Recently my skin esthetician recommended me trying Pratima Skincare products and so I purchased some samples. When I received my samples, the containers were close to empty. The samples amounts were not enough to see whether my skin works well with the serums as I have sensitive skin. Pratima knows her stuff! I have been seeing her for consultations and using her products for a while now. She has helped me overcome everything from chronic acne to a severe skin/immune infection. My favorites of her products include the firming nutrient mask, tumeric mask, sandalwood soothing lotion - which I literally use everyday. For facials I love the Lumi Lift with Udhatta facial. No matter how many different products I try out in the market I always come back to her products, facials and philosophy. People always compliment me on my skin and I know it's because of Pratima. Went here from a friend of a friend's recommendation. I made an appointment for a bikini wax because from their website they had good prices. The location is great (next to the LV store on Greene St.), the ambiance inside is so peaceful and not to mention beautiful!! The service was great as well. I had Yamile and she was very nice, professional and fast! My complaints would be: 1. They do not do brazillian bikini waxes anymore. (but it's still advertised on their website) 2. I went on a Wednesday- according to the site you get 15% off services on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Like an idiot I forgot to mention it, but when I remembered, I felt a little bad they didn't automatically do it. I have had great two facials with Mina thus far. She is absolutely great. The first time I went for a facial with nasya. I was completely relaxed afterwards and my face looked amazing. I rebooked the same for my next appointment right away. Prior to my facial appointment with Mina, I had a massage at another location but it did not leave me in such a relaxed state as Mina put me in. Honestly. I also received great skin care tips from Mina and followed her suggestions. She was on point. I learned the difference between using products for moisturizing versus products for nourishing the skin, etc. The second time I worked with Mina, she was even more detailed and specific with recommending suggestions for the care of my skin. It is not a cookie cutter approach with her. Each appointment builds on itself. I love that Mina gives suggestions based on how your skin is doing in the moment and where you want it to be. Mina's approach is gentle, thorough and very effective. I have had more vigorous facials and I found they can do damage to the skin. I am done. Now I have had two products purchased from here that have either been poorly packaged and/or had mold in them. This is overpriced garbage. Seems like it is made in a dirty factory in a basement in Queens or in India. Do I really want to put products that have mold growing in them on my face? How about very heavy and stupid glass containers with the cheap thin plastic tops that crack easily? This is not a review for the spa, rather for Dr. Pratima Raichur herself and the clinical services she offers. I have gotten a few treatments at the spa and I think they are great (except I very much question their use of oil, even on acne-prone skin.) I first saw Pratima almost one year ago, hoping she could do something for my forehead acne that had been unsuccessfully treated by dermatologists. I always prefer going the natural route to anything with harsh chemicals. When I finally got to see Pratima (there was a 3 month wait) she told me my forehead acne was caused by a digestive issue and that she could treat it. She gave me herbs (to take 3 times a day) and skincare products and told me I had to stop eating dairy, fish, meat, eggs, fried food, tomatoes, avocados, and certain nuts. This left me on an extremely restricted diet (and I am a college student)--but as I was desperate, I followed her plan to a T. 3 months later, my skin was worse than when I first started seeing her. While the acne on my forehead had gone down a bit, I now had horrible acne on my cheeks and back, which I had never had before. I went back to Pratima, and she told me that now it was a hormonal issue and that she could treat it. 6 months (and thousands of dollars spent at Pratima) later, I have scars all over my face from the acne, and it has not gotten better. In fact, it's worse than it has ever been. I have decided to stop seeing her and to go to a dermatologist. I felt compelled to write this review because after the monthly facials she insisted I have, the skincare products, 9 months worth of herbs, and the cost of her consultations, I have spent thousands of dollars, and I am nowhere. It was a good facial but the facialist put a ticking timer that ticks loudly during the facial, and packing things in her jars while you are supposed to relax, making all these noises is just not relaxing ! I find some of the comments below very strange because I think Pratima Spa is a gem of a place for someone who