This place is great! I started going here because I won a gift certificate that they donated to a charity event, and I kept coming back because it was such a pleasant experience. The Salon is new, and the owners did an awesome job on the rehab. Katie colors and cuts my hair. Everytime I go to her its exactly what I want. She is super friendly and accomodating. Went to this salon for the first time because I wanted to try a location closer to where I lived. Based off the reviews, I thought I picked a good place. The service I got was a balayage with a blow dry. I showed the stylist pictures of what I wanted - a lighter look overall. I came in with my hair pretty much a dark brown/black color and when it was finished I barely saw a difference. I thought I would wait to see if it would look lighted once I saw it in the sunlight and washed my hair. But after a week now, I see no change. Definitely not worth the $200+ spent and probably won't be going again. read more

I went in to get a blonde balayage on my dark hair and was hoping for the best but planned on talking to my stylist of what we could do. She didn't say much on what would happen and said she would do her best after I showed her a dark to light balayage. I get the dye done and she blow dries my hair and it is red pink. It is not much lighter and looks terrible. Then they decide to lighten my hair some more, and then tone it for 30 minutes. I thought they had fixed it once I looked in the store but once I got home (and saw it in much better lighting) my hair is absolutely green. Not any lighter, just GREEN. And they left lots of product in my hair and it is very sticky! Don't go if you want to go dark to light, worst experience I have ever had. read more

Men (and boys) ASK FOR DEANNA! Funny but not so funny story. Deanna's back went out and I had an important meeting and my hair was out of control making me look like a newscaster from the 80's. So I had to go to supercuts or something like that. Needless to say after having Deanna do my hair for the last half decade, the lesson was learned: NEVER let anyone do my hair other than Deanna. Not only does she intuitively know how to work my style but she's a great conversationist and is always up to interesting stuff in her life. I've followed her north from Halo to Lavender Park and it's nice to see her broadening her clients from just men and boys to women and girls. The atmosphere is bright and airy, not too feminine but stylish and homey. And everyone there is much different than the Bucktown/Wicker Park "too cool for school" super hiperster pretentious don't have time or patience for anyone attitude common at her old place. Deanna (Dee) is the best. I've followed her all over Chicago during my time here. She's been cutting my hair for at least 8 years. I don't really trust anyone else to cut it to be honest. Dee is a men's specialist too. So if you're a man, a dude, or just a guy she's the one for you. She keeps up on all the important things that she needs to know about men's fashions, trends, and styles. She's even been on TV numerous times doing cuts and makeovers for celebrities and locals alike. Plus she's just about the nicest person in the world. We've become good friends over the years and I always enjoy going back to wherever she is to catch up on things and get a quality cut. I like her in particular because at this point I never have to tell her what to do. She always knows best and remembers everything. So there's a real comfort level involved. I just show up, have a drink, and it's like catching up with an old friend. If you're a guy and looking for a place to get your hair cut I highly recommend Lavender Park. Ask for Deanna. I've gone to this Salon three times now, and they never seem to understand the concept of "light, bright blonde"...every time I have left with brassy hair wondering why I just spent money getting highlights when they are either unnoticeable or completely not what was asked for. This place could have been great, but they let assistants apply gloss and pull permanent color through your ends without any oversight. My hair kept getting more and more damaged each visit that this happened. Eventually 4 inches needed to be chopped off. I'm at another salon now where they actually are about the condition of your hair and have trained people who know what they are doing. Be careful. My appointment at Lavender Park was my first real salon experience in about a year--and as someone with very thin, very curly hair, I was pretty nervous. My hair gets unruly really fast, and no one seem(ed) to understand that! I found this place here on Yelp and made an appointment with Krista, their resident curl whisperer. When I arrived, they got me a free glass of wine, which is fantastic. Then we went right to the dry cut. Krista talked it over with me thoroughly before getting the scissors out, which is great, and she took off my wispy-long ends, which IMMEDIATELY made my hair look ten times better. The cut alone is worth what I paid for my entire visit (which, if you're looking for downsides, certainly isn't cheap!). She explained some products that would be helpful to me and showed them to me--they were exactly what I was looking for (things that wouldn't leave a "gel cast" in my hair--my curls are waaayyyy too thin for heavier products). Then I went over to Molly for my color! I was going for a lavender balayage from my natural ash-blondish color, and Molly did a great job. It's exactly what I wanted, and I'll definitely be coming back soon. TLDR: Curly people, come here. This place knows what's up. read more

