I really wanted to like this place, but my siblings and I unfortunately had our worst experience at a restaurant so far. The ugly part: - My fist sister ordered a chicken tajine (North African dish), as she wanted to add something new/different to our mix of dishes. Both sisters felt the chicken and the rice weren't fresh and there was a weird aftertaste, but wanted to believe it was just a spice and the first ate it anyway. The next day she spent 3 hours in the ER crying her life out before getting admitted, and just got out after 2 nights / 3 days in the hospital to continue her recovery at home. The doctors said it was gastroenteritis (food poisoning). - My other sister had a couple of bites of that tajine and later also had an issue with her coffee. She wanted some milk with it and when she added it to the coffee there were some weird bubbles. She checked that milk separately and it was very clearly bad. She got another coffee but that was the 2nd alert of the night. She also had to go to the ER the next day, but thankfully she was out a few hours later and is feeling good 3 days later. - We don't live together and only met at the restaurant for this dinner, so the common denominator was easy to find. I didn't touch any of the dishes above and I've been totally fine. My main issue was that I ordered a "chèvre chaud" salad and they were super cheap with it, filling the plate with lettuce and placing 2 pieces of cheese on it. For $18 that's a stretch. The sides of rice for our various dishes were also pretty small but it wasn't an issue to be honest. Only mentioning this given what happened after our dinner. - My brother was visiting from Paris and had a steak frites to see how it compares to what he's used to at home. The steak was okay but the fries were, sorry to say, below Mac Donald's. Super thin and soggy, as if they had been unfrozen and then fried in warm oil. Unless they weren't fresh... - Our server was very nice but the addition of a 20% gratuity on the bill was not. We didn't complain and paid but given the experience with the food, it felt excessive and preposterous The good part / redeeming qualities - As already mentioned, the server was nice and overall did a nice job. The problem came from the kitchen, with dishes that didn't taste good and got some of us seriously ill. - We had some good wine and beers + a quick chat with the cook (owner?) at the end of the night, he was friendly too. I believe he's Algerian, hence the tajine dish on the menu. - We had other dishes: my duck confit was fine (except for the soggy fries too), the salmon was fine as well (although the side was tiny). - The venue is not fancy by any stretch but nonetheless there's something charming about it. All considered, I'd be curious to know the health inspection score of this place as I suspect there's a lot of shady stuff going on in that kitchen. Next time I'm in town and crave French food, I'll look for another restaurant and would neither return nor recommend this one to my friends. read more

we were hoping to love this cute place that's been in business for 25 years but it was empty except for another couple and the owner kept the back part dark, not conducive to a pleasing evening. Salad ok but drenched in dressing and with lousy tomatoes; trout and salmon both overcooked and potatoes undercooked. The spinach was good. We don't drink; no bread offered and decided not to try desserts since made by outside source. Not cheap but generous portions. The owner/cook was also waiter and he was attentive. I am very disappointed with my short experience at this restaurant. I didn't make it to the point of ordering food, but this review is about how the atmosphere of a restaurant is just as important as the food. GLOW: - The online menu options look amazing. There is a great variety, and if prepared correctly , it could really good. GROWS: - Walking up, there were dirty tables outside with left over dishes, giving off the appeal of a busy restaurant (maybe they just didn't have time to clean it yet?) - Well, there were absolutely no customers in this restaurant (inside or outside). I don't always write that off as a bad thing, but why aren't tables cleared off? - There was no hostess at the door, we stood there kind of confused about what was going on for a second before we were greeted by 1 of 3 men eating at a table in the rear of the restaurant. - Told to sit anywhere we want, there weren't many options, as the lights were off in half of the restaurant. Very confused about that. - Upon sitting down in the front by the door, which we didn't necessarily want to do, there were black specks all over the white table cloth at out table. - Look to the left, the white silverware napkin is completely covered in stains and sitting on a dressed table- you mean to tell me no one saw that? - The table leg was being held up by a dirty, balled up piece of tissue to keep it from being lopsided. - A few moments later, we are brought over disgusting and filthy paper menus from one of the men who was just sitting down eating. After a long family inquiry and an intense debate about where to eat on a quiet Saturday, we ended up at the bistro and I am so glad we did. -- as an aside, know that this block of real estate offers several tempting possibilities, from pub/tavern fare to burgers to creole--. Anyway, back to the food... It is, as the name implies, a typical French bistro. We arrived when they were serving brunch. Five of us ordered three different things. Everyone was very happy. I ordered the croque monseur. It was phenomenal! The meal came with really good french fries and robust Guyear cheese, perfectly toasted. The fries were actually better than five guys for any french fry connoisseurs is out there... One in our party ordered the soup of the day, fresh mushroom soup, with a side of bread. She was very happy with that. And the others ordered crêpes, which were apparently quite delicious. The prices were reasonable and the espresso drinks were authentic and very good. Do not order the Truite Amandine (rainbow trout)! Although it was a large portion of fish, it didn't matter because I couldn't take a single bite without picking out several bones. In EVERY single bite. I finally gave up and left most of the fish uneaten. Unfortunately, it was a take-out order so it wasn't like I could just send it back. Restaurant only gets one star only because the spinach was fine. Edible, unlike the trout. Also, what was weird was when I went to pick up the order and gave them my name, they asked what restaurant I was picking up from. Even if they have had trouble with people coming in mistakenly before, one would think they would know that they were my intended destination by giving them the name associated with the order. read more

