The Washington Corridor was starving for a place like this. An excellent idea for a contemporary American semi-casual spot where the menu may be concise, but everything on it is good (i.e., a concept exactly in opposition to the Cheesecake Factory). The place truly focuses on somewhat simple foods, but strives to prepare them right. Unfortunately, I can't give Laurenzo much credit for originality. If the dining space hints at Houston's (glass enclosed kitchen, sporty but serious vibe), the menu screams it. Most of our table went for Prime Rib-oriented dishes (done up in style in tacos, french dip sandwiches, and the classic prime rib au jus with horseradish) and the food was excellent. The portions can be daunting, but even as leftovers this food would be great. We also had the calamari as an appetizer, and the marinara sauce was so fresh it could have been prepared tableside. The only reason I can't give five stars at this point was the service. We waited nearly fifteen minutes for our credit card receipt, then received the wrong one, and waited about ten more for the correction. While computer problems do happen, our waiter (who had delegated responsibility for running the card to the manager) seemed to be avoiding us the entire time. Though our waiter just isn't cut out for the industry (what can I say? it's a difficult job that some people can't handle...), I can't fault the place for one bad service experience, particularly when the food, the concept, and the location are fantastic. I've been to this location a few times and being the original location, I still feel it's the best. I thought I had written a review when they first opened, but apparently not. I like to order their prime rib sandwich, no matter whether it's lunch or dinner time. This is pricy, but it's huge, so filling and can be turned into 2 meals. Their green chili cheeseburger is also pretty good as well. They do have a lunch menu which takes off a few bucks from the dinner pricing, and the serving size is exactly the same. First impressions are everything. I made reservations and excitedly headed here to celebrate my husbands birthday. Upon walking in the two hostesses where engaged in personal conversations and their snapchat. After 7 minutes they acknowledged us...albeit one asked us how many was in our party the other if we had reservations. After we caught up to where the hostess led and rudely left us, we where met with our breathless waiter. No matter when he arrived at our table he always was flustered and out of breath. I have driven past thousands of time and always thought it looked like it would be great. Unbelievably disappointed. We had a gift card which is what prompted us to finally try this place. The other restaurants in this group are fabulous El Tiempo & Tony Mandolas. We wanted to sit at the Bar and have a couple of apps & drinks and were told by the bar tender we could not bc we didn't have a "VIP" membership. So we got a table instead. The appetizers were "applebees" quality... tasty, not bad, but underwhelming for the type of establishment. The meal was much the same... I'm surprised this restaurant only earns 3 1/2 stars. My work colleague and I go to Laurenzo's frequently for lunch and we have always been impressed with the food and everything we've ever eaten. The gumbo is very good, comparable to some of the best ones I've eaten. The prime rib sandwich is excellent and is served on moist roll. The cream corn is superb, almost tasting like a savory dessert. Maybe the dinner menu exceeds the price point for some but we think it's a good lunch bargain. read more

I've never found a place where I felt so at home. From the moment I walked in, I loved everything, and the longer I stayed, the more I enjoyed this place. The first thing I noticed was the homey feel. My wife and I were there before a show in the Theatre District, so we were pretty early but the place was already hopping. A huge wall of windows provided so much light it took maybe 20-minutes to finally realize that this place is more bar like than restaurant. We were 15-minutes late for a reservation (traffic) and were seated at the bar. No big deal as there were 3-50"(ish) HD TV's just hangin out on the wall. I got to watch US Open Golf, Mexico v. Italy World Cup, and a baseball game all at the same time. At the bar, the bartender was more than helpful. We had been fishing all day and my wife just wanted a cool fruity drink...that's all she asked for. The bartender whipped up one of the best rum punches I've ever tasted. I had a draught beer that was great. In a few minutes we ordered and had our food in no time. We ordered an appetizer (Artichoke Spinach dip) and an entree (12-oz Prime Rib). Both were stellar and the steak was perfectly cooked. As we were enjoying the meal I started gazing around the walls. To my surprise, they were simply covered in memorabilia of all