Each time we come to Le Cochen we love it. This time we came for happy hour (1/2 price glasses of wine and discounted appetizers). We sat on the patio, they have shaded or sun and lots of tables. I had the Chardonnay and it was really good! We had the smoked salmon appetizer and the potato skewers. I'm not a fan of salmon, but with the sauce they provide, it was doable. The potatoes were so good, crispy on the outside, but they explode into creaminess when you bite them. We didn't have them this time, but the calamari appetizer is my favorite! We were having such a good time, we decided to stay for dinner. I had the Coq au vin and loved it. I usually get the Beef bourguignon because that is also really good. Time was (in the not-too-distant past) you had to go downtown to have an upscale or off-the-beaten-path dinner. You know, when parking was less than a car payment? It took a number of years but enterprising restauranteurs laid claim to appropriate buildings and neighborhoods opening places where you could actually get something interesting to eat. Hell, even BERWYN has a fine-dining joint (or 2)! The "3rd Street" corridor in Batavia is prima facie evidence this crusade is thriving, as there are a BUNCH of great places on that Rue to stuff your face in style, (and drink accordingly.) We've been working our way down the street; as I have been in the mood for French, Le Cochon was high on the list. It was late afternoon when I and a foodie pal of mine visited. The rooms were at once light, open and airy, yet personal. The bar was adjacent and it looked heroically stocked. The waiter was personable and pleasant. The menu shouted "Bistro", and actually was sort of irritating, 'cos even after poring over it online before, everything looked so good I couldn't make up my mind! But rules are rules, and I have mine. When I go into a place for the first time, I always try to get the specialty of the house. As this is a "bistro" I finally swung with the Escargot and Steak Frites. Cliche'd, I know, but c'est le cuisine. My pal bucked tradition and went with a Burger. I should say here the house is known for a Pork Belly dish, but Belly of Pork (unless it's cured into Bacon) is a protein I will not eat. There's not much I won't stuff down my gullet, but Pork Belly is one. I just don't like that much fat. The good news? More for YOU! But I digress... The 'Scargots were classic in prep and top-notch in quality. As expected there was a lagniappe course in sopping pieces of the excellent baguette provided from the bread service in the garlicky butter remaining after munching the snails. It was a Hanger Steak wot arrived on my plate replete with an herb-y compound butter. I ordered the steak "Rare-Bleu", and it was the perfect temp, even with serious char marking. The steak was chunk-cut when served. I blessed the chef for seasoning the steak deftly. The Frites came with ketchup and aioli, they were great. There was nothing out of the ordinary about my pals burger, but he IS a knowledgeable foodie and reported it was delicious. Burgers are pretty easy to do, but to get one of championship quality takes skill. Notable were the two rashers of excellent, thick Bacon hanging over the sides of the sandwich. The chef here hit the mark! The Predominantly French WineList is dizzying expensive for bottles. My pal is an experienced oenophile and says the list shows care, but Oy! the prices! He's a very successful businessman, and even HE thought the prices were high. In contrast, the "per glass" prices were normal. LeCochon IS in a posh neighborhood, after all. I had a glass of Rhône blend which was hand-in-glove with my steak. Flavors outasite! Fine coffee and a classic Crème Brûlée for afters. I know somewhere behind the bar they prolly had a Calvados, which would have topped the meal off with a gold ribbon, but I was driving, and there are many miles between LeCochon and Stately Breakwind Manor. A wonderful feed, and a surprisingly good value considering the high quality. I'll bet that "light and airy" vibe turns quite romantic after dark; but know the tables are actually quite cozy together. Four and a half stars actually...A most relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable experience. A really nice looking outdoor venue - which made us try it - next time we'll be inside. Just stopped in for a quick drink mid day as we were between lunch and dinner time - but they still had some food options on their menu. We had such a friendly server (thanks Michael) who made us feel right at home as soon as we sat down. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and although we visited in the wintertime, their outdoor seating looks like a lot of fun during the summer. Have tried this place twice. The decor inside is nice, although it's kinda cold. The server was nice and kind. The food - didn't love it. I tried the charcuterie on two occasions - they have gotten rid of the prosciutto which I think was a mistake. They replaced it with some sort of cured ham which I didn't love. The crostini seemed huge and didn't love them either. I got a sandwich - monsier croquette? and didn't love it either. the bread seemed a little soggy, and the cheese was weirdly on top. Have not had this type of sandwich with cheese on top. The ham inside was not my favorite. The fries seemed a bit soggy. Overall not my fav restaurant in Geneva. read more

Very cozy spot with a good French menu. To be busy on a weeknight after 8pm in Geneva, you know they must be doing something right. We had French onion soup, salad lyonnaise, a burger (rare, thank you to the chef for doing it correctly!) and cassoulet. Having been to Lyon a year ago I've been craving some amazing French food for awhile. We went a few weeks back and really enjoyed our lunch so much. The ambiance gives authentic, and while the lunch menu was small - the taste of everything exceeded my expectations. I haven't eaten this much bread since i was in France (and the butter!!) Our server Katie was pleasant and in proper French fashion brought the food out at a very perfect pace so we could enjoy everything and take our time. Lunch Special (includes 3 dish - 1 appetizer, 1 main and 1 dessert) for $25 is a great deal. All the dishes we tried are tasty. My favorite is Pork Candy (highly recommend - amazing combo of perfectly cooked pork belly with fried leek and pickles) and Champignon Mushroom Sandwich, while my husband enjoyed his croque monsieur sandwich. The decor is very