I met a friend here on Tuesday to eat dinner and hear the Stone Hill All-Stars play a gig. I have never been here before and was pleasantly surprised to have a delightful evening. I parked at the MTA parking lot in Mount Washington at around 6 pm. Le Bistro Du Village is a French restaurant that has a reputation as being "the crepe place" in Mount Washington. They do indeed serve crepes, both sweet and savory. My dining companion had the Crepe Nicoise with tuna and it was amazing. I had the warm goat cheese salad (Salade de Chèvre Chaud) with beets. (Beets are in-- have you noticed?) The goat cheese in the salad was two large chunks that had been lightly breaded and deep fried. Combined with baby greens, walnuts, tomatoes, and a balsamic vinaigrette, this was really tasty and healthy. They had an interesting cocktail menu but I am all about the beer. I had a blonde Grimbergen and then a Stella Artois. This place is definitely a bit pricey but considering we also had live music from 6-9, it was an incredible deal. The Stone Hill All-Stars seem to be an amalgamation of the defunct Polkats and Two Legs. There were four guys in the band and they were all terrific. It was not too loud and the filled restaurant was very appreciative of this performance. I loved hearing their original songs as well as a cover or two. You can tell that these guys have played together for a long time-- they make what they do seem effortless. The crowd was definitely an older demographic on this evening. I came here before the pandemic, and the food was really good. I was there less than a week ago, and I am not impressed. There was no one in the restaurant, and there was a sign on the door stating that they were open but that you should call a number. As the door was open, I walked in. There was no one there, but they were some menus on the table. They were all a bit stained. I couldn't find a menu that looked clean. Finally, a man in the back (the owner?) then saw me and actually had the gall to ask me if I had reservations. I tried not to laugh. He later served as our waiter but seemed rather disinterested. (I get it. No one was there. But then, why stay open?) The food is good but definitely not filling. The prices are high for the portions. (I know crepes are not meant to be heavy but 2 crepes, a salad, and two of their cheapest glasses of wine were almost $75!) Overall, the not-so-friendly atmosphere combined with high prices for very tasty but light fare means I will not be returning. read more

Glad I found this place! It's a bit of a drive outside of the typical tourist spots to Baltimore, but we'll worth it I'd say. The place is small, and only had 1 waiter at the time, not sure if that was typical, but getting food did take longer than usual. I'd definitely come back and just may order the Crepe Marie Antionette all over again, and again, and again. :) You get huge lumps of crab meat, huge shrimp, and a very delicate yet flavorful sauce. read more