loves TRUE all natural products and out of this world customer service. She makes many of the products herself (a feat in itself considering how long she has been in business) and everything is 100% natural. A lot of products claim to be all natural but are not. Pratima uses the ayurvedic method, which has you chose skincare based on your dosha. If you don't know your dosha, all the front desk people or facialists are extremely friendly and will help you know. Pratima herself is extremely knowledgeable, and if you are trying to treat a skin condition she knows exactly what you should do and what herbs you should take. I felt like through using Pratimas products I have really come to understand my skin and how I should be taking care of it. I will never use harsh chemical face products ever again. read more

The best facial I've ever had! I have sent many friends here for amazing facials, done by the amazing Mina. She has a special touch that is relaxing and invigorating. I always leave feeling refreshed, cleansed and beautiful. The place is a quiet little sanctuary of zen, and the entire staff is very warm and helpful. I came here because I saw in a magazine (forgot the name) that this was a great place to get facials in NYC. So, I scheduled an appointment for their Ayurvedic Facial ($95). When I get to the address listed I was a little confused because I imagined it to be its own store, not on the 7th floor of a building. I get there and was told to remove my shoes at the front. I've never been asked to do that at a commercial building, but didn't mind because I do that anyway at my own home (I'm Asian). The place is nicely decorated and smells great. I had Gail, she looked at my face under magnification and told me that my dosha is Pitta (combination skin). Then she proceeds with the facial: cleansing my skin, steaming it to prep for extractions, getting more of an oil rub than a massage while being steamed, extractions, mask, oil, and lotion. After, she had a cup of tea waiting for me. That was really nice. The receptionist was also helpful and let me take samples of a few products that were used on me. The idea of putting oil on my face was a little weird for me at first, but after trying the samples out some more it's not as bad as I thought. I have combination skin, which for those that may not know, means that I have an oily T-zone. I was scared that it would just make my T-zone look greasy, but it doesn't. I also like that all of their products are natural and made by Pratima herself. Results: After I finished my tea, I looked in the mirror and there was only one spot that was red. It was on my forehead, where I had a pretty stubborn whitehead; so, I kind of understood. However, the next day a few other spots on my face felt sensitive and a bit tender. You know the feeling you get when a nasty zit is about to emerge? Well, a few pimples did rear their ugly heads, so I am pretty upset about the extractions and the red spot became a scab. I would have given them 4 stars, but the extractions creating pimples = 3.5. read more

This spa is amazing. I came here for a Abhyanga massage, and it was a wonderful experience. First of all, the facilities here are so nice, and clean, and calming. You feel like you step into another world. The service from the front desk was excellent. I got a massage from Sabine, who was fantastic. She really took care of me and gave me a stellar massage. The Abhyanga massage is great because it includes their amazing skincare and hair treatment. Best of all, the spa is really committed to using natural, environmentally-friendly products. A solid 4 stars, but this is the first spa treatment I've had in the city. I searched thoroughly for spas and wanted somewhere a bit less frilly and more focused on holistics etc. The space is really nice, tucked up in a building on Greene street. It's not spacious (at least from what I saw), but it is clean and welcoming. Staff was friendly and my massage was really great. I left feeling totally relaxed and feeling good. My massage therapist was very nice and I love someone that doesn't try to make conversation. My sister got a massage as well and really liked it. They also didn't push products on us at the end which was a plus. I don't think they have a sauna or steam room or anything like that but they do have a shower in one of the bathrooms (which we could have used considering we both had a ton of oil in our hair from when they massage your scalp). I would be curious to try other places in the city, but definitely had a good experience here and would recommend it. read more

