First time visitors, on our trip from NE to Austin. I've had chowder from D.C. to San Fran... and their shrimp and scallop chowder is right up there with ones tried at much more expensive venues. The shrimp sauté was very good as well. Messy as all get out since you have to peel to get to the meat, but hey, that Cajun butter garlic whatever sauce makes that a very minor thing. So.. while on our way home we decided to make a late lunch stop at this place after searching on yelp for a good place to eat. We ordered the following: Grilled wedge ceasar salad Grilled wedge salad So glad this place offers the grilled option for both salads. You do have to add a dollar to get them grilled which I think is a bit much but ok we got them anyway. I love grilled romain that much so we paid. Mine was the wedge salad and it was yummy. While I think they could hold back on the dressing I still ate it all. Fried crawfish it came with delicious and crunchy fries too. This was a pretty good dish and a good serving too. Shrimp chowder was ok. I think it could have more flavor to it. I could taste the flour used to make the based for it. It seems like this is a place where the locals come and hang for a beer and good food. Service was fantastic and I know they have plenty of good food to have. By the way my husband really liked the chowder. I just said ok because of my experience with New Orleans food scene is too present in my memory. You never forget those flavors for sure. I took my best friend to Lazy Gator in Amarillo for her birthday today. We have been looking for a good fish/seafood place for a while now. I have not had such great catfish abd cod since I was on the coast. Everything was fresh and delicious. This is now our favorite place for fish. Our waiter, Adam, was great too. Interesting menu. I wanted to try gator so ordereed the gator steaks in Alfredo and char grilled oysters. The gator tasted like chicken. It had good Cajun spice but too salty. I was not impressed and if told it was chicken over rice with Alfredo would have believed it. The oysters were very small when cooked and it made them grItty an d taste like a charcoal brick. The bartender was also my waitress and was very slow and inattentive. It tooK awhile to get her to ask if I needed anything. Most likely cause she was in conversation with some locals. We were looking for a place to dine in while visiting Amarillo and came across LG. We ordered burgers, fries, fried catfish and Shiner beer. The food was great and so was the service. After a day of hiking in the hot canyon, it was nice to sit down and relax at a restaurant with a cold Texas beer. Thanks Lazy Gator. My 2nd trip here. It's now a regular stop for me when I visit Pops. He loves the Cajun Shrimp Alfredo and I'm with gumbo and chowder. Staying in Amarillo for the night as we travel across country for a move and Lazy Gator did not disappoint. We're staying at a local Marriot and weren't feeling the idea of adventuring out due to late evening time so we Uber eats Lazy Gator based on their menu. Everything we ordered was so good! The Gator Gumbo and Crawfish Etouffee were so good and had authentic flavors. Kiddos had cheeseburger and corn dog bites and were definitely happy. The Gator cakes were a great appetizer! Lazy Gator is a great place. This was my second time eating here. This time we got the calamari appetizer and I have to say it was a little different than most places I've been to. They come out in strips instead of the normal circular pieces. Tasted different to me this way. Wasn't bad I would say, just different having to take a bite out of it instead of popping the whole thing on my mouth. For $9, I would think I'd get more than 5 pieces though. Well. I have to say this was one of the most disappointing decisions ever. Arrived in Amarillo tired and hungry. Husband wanted catfish and this place was highly rated. HA! We ordered catfish and fried shrimp. Both were to come with "gator fries." Neither did. We paid extra for Caesar salads, both arrived with no dressing. Lettuce is brown and sad. Shrimp portion was so small it was funny, but my husband was so worried that I wouldn't have enough (sans fries and salad) that he insisted on giving me a piece of catfish. I really want to give this place 4 stars. My favorite is their swamp fries as they do fix their fries to perfection. I have had the shrimp po boy sandwich and did enjoy it. The fried oysters are something to pass on. I tried their boiled shrimp thinking it would come out in a piping hot bag with sauce and spice but really just shrimp cocktail. I should have clarified with the waitress. The space is clean and decor is nice. Large open space with lots of seating and tvs strategically placed. Good place to catch the game. The food is 3 stars for me at this point. I've heard the gumbo needs work from another diner that joined us the past weekend. I will definitely be back as this place is one of our favorites. Very few restaurants get everything right. This one did, and then some. I must say, our server had A-LOT to do with our amazing experience. His name was either Taylor or Tyler. His personality felt very real...like he was at our table just taking to a couple of his buddies. He was very passionate about the quality of the food and gave great recommendations. He chatted with us a bit about non-food related things (where we were from, what brought us into town, why I didn't like my beer, the cowboys game, etc.). When he boxed our leftovers, he even put the date on it so we'd know when not to eat it. We watched the staff while we were dining. Noticed how everyone seemed to get along and be helping each other out. Even though it was fairly slow, no one was just sitting around doing nothing. The staff moved around, checking on/chatting with teammates at the bar and in the kitchen. Cleaning/organizing here and there along the way. Even if there wasn't much to be done they kept the appearance of looking productive. Now, the food! Even despite the 5-Star staff this place still could earn a 5-Star rating on the quality and price of the food alone. Everything was so good. Big portions too! We tried the fried gator, which is the best we've found in Texas yet. I forget the name of the Burger but it's the spicy one...and listen to your server when they say "it's spicy." I love spicy food but it was pretty intense. Great beer selection. Save room for dessert! Key lime pie was really yummy. We'll try the bread pudding next time. Restaurant was clean and well laid out.