sorts. Basketball, football, boxing, Olympics. It was amazing and pulled off in a fashion that didn't make you feel like you were at some cheap thrift store, but managed to add to the ambiance of what really almost seems like an extremely upscale and posh sports bar. It's almost like a country club man cave that a woman would feel perfectly comfortable in. I simply can't say enough good things about Laurenzo's. Over priced. Not sure this restaurant has an identity. With the Michael Buble, slow jazz music and then the scatter menu. Nice decor with a shabby club feel. Dinner last night with family had high and low lights. Highs were the quality preparation and freshness of the red snapper, pan seared an served with shrimp and lump crab on a lemon butter sauce (which needed more lemon). Lowlights were inattentive service (had to ask for drink refills), no bread service and the almost 30 minute wait from ordering to arrival of the main courses. What a fine Prime rib I had here last night. the ambiance is relaxed and corner barish, with all the TV's showing sports and such. But if you want to sit in a quiet corner thats available as well. Our service was attentive and pleasant, and our waiter knew what he was talking about when he made a wine selection. I wished they had a bigger selection of reds to enjoy with my beef, but discovered I was perfectly happy with the choice he made for us, and it didn't cost the earth. We both had Prime rib. One cooked Medium and one rare. And they were prepared to perfection. A bit of raw horseradish on the side, you could have creamy is you wanted it also. I ordered a baked potato and She had the asparagus. We shared of course and didn't go hungry. the portion size on the sides is big enough to share, and you get 1 side with your steak. Initially I was turned off by the menu put together when this place opened about 6 months ago. I understand that opening a restaurant is COMPLICATED and you can't expect it to go smoothly so I finally gave Laurenzo's a shot recently and I can confirm that this place is awesome. I had the shrimp and grits last week, I won't bother to describe them in detail other than to say they were delicious despite my expectation that the food here was going to be a mish-mash of several things done wrong. This week I had the wine braised oxtail in puff pastry. This is a really memorable dish. The flavors were balanced with salty and sweet from the wine basting and the texture of the oxtail was perfect. This is going to be one of my favorite dishes in Houston - and I did want to hate this place when I saw tacos and $40 steak on the menu opening week. I went here for brunch on Super Bowl Sunday. The brunch menu consisted mostly of various takes on eggs Benedict. It was delicious! The marscapone grits were savory and buttery. I had the eggs Benedict with steak as the meat, and you could taste the charcoal on the steak. It was perfect. The Bloody Mary and the crepe style pancakes were excellent as well. Our server was extremely personable and attentive. We never wanted for anything and he gave excellent recommendations. I highly recommend this place for brunch. After driving by this place for weeks, finally decided to try it out for lunch. Upon walking in, I was immediately reminded of Houston's, albeit not quite as nice. Some of the decor was kind of funny, like the faux green columns throughout the place. They do have several tvs over by the bar, but an overabundance of speakers on the wall. Not quite sure what that is about. Does it turn into a dance club at nights? They give you generous helpings of food. Generous. For me, this can be a good or bad thing. Good - if you're hungry, bad - if you're like me and tend to eat almost everything on the plate regardless. The food itself, it was good. I got the chili-bacon burger w/ fries. The fries are excellent. I'll probably make this place a regular for lunches. It's convenient and everybody I ate with enjoyed it. Just got home, so I want to write all this while it's fresh in my head. Sunday nights, they close at 9, we got there a little after 8 and it was pretty dead. Waitress was friendly and upon my asking about drink specials, she let me know there were no price specials, but the Spring Tini was very good, her favorite, in fact. $9, so I said alright. One of the best decisions I've ever made concerning a cocktail. 