What a great little, romantic, cozy restaurant! We are there on a Monday night and the place was unfortunately, for them, empty. Weather wasn't so great. This gave us some quality time with the owner. I had the duck special and we had a crepe Suzette for dessert. The menu is impressive and very well curated. The duck was very well cooked, with just a bit of crispiness, but not overdone or dry. The crepe Suzette was drenched in butter and was as perfect as you can get. It went VERY quickly. We didn't need a reservation that night, but I can see this place getting very busy. Parking in the area sucks, so budget extra time. read more

The food was surprisingly tasty despite the restaurant appearing to be understaffed. They specialize in crepes but have changed their name, presumably to market their more diverse offerings. I had the confit duck with orange sauce. I wish the frites were crispier, but they were still delicious and well-salted. I recommend giving them a try if you like interesting French cuisine or a romantic atmosphere but also the casual comfort of a TV nearby. read more

Last night I went to this restaurant. I am a Francophile. Since my dogs were with me, I sat outside. Given that there was only one server and many indoor customers my service was fine. I had two glasses of wine because I needed to pass 2 hours outside of my home which was being viewed by potential buyers. I ordered the almond trout in butter sauce with spinach. It tasted very good. I finished at 7 or so. Like a medical text book, 12 hours later I was bloated, having explosive diarrhea, and vomiting. My stomach had been bloating from about 5am but everything really started at 6:41am. Not sure what to do with this retelling. But I'm still suffering the effects of the night at 1pm. I had an enjoyable experience the first time my fiancé and I ate here, so we decided to go back for Valentine's Day. I made a reservation, which had to be secured with a credit card. Unfortunately, an unexpected snow storm hit. About 2 hour before our reservation, we watched out our front door as cars and SUVs struggled to get up the hill out of our neighborhood, losing traction, slipping, and sliding all the way back down. He looked at me. "We can't go out in this." With very little food in the house (and both of us looking forward to a romantic meal after we'd spent the past week apart) canceling our reservation was the LAST thing we wanted to do, but there was no choice. I reluctantly called the restaurant and when I said I needed to cancel because of the snow, the man who answered the phone said "Hold on while I get the owner." I explained to the owner that we couldn't make it because of the snow and he informed me he was going to charge me $45. (There was no mention of such a charge when I made the reservation through Open Table.) I would have understood a $10 or even $15 charge, given that it's Valentines Day on a Saturday, but $45?? I argued with him that was unfair given the circumstances. He spat with irritation, "Everyone else is here. Why can't you come?" "Because there is three inches of snow on the road and our street hasn't been plowed yet." "Fine. What's your name?" I gave it to him. "Fine."--AND HE HUNG UP ON ME. I was speechless at the rudeness I dealt with from the OWNER of this establishment. I liked the place, and we probably would have gone back numerous times. I like dessert....okay....I LOVE DESSERT. The dessert crepes are delicious here. I have never been disappointed with the dessert crepes at Crepe Du Jour. After stuffing our faces with Indian food, my friend and I went to Mt. Washington for crepes. Weird combo, but he has never had crepes and I was craving. I ordered the crepe st. germaine. It was a simple crepe with apples and ice cream. The apple pie a la mode of the crepe world. Delicious. My friend got the crepe Mt. Washington and greatly enjoyed it. Service was quick and kind. One server, many tables. But, he did a great job in making us feel welcome. Great place. Only wth about this was the plates. They were New Years plates that said 2000 all over them. If I recall correctly, tomorrow evening will be the mark of 2010. These plates are dated.....literally. Haha, but it's okay because the crepes rock and service is awesome. read more

