Food quality and taste was a mixed bag. The salmon had an amazing sauce and the asparagus and tiny potatoes were amazing. However, the cooking was pretty clumsy (I guess), as the top of the fish had a burnt layer and was served that way. Service was very spotty. My overall impression is that the staff treat it like they're working in a pub - so no real higher end service, not attentive, and not good follow-up. Not what I expect for this price level at all. Atmosphere was a good mix of casual and upscale, but the abundant untreated hard surfaces made conversations tricky, as the ambient noise was very loud, even when the dining room wasn't full. Food: French onion soup is incredible. Mussels were delicious - was surprised it didn't come with toasted bread but then learned their delicious, crunchy table bread is free and unlimited refills. Beef bourguignon was tasty, but heavy. Pork chop was just ok, but the mustard sauce it came with was amazing. French fries almost shoestring, nice and crispy. Extensive wine menu. Per the waitress's recommendation we got the chocolate mousse and it was divine; light, creamy, with homemade whipped cream. I love Foreman Wolf restaurants but unfortunately Petit Louis didn't blow me away. Pros: the food was good, though not amazing. I liked the shrimp bisque (but wanted more shrimp pieces!) and the bread was tasty. I got the black bass which was cooked nicely and the pommes puree I ordered on the side was nice and creamy. I got the profiteroles for dessert with ice cream which was decent, but also not a wow. Cons: parking is tough unless you don't mind walking a bit from one of the neighborhood streets. I'm surprised they don't make the little lot in front valet on weekends. Inside the restaurants the tables feel very on top of one another, plus being a Saturday night it was loud. I could barely hear my husband talk and when I got up to go to the bathroom I felt like I was just in the way of all of the servers moving like crazy around the restaurant. Excellent experience here! Our server was knowledgeable and attentive. All around great service, food, and drinks. We paired our food with a bottle of Chablis which was perfect for our fish and red meat dishes we got. Complimentary bread was provided (always a plus). As an appetizer, we shared the Beignets de Crevettes. Tempura like shrimp and zucchini pieces with an amazing saffron aioli - such a great start to our meal. For our entrees, we got the Magret de Canard (duck breast) and Truite Amandine (rainbow trout). The port wine shallots sauce with the duck breast was divine. The almond brown butter with the trout was mild but paired great with the sliced almonds. For dessert, we shared Crème Brûlée as well as ordered after dinner drinks which were both really good. The crème brûlée was thick and had a great caramelized coating. I can never not order this at a French restaurant. Our server also provided a complimentary peach tart given it was our first time at the restaurant - so nice of him! There is nothing I can complain about. The ambience gives an upscale French bistro vibe and the service provided was one of the best. And then of course the food and drinks were just as good. Outstanding meal, service and restaurant. It was surprisingly very crowded on a Monday evening, but maybe that's how it is at this restaurant. Tables were sort of close together, but it is adequate. It wasn't overly hard to hear and talk. Our server Elliott was great and took care of all of our needs including my date's unusual requests and also her birthday. I had the French Onion soup and it was delicious. My friend's potato leek soup was also very good. I opted for the rainbow trout in a butter sauce over rice pilaf. It was big and filling and very tasty. The others had duck breast, duck confit, steak and the ham and cheese croquettes as well as the beef tartare. Everything looked delicious and since the duck was my second choice I was glad to hear it was outstanding! I saved room for dessert and had the profiteroles with the special cherry vanilla fudge ice cream. The others had creme brulee and chocolate mousse and though they looked good, you don't see profiteroles everywhere and that was perfect. Overall a wonderful meal, great waitstaff and though pricey, it was reasonable for a meal of that caliber. Do yourself a favor and check out this Roland Park restaurant. read more