About 2 years ago my good friend recommended seeing Mina for a facial at Pratima SPA. By that time I had tried a lot of places in the city and almost lost hope to find a good esthetician. My first session with Mina was nothing short of amazing. From the moment I walked in I felt some some wonderful healing energy. I never felt so peaceful and relaxed during a facial. While doing an great job with the extractions (didn't miss a spot), Mina told me about skin care and gave some tips on how I can protect my skin on daily basis. I treated myself to a facial for Valentine's Day and am so happy I did. From the moment you first call and speak to staff, the tone is welcoming and professional. The feel and look of the spa is warm, dimly lit and serene. Louisa did my facial. She was warm, kind and soothing in her demeanor, taking the time to explain what products she was using and why. She had warm blankets on the massage table that felt lovely. My facial included scalp, neck and arm massage. The oils used were fragrant and calming. I didn't want the facial to end!! I was overcome by a sense of gratitude and wellness at the end. My skin felt AMAZING!! She recommended products to use based on my dosha(constitution). But someone insisted on bleaching the hair on my face. Well.. i winded up with burn marks on my face. When they didn't go away,I went to Pratima Skincare. Dr. Raichur took one look at my skin and was able to fix the issue naturally with herbs and natural skin care. To say I am grateful does not even cover it. I love coming to Pratima and look forward to my facial appointments so much. I see Mina, who is wonderful at her job and a great person. I always feel so taken care of by her. I love the the micro-current treatment in particular. I leave with my skin looking and feeling great, and I feel good about the products that Pratima uses and their approach to skincare. Unlike other facial experiences, which sometimes can leave skin looking irritated or red, my skin looks just great after seeing Mina because her facials are effective but not irritating. I can't believe it has taken me this long to write a review for Pratima!!!!! I love this place. Where do I even start?! Okay first with products: Dr Raichur makes or oversees all of the products herself, and they are all lovely works of art tailor made to your dosha. The sunscreen has a cult following, and I have been devoted to it long before it was touted in beauty magazines across the country. It is thin, made with zinc oxide but doesn't leave your skin looking pasty, and does NOT make you break out (and I am very acne prone). Having a facial here will certainly allow you to know which products are best for you. I love the pitta body oil, and liposomes in conjunction with essential oils, and the soothing lotion is everything. NOTHING ELSE, and I have truly tried just about everything, helped my skin long term the way Pratima has. I actually saw Dr Raichur multiple times, she sees you, looks at you, speaks with you, and just from that can diagnose you with tons of things! I've been previously diagnosed from MD/DOs and she nailed those diagnoses on the head without any bloodwork or past medical history. Bottom Line is, she knows her stuff, and Ayurvedic medicine has been around for so long. She really can help you with so many issues plaguing your life. Michelle is staff there and she also communicates with you via email if you see Pratima. She's absolutely lovely, I just adore her. I have facials here as well, I see Louisa and absolutely love her. She is the sweetest, and a facial with her never leaves you looking like you went through a painful facial process- skin is always fresh and glowing. Plus her massages during the process are heaven. So I love this place, but I would caution you that your experience is really dependant on who you get as your provider. I had a life-changing massage my first time visiting. I was eagerly awaiting my visit for a follow on massage when I was booked with a provider who had a month of experience at the establishment. It was one of the worst massages of my life. The complete opposite of my initial experience. Literally, I felt like it was just rubbing oil. I spoke up three times during the massage to ask for more pressure. I still regret not interrupting the massage to leave. As I was checking out, I shared with the manager my disappointment with the experience. She offered a bottle of complimentary oil to make up for the experience. I was so upset that I called back to tell them it was so unsatisfactory. I was still in disbelief they would allow that type of service. The manager offered to refund part of the massage. I will return to Pratima but will be very deliberate in requesting seasoned, vetted providers. read more