A year ago, we were not pleased with the menu. Many of the dishes that we had enjoyed previously had become . . . well, not very good. We spoke honestly with Mustapha, the owner/chef, whom we have been friends for many years, since his days with a pushcart at the Village of Cross Keys. He took our criticisms to heart and made key changes that have markedly improved the menu. The soup of the day was shrimp and corn bisque. Mustapha's bisques have always been excellent and this was also a winner. Succulent shrimp in a lovely bisque with corn and other finely diced vegetables. The sweetness of the corn married perfectly with the shrimp. His onion soup has returned to its origins of having a rich beef broth with an abundance of caramelized onions, topped off with a slice of bread and oven-fired gruyere cheese. We next had his moule provencale, his signature mussels in a tomato and wine-based broth with garlic and capers. All of the mussels were plump and opened. We were thinking about asking for more bread to sop up the delicious broth but decided against it, only because we wanted to save room for the main course. Noticing that his chicken chasseur was not on the menu this fall season, I send Mustapha a text asking if that delectable item might be available as a special. He made it for Gloria and myself, using a full-flavored organic chicken he personally purchased from the nearby Whole Foods market. Made with a lovely (and not heavy) sauce of chopped tomatoes, onions, white wine, mushrooms, herbs, and stock, the dish was superb. The accompanying potatoes and asparagus complemented the dish well. Because we were of the opinion that his margin for chicken chasseur was break-even, we made up the difference with an appropriately generous gratuity. And by the way, on a previous evening of dining at Le Bistro du Village, I thoroughly enjoyed Mustapha's new version of the classic and quite hearty French fall-winter dish, cassoulet. It was not as soupy as other styles and the flavors were more dense and rich. The Toulouse sausage and duck confit were exceptional, and the beans were cooked to the proper level of creaminess. The overall flavor profiles were excellent, and moreover, I would give this one a nod over the same quite delicious offering at the venerable Petit Louis. Highly recommended! read more

I'm confident enough to call myself a regular at Crepe Du Jour. I went there 2x in 5 days this week and I absolutely love it. I brought 4 of my lady friends to enjoy the taste of France. They were all equally in heaven and basically swooning over each menu item. I also went to Valentines Day. There's too much to say about this place and why it rules, you can get anything on the menu and not be disappointed. I've only stuck with the savory and sweet crepes though, nothing on the entree side like steak or duck. I'm sure they are good too but if you go to a crepe restaurant GET CREPES! Marie Antoinette, Oceanic, Florentine, Jura, calamari as an app are my favorite. And the dessert one I usually create my own and add a bunch of sweets like Nutella, banana, strawberry, brown sugar, honey, etc etc! Just a heads up, the service can be slow so expect to relax and soak up quality time with your comrades. The servers have always been great and treated us exquisitely despite longer waits. The restaurant is inside an old house and there isn't a large amount of seating so I recommend making a reservation. Mt Washington itself is a very cutesy area so it's great to go there during the day, check out the Whole Foods, shop at the chic little stores and finish off the evening with CDJ. read more

It's cold and windy in good ol' Bmore right now so I was craving some delicious comfort food for Sunday Brunch! I wanted something sweet and I love me some Mt. Washington so we decided on crepes of course! Parking is always annoying in Mt. Washington so you might have to walk, but it's a small walk:) Right on Sulgrave avenue, cute and cozy restaurant. Ordered some chamomile tea and home fries to start. Waiter was very sweet, slightly nervous but attentive and accommodating. I ordered a Crepe Suzette and asked for strawberries on top and boy was it tasty! Love Grand Marnier and marmalade in general, so those tart yet sweet strawberries really added some wow! Crepe du Jour is one of the family's favorite places. I took my daughter and her newest (and to date, best) boyfriend to dinner here. Mustafa was cooking, so this was a treat, and Scott took care of us royally. My standing favorite is the hanger steak, and Mustafa gave me the largest one I have seen in years. Cooked perfectly, of course. Daughter had a duck special, and boyfriend had a steak as well. We started with mussels, and they were reasonably properly prepared. I have tried, over the years, most of the menu. This is dependably good coastal french style food (there is a great hamburger, if your adventure quitient is low). Do not pass up the desert crepe options. Eat well, tip well. read more

Crêpe Du Jour, je t'adore! Very cute and cozy French restaurant with an understated name. My cousins brought me here for crêpes but my gluttonous side that relishes in French food couldn't order just a crêpe. We went on a Sunday evening and there was only a handful of other tables in the dining room so it was fairly quiet. I can imagine the noise level going way up when the place is packed because it's so small. I really wanted to try the Chausson de Fromage de Chevre, but the waitress said they were out of pastry puffs so I went with the escargot instead. The escargot here is cooked out of its shell. Tomatoes are thrown into the butter garlic sauce to give it a slight tang. The baguette served with it was toasted--crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. For dessert, I ordered the Crêpe Royal and a café au lait. The crêpe was very thin which is exactly how I like it, but the fruit wasn't chopped up finely enough. I tasted more strawberries in one bite than I did crêpe and chocolate. One of my cousins ordered the Crêpe Orientale and he complained that it didn't have enough eggs. My other cousin ordered the Crêpe Larsac which had good flavoring but the duck was overcooked. Overall, an okay first experience but I wouldn't mind coming back again. read more