It has been too long since I've been to Petit Louis. I came for the first time in 2018 after moving here and was super impressed by their famed French onion soup, and the tableside martini service, which is superior. They pour the martinis so full. You literally have to sip it before you even touch it. It's epic. Located in Roland Park it's definitely on the upscale side, but it's still somehow cozy and intimate and feels like you're in a classic bistro. Not a very diverse dining crowd because again it's in Roland Park but the staff and service is amazing here. This is probably my favorite Foreman Wolfe restaurant - and the escargot here is so good. For me the food has been a little inconsistent, as we all went through a pandemic, but I went back recently for the Beaujolais Nouveau release day (a day late - this release is always on the third Thursday of November) and the food was spectacular. The wine was average but was great with the meal. The endive frisee salad was so spectacular I'm still thinking about it. For the beaujolais release day they had coq au vin special and it was the most tender chicken I've had. I'm not even the biggest fan of mash , but the potatoes were also good. I have heard their chicken for two is really delicious, but somehow have never ordered it and all the times I visited. Our server Donovan was a delight, and we had so much fun. Evidently Fridays is a night to go. They had musicians and they offer half bottles of champagne after 8 PM! read more

10/10 dining experience! The restaurant is located in a very cute little square with plenty of parking (it fills up though for highly recommended going earlier). The interior is cozy and inviting. We were also recommended wine that was tasty and paired well with our meals. For my entree I ordered the steak Diane and was so happy with my choice to pick the special of the day. Petit Louis is always exquisite. When you walk in you truly feel like you're in a bistro in France - the restaurant is beautiful. The service is always perfect. Every single dish is delicious. I got the pavot rose as my drink, my friends shared a bottle of white wine, and my boyfriend had a glass of riesling. The complimentary bread and butter is delicious. We shared mussels, gravlox, and eggplant napoleon as our apps. I had the steak frites, my boyfriend had the duck margret, one of my friends had the salmon filet, and my other friend had the bar roti (rockfish). We made our way back to Petit Louis for date night. It was a lovely experience but didn't exactly blow me away like the last time. To start we got the house salad, the mussels, and foie gras. Everything was delicious and the stars were definitely the mussels and foie gras. For entrees, we got the steak frites and the beef bourguignon to share. We asked for the steak to be prepared medium but when it came out, it was pretty rare. My boyfriend tends to like his steaks more rare than me but it was even too rare for him. We sent it back and it came back just right. The beef bourguignon was delicious and had so much flavor. One of the things I remember loving the most about Petit Louis was their dirty martinis. Their stuffed olives are just amazing. However, when I asked for an extra dirty martini, it came super duper dry. It was almost as if it was made extra dry instead of extra dirty. I had to ask for a sidecar of olive juice to adjust it to my liking. Despite the minor hiccups, service was exceptionally friendly throughout. Everyone was so helpful and the food was great. Since I do consider it fine dining and the prices reflect that, I don't expect little hiccups which is the reason for the 4-stars this time around. read more

My first review of the new year. I can't wait to hear what I say! Spousal Unit and I went to brunch with Baby Sister, Der Husband, and Luuuuucy. My first time there, but BSH&L go often. I can see why. First the ambiance: it's warm, nicely decorated, and very comfortable. Tables were not too close and the noise level was very low even though there were quite a few rowdy diners (um, besides us). Second, the service was outstanding. Everyone was warm and friendly AND very professional. I don't normally expect all three. Out main waiter was excellent. We were given time to settle in, order and begin to enjoy cocktails, and review the menu at our own pace. Drinks and food were delivered promptly and we were never rushed. And the food; ah, the food. We shared apps of escargot (but of course) and a ham pate as well as a basket of really nice bread. It was my first experience with snails so I have nothing to compare them to, but Luuuuuucy demolished them. The pate was nice but I was expecting something spreadable rather the very firm slice we were served. Our mains followed and they were worth every second of the drive into Charm City. My magret of duck was perfectly portioned, cooked, and seasoned. Spousal Units poached eggs with ham and hollandaise were excellent (she made them disappear faster than you could say "Houdini"). Baby Sis had the short rib special (we all fought for tastes!), DH went for the omelet (soft, moist, and unbrowned) and Luuuuucy the scrambled eggs (soft, beautiful curds) - what I would expect from a real French Bistro. Oh I wanted to love it. My husband and I are making or way through all the Foreman Wolf offerings and normally we are always blown away. It might be because French food is not ground breaking and focuses on cream and sauces rather than seasoning but the whole exprience was just ok. We came during restaurant week hoping they would be putting their best foot forward and they did try. For a restaurant with their outdoor seating in a parking lot the area still felt cute and quaint. It was ok, there is definitely room for improvement but this was not the Petit Louis I remember. I believe PL to be a more premiere