Strike one - Le Peep is a chain. Strike two - Average age of patrons is 95 (this might be a ball, rather than a strike.) Strike three - food was average. Homerun - No real breakfast competition in the area, so they are as good as they have to be to score. I ordered the Colorado - An egg white omelet filed with lean smoked turkey, avocado, diced tomatoes and bacon finished off with melted mozzarella cheese. I subbed out the bacon with corned beef hash, because I usually feel that everything is better with corned beef hash (Life lesson #8275287 by Danny). I was correct this time as well. The omelet was good and filled with ingredients, but I wasn't blown away. It came with toast and hashbrowns. Both were tasty, but typically difficult to mess up. Le Peep gets out a consistent breakfast and HUGE portions, although the price reflect those portions (8.95 for my omelet, not bad, but not great). My friend got the pancakes and thought they were good and fluffy, which they did look fluffy. For all my Wildcats, you get a 10% discount. read more

Le Peep is what I would call good. Not excellent, not bad by any means, but just good. First off I went there on a very cold morning and there is no waiting area and there was a HUGE crowd of people. The front was poorly designed with the cash register right where everyone is huddled together to wait for a table. The food was very good, but even splitting it was too much. This is my major problem with brunch places. The food is awesome but not re-heatable quality (except for potatoes) but I feel guilty not taking it home and attempting to eat my eggs (ewww) the next day. The banana walnut pancakes were awesome though. I love anything with banana flavoring in them, but it's even butter with slices of banana in it! The major disappointment was my coffee drink. I got a mocha of some kind that was sickening sweet, and I know that mocha's are not meant to taste. Putting "Le" in front of everything doesn't make it French. I had a massive craving for pancakes on a Sunday morning. Not just any day or any time, Sunday morning. I knew that any restaurant serving breakfast will be busy, but I decided to go out anyway. I wanted to check out the Bait Shop, but my boyfriend and I passed by Le Peep "Pancake House". I couldn't resist the cuteness of the name Le Peep. The wait was about 15 minutes, which isn't that bad. It helps to check out the menu during the wait, especially if you expect the service to be slow... which it was at Le Peep. Nothing to really rant about though. Unfortunately, I did NOT get pancakes. Pancakes start at $4.99 for a stack. I decided to pass on them because they did not come with -anything-. No sides. Yeah, I can't eat pancakes alone and the cost of sides add up to more than a standard breakfast entree. So, I ordered the Harvest Benedict. The accompanying Mom's Sassy Apples is nothing but apple pie filling served cold. The Peasant Potatoes were simply home-fried potatoes with light seasoning. It was a decent dish over all. C had two eggs, toast and homefries... er, Peasant Potatoes. They served Texas style toast if you're into that. Nothing special about his order. Breakfast at Le Peep was an okay experience. The prices are moderate and the food is standard. There aren't many vegetarian-friendly dishes, but you would expect that at a French-sounding American restaurant. read more

This is a nice place for breakfast. We were quickly seated despite coming on a sunny, crowded Saturday. We had chocolate chip pancakes and one of their breakfast mixes that included their delicious potatoes. We quite enjoyed the food, and our fresh orange juice. I personally hate flavored coffee and was a bit unhappy that their regular coffee tasted unnatural, but my company didn't mind. Yeah, I know its a chain, and there's nothing terribly special about this place, but its reasonably priced, tastes good, and I've always had good service. Oh, and you can request different types of coffee. We tried the dark roast last time, it was great. They also have this punch card deal. Every time you buy an entree you get a punch on your card, after your 6th punch, your next entree is free. Same thing for coffee, but I forget the number of punches you need for those. Came here for breakfast/brunch and had to utilize that 99 cent coupon that they mail me - where you purchase one entree and get one for only 99 cents! What a great deal! Service was good - we were told that there was a 20 minute wait so after 15 minutes, we were seated and as soon as we had ordered our food, we only waited about 10 minutes before being served our food. I got the White Lightening which is an egg whites omelette with chicken, onions, green onions, salsa, and avocado. Totally yum and felt very healthy while I scarfed the whole thing. Their omelettes and skillets are both really good. The french toast is another fav. I'd recommend getting those instead of anything else on the menu. Ok, perhaps I'm a *touch* biased because I worked here several years ago; however, it was literally for three months before the school year ended, and there are a ton of servers who never met me yet still provide excellent service. I've never once been disappointed with the staff - they're sweet and attentive, even when the place is packed. You might be tempted to pass this place by on the weekends based on the