First time here and honestly disappointed. Called this morning to double-check that they were open and so that we could place a phone to-go order. Nobody answered; it was a non-stop busy signal. So we drove over, placed a breakfast order and only after we place the order and paid were we told the order would take 45-60 mins. That's something they should have told us before we placed the order. The food also was just okay which was surprising because this place was packed so I would assume that the food would be good. On top of it all, their indoor capacity would definitely not pass county Covid safety protocols. There was about 40+ people dining indoors. This business is a hot mess. read more

I swung by Lawson's Bakery for breakfast twice on my road trip through Northern California. It is a small, family owned spot that offers both breakfast and lunch items. There was a short, 1-2 person line both times I visited that moved quickly. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. My party only waited about 5 minutes at our table before our large breakfast orders were brought out fresh from the kitchen. The food was absolutely delicious . I had the good fortune of meeting the owners Jeffrey and Natalie. Prior to opening this bakery, apparently Jeff was an executive chef at Rosewood CordeValle Resort and it shows! The breakfast burrito was delicious and too big for me to finish in one sitting... I usually am known for my large appetite. They also make a seasonal bowl with fresh, local ingredients which was wonderful. There are gluten free and vegan items at this place as well but I didn't try them. When I am visiting family in San Jose, Morgan Hill is a nice half-way point to meet-up with a friend who now lives in Hollister. I suggested getting breakfast, she suggested Lawson's and I'm glad she did. I had the breakfast sandwich on the 2nd-hand recommendation of her kids, who do eat meat. She had the veggie breakfast burrito, and we shared beignets. I felt a pang of regret when she cut her burrito in half and I saw it was chock full of asparagus -- apparently they use whatever seasonal vegetable they have rather than some pre-determined mix, so I suppose it is worth asking what the seasonal vegetable is -- but the breakfast sandwich, while basic, was satisfying as well. The beignets were more like beignet bites, little perfectly fried dollops of not-too-sweet dough with a custardy center. They were perfect as is -- I didn't get around to trying the caramel sauce they are served with. I also picked up a few things to go to take home to my mom -- blueberry min-scones, a seasonal sugar cookie, and an oatmeal butterscotch cookie. All were good, but the scones were particularly good. They were on the fluffier side of that short biscuit to shortbread continuum that scones reside in, and I believe they used fresh blueberries since the color was truly blue and not a jammy purple. Again, sweet but not too much so. The bakery is still following COVID protocols, which is interesting (and something I appreciate!) since I am visiting from another part of the country that eased everything up almost as soon as the CDC issued guidance that vaccinated people do not need to wear masks. They have a nice system down -- masks required to enter, one entrance and one exit, plexiglass barriers at the cashier station, hand sanitizer available, etc. I do think I would have been comfortable coming here pre-vaccine (outside of big COVID waves/high rates of community transmission, of course) to support a small business doing things right. read more

I've given this bakery many tries and I've reached my limit in patience. Today took the cake ( you see what I did there?). Anyway, the short of it was that I called to see if my cake was ready, was told that it was, hauled both small, sick, grumpy kids down to pick it up and was told it was not ready... to wait 13 minutes until noon ( my original pick up time ) which my kids were not capable of. Ok...headed home and put one grumpy child to bed then came back and got an excuse as to why it wasn't ready and then charged my full amount. I totally understand mistakes happen BUT no offering of a discount or letting my kid pick a cookie or something to apologize for the mistake? I've had really good breakfast burritos for 5 or 6 dollars that were very good sized so my standards are pretty high especially for a breakfast burrito that costs 13 dollars. I took the chance off of the good reviews. I was a little unimpressed when I opened the bag to my order as it was about half the portion I would have expected. I took two bites and it was so salty I couldn't even eat the thing. I had to throw it away. We absolutely love Lawson's! My husbands birthday was last week and I was looking for a lemon cake for him. I called Lawsons on Monday and was able to order a 6" lemon cake for pick up that Thursday. Price was great and my husband said it was the best lemon cake he ever had, he absolutely loved the lemon curd inside. He let me know he wants thIs to be is go to birthday cake from now on. Great baked goods! We especially liked the blueberry scone and the oatmeal butterscotch cookie. The breakfast burritos were also flavorful and filling. My only complaint is that I wish it was more clear on the menu which veggies you'll get in the veggie breakfast burrito - I was expecting something like bell peppers, spinach or tomatoes, but it was actually snap peas and asparagus. It's a salty obnoxious sausage flavor and it really dominates every bite. The bacon is not good kinda hard to chew. Their wheat flour tortilla gets hard and kinda ruins the whole breakfast burrito experience. It's a no go for me. The pastries are good but coffee is not. I also had to wait like 20 min for one burrito and it was not busy at all. There was no friendly greeting either, only to the regulars. I gave it 3 tries here and I still don't leave satisfied. One of the best bakeries I've been to in such a long time. Lawson's is a cutesy, modern bakery in a small plaza off Monterey Rd. in Morgan Hill. Since it is tucked away in the corner you can easily miss it but you really shouldn't. I found out about this lovely bakery through one of my Yelp friends, the pictures captured my eye and the reviews were all great so I thought since I'm frequently in the area I will go one morning and give them a try. I live in the East Bay so they aren't close to my house but I would gladly drive 45 mins out of my way to come here, they are that good. The weekends is when this place gets really packed, sometimes the line is out the door. Once you walk inside you can see directly to the kitchen which is something that I like, nothing beats seeing your food and the baked goods being prepared and cooked. There is also a big display case with all the yummy baked goods, they have all the usual items such as sticky buns, bread pudding, cookies, coffee cake and various other pastries. They also serve hot breakfast items as well such as breakfast burritos, quiche, omelets and their popular star shaped Beignets. Everything looks and smells so awesome that it can be difficult to figure out what you should get. Their tuxedo cheesecake bars and their blondies were very yummy but the real star to me was their Beignets. Unlike the traditional square Beignets these are star shaped and instead of being covered in powdered sugar they are covered in cinnamon and sugar, served with their homemade caramel sauce. These light and airy Beignets go great with the caramel sauce. Not only are the baked goods delish but the service here is wonderful, everyone here is very friendly and they treat you like family. I definitely will continue to come here either when I'm in the area or I will make a special trip here and I will be trying these breakfast burritos that everyone is raving about!! read more

