I had a fantastic massage with Matthew. He truly had a great understanding of trigger points and hope to release them.

I booked a 60 mins massage with a therapist named Dan. As soon as I walked in, the therapist told me that my skin was very sensitive (I am a medical professional) and he is not going to use medium-hard pressure, instead he is going to use light pressure- I listed while booking the massage that I need a medium pressure. He the started giving me medical advise (which I never asked for) that I should go see a doctor for my skin. The massage was below average. He was very rude and arrogant, I had to cut short my session by 20 mins. When I came out of the room- the front desk staff was least interested on why I cut down my session by 20 mins. They never asked a single question what went wrong and how could the improve. Overall, a very bad experience, I don't think I will come back again to LaVida. read more

It was my first time here and I was able to use my SpaFinder gift card that I got for Christmas. The staff were amazingly helpful and patient over the phone when booking, as the gift cards were a bit confusing. My sister and I both got massages in the couples room. He did a good job at focusing on the parts that he thought I needed like my neck and shoulders. This definitely wasn't the best massage but certainly not the worst. I've had quite a few massage's in my life and know what to expect when I try out a new place. This was by far the worse massage I've had. I booked a deep tissue massage, 60 mins. There was nothing deep about it. I'm a bigger dude and had a very tiny woman, which in the past I've had smaller women generate a fair amount of pressure. The entire thing seemed rushed. The 2 areas I asked to be a focus, weren't focused on at all. Every time I asked for more pressure, I didn't get it. There was a lot of shaking, foot/leg slapping, and pulling the sheet over my head to rub the sheet over my scalp. By far the worse experience I've had. read more

Wow! I had THE BEST massage today! I have had A LOT of massages over the years and if this one wasn't the best, it was a close second. Eva did a fantastic job working out my knots without excruciating pain. She incorporates "Chinese medicine" into her massage. It was a combination of deep tissue, minor stretching and ??? I don't know how to describe exactly what she did, but it felt great! I had a 90 minute massage and would definitely recommend over the 60. I tried planning a surprise couples' massage for my boyfriend and I initially so I told them not to contact him in any way shape or form. I even didn't want to give them his number (which they needed for some reason), but they insisted and they agreed not to call him. Low and behold they not only called him to confirm the appointment , but they also texted him too! Here's the thing though, I was never given a phone call or text. And I was the one who made the appointment And put my card number down! So there goes that surprise. However, the experience itself was good. The facility was very clean and had a relaxing atmosphere. Check in was quick, they got us into the session on time and the consult between masseuses was effective. I like this place because it's in the neighborhood and affordable (or so I thought) and was looking forward to going back a second time after enjoying my first massage there. Upon confirming over the phone I was quoted $60 for $60 minutes but was charged $80 and wasn't refunded when I called about it. Apparently only your first massage is $60 which for me as a college student is already expensive, but any massage after is $80. I just went there today, and I immediately signed up for the benefit program, which saves you $20 for each massage if you just go there without the program. Normally when you get a professional massage it's at least $60/hr if not more. If you sign up for the benefit program, it's $49.95. It's really a good value! First time you go to this place, you get an introductory rate of 39.95 for 60min massage. It's so reasonable! Ok, enough about the price.. I had my massage with Meghan. She is AWSOME! She's very friendly, and she has a peacefulness in her presence that won't make you feel self conscious or intimidated. She's also very good at massaging in my humble opinion. She immediately knows what parts of your body need more attention. She's very accommodating. I asked for a deep tissue massage, and my body hurt and felt comfortable at the same time!!! Enjoyed a couples massage at this location. Steve gave me my massage and was friendly, a good listener, and knowledgeable. I shared my problem areas and he focused on them. He even gave tips on how to fix them and I felt really refreshed after the massage. He was very in tune with how the body connects and I will be back! I prefer less pressure, but I know that it was needed on certain parts of my body. We also got free aromatherapy for our first visit! The front desk staff was very polite as well! Very very highly upset. I've been a member for about 4 years. It use to be very good and never had a problem. Up until this year it has been nothing but a stress for me. We have a membership so my husband and I can come in for a couples massage. We had a problem months ago of being charged 100 a month for one membership versus 49.95. They said we didn't pay for me after leave high my husband always pays cash. After arguing with corpate we said whatever and continued our membership. Booked an appointment today, October 10th and had to cancel because my father had a emergency (he has bad health) when I called to reschedule the lady on the phone said she would wave the no show fee of 25 dollars but charged my account. I rescheduled for this coming Monday no problem. Then 20 minutes later I receive a phone call saying we have to pay full price because we are not a member. I argued that I am and I need a manager or owner to contact me. The girl said ok, then I get an a mail that they are terminating my member ship for always being late and no shows. Mind you this was the only time I ever had to reschedule!!!! The email also was bringing up a problem from months ago that corporate and figured it out. Then to tell me I have this option or that option or nothing else?!?!?! I called the office right back and Madeline answered. When I explained what happened and asked for the girls name who was working the morning shift she would not give me it. I have never in my entire life ever been disrespected like this. As a member this is what I'm paying for??? You guys have new employees every time I come and not it's making sense. Honestly this place deserves no stars. I called to book 3 massages for me and my parents and was insulted by the store representative booking appointments. I had asked whether my party could switch massage therapists before the appointment date - she asked me "have you ever had a massage before", implying my question was completely divorced of any education or prior experience getting massages. I had in fact had multiple massages before at nice hotels, where there is a similar process whereby the customer selects a type of massage they want but the massage therapist can personalize or modify based on the clients needs during the appointment. When I told her about my previous experience, she started saying "No no no no" and explained how LaVida is completely different. Fine, but her tone was incredibly condescending and rude. When I informed her that she was being rude to me as the customer, she entered into a defense tirade about how she was 48 and had an MBA and would not be talked to by someone who "knew everything." I have no idea what I said to imply that I "knew everything"--I had simply expressed my thoughts on my satisfaction at the customer experience I was receiving. Then she told me she would not book any appointment for me, and that if I wanted to book at LaVida I would need to call back and talk to a different representative. This is so ridiculous. I have thankfully never had a prior experience where a customer representative cannot be polite when answering customer questions and instead becomes hyper defensive (thinking she needed to state her credentials to me) during the conversation. Safe to say I will not be booking any future appointments at this establishment. read more