They have expiration dates on their gift certificates? extremely tacky. This is just a ploy to suck money out of people. My boss has bought our group gift certificates for Christmas and we all tucked them away for a special occasion. They all expired on us, there is an expiration date written on it but none of us noticed because this isn't a groupon, this should be a high end place but it's low class customer service shows it's true colors. I'm told to arrive as much as 30min early to fill out an intake form. The intake form is over 10 pages long. Pratima sees me 40min after my scheduled appointment and reads ONE portion of ONE page of my intake form. She tells me I'm Vata and proceeds to ask questions that have been answered at length in the intake form. She is rushed because she is running behind schedule so my responses are cut off. She proceeds to prescribe herbs to produce heat in my body. It is spring, I love spring and summer, I love heat. By July I am standing in the shade every chance I get, not realizing until August that the herbs are causing me to hate the heat. I stopped taking the herbs. 1.5 years later I go to a Marma body worker who knows Pratima's work well. Within 5min of working on me he tells me I have too much heat in my body. I tell him about Pratima's prescription and he says she was entirely wrong. I happen agree. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone. I am a bodyworker. When someone comes to me I have them fill out an intake form and I READ it before discussing it with them. read more

SUMMARY: healing your gut + Helena = acne relief. I have had acne for the past ten years, and I'm finally starting to see results! A coworker told me my skin is "glowing", GLOWING! I credit all of my external progress to Helena: she is my aesthetician and she is AMAZING. Seriously beyond comparison, she gives the best facials. I purchased a package for 5 detoxifying facials with 5 lumi light treatments: you start off with a steam treatment to open up your pores, and at the same time, you get an arm and hand massage. Then the detoxifying facial is intense, but Helena really gets those nastly blackheads out, and even clears up my cystic pimples (God bless her). She works so hard and is extremely thorough (she extracts pores I didn't even notice, and who knows your face better than you!). The lumi light is helping reduce the redness I have post pimples. It's a bit claustrophobic at first, but I can usually fall asleep and forget about it. You end with a mask and your essential oils (and sometimes a head massage) and I'm always shocked by how much clearer my skin looks. The products Helena recommended work slowly, but steadily. Every morning I rinse my face and dry it with a papertowl. I put on the pink sandalwood soothing lotion, then green Neem purifying cream moisturizer. And in the evening I scrumb my face with the Pitta cleanser (ask Helena to show you how to make the perfect combination), then follow with the pink sandalwood soothing lotion and green Neem purifying cream moisturizer. Lastly, I spot the black lavender clay mask on my pimples (I've been needing less and less!). When I remember, I make a mask out of the Pitta cleanser (just leave it on for 10 minutes) or layer the lavender mask over my entire face for 10 minutes. With these products, consistency is key. Now onto my diet and "consultation" with Pratima. I am a total believer that your skin is the roadmap to your internal health, and what you eat shows up on your face... Looks like everyone got the same dietary restricitions from Pratima, so the following is my experience and then what's actually helped me: I was vegan for about 6 months, and I seriously saw no results. I wanted it to work so badly, because I love cheese and giving it up was hard, but it did nothing. Pratima is an amazing person, and her staff is so wonderful and friendly. I am so grateful to have been introduced to her and the spa! It's been about 5-6 years since I started with ayurvedic approach, and started with the Bindi line of which she is co-creator. It made such a remarkable difference in my pitta skin, that I thirsted for more . I eventually purchased her book, and then started with the phone consults on my health. Like many others, I battle stress and its likely associated impacts. For me, this meant loss of appetite, weight gain, changes in my cycle, hair loss, insomnia, and lethargy etc. My allopathic doctor (Traditional western medicine doctor) checked me multiple times for thyroid and endocrine disorders, to no avail...the reports said I am within the "normal" range, yet I knew that something is off. In 2008-9, I had a few phone visits with Pratima, and ordered/followed her suggested herbal regimen. They worked very well. Then, for reasons that I cannot explain myself, I dropped off. After going back to the allopathics again, who cannot explain my issue nor offer a remedy, I went back to Pratima in 2012. This time in person. I live in WDC and travel to see her as scheduled. She gives such attentive and loving service. In just a few weeks I've regained my appetite, have more sustained energy, and noticed other positive changes in my physical and mental health. Pratima is now my complementary medicine doctor, because she restores my health and offers prevention to keep me on this path. Pratima is also very pleasant and has a beautiful, gentle sense of humor. She tends to go over time with me. For those of you who feel shortened of consult time with her, perhaps your medical/health needs did not warrant a long list of remedies :) Be grateful. Finally, since I travel 3-4 hours to see her, I make sure to also schedule a spa treatment while there. The Kalyani facial and abhyanga massages are fantastic and very effective.