3 olives watermelon vodka and a hint of grapefruit. It was divine. The calamari appetizer was generous, the marinara was a little bland, but responded well to a heavy shake of salt. I ordered the green chili bacon burger or something like that, and I wanted fries, but I was wary of getting those dried up skinny fries like they have at Barnaby's. She said they were comparable, and her friend who works at Barnaby's said they're better than Barnaby's. I passed on those and got some wilted spinach salad as my side. My husband got some massive fish sandwich (red Drum) with the fries, and his fries were delectable. Crispy, crunchy and hot, and not nearly as skinny and dry as Barnaby"s. About 3 times thicker, but still on the thin side. His serving of fries was huge, so plenty to share. My burger was very good. Lots of Arugula, nice bun, poppy seed I think, and plenty of cheese. The wilted spinach salad was a tad overdone as far as the cheese--Parmesan or Romano or something of that ilk, and a little too much black pepper for me, but I admit I'm sensitive to black pepper and it makes me choke (Remember Pierce Brosnan's character in Mrs. Doubtfire? Like that but not as dramatic). Another round of drinks, then chocolate bread pudding ala mode--enough for 4 and we were happy campers. We'll definitely be back, especially for happy hour. From the first bite to the last. Thr menus has everything from Mexican, Italian, and Steak. Starter was the white queso. Loving the freash salsa that came with it and the flour chips. We had the prime rib, with mashed potatoes, asparagus, and mushrooms. Our waiter was fun, knowledable, and just the right amount of there. I ordered my prime rib medium, my friend medium with a sear. Our waiter asked if we wanted the horseradish, props to him for not wasting food, because I don't. The prime comes with fries (why?), they allow you to substitute, I got mashed. The mashed potatoes are little plates of potatoe heaven. Upon your first bite of the fluffy white butter and garlic lace euphoria you will hear faries giggle and flap the wings. You will also know the god of potatoes has smiled. I didn't even pick out the chives, something I always do, it was that good. The steak was perfect. The seasoning, the cook, the cut, nothing wrong. NOTHING! No, steak knife needed, like butter. Better than a 5 star steak house, that shall remain un-named. No buyers regret for this meal. The asparagus was sweet and grilled just right, became finger food, it wasn't overly mature. The seasoning was very tasty. The mushrooms made the perfect compliment to the prime rib. The most perfect bite of the meal was prime rib with au jus, mushroom, and mashed potatoes. Yeah! Harry Potter wishes he could conjour up that. They have a full bar with a talented bartender. He made my requested drink without my giving him the reciepe in my purse. The evil manager talked our bellies into the strawberry pie with white chocolate gaunache. Amazing. What are you Laurenzo? Are you a sports bar, after all you have large TVs and sports jerseys on the wall. Are you a lunch spot, with all the sandwich items? The dark wood decor and lighting indicates that you are a nice dinner spot though the non-sandwich options are few. I had the fish special with asparagus and mashed potatoes. It was actually quite tasty, hence the 3 stars. All the meals we had were in overly generous proportions and at very reasonable prices. The striped bass special was a large fillet with a crispy skin. The only other non-sandwich/burger options were steaks, which I am not opposed to but after heavy holiday meals fish was the way to go. We did also have the guacamole and queso. They came with a side of hot chili salsa which really awakened the dishes. The wine list was well priced and had good yet not overwhelming variety. All in all, a decent experience. Went there for the first time for Valentine's Day and I was thoroughly unimpressed. First, the menu is all over the place. I would have much preferred quality over quantity. My husband and I decided to try Laurenzo's for dinner. As the other reviews commented on, we immediately noticed the similarities to Houston's, aside from the fact that Laurenzo's was significantly brighter inside (we prefer the more romantic dim lighting). I ordered the prime rib and my husband ordered the french dip. My prime rib was cooked to the correct degree of "done-ness" but was cold. Very disappointing. I ordered sauteed asparagus as my side and was presented with a pile of asparagus sitting in a pool of oil. Not too appetizing. My husband's french dip was good, but was made with the most well-done shavings of prime rib. He would have preferred more rare cuts. We assume they just used the "reject" pieces. Overall, we enjoyed trying somewhere new, but won't return. For the money, we'd sooner just go to Houston's. The atmosphere and food are both substantially better. read more