lovely, intimately, and it being in downtown Geneva, very quaint. I had dinner with a group of my girlfriends. It wasn't super busy so it wasn't loud or anything...maybe bcos we were the loud one HAHA the tuna nicoise was light and refreshing. Then tuna had a good sear to it. I felt like it was a little plain despite the sauce. The fritto was good though. I liked the fried artichoke. The sauce was good with it too. The pickled pepper and arugula really brightened up the heavy sauce and deep fried items. The bouillabaisse broth was super delight and well balanced in flavor. First, I'll preface by saying I dine out in the Geneva/St. Charles corridor five or six times a month. I'm very familiar with the restaurant scene here and have a clear sense of what to expect. My wife and I stopped in on Saturday with another couple for cocktails and small plates. First, the positives: the patio is very nice , and the redesigned interior looks great, with a handsome bar that fits the space nicely. Unfortunately, the experience beyond that fell short. Despite the restaurant being only half full at 6pm, it took about 10 minutes for our server to take our drink order and another 15 minutes before the drinks arrived. We ordered the large charcuterie board, which came out quickly but was a bit underwhelming. Normally we would have stayed for another round and maybe even dinner, but the slow service and very limited beer selection made us decide to move on. While I enjoy a good cocktail or glass of red wine, the beer list needs serious rethinking. For example, the Sam Smith English IPA may have history and hipster appeal, but it drinks like absolute dog water. Overall, great atmosphere but disappointing execution. If they refresh the beer list and tighten up service, I'd be open to giving it another try. read more

Had what the menu described as chicken ballotine - a boneless stuffed chicken roll. Had it once before and it was very good. What I was served this time were 2 small boney pieces of chicken that were difficult to eat and had very little. meat. The promised mushrooms were no where to be seen and the " mashed potato's " were not there. instead the boney chicken pieces were accompanied by 2 roasted small potatoes. False advertising! The profiteroles dessert was supposed to have chocolate sauce. Truely there was not more than 1/2 teaspoon of sauce dotted around. I had brought a guest and did not want to embarrass them by complaining so I said nothing. Won't Go back. It was a busy night and the accoustics in this place are not good. Food & Courses Starter: Fromage and Charcuterie Board Absolutely excellent -- the variety was top-tier. Our favorite cheese was the sheep's milk, creamy and distinct, and the pistachio pâté stood out among the meats. A perfect beginning. Salad: Pear and Beet Salad This was light and refreshing, with a nice blend of textures. The only minor note was that the beets were a bit heavy on the vinegar, but the dish overall was still very enjoyable. Small Plate: Brochette Skewers The sauce was delicious, though the meat's cook and tenderness were just okay. The only real downside was the small portion size, which left us wanting a bit more. Main Course: Beef Bourguignon A standout dish. While they were out of the mashed potatoes, the substitute potato side was excellent. The short rib was incredibly tender, and the rich sauce brought everything together beautifully. Dessert: Crème Brûlée Save room for dessert! This was absolutely superb -- not overly sweet, with a perfectly balanced custard and a crisp top. We'll come back just for this dessert! Don't do what I did - in the craziness of the holidays, I made a reservation for the wrong night. But the staff at Le Cochon, was so amazingly kind and considerate when we showed up. They somehow found a table for myself, my husband, and elderly parents on the Sunday before Christmas. It was our first time here and while I felt terrible for my mistake they were so gracious. And once seated, we were served by a very outgoing server and enjoyed wonderful food. The ambiance of this restaurant is lovely and we really had a memorable evening. We don't go out to eat much and I just can't express my gratitude for the accommodation they provided to allow us to enjoy a wonderful evening! WOW. I'm no connoisseur of French cuisine, but this has got to be one of the best from Aurora to Chicago. First off, it's a nice cozy location that's different and interesting. There's an outdoor patio that's quite nice, but we visited a few weeks ago when it was a little cooler out. It seemed like they had heaters out there. The inside however, is tight. There's not a ton of room between tables and the tables themself felt unnecessarily long - i.e. my wife and I felt kind of far apart and had to lean in to talk. That said, we started with some excellent drinks (albeit a bit overpriced). I got a French 75 and an old fashioned; my wife got an espresso martini. All of them were wonderful, though I especially liked the old fashioned. Now, let's talk food. To start we got the French onion soup - absolutely ridiculous. Hands down the best French onion soup I have ever had. For dinner, my wife got the steak frites which was spot on delicious and classic. The fries were excellent and the steak had great flavor and was cooked as requested. I got the pork belly stew ( I forget the actual name of the dish) - wow, wow, wow!! I've never had anything like this but it might be one of the best things I've eaten in my entire life - no exaggeration. The fatty rich pork belly was expertly cooked and crispy on the outside laid on a humble bed of beans. The fattiness of the pork was a perfect partner to the beans which brought some balance to the dish. Literally could not recommend this dish more. Lastly, the waitress was attentive and friendly. We had been wanting to try this restaurant and were pleasantly surprised that they had open tables on a Monday night. The dining room had a pleasant modern decor. Luckily for us, they have 1/2 price bottles of wine on Mondays. We ordered a bottle of Chateau St. Georges Bordeaux, and french onion soup as a starter. The wine and soup were excellent. I ordered the Coq au Vin and my husband got Beef Royale (very similar to Beef Bourguignon). We both enjoyed our entree's very much. We normally don't order dessert, but decided to get a Profiterole and Ice Cream. It was very good. The service was excellent, our waiter was friendly. We will definitely go back again. read more