With pretty much every dinner entree approaching $20 (including the salads), if you do order something that's a bit meh, you'll resent it. We visited Crepe Du Jour for the first time yesterday around 3pm with high expectations. I can definitely say our expectations were met. It is located in a very nice area in the most adorable little yellow house. The service was great- very quick and always available. We ordered the coquine and the guillotine crepes, as well as the home fries. I personally enjoyed the coquine more than the guillotine. The coquine has a lot of chocolate sauce inside which pours out when you cut into the crepe. It also had a fantastic melba sauce outside. The two mixed very well together and made the whole crepe absolutely wonderful. I would highly recommend it. The home fries were a nice addition, very garlicy, but still worth trying. Disappointing Mother's Day brunch. Crepes are good, atmosphere charming, service dismal. Almost walked out without paying because it was impossible to get anyones attention to get the check. The owner finally brought the check and said it had to be paid by card (done on your own phone) - he was too busy to take cash - and oh by the way the tip was already included! Food was barely passable. My guess is it was cooked by someone who cared about good food at one point in their life but no longer. I ordered very little as I was turned off as soon as I was seated--dust hanging off the curtains, depressing opera kind of music, tv on a random wall with wires draped everywhere. This restaurant has no soul. had salmon and rice--rice tasted like something frozen and reheated. Salmon was ok. My friend's escargot had massive chunks of garlic that no one would want to eat and his crepes was swimming in too much butter--something he normally wouldn't complain about. Came here to celebrate two birthday's with a larger party on a Sunday for brunch and was very impressed by the food and the fact that the owner allowed me to bring my extremely well behaved, emotional support dog. The menu is unbelievable, lots of delicious specialities and things you rarely find at other restaurants. Everything is made to order and portions are definitely healthy in size. Even the side orders, like a side of fries or homestyle potatoes were huge and easily could have been shared by two or more people. The reason for one less star is that our waiter wasn't very good. Had to ask him multiple times for water and he never came back to refill the glasses, had to be asked multiple times. I was told by one of the members of our party that they had never seen this waiter before, and that Adam was a regular waiter but he wasn't in yet. He didn't offer coffee and tea after the meal, and though he didn't offer dessert, we had a cake that had been brought with us. The waiter was very lackadaisical and just wasn't really up on his game. Overall the food was excellent, crepes were prepared as listed in the menu and were absolutely delicious. Had their hot chocolate with whipped cream and it was wonderful and very tasty, like it had been made from scratch. I had the Crepe La Provincale with shrimp, scallops, tomatoes, onion, goat cheese and parmesan cheese. It was filling and wonderful. The hand cut fries, as I mentioned, were huge. Easily could have been shared by two people. Price wise, this wasn't an overly expensive meal, considering how amazing the food was and the experience. The restaurant isn't very large and I imagine during the week when people are working, that this place draws a very big lunch crowd and they do very well. It wasn't so busy this Sunday that we went, but it was also noon on Sunday. Highly recommend giving this place a try. I recommend talking to the owner if you aren't getting good service from your waitstaff. The owner seems to be the chef and he does a mighty fine job of cooking the exquisite meals! Food is mediocre, ambience is nonexistent. Shows level of Baltimore food scene that this restaurant is still around. Chicken was over cooked and food was generally bland. Rice that came with meal was an odd selection and seemed like it was out of a box. read more

We came here for restaurant week. It was disappointing. They weren't very busy and yet Service was slow. The food was not hot. It could have been good but it was hot food on a cold plate. The bread came out with the meal. And the pLace has no ambience. The escargot was very good and so was the caramel flan. We had to ask for coffee and tea. I would not go back. read more
