Because of the pandemic, my wife and I had not been there in a long time. We just recently went back. The owner is the chef. The server is a delightful French woman who has been there a long time. They have a limited menu. However, what they serve is superb!. I have been to France many times. Sitting in this restaurant makes me feel as if I was on a street in Paris. The chef/owner takes great pride in what he offers. I had a chance to see him in the kitchen. It was like watching an artist at work. The concentration as he tasted his creations was intense. My girlfriend and I came to this restaurant for dinner on Valentine's Day night in 2023. I made a reservation for 8pm two weeks in advance and called once more to confirm the location. This restaurant is a very small bistro with not many seats and the entrance reception is in the lobby. We walked to the reception desk and waited for a long time. There were three waitresses and one male waiter who saw us waiting at the door, but no one greeted us. After being ignored for about five minutes, I stopped the male attendant and was able to get a seat. Interestingly, when I sat down, we found several pairs of white diners who were greeted as soon as they entered, without any wait. After sitting down, I noticed that the table was dirty, with lots of bread crumbs and dust, and I offered the two waitresses, one after the other, that the tablecloth was dirty and to wipe it for us. No one paid any attention to us. One of the waitresses served the bread without saying a word and left without looking back. After that, I asked one of the waitresses that we needed some extra napkins, and after she agreed, we waited for a long time and no one came back to give us napkins. So I had to walk to the counter myself and ask them for paper. Then a waitress served us cutlery and bread. After eating the bread, I noticed that the steak knife I was served was dirty and had a lot of stains on it which was very sticky. So I asked for a new steak knife, and a waitress (who seemed to be the manager) came over to help me change the knife. I complained to this manageress about my experience and she rudely interrupted me without listening and said to change our tablecloth even though it was not what I asked for. After they took away our tablecloths, they threw two large white sheets of paper randomly on our table as tablecloths. Meanwhile, all the other tables had normal tablecloths on them. We felt offended and voiced our displeasure, so the manageress told us to switch to another table. When we got to the other table and we were eating, we found out that we were not provided with forks, so we had to ask them for forks again. Food wise, they only have four choices on the menu for Valentine's Day, appetizers and desserts are fixed, and there are four choices of beef, lamb, fish and duck for the main course, with prices ranging from $105 to $125. But their food is not at all worthy of the price. The pre-dinner bread was hard and didn't have much flavor. There was no choice for the appetizer, which was a small bowl of lobster bisque with some salad. The lobster bisque was salty and didn't have any lobster meat in it, just a bowl of brine. The salad had a simple oil and vinegar dressing and looked like it was bought from costco and thrown on the plate. For the main course, the steak was okay, the medium rare we ordered was cooked right, and the side dishes were okay. The steak was about the $35-$45 level of the outside restaurants. My duck was very old and not much seasoning. It tasted like the $20 roast duck meat at a Chinese restaurant. There were two choices for dessert, apple pie and cheesecake. The apple pie was about the level of any apple pie you can get in any American supermarket. The cheesecake was also awful and not much different from the supermarket. When my girlfriend was halfway through the cheesecake, she put her fork down and found a big soft black mold on the bottom of the cheesecake. We shone a flashlight and took a lot of pictures as evidence after confirming that it was mold. I raised my hand to the waiter and he came over and I said there were obvious black mold spots on the bottom of the cake. He brought the cake into the back kitchen and luckily we took pictures as evidence. Here comes the climax. After five minutes, a tall chef came out of the back kitchen with a chef's uniform full of stains, or aged stains. The chef was furious and told me that it was grilled pecan, and I said that grilled pecan couldn't be that color, it should be hard coffee colored particles. I cook and bake a lot myself, there is no way I can't tell the difference between grilled pecan and mold. He suddenly disliked me with particular anger, saying that he had been making cakes for forty-five years and could make them with his eyes closed. His exact words: "You are wrong. I am right. You are wrong. I am always right. The most outrageous thing is that he very, very proudly said: "You should be grateful that I serve you tonight". I was shocked, how he had the face to say such words, he repeated two or three more times. After that, he said that other cake slice also had this on it. I said, "Then show me the ingredients, or find another cake with the same black spots. He stopped talking and went into the kitchen. After that I found the male waiter, who seemed to be the owner or manager or something, because I saw him taking a glass and pouring a glass of wine for himself while serving. My husband and I live nearby (lucky enough to be in walking distance) and have enjoyed the hidden gem that is Le Petit Bistro for some time now. The food is delicious, the ambiance warm and friendly, and the chef/owner and his wife go above and beyond to always welcome us and make our dining experience an excellent one. I am by no means an expert in French cuisine, but I definitely appreciate good food, and you can tell that the food is cooked with love, authenticity, and a meticulous attention to detail to make sure that every bite is fantastic. From the freshly baked bread to the amazing desserts worth every calorie, I have never had a bad dish here. The prices are very reasonable too, especially given how good the food is. Recently, we stopped by early one windy night when the power was out in Mountain View. The restaurant began filling up with other customers, many regulars, and we all had a delectable and memorable meal dining by candlelight. A par for course French restaurant. Ambience was homey