wait, but it's really not as bad as it appears. Even when the lobby is totally full, I maybe wait 15 minutes for a table, and it's never taken more than 10 minutes between ordering and receiving my food. From my experience as an employee, their kitchen is a well-oiled machine, and there's a real teamwork atmosphere. I've always had the impression that people are happy to work there, considering how many of them have been there for at least the seven years that I've lived in the Evanston-Chicago area. Now, to the food: I greatly prefer their breakfast options over Clarke's. Their blueberry pancakes are far and away my favorite selection, fluffy and chock full of blueberry goodness! I also love their skillets, but I must admit that I'm more of a hash browns girl, and the Peasant Potatoes aren't quite my style. I haven't tried most of their lunch menu, so I can't very well comment on it. Oh, and I echo what others have said about the chicken fried steak: If you really feel like clogging your arteries, this is hands-down the dish to try. You won't be disappointed. With all of the wonderful brunch options in my current neighborhood, I won't make a special trip here. But when I find myself in Evanston with a hankering for blueberry pancakes or a skillet that keeps me full all day, Peep is first on my list. read more

Not bad. Not bad. I'm erring on the side of four stars because it's nothing special, but it's a great place to stop for brunch if you're in the area. I was fortunate enough to have great company, and I think both enjoyed their first venture into this restaurant. Not the healthiest place I've been to, but they have some "lighter" items, namely found in the omelet section. Oh, and the omelets are GREAT. Not too runny, just fluffy enough. Maybe I'm crazy for not liking omelets cooked and THEN stuffed with ingredients, but so be it. All of the ingredients are cooked INTO the omelet, so you taste everything in each bite. Nice. I got an omelet with avocado, bacon, and smoked turkey, and the avocado added to the texture very nicely. The potatoes were forgettable, so I didn't really eat too many. The English muffin comes to you already buttered because how could ANYONE not butter everything they eat? Interesting (slash tasty...oops). My sister and her family which include 4 of the seven children, 3 of which are triplets. Lolo and MamaMarita -seniors also looking for the prime parking spot on this hot October day. The scene: 4 tables pushed together with 5 highchairs, 1 booster and chairs placed just so there were enough kids to flank each adult. Food everywhere, on the table, off the plate on the floor in the creamer bowl and on messy faces. The heroine: Elizabeth is her name. She plays the part of the courageous waitress who was quick and thorough, taking the drink and kids orders together. Keeping the tables well stocked with crayons to use with kids menu/place mats, extra napkins, and extra spoons and plates. Three stars overall, while waiting for a table I found the women's bathroom needed to be cleaned and only one toilet was in order. I alerted the staff, but by the time we were done and paid for our meal the bathroom was still in the same condition. The food was good in my book. I would go back for the sausage links. The kids meal cheeseburger was enormous and came with waffle fries. The chicken finger meal comes with waffle fries and fresh fruit. Service was great and I would come back. Knowing that these people can handle our crowd is always an A+. I was surprised they had enough high chairs for our crowd and many other kiddies in the restaurant. Wowza, is their brunch good! Brunch is my favorite at Le Peep! It's a little pricey so it's always a treat to go, but when I do it's phenominal! Even when it's packed, I've never waited more than 10 minutes for a table. The wait staff is always really great -- the service is always 5 stars. I have gotten countless items on the menu and have never ever been disappointed. I've only ever eaten breakfast here so I can only vouch for that, but it's really great. The orange juice is fresh squeezed and delicious. The pancakes are warm and fluffy. And the eggs benedict are my faaaaaaaaavorite! And I'm no longer a college kid and I still go back. That was great cuz dumbass me dropped some eggs in my cup of water but then I was able to just grab another cup and get some more lemon water immediately! awww yeah anyways, I go here to eat my goodbye breakfasts with my friend JJ and this is the 2nd annual breakfast we did before winter break so that means this place is traditional! Even though I gave it three stars, I'm thinkin', "Meh." My friend and I dined there on a Sunday morning around 10 AM and it was really busy and super crowded. My friend got there before I did and they sat her even though she told them I wasn't there yet and then the waitress gave her the stink eye for 10 minutes while she waited for me to show. When I finally did show, I told the children that were hosting at the front desk my friend was already seated and the girl said, "Okay. Go ahead and find her and waved me off." I said, "I've never been here before. She said she's in the back of the restaurant." Again the very young girl said, "Oh, just walk back there." and again waved me off. Rude. Since I had not seen my friend for over 2 years, we had a lot of catching up