restaurant with a price tag to boot so my expectations are higher than a mid range restaurant. First, the service was a bit strange. We had a server come up and ask if we needed help with the wine/alcohol list, which we did but wanted a moment to discuss. He never came back, a waitress did and she apparently didn't know anything about wine. How can you work at a French restaurant and not know anything about wine? And what happened to the first guy? Second, our table was served cold bread and cold butter. As a French restaurant I know they know that salted butter can be served room temp, and to give us cold butter without warm bread, I think for the price rage of this place, that's a no no. Third, the food itself was just ok. I will give credit that my husband and I split a dish and they did split the plates for us which was very nice. 3 of us got steak frites and it was a nice portion. Unfortunately, all the steak was overcooked. We all ordered it medium rare and I would argue most were medium at best with one being almost medium well. I would've personally sent that one back but our friend ate it. The escargot was great. Our salad with brie had about 2 bites of brie on it. For dessert we had creme brulé which was pretty good. Overall it wasn't a great experience from the service to the food. I'd suggest an overhaul on training staff as well as some type of update on cooking steak because this just wasn't it. Absolutely the best French bistro I have ever been to. **I have been to a lot of them because my birthday is on the French holiday (Bastille Day), so every year we try a different one.** From the minute we walked in until the minute we left, we were treated like family and royalty. Thank you very much to the semonieller whose wine recommendedations were fantastic. Every detail of the dining room is absolute perfection. You can tell someone put a lot of love and a lot of French-savvy into making the atmosphere feel as authentic as possible. Even the bathroom feels like you're right back on the streets of Paris hopping into a cafe. I gobbled up the French Onion Soup before I even got a picture of it. We also tried the escargot and mussels, and they were extraordinary as well. Everyone at the table agreed that the duck was the best dish! None of us had any room to spare for the cheese course , but we will certainly be going back and grabbing it. Bonus: Easy free parking in the cutest of neighborhoods. I visited Petit Louis for Sunday brunch with a group of friends. We were warmly welcomed by a number of hosts and servers and sat down. The decor is reminiscent of a Parisian cafe and very fun. We started with some coffees and mimosas which were all very tasty. The bread service came out early and was okay -- the butter was quite hard and difficult to spread and the bread was fine. We ordered a few appetizers to share the chilled potato soup (excellent) and the aubergine with pesto and cheese (it has a more elegant French name that I'm ruining, but that's only because the dish was amazing and I couldn't focus on other details!) For my main entree I ordered the croque monsieur (pictured). This dish is hands down one of my favorite French foods but unfortunately I found the one at Petit Louis too heavy and rich and could barely eat half of what was on my plate. Another fabulous meal at Petit Louis. This time we went with another family, with our kids and there kids, and even though there isn't a kids menu here they really do well. The restaurant will make a simple pasta dish with butter and cheese (but no marinara sauce is available). The Croque Monsieur is essentially a super delicious grilled cheese sandwich with ham and the kids love that. The fries are spectacular and my kids actually love the muscles. Our friends' kids love the cucumber salad so that's another go to for the kiddos. On the adult side we started with the broccoli soup (amazing as are all their soups) and the eggplant napolean which is one of our all time favorite dishes. Then we tried the pepper steak special which was absolutely delicious. I could have eaten anything if it was served in that pepper sauce. The chicken for 2 is always a must and was just as spectacular as ever. Dipping those fries in the duck fat that the chicken is cooked in is heavenly, and the carrots, onions and garlic cloves that come with the chicken are to die for. This place proves, again and again, that it's one of Baltimore's best and we'll keep coming back, no doubt about it. read more

This place is a gem - every time I visit I am in awe of their great service and amazing food. There are limited parking spaces close to the door but there is free street parking nearby. I recommend always making a reservation especially if you are dining on the weekends or during peak hours. The service here is always on point, they are attentive and always make sure you have anything you need. The wine and liquor list is extensive and the food menu is all fresh ingredients. We got our staples: eggplant, snails, french onion soup, and steak. I promise you this is the best french onion soup you will ever have in your life.
