I'm not spiritual, and scoff at religion. I think that if supplements were proved to work, general practitioners would prescribe them. I don't fall for water having memory, or good vibes being enough to cure cancer. When I say that Pamela is a healer, I mean that she actively, truly wants her clients to be well. Healthy. Happy. So don't be shocked if, when you leave her lovely, understated oasis on 6th Ave., you'll be pain-lessened - if not pain-free. I found Internally Happy on Lifebooker, and this is sincerely the first time in my usage of any of those Groupon-esque services where I feel confident I'll be a return customer. Without a doubt, this was the best massage I've ever had. Was it relaxing? Absolutely, but not in the fall-asleep-and-be-charged-for-a-nap-with-moderate-tickling sort of way that seems to be very popular. Pamela, upon reading (! actually reading! who does that?) my new client questionnaire, followed up on some of the key areas I had mentioned, and spent a great deal of time working on those deeply entrenched knots. It hurt. And it was supposed to. She coached me to breathe deep as she kept the pressure on, and I actually felt the knot loosening and travel down my body. Despite devoting a significant amount of time and pressure to my knotted-up shoulder blade, no other areas were neglected. From toes to forehead to fingers to thighs, Pamela kneaded every muscle with the strength and care that a true professional shows. This isn't a going-through-the-motions massage. This is a blissful piece of workmanship by someone who obviously loves her job and loves bettering the lives and moods of her clients. Instead of 45-minutes of relaxing vacation massage, I got 45 minutes of white knuckle pain. To mark the level of pain--the masseuse noted during the massage that she was impressed/surprised by my very high pain tolerance. To be able to note that, she'd have to be doing very painful things. I did cry uncle and ask her to calm it down some here and there, but we weren't really connecting up on the relaxation idea. Afterwards, she warned that I would feel significantly sore for a day. That made date night that night and pretty much every moment of the rest of the vacation difficult to enjoy. I was recovering with some pretty noticeable pain. It's Thursday now--4 days later--and I still have sore spots on my shoulder and glute that are really achy. Vacation's over and I'm back home. I'm still sore and kind of bummed to have had the trip marred. I will say that I don't think it was intentional. Just a miscommunication on what we were trying to accomplish. She was really working on my trouble areas with deep tissue, and I just wanted those areas relaxed a bit so I could enjoy my vacation more not less.