to do and we soon realized this was not going to be the place for that. They were very clear by their actions that this was a "Eat and get out" sort of place. They wanted that table and they wanted the turnaround. Rude. After the second time the waitress had to come back because we hadn't looked at the menu yet (since we were talking), she seemed pretty annoyed. Next time we gave her our order and it came out in like a ridiculously short amount of time. The food was ...well, meh. I ordered "stuffed" French toast which was not stuffed with anything but had some sort of drippy ricotta cheese sauce between two pieces of French toast. I didn't finish it. I also noticed my friend did not finish her meal either (something with salsa and eggs). The waitress came to check on us once and the second time she just dumped our check and left. Then she did come back - to take our plates. We decided we should just leave and not spend anymore time there. I will try this location again to see if the service is better in a non-rush hour situation. This place has underwhelming food and an ambiance that leaves a lot to be desired. My first impression upon entering Le Peep is that it is in dire need of a makeover. The walls need painting, the carpet is disgusting and needs to be replaced and the ceiling tiles are water stained and mismatched. It's clear that nothing substantial has been done to up-date and thoroughly clean this place in a long time. And if the customer area is dirty, I can only imagine what the conditions are in the kitchen. As for the food, it was ok. I had an egg white omlette that was fine. The potatoes were clearly taken out of a bag, heated (luke warm) and thrown on my plate. Perhaps the only thing that makes up for any of this is the fact that my service was fine. We were looking for a breakfast alternative to the hotel we were staying at and happened upon Le Peep. We loved this place so much that we ate breakfast here every day during our visit to Evanston! The menu was very varied and we ordered something different every day, and every single breakfast was excellent. Tea and coffee came in large individual pots, tea came with honey, and maple syrup was warmed up! Service was excellent and staff was efficient and friendly. I especially liked the granola blueberry pancakes and hubby loved his omelets. Prices were reasonable. We were also happy to be supporting a local business instead of a hotel chain! read more

It's close to campus, it's advertised in newspapers, they give a student and other various discounts... but their service is slow, their food is mediocre and they're generally overpriced. The Wanderer skillet is divine, as is the spinach and bacon omelet (whoever thought of putting cream cheese with eggs is a genius!!!) This is one of those fabulous places that puts the carafe of coffee on the table (perfect for caffeine addicts such as myself who are looking to get totally wired on a Sunday!) and has regular coffee as well as an assortment of flavors (mmm, Butter Rum!!!) When I was spending time in this area, this was the place to go for breakfast. Spinnaker omelette. I tried this the first time I went, and I never even tried anything else because I fell in love with this omelette. This is the only omelette that can rival a gyro omelette, in my humble opinion. It has spinach, mushrooms, bacon, and cream cheese. Right there you already have two of my favorite things bacon + cream cheese. Cream cheese makes everything better. And bacon kinda does too. Having spinach still makes you feel like you made a healthy choice, even though you really didn't at all. Gotta love good rationalization. I know they have a ton of other great things for breakfast cuz it was always packed, even on weekdays. There might be a wait, but it will be worth it. I came here for the first time today. This place is easily accessible by train and is open early in the morning until 2:30PM. The place has a very country decor, which is very cute. It does not have comfortable booths, instead it has tables and chairs. I had their wheat pancakes which are good, but they are very plain. I asked for some fresh fruit on them, and I also got a fresh squeezed orange juice. The orange juice was very fresh and good, and so was the fruit on the pancakes. What I didn't like about this place was that the bill was $28 for 2 people. For 2 wheat pancakes (each), OJ, and some coffee. Uhm...very expensive for what we got. Also, the waitress seemed annoyed/bothered for some reason, she was just plain rude. When you come in, nobody tells you that there is a line for people to pay, and a line for people to be seated, so it's disorganized. The only reason this place got 4 stars instead of a mere 2 is because they do have some healthier selections in their menu. This is always a weekend brunch staple for the Evanston crowd. I'm usually good with the food here. However, today I decided to order a smoothie. At $3.45, you'd except either something large or something exceptionally delicious, but I got neither. I got a small glass of blended fruits that tasted like something I could have made at home by myself. The best thing about Le Peep is the fact that they always publish coupons for "Buy 1 entree, get the 2nd for 99 cents." This is a great reason to keep going back. They also have a Le Peep card which gets you a free entree after order 6 entrees. That alone is the biggest motivation for me to go back. read more

