of our go to favorites in Bend and they have been here for at least 10 years

    deluxe vegan Bean & Cheese

Laughing Planet is literally my favorite spot in town. i usually hate burritos but the bean and cheese here NEVER disappoints, the vegan cheese is spectacular, the size and flavor is amazing and the house made gauc and salsas are 10/10.

I've avoided Laughing Planet because of a perceived notion that it was strictly vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, what have you. Being an omnivore, such restaurants have little appeal. Although I will eat vegetarian meals quite often (rarely vegan), I like having meat options. And that's exactly what Laughing Planet offers, turns out. This is a fast casual, bus your own table joint. Order at the counter, get a number, the food comes out in short order. While I'm fine with fast casual, I'm not so enamored of the bus your own table thing. A lot of casual restaurants seem to be picking up on that unfortunate trend. Mind you, while I have no problem clearing the table, I find that some others really aren't very diligent about cleaning their mess. So the staff has to come by anyway. It's not a big deal - I'm just offering an opinion. Food: - SW green chile burrito, ordered deluxe (sour cream and guacamole added). Very good and very large. I ate it all but maybe I shouldn't have. My only complaint is that because the burrito is so big, it tended to lose structural integrity and I ended up using a fork. - Korean BBQ bowl with beef. Pretty decent and spicier than I had anticipated. But the sauce is not great - a little too acidic for my tastes and it certainly isn't Korean. Tons of broccoli included, which is a good thing. Condiments are available at the back left, which is where the bussing station is located. Leftover containers are there, too. Prices are reasonable, parking is sufficient, staff is friendly. And they have beer. Wifi, no password. You will, of course, want to grab a dinosaur or two to attend your table while you eat.

I went with the tomato curry, and it was really good, and very filling. I ended up eating half and taking half with me. The grilled vegetables were definitely my favorite! They tasted so fresh, well grilled, and full of flavor, despite having no seasoning or anything like that. We were munching on grilled vegetables for a little while, wondering how they were just so good. The staff was very polite, knowledgeable, patient, and friendly. They definitely make everyone feel welcome. We're definitely coming back if we're in Bend again in the near future.

I looked around for something similar, but less the cardamon and came across Cafe des Chutes. We visited at 9 am on a Sunday and it wasn't too crowded at all, with only a single person ahead. They have plenty of seating and I think most people decide to eat their treats in the cafe; we had to hit the trail though, so we got ours to go to eat while hiking. Mango Sticky Rice Honey Glazed Croissant ($6.25) - Woah, this is an exceptionally sticky pastry, so sticky it's actually a little cumbersome to eat since the glaze spreads on any surface it touches and becomes very difficult to remove. The glaze tastes just like fresh honey - in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it were mostly honey. There's not much mango flavor until closer to the center, along with another flavor of something very fragrant almost flowery They sprinkle coconut flakes on top, giving a somewhat fruity flavor. The croissant itself is very good - great crust, nicely flaky and crisp with a great texture on the interior, chewy and airy. The lamination seems to be good based on a cursory inspection, but I didn't have a sharp bread knife on me for a clean cut as I usually do. The pastry is very sweet and the glaze covers up the flavor of the croissant entirely. (5/5) Oregon Roll ($6.25) - This base, on the other hand, is really buttery, combining the great lamination, crispy and flaky, with great flavor. There's a fantastic honeycomb texture on the inside combined with the perfect chewiness. They do add a marionberry swirl on the interior, which is pretty obviously included in terms of color, but can't really be tasted on top of the croissant butteriness. On top, they spread a spiced hazelnut glaze, sweet and nutty, almost like peanut butter in texture mixed with butter. Delicious pastry overall. (5/5) Savory Bread Pudding ($10) - This is a super dense and heavy (in weight) bread pudding baked in a muffin mold. They offer to heat it up and it's a really good idea to eat this warmed. We opted to get it cold since we weren't going to eat it for a couple of hours (for a picnic lunch) and it basically wasn't edible, with super dense, bitter and stale tasting bread, making it hard to even stick a fork into the top. We ended up waiting until we got to the hotel room to heat it up the next morning for breakfast, which made it much more palatable. There's some mushroom essence with tons of black pepper and a dense yet pleasingly chewy bread. Cheese is baked on top and there's a little vegetal bitterness from spinach. Not rating this since we ate it the next day. Overall I enjoyed my treats from Cafe des Chutes. I would visit again the next time I'm in Bend. Bathrooms - Tiny room near the front. The water heater takes up some of the space inside, so it's quite warm in the room

Verdict: Zydeco is an outstanding restaurant in virtually every way. No negatives to report. The place is popular - arriving just before opening on a weekday, there was a line to get in. Reservations are definitely a good idea here. Our early arrival in line allowed us to choose a good table in the back, where it wouldn't be too hectic. That too was a good idea as the place gets loud with conversation when it fills up. Music wasn't loud, just the people. The menu isn't huge but there are quite a few, varied choices. Given the meal was a bit of a splurge for us, I essentially ignored the prices, which are not trivial by any means. Fine dining entails spending money. Zydeco has a ton of reviews and as the menu apparently doesn't change, I'll just say everything we ordered was great. Cocktails too. The Bramble Down is exquisite. Service was top tier as well. Timely, attentive, professional without being stiff. The capstone to our experience involved the bill. We actually had a gift card from 2017 - nine years ago. While it certainly didn't cover the whole bill, or even half, it was a nice way to defray costs. Unfortunately, when the server ran the gift card, it showed no balance. Not sure why but perhaps over the years, the card had been erased by stray EMF. Despite that and given we provided the card receipt, the restaurant honored the card for the full amount anyway. Well done. Highly recommended.