My hair has never felt healthier! I found Lavender Park through my stylist Maggie. Maggie is new to the Chicago area and to Lavender Park. She reached out to me because she is in her apprenticeship at Lavender Park, but you would never know. She was the first stylist I have EVER had to ask very detailed questions about the cut and color I was looking to achieve...and I mean detailed. Since she is still apprenticing another stylist was nearby to listen to my answers and help guide her in the right direction. Maggie took my hair from an unhealthy bleached blonde back to my natural brunette color. She explained the entire process to me so I was never lost during the process. Maggie also got me hooked on some products without being pushy about it. She was very real about the science behind the products and why they were better. Lavender Park has sample sizes (that you can purchase) to try them out. I did and I am loving them. It's a very welcoming atmosphere and the prices are very reasonable for the city of Chicago. I highly, highly recommend Jenna P. for her cut and color services! She is amazing at what she does. Chicago has so many salons (good and bad) so it is difficult to weed through them all.. but once I found Lavendar Park, I knew I wouldn't have to go anywhere else. The location is great, just a few blocks off of the Fullerton el stop, so coming from the loop is no problem. Jenna is attentive and a perfectionist. She will listen to you and make sure she understands what you want. Her execution is flawless, and she is perfectionist making sure every cut is perfect. I haven't had a haircut in over a year. I have curly hair that is fairly out of control. My fear of the triangle cut has kept me from doing anything but let it grow... A couple weeks ago I read an article about Krista and her curly hair cutting skills. I figured it was coming up on winter, so if it didn't work out, I could always wear a hat. After searching for a new stylist, it was miss after miss. As someone with thick/coarse curly hair who wears it straight sometimes, I was suffering with triangle hair for a long long time. No stylist was layering my thick hair to scale. Wispy layers disappear in my mop. After reading reviews, I was eager to meet with Alondra. She.is.amazing. Alondra listened to everything I had to say and completely transformed my hair back to layered sexiness! My hair looks great straight (less bulk/triangle effect) and looks proportioned and evenly voluminous while curly which is exactly how I love it. It's a no from me. The salon is incredibly fast paced - which is great if you have easier to manage hair (I do not). I feel that communication between the salon and customers was poor. I had to drive around for 30 minutes looking for parking because of an annual event that causes issues with parking near the salon (the receptionist mentioned that an email went out to inform clients, but I didn't receive one). In addition to the parking issues, I have a hair color that's not even close to the color I wanted (I went in for a rose gold/pink balayage and a blow dry/flat iron. I showed a reference picture of what I wanted and was told it would be a bit darker (my hair is like a level 3/4 naturally with 3c/4a curls/coils), My hair lifted to a level 8 and is currently magenta that looks red in certain lights (which is way darker than rose gold/pink) which they said "would lighten over time". I do not want hair that has to lighten over time. I want the color I want and if it wasn't possible to get the color that day, the stylist should have said so. I would've been up to investing the time and money over multiple sessions to get the color. The salon filled up with people so fast that my blow dry partially took place by the shampoo bowl because they didn't have an open station so I had to turn awkwardly toward a guy that was getting his hair shampooed. I got the sense that the assistant who was assigned to blow dry my hair was over it (me too sis, but that's why I paid for someone else to do it). It became very obvious that they didn't know how to style my hair type. I like the placement of the balyage and the products they used on my hair, but the color is not cute at all. The attempt at a flat iron was a fail (multiple passes with minimal heat - I didn't even let her finish). If you have a 3c or more hair type, this isn't the salon for you. read more

*for people with strange textured/curly hair* I really don't want to be unnecessarily negative in this review, as I feel like a lot of the problems I had were my own doing, but my experience was still not ideal and I feel like it might help someone else to hear them. I saw Monica, and she seems great, we had good conversations and she seems like a great person. That said, curly hair works really different than other hair, and mine in particular is fine, frizzy, and difficult to manage, but if you do it right, it can look really good. No one EVER styles my hair at a salon in a way that makes me feel good about myself, and since air drying my hair is the only way to get it to look right, any attempts at styling usually (literally) fall flat. When you get a devacut or other haircut specifically for curly hair, they cut your hair dry, because that's the only way you can see how the hair curls naturally. THEN they "shampoo" (they use a no lather formula because scrubbing your curls makes them break and frizz), scrunch in the conditioner and rinse gently, scrunch in the product while it's' still really wet, then they let it dry gently under the dryer to check to make sure no additional layers are needed. This takes longer than a normal cut, I feel like I probably should have scheduled my appointment for two time slots at Lavender Park because it seemed rushed since I was the last client of the day. The extra time and attention required are probably why Devacuts cost $200 from someone who knows how to do them well. Also probably why the only place in town I know of that does Devacuts has a waitlist for months out and I couldn't get an appointment soon enough even if I wanted to pay $200. All of that said: my haircut isn't terrible, my life isn't ruined. It's healthier than it was when I went in, and that was my main goal. I feel like Monica probably thinks I hate her, I don't, I just should have made better life choices and spared us both. Also I only paid $60 with tip and that's a pretty good deal, but next time I think I'll wait and pay for a curly cut. read more

What more can say about Lavender Park that has not already been said?! This place is amazing! I've been to 2 of the hairstylists here (Molly and Deanna) and they're just the sweetest. I have curly/wavy hair, so often times, my new haircut doesn't "do what it's supposed to". But these guys listen, give you inputs and create the best for you. They never pressure you into a type of style you're not comfortable with, but also guide you (based on what you want) to try something that works for you. She does a great men's cut for my husband and then turns around and does a great cut and color for me too. I got a few inches cut off and all around highlights to brighten up my blonde. I tried out Lavender Park for the first time a little over a month ago. I am very picky about who cuts my hair but took a risk. Molly cut my hair and did an amazing job! I have very thick long hair and she knew exactly how to cut it and style it. The staff in the salon is very friendly and accommodating. Salon is cozy and very clean. I came back a week later for a balayage appointment with Molly and she did a great job again. She also used the right products so I didn't leave with brittle hair after having to bleach it since it is naturally so dark. I am always hesitant to go to a new salon because so many people assume cutting curly hair is the same as straight and then you end up with a crazy mess when it's dry. But I just moved to Chicago, and I badly needed a haircut and highlight. A friend (with curly hair!) recommended Lavender Park, and now I won't go anywhere else! They were very friendly on the phone while making my appointment, and when I arrived they offered me something to drink while I waited (who doesn't love a little vino while getting pampered at a salon??) While waiting, I noticed that it smelled really great, which I find to be a plus, since too often you walk into a hair salon and smell chemicals. Molly was my stylist and she was fabulous. She listened to my ideas, but made suggestions to give me the best of what I wanted. She was also incredibly detail-oriented, and paid close attention to how she placed my highlights and the length of my layers.