It blows my mind that the geniuses behind El Tiempo own this place. They need to stick to Tex Mex. The husband's parents wanted our family to go there, so we agreed, with only the knowledge that it was somehow related to El Tiempo. The restaurants could not be more different. My husband's pizza was not even up to Freschetta standards, and my French dip sandwich just tasted like roast beef with salty water. Nothing to call home about. The reason we came here was because all other bars and pubs were packed for the USA soccer game. We had prime rib, the quesadillas and the calamari. The food was good, don't get me wrong, but I paid 83$ for all that. You only get one side with your prime rib. Personally, you can get the same thing at any other steakhouse. LOVE this place. It has become one of our regular spots. We have tried the fish, shrimp, burger and sandwich but the Prime Rib is what keeps us coming back. It is too die for! Once it cools down I am going to try thier chili which I have been told can be made without beans. Carlos is our favorite waiter. He defiinitely makes the visit complete. There are only 2 reasons I did not give them a 5 Pretty expensive (we share when we order the prime rib) Some of the waiters have a bad attitude which is why we always try to get Carlos! I can't say enough good things about Laurenzo's. Yes, this is THAT Laurenzo's family we all know and love. The same family that brought us Ninfa's and El Tiempo has given us an eclectic sports themed restaurant with a diverse menu featuring Mexican, Italian, and Cajun cuisines. The mascarpone grits are to die for - while they aren't anything like your traditional Louisiana-style grits, they are AMAZING. Even if I'm not there for brunch, I always try to get these as a side with my entree. The basil chicken pesto pizza is fantastic as well. My favorite entree so far is the crab étouffée enchiladas. Yes, there is such a thing! They were out of this world! The sauce is made from an incredible cajun roux, served with generous lumped crab meat. By far, these are the best "seafood enchiladas" I've ever had. Many have tried, but Laurenzo's does it right - their way! Great place to see a game during dinner too, as they have plenty of TVs sprinkled throughout the restaurant. At the same time, its definitely not a sports bar. What a terrible disappointment this restaurant was. I called to make reservations the day before my husband's birthday and told them it was his 65th birthday. I asked to have a bottle of champagne chilled and at the table? Well, we got there, and no champagne. I made the reservation for 6:15 pm on purpose. I hoped that by making it earlier in the evening, it would not be so crowded, which it was not, lending itself to good service, which it was not! The entire meal was mediocre, at best. My son's dinner was so disappointing that I cut my burger in half and split it with him. My other son ordered the chicken pesto panini. What he got was a chicken breast on the exact same bun as my hamburger, and it was neither grilled or toasted, it was not even warm. They even forgot to put on the fresh mozzarella. We repeatedly had to ask for a beer that was ordered when we 1st got there and we continually had to ask for our water to be refilled. The final straw was this: when I made the reservations I specifically asked if they could please bring out a slice of their Italian cream cake with a candle so that we could wish him "Happy Birthday" vs me bringing a cake? I was told "yes" it was no problem. Well, that did not happen either. I should have said something right then and there but did not want to ruin his bday dinner anymore than it already had been, so I waited until I got home and called Laurenzo's. I asked to speak to the manager on duty but was told he was busy and wold return my call "shortly." I waited 1 hour before I called back only to be told that the manager had left for the night and I would have to call back tomorrow! These guys were really on top of everything. 30 minute wait for I got a shiner on tap - They keep thier tap beer very cold, which made it a great! While we waited for the table we stood over by the kitchen and watched the steak master do his thing and even asked him a couple of questions. We got a quacamole appetizer - excellen Wife had the cancun ribeye, marinated in pineapple and a grilled pineapple on top - excellent I had a 12 oz prime rib, medium with a loaded baked potatoe - excellent Everything had great flavor and we will definately be back. We went here for my friend's birthday, a goup of 7. I ordered the Smoked Salmon as an appetizer, got the waiter's opinion whether to get it cold or warm. We went with cold. It's not as good as Houston's and half the size but the same price, but the smoke was very strong on it in a good way. As for my entree, I got the Prime Rib Eye (medium). When I got my plate, it didn't look like the 12oz that it was advertised to be and it wasn't all that great. It was actually overcooked, more like Done than Medium, I had to ask for Au Ju sauce to eat it as it was very done in some parts. The mash potatoes was actually good, can't really messed that up. The service.....bad, a few times he would stick his hand in between people talking to refill there drink, I didn't even get a refill at all for my drink. The food is definitely not worth the price, I think I would have enjoyed my steak more if I had to like Texas Land and Cattle. read more