If you live or work in Evanston, get in on the punch club - Monday is double-punch day and after ten punches you get a meal free (when another one is purchased, of course.) The Sir Benedict Omelet is the best thing on the menu. I love going for lunch because you can have a breakfast item or a lunch item. They also bring a whole carafe of coffee to the table for you, in addition to a carafe of lemon-slice garnished water, so you can pour your own. I like a place that offers me that kind of control. The drawback? What my brother calls "Kindergarten Chairs" that are shaky and about 15% smaller than the average chair. read more

I was here a long time ago when I was just a wee one, and couldn't remember too much about it whatsoever other than the way the restaurant looked and that I went with my best friend and her mom. THIS time I went with my boyfriend and we were interested in a cozy breakfast. From the 'Pampered Eggs' section I got 'Roma' which is: Eggs scrambled up with cream cheese, spinach, roasted tomatoes and artichokes nestled in a casserole. Very scrumptious. And filling. To drink I opted for Pineapple/Orange Juice, but they have an option for you to create your own concoction, which I think is sweet. The restaurant itself needs more booths damn it! Booths are just so crucial to a breakfast establishment! I wish our waiter was a tad more attentive, but aside from those (and the first one is more a dreamy wish) comments, no complaints! First impressions are important to me. When I walk into a resturaunt I expect to be greeted by someone yet there was no one at the hostess desk and there was a line forming up front. The guy finally took us back to be seated and he gave us the worst seat with a nice noisy view of the kitchen, I asked him if we could be seated away from the kitchen and he took us across the aisle right next to the kitchen doorway, I asked him once again if we could be moved and this time I choice the table. Came in 12:30p on Sunday and a 10 min wait, not bad. I liked that they added some creativity to the brunch menu. I ordered the Stuffed French toast which was filled with vanilla ricotta, cream cheese, and zest of orange/lemon. I don't have much of a sweet tooth, so I can't handle exorbitant amounts of sweets and get easily bored. This dish was not overly sweet and the hint of citrus flavors kept me interested with each bite. I also sampled the Gooey Buns and Belgian Waffle Combo. The Gooey Buns were 2 halves of English muffin topped with brown sugar, cinnamon and almonds @ $3.69. I give it creativity points and thought it tasted fine, but would I order it again? prob not. Call me old fashioned but I still prefer plain toasted w/ butter over these English cinnamuffins. As for the waffles, it didn't really have the crispness that I prefer and the batter was nothing that wowed me. I don't do brunch much, but I still haven't found a great place for pancakes and waffles in Chicago (that's including Ann Sather). The bacon was crisp and potatoes were fine. As for coffee, I ordered the Cinnamon Roll Latte, but I didn't taste even a trace of cinnamon. I was really convinced they messed up my order and gave me a regular latte. So I asked my waiter if he could just give me another small sample so I could do something like the Blindfolded Pepsi taste challenge. He was nice enough to give me a whole new one, and yes there was a big difference. It was a lot smoother and it tasted like what the name implied. Overall it was decent exp. I would recommend the stuffed french toast, but the waffles is something I wouldn't order from here again. The waiter was courteous, but we prob got less attention because we were seated outside. I really enjoy eating breakfast at Le Peep. Because I often order the Spinnaker, I feel like it's my healthy breakfast option (egg white omelet with spinach). It tastes so good, I don't even notice that it's kind of healthy! The coffee is somewhat expensive, but worth it if you drink a lot. They set the pot right on your table so you never have to wait for refills. Because the food always come out so quickly, I like to order coffee first, then order the breakfast once the coffee arrives. That way, I feel like I'm getting my money's worth out of the pot of coffee. Call me cheap, it's okay. Fast service, good food, an relatively inexpensive! The flavor and everything is really good but I just felt so full afterwards. The egg should be cooked a little more so the outer layer is a little thicker. This is a very good brunch establishment. The serving sizes are tremendous averaging 11-12 dollars per entree. My goto is their hen pen which consists of hash-browns (replacing their potatoes), corn-beef hash, and eggs/toast. My main compliment is to service which always kept in check with me and properly adjusted my orders (if I wanted) to instruction - properly being exactly. Their chocolate chip pancakes are also excellent; my favorite part of the pancakes is what seems to be a slight sugar crust that plays for great texture and taste. Furthermore the large helping size is also a major plus. Lastly, their rock lobster scramble eggs are a must-try, mainly because it's a cheap-for-price lobster deal, generous in serving, and has great taste and homely aesthetic.
