NOTE: If you're worried about a lot of these apparently low Yelp reviews, go look at Lawton's reviews on the Better Business Bureau's website. They paint a much different picture, and I trust the people's reviews on the BBB more than here. I wrote this first review on October 31, 2014, for the first piano move. I used Lawton's service for moving one console piano from a first-floor apartment in Warren to a third-floor apartment in Warwick. I timed them. From the first touch of the piano to the last roll onto the truck, they took ten minutes. I didn't feel like they were goofing around, especially not when it came to the third-floor move. Among the five movers, there was a mixture of experienced guys and some who seemed a bit new, but despite the diversity, they were careful and attentive. For a third-floor move, they were pretty quick, as well. Lawton Moving communicated well on the phone---by which I mean, simply, they kept in touch. They called at the time they said they would leave. They called a day or two earlier to ask if I wanted the job done earlier in the day than initially scheduled, due to a cancellation. They only went over the two-hour minimum by 15 minutes, so I had to pay a little extra. Now, I read on the web from another local mover who cautions buyers against hiring movers who ask for deposits before the move date, which Lawton does ask for. Maybe it's just the way businesses operate nowadays, and they have costs to cover, for instance, if someone reserves them and doesn't show up or something. But once it was completed, I didn't feel like it was an unsafe thing for me to do. All said and done, a total of $487.50: 2.25 hours at $150 per hour (weekday rate), with a two-hour minimum, plus a $150 charge for the amount of stairs. The deposit of $300 was charged earlier in the week and was figured in as part of the total. I recommend them if you need a piano move. I wrote this second review on January 25, 2016, for the second piano move (same piano). I have used Lawton's service for moving this same console piano from the third-floor apartment in Warwick to a house in West Warwick (on the first floor). I spoke on the phone with Chris on January 22. He immmediately provided me with a quote, which, based on my description, turned out to be much higher than the last move, although that could have been because of my poor describing abilities. He began to recall the move, so he started making more accurate guesses as to what I was talking about. He took down my phone number, asked about the addresses, and requested a picture of the piano to be sure about the size. Minutes later, he texted me with a Google street view image of the move-to address, as he wanted to confirm the layout (where the stairs are in front of the house). After I sent him the picture, he texted me back with a quote, and I was able to negotiate a price that was just a little easier for me to manage. He was glad to hear how satisfied I was with the last move. He said he would let the office know that I would be calling to set up the date for the move. I called the office, and while I didn't get the name of the man who answered, he was nothing but courteous. He took down the information on the addresses, phone numbers, etc, and repeated it all back to me to make sure it was clear. He took the credit card information and confirmed the time and day. So far, so good! Day of move: The movers arrived early, which is not bad, as it was only 10 to 15 minutes early. Before they even wrapped the piano or got things ready to move, they inspected the piano and pointed out specific parts that were already dinged or damaged, which I was actually unaware of, but I acknowledged them. I told them that it showed due diligence and thanked them. They then set to work quickly, and they made it look so easy that I wondered why I didn't just move the piano myself. (Three flights of stairs. Three flights of stairs is why I didn't move it myself.) They knew what they were doing, and it moved like a well-oiled machine. They were careful in where they parked, where they set the piano (like on top of the threshold to the front door, where they tried to limit contact as much as possible, so as not to damage it), and how they were moving. I appreciated that they also looked out for each other, not wanting anyone to get hurt. When it came to the stairs on the front of the house, there were repeated warnings and cautions to take every step slowly and not to slip. I let two younger guys use the bathroom. I appreciate that they didn't just use a bush and that they didn't pee their pants while moving the piano. :) All in all, I was pleased with their work. They were serious about their job, but they were humorous and personable. I recommend them for well-done piano moves. read more

I rarely post reviews online but felt compelled to do so after our amazing experience with Lawton Moving and Storage company. We had an extremely complicated moving situation. We had to move out of a large house in RI (4 stories high), and organize and store things in two categories; half the things would eventually go to a condo in Boston, the other half would go into a storage facility in Needham. The movers handled this seamlessly and everything was labeled and organized perfectly. When we finally moved into our condo, the movers had to bring the things going to the condo, stop at the storage facility first and pick up things that were going to Boston and then handle a move in the heart of the city. They were amazing and it took them less time than we expected. We also had Lawton Movers empty out our storage facility and repack it correctly since it was a mess and we couldn't get to any of our things. I would highly, highly recommend this company and if we ever have to move again, we would use them in a heartbeat! read more

I hired Lawton Movers a few months back and I was appalled, horrified and repulsed at the way I was treated with the exception of one gentleman (Al was his name). The company, from the movers (a man named Tom I believe) to the receptionists at the desk were very rude, obnoxious people and treated me very unfairly. I am in my late 60s and have trouble walking and these men turned a 3-hour job into an 8 hour job and demanded money up front, clearly taking advantage of my disability. They scuffed up almost all of my furniture and the company said they will not be held accountable when clearly I saw them do it. Do yourself a favor and LOOK ELSEWHERE!!! Its a damn shame they can get away with running a business like that. People would be imprisoned if they acted that way when I was growing up. -Frank read more

On the day of our move, the 3 movers - Rick, Matt, and Ukeme - arrived on time and were absolutely fantastic. They were efficient, careful, gentle, kind, and both serious and had a good sense of humor. They finished in less time than expected, they charged us fairly, and nothing was damaged. In fact, once we saw them get started and how well they worked together, we were quickly put at ease and just tried to stay out of their way. I had requested a few quotes from other movers, but all were very expensive or had extra fees attached. Lawton was reasonably priced and very customer focused. They arrived promptly and took about an hour and a half to move my two story condo (including very heavy wooden furniture). Despite their quickness, they took very good care of the furniture. It was raining and they covered everything so it didn't get wet. The price they charged was based on the amount of time they thought it would take, but since they were able to get the job done faster, they gave me a credit which was applied to the cost of storage (which they also provide). Honorable Mention! I signed up today with yelp due to a great job Lawton Movers did for me last week. This company has been around for a long time. Last time I moved was back in 1986 and they did the move. This time around we sold our house and purchased a new house in New Haven, CT We had 6 rooms of furniture, I spoke to Frank at the office, he had such an incredible personality and quoted me a 2 day move. They loaded my Items in N. Kingston the first day and delivered my items to New Haven the following day. Their were 3 men. Joe, Rick and Lou. Lawton moved my family a week and a half ago. I was very impressed with the crew, Jeremy, Joe and Lou. They did an outstanding job and were very hard workers. We had a lot of furniture within 3 floors in the home and it was a very tight staircase. They were able to move all our belongings without a problem. I also took out a window on the second floor, because I wasn't sure if one piece could go down the stairs. I was very happy it didn't have to be hoisted. They completed the job in 7 hours. I was expecting it to take long than that. They did an excellent job and would rehire them at any moment I would need to move. I will refer lawton to all my friends and family. This is my first experience with a moving company, and let me say the team they sent to move us was fantastic!!!!! Zeus and Eric were polite, professional and extremely respectful and did an amazing job!!! They did it with such ease and speed it amazed us. They were patient and understanding and went above and beyond to make sure my mother's belongings where well cared for and dispersed to whichever room / floor ( 3 floor condo) she wanted them to go on. They even went the extra mile if she changed her mind so I just wanted to take the time to say you guys were fantastic!!! And you gentlemen ABSOLUTELY deserve a raise!!! Moved from RI just over state line. Move went very smoothly, the guys worked hard and were very polite and friendly. Our furniture has a lot of glass and we had a ton of fragile things and the way they wrapped it all up prevented any scrapes or shatters. I found them by chance less than a week before my move when I passed one of their trucks on the road and looked them up on here. Having read some horror stories from other moving services on Yelp I was so relieved with the experience I had with Lawton from the initial fast responses, arriving on time and all around attitudes. Wow, what a great experience when we moved with Lawton Movers. We have a large 7 room home in Narraganesett, RI and moved to Wakefield, RI. We had a 4 man crew that was very quick and efficient. All of our belonging were wrapped from the time they were picked up until the time they were put down. They took all of the stress out of a stressful experience. Great local company. From the time I called to get rates from the time they actually did the job was great. The person on the phone gave get a rough estimated cost from what we told him we had and the price fell right into that estimate. It was a small move. DO NOT USE THESE CROOKS!!! I hired them for my move and it was a nightmare!! They loaded the truck and drove back to their warehouse instead of my new home STEALING my belongings. After several unsuccessful phone calls attempting to have my items delivered I had to rent a uhaul and pick the items up. These people are SCAM ARTISTS and crooks and belong in jail.