My first two massages at Lavida were great. This last one was strange. I mentioned prior to the start of the massage I had lower back, upper back, and leg pain. Not enough pressure was used, even though I told her to use more. All I received were fingernails digging into my skin, an elbow pressing into my shoulder for a lengthy period of time rolling painfully over a knot, and light swirling motions with lotion. That would be 50 dollars and an hour of my time wasted. Luckily, the friend I gave a gift certificate to had a good experience. Otherwise I'd be extremely embarrassed! I got into a car accident 3 years ago which left me with chronic left sided neuropathy mainly radiating from my neck and down my arm. My back is pretty messed up too. I've only been here once because my normal place didn't have an opening. Price: the price is excellent. Introductory rate fo $39.95 for a 60min massage. Then if you sign up for the benefit program it's $49.95. The price definitely attracted me. Environment: Definitely loved the interior of the massage therapy room. Very relaxing. The CON was that the massage bed wasn't slightly heated. I've had TONS of massages since my accident at various places and normally the blankets or the table is slightly warm/heated so I was disappointed when it was cold (especially against your skin) Service: I forgot who my massage therapist was. She was very nice and gentle. I asked for a deep tissue massage but she couldn't put TOO much pressure on me because I was in so much pain from the rain (which makes my pain worse). She was very attentive when I explained my injury and where it hurt. She also massaged my feet because I told her I had plantar fasciitis from training for a marathon. I was SUPER pleased by this! Even though she was good.. i still came out of it in a lot of pain and not relaxed. I should have asked for a sports-medicine therapist which I normally do... however... the only other person available with sport-medicine training had bad reviews from another yelper (review can be found in the filtered section). She just didn't know where to massage like my other massage therapists at Balance Massage. I just told the therapists at Balance the same information and they knew the money spots of where to focus on. This place isn't horrible and i"m pretty sure they are amazing for regular massages.. but for someone like me who has chronic pain from an accident with a semi truck... it just wasn't enough. read more

WORST MASSAGE! I went here today for a couples massage with my husband. We usually go to other places in Ann Arbor, but wanted to try Lavida because of their advertised special of $39.95 for an introductory massage. Had this been my first professional massage experience, I don't think I would ever get another professional massage. Andy was the massage therapist that Lavida selected for me. Upon meeting him, he seemed nice, but held himself a little bit awkwardly. Everything seemed to be fine until the massage started, and I noticed that Andy has a tremor of some kind that causes him to shake profusely. When he touches you, it is very evident that he is shaking and cannot hold his hands or arms still. For me, it was incredibly uncomfortable, distracting, and not at all relaxing. His technique and pressure were not consistent, and he was extremely sweaty, which resulted in even more discomfort for me. At one point, I considered asking Andy to stop massaging me, because his profuse sweating and shaking was making me so uncomfortable, however, I did not want to interrupt my husband's massage, as he was in the room with me. Instead, I found myself waiting/hoping for the massage to end and asking Andy to focus on areas where his sweating and shaking were not as evident to me. I would not recommend Andy to anyone! On another note, my husband said that his massage (from a woman at Lavida) was okay, but he's had much better. Overall, I would highly recommend AVOIDING Lavida. If you do take advantage of their introductory massage, do not select Andy as your massage therapist. I'm sure there are decent massage therapists in this establishment, however, after experiencing a massage from Andy, I would never go back. So I have been here a few times. I have to say the staff is very accommodating and very motivated being a new business. The first three times I have gone have been good, however when asking for deep tissue massages I think sometimes you have to voice your opinion. Horrible service. I had gotten a recommendation from a customer. The young girl who was at the front desk(overweight and short platinum blonde hair), was very rude. She seemed as if she didnt want to help me at all! Mind you..she was very short with me, given the fact she was munching away at her lunch! I dont know if she was on her lunch break or if thats one of the company's leeways for their employees, but when I came in to ask her a question, she paused me mid talk, burped, and got up to throw away her trash. I have ad multiple massages and facials here. I immediately signed up for the benefits program about a year ago when I first started coming. I love the fact that the front desk girl asks you what kind of massage you are looking for, and then they will pair you with the therapists they see fit to help you. They are also VERY accommodating. Heated beds, aromatherapy, heat therapy. I've also seen that they do a massage with bars on the ceiling! I cannot wait to try that. The facials are great too. Amber (?) used a chocolate mask on my face and it smelled so amazing! The only thing i wish they would bring back, is the original membership that is $50 a month no strings attached.
