I was informed about 20 minutes after I ordered, but they were very apologetic and comped my soup that was supposed to come with the dinner. I came to the Walrus Room with my colleagues for dinner. We had a private space in the back and pre-selected menu. The service was awesome! We had a couple servers who were knowledgeable and attentive. For food, I got the Caesar side salad and lobster pasta. The lobster pasta was incredible!! We shared some apps too, the burrata and shrimp which were both delicious as well. The place was pretty crowded for a Tuesday night. Shorts, flip flops, and torn tee-shirts is the vibe - NOT fine dining. I felt extremely overdressed in a dress and heels. The decor inside is nice, but it still felt like a local bar rather than an upscale restaurant. There was no bread service which surprised me since I've been to several supper clubs, and that has always been a standard part of the meal. My beet salad was HUGE and good but nothing special. Talk about a hidden gem. My husband and I drove past The Walrus Room, not once, not twice, but three times before we were finally successful on our fourth try. It is in a strip mall on State Street between 4th Street and 5th Street. There is no signage that is visible from the street. Going through the stress of getting to the The Walrus Room is well worth it. This is a fabulous restaurant. Beware, the portions of all items are HUGE! I was surprised at the amount of food that we were given. We started with some appetizers for the table to share. We had the Chorizo Mussels (P.E.I mussels, white wine, garlic, shallots, French fries) and the steakhouse wedge salad (Iceberg, Danish blue cheese, Nueske's bacon). The mussels were perfectly cooked. The shells came apart easily and the chorizo sauce added some flavor to the dish without becoming too spicy. The wedge salad came with crispy iceberg lettuce and the bacon and blue cheese dressing added some great flavor. After the appetizers, I wasn't feeling super hungry. I ordered the Fried Perch Sandwich (lake perch, tempura batter, remoulade, kale slaw) because it looked like the smallest item on the menu. This also came with French fries. The flavor was really good. The perch was light and crispy and the toppings added a rich flavor to the sandwich. The fries were truffle parmesan flavored and did not need any sauce to add flavor. My husband had the half slab of baby back ribs off the supper club specials menu. This came with house salad, whipped potatoes & roasted vegetables. The ribs were overcooked and the barbecue sauce was not very flavorful. I don't know how he had room after the appetizers and entrees but our friend ordered a scoop of ice cream for dessert. As good a place as any for the area. Cool Alice in wonderland theme. Dark and chill vibes. Tried the arctic char and trout. Both very skillfully prepared. The arctic char had an excellent crust and was cooked perfectly. The trout was the standout for me. Great combination of crunch from the shaved almonds, acidity from the puree, garlic (well for garlic's sake). Drink was strong and well balanced. All around a solid no nonsense meal with zero pretense. Would definitely return. Service was good too. Not quite on par with the likes of the Mandrake but good. read more

I decided to take my wife to the Walrus Room for our 25th Wedding Anniversary dinner. Since my wife is a vegetarian I went there to make my reservation and spoke with Marshall. I wanted to make sure that he understood that she's a Lacto-ovo Vegetarian. He acknowledged and asked for her food preferences. I answered that she eats a lot of tofu and added, no pasta especially pasta primavera, which is usually what she's offered and then treated as an afterthought. He laughed and said chef will come up with something other than pasta primavera! On our anniversary we were seated in the side dining room, the tables are nicely spaced giving diners semi-private space with nice ambiance. The evening started off with a complementary champagne toast, much appreciated. Cocktails: French and Mock Turtle. Then Rob Roy and Dream Child. Appetizers: Asparagus and Shrimp DeJohgne Main: Roasted Cauliflower Steak w/Vegetable Hash. This dish was unexpected and exceeded expectations. My wife said it was delicious, I tasted it and it was excellent. Lake Erie Walleye with Whipped potatoes mushrooms, peas, beurre blanc. The fish was just a bit dry, but dish still had good flavor, plus my wife was happy with her meal which made me happy too. We realized that there wasn't an automatic bread service and we realized that we liked this because it left us room for dessert! I've been to many great top rated restaurants in Chicago. Everyone out in the western suburbs should cherish this place. I've also been to many restaurants out there and while they are good to great you should visit this place many times and keep it alive. I loved this place from the first time I was there for the fish and chips. Their special is cooked and delivered more meticulous and beautifully plated. And yes it is so delicious. I appreciate a restaurant that gives special attention to plating and perfect delivery of every dish. Tonight my friend and I had two appetizers, shrimp DeJong and whitefish with toasts. They were amazing! Then for a wedge salad which was truly magical and then for the main course. A New York strip steak with garlic butter and a 16 oz ribeye with garlic butter. These steaks were melt in your mouth delish and rival any Chicago steakhouse. As for sides we had delicious creamed spinach, grilled smoky asparagus and baked potato. A truly awesome meal . Guys, keep in mind that everything that they are charging here is 30% to 50% less than I pay in Chicago. A 16 oz ribeye at a steakhouse in Chicago is $65- $110 and their ribeye is $48. We started the evening with two Wisconsin Manhattans, would have had several more but we didn't have and designated drivers (yes, they were that good.) My wife and I have visited the Walrus Room many times over the past 3 years. I'm not sure what happened to the restaurant but the quality of food and attentive service has steadily declined over time. It was my wife's birthday and the only recognition she received was a happy birthday from the gentleman seating us. No other recognition from the wait staff. I was not expecting a chorus line to emerge from the kitchen but a birthday greeting from our server would have been appreciated. The food was disappointing. The mussels were microscopic and we both had several empty shells. I would think checking for empty shells would be something an experienced chef or server would do. The chicken was very overcooked and the jerk Mahi Mahi was pan cooked without any jerk dry rub or grilling. It was a nicely cooked piece of fish but it wasn't done in a jerk preparation. Most restaurants of this caliber would offer the birthday guest some dessert. We received nothing from the server. We left there and went for dessert elsewhere. I hope the owner can address some of these issues. I can't imagine we're the only dinners with a bad experience. read more