Made a long-awaited visit to try the much anticipated beignets. Absolutely loved them. I haven't had many beignets, but what I tasted seemed like a superb rendition. The outside was noticeably crisp but quickly gave way to a fluffy interior that melts in the mouth. With the dusting of powdered sugar, it's enough to enjoy without the caramel sauce, which is not overly sweet or thick. There's around ten pieces in this $6.50 order, but I shared most of them away. I got a breakfast burrito on the side. It wasn't a huge portion, but it should fill up most people. If you'd asked me about paying $8 a few weeks ago, I would've balked, but considering the recent spike in egg prices due to some California state law, it's quite a solid value for the huge amounts of egg, plus potatoes, bacon, sausage, cheddar, and scallions in a tortilla. Unfortunately, I wasn't blown away. Perhaps some chorizo flavor and more pronounced cheese texture would have helped. I'd try something else or go elsewhere for a savory treat. Let's forget about that burrito though. Best beignets in Morgan Hill! Possibly the only beignets in Morgan Hill too. All kidding aside, I really have been thinking about them all day after (or because of) eating just a few, and they should match up favorably at least against anything that San Jose offers. Waited for our third visit before posting a review. We've gone primarily for the Breakfast Menu. Breakfast Burrito, Vegetarian Burrito, Quiche Lorraine Omelette, and the Two Egg Breakfast were all tasty and delicious (special shout out to the Omelette!) On one of the visits we tried a slice of the Quiche Lorraine itself. Rich, thick and tasty but you need to really really like bacon. It's loaded with bacon. Arguably too much bacon (the family is divided on this point). The baked goods that we've tried are all pretty darn good (cookies and croissants). So much so that we were inspired to buy a full cake. I asked my daughter to buy a Boston Cream Pie. What we got was essentially a really rich, dense, and dry Chocolate Cake with a smidge of cream filling topped with chocolate ganache. Not sure if this was intentional or if my daughter pointed at the wrong cake in the case. Judging it on its own, the cake was dense, heavy and dry. Too much cake and not enough "cream" to balance it out. I love chocolate but this was Too rich and too dry to enjoy more than a few bites. Last visit was Thursday morning for two breakfast sandwiches. Was busy and it took about 35 minutes to get them handed to us. The part that made me give this review was that the two guys in the kitchen weren't really working. One juggled ears of corn in plain sight of the bench I was siting at, and the other chatted up his regulars out in the courtyard. They didn't start my food until about 5 minutes before I got it. The kicker was that the sandwich looked like it had been tossed into the foil from across the kitchen. Then the entire sandwich was smashed into a gooey greasy mess. Came here for the grand opening. It was busy & the taste reflects that. Took about 20+min to receive our food. I opted for the Apple Cinnamon coffee cake, Quiche Omelet & Beignets Say what you want about a man eating quiche but how often do you see a quiche omelet on the menu? The thick cut bacon was the x-factor in my opinion, none of that paper thin fugazee bacon. Throw in the melted cheese & onions and it was a winner. The apple coffee cake was excellent; moist, sweet and the cooked apple bits were done to perfection. I've had different versions of the beignet. Can't say if it's like the ones from Cafe Du Monde although based on appearance it looks similar. They were light & airy bites of sweetness Aside from a mishap or two in the ordering accuracy, I will definitely return here. I was undecided on which flavor to buy for my daughter's birthday cake. So, I emailed Lawsons to request for cake samples. Natalie Lawson, the owner, responded back to me. I ordered samples for the mocha, velvet, strawberries and creme (which is seasonal), the crunch (forgot the name). Anyways, they were all so delicious it was hard to decide. We decided with the velvet. In addition, I ordered strawberry and mocha cupcakes . They make cupcakes in all of their cake flavors, which is so awesome . Lawsons are very reasonably priced, and they are consistent, this is what I love about them. Everyone at the party loved the cake. The only problem is everyone ate all the leftovers, lol! Stumbled upon this bakery while staying at a nearby hotel for a kid's birthday party. I assumed they wouldn't have premade cakes at 9am and I would be forced to go to Safeway. I was wrong. Their Death By Chocolate cake is so good! Everyone loved it. They also make breakfast foods which looked and sounded so good but I didn't have time. There was a line in front but it moves so fast.