Affordable fine dining in a casual setting with friendly service, I had a delightful visit here with my party and left very full! I love the wide variety of different options on their menus here which cover a wide variety of cuisines, ingredients, and different price points. It's not obvious from the way that the items are listed on the menu, but every appetizer, side, and entree was a very generous portion size. This is fortunately as everything I tried was delicious! In particular, a few items stood out from my visit here. The chorizo mussels were cooked to perfection, juicy and flavorful from the chorizo with a good balance between salt, fat, and acid. The truffle parmesean fries were lightly crisp with a good burst of extra earthy flavor from the truffle oil. The wedge salad was a full meal in itself, presented nicely with cuts of cucumber and tomatoes, balanced with generous cuts of bacon, and tied together with an amazingly flavorful and creamy blue cheese dressing. The fried perch sandwich had a deliciously crispy and flavorful tempura batter which matched very well with the creamy remoulade and fluffy fun. I also enjoyed the flavor of the roasted vegetables which had a good umami to them, while not being overcooked. One of the biggest surprises of the evening was the roast amish chicken which retained an incredible amount of juiciness due to being cooked sous vide, while having a deliciously marinated skin that was intense but not overly salty. Overall, well executed food that is really elevated versions of familiar favorites and served in generous portions. I'm excited to visit here for another delicious meal soon. read more

Came here with a group of friends for a later reservation time and the place was packed - reservations highly recommended! Our waitress was attentive and helpful, she gave great recommendations and offered insight on items we were considering. Eight of us had dinner here 9/14/24. Tricky location to navigate. Very noisy inside. Menu is interesting but really disappointed that the prime rib was drowning in wine sauce. (Way too much salt in the mashed potatoes. ) Martinis served in a champagne glass ? Why is there no bread on the table? I picked up the tab for this dinner - $700.00+tip. Loved the crème brûlée but most likely will not be back. They do not acknowledge any birthdays. ( if you are going to offer a certain cocktail, I suggest you make sure you have ALL the ingredients required so you don't have to advise your guest they will have to make another selection.) We requested a table in the main dining room but were told its the bar or nothing (we had a reservation). Out of the 5 of us, they were out of the food that 3 of us ordered. When the food came it was missing items (i.e. my dish was supposed to come with rice) but they forgot the rice and then by the time they did bring it on the side I was already done with my tiny tiny piece of fish. the burrata appetizer was not cheese. But perhaps the biggest disappointment was seeing one of the workers long hair going onto the clean plates as she set up a table. The waitress also told us there was no soup, but about 1o minutes later a different server serving table next to us told their guests all about the soup that was available. Walrus Room is a solid five star restaurant. Table service is fantastic. Our server knew the menu inside and out, provided useful recommendations and was very attentive without being pesty. Starting with the appetizers four of us had Shrimp DeJohgne, the Burrata, Curds and Chorizo Mussels. All very very good. The ladies had wine and I had a bourbon from their extensive list. For dinner we ordered the walleye on rice, Amish roast chicken and the prime steak frites. All really good although maybe the entrees were a bit salty. We ordered too much food and drink so the nearly five hundred dollar bill was our fault. Great service, fantastic atmosphere. I'll definitely be back. read more

Wife and I stopped in here for our anniversary. To be entirely honest, it wasn't our first choice. The other places were loud and very busy, so we took a chance. This was absolutely fantastic. The service was excellent. Friendly without being overbearing. Timely about everything - never too slow and never too fast, and never in your face. The food was impeccable. I had steak frites and my wife had walleye. It was simply perfect. AND THE DRINKS! Oh my god these were fantastic cocktails. We are absolutely coming back. Though the sauce had good flavor, the single small piece of toast accompaniment was chewy and overly saturated with butter. The prime rib was enormous but was 75% fat which made for a very unappetizing presentation. It was cooked accurately but just wasn't very good especially given the $59 cost. The roasted vegetables side was fine but nothing special, the mashed potatoes were good. Given the other available options in Geneva, we won't be returning. read more

The absolute perfect date night! Great drinks, good beer selection, and the White Sangria was delicious. Food was outstanding, one of the best steak filets in the area. Service was wonderful, didn't catch our server's name but she had blonde hair and we were talking about her grandchildren. So personable! Walrus Room is definitely my new favorite restaurant here in Geneva. The food is consistently delicious, the perch meal with choice of salad and accompanied by mashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and broccolini was really just awesome. The whole menu is great and my server was extremely pleasant, knowledgeable and able to make excellent recommendations. Their service is always good. Our server was amazing, she was very attentive and checked up on us at all the right times! She promoted the menu and specials well and gave us new plates and silverware after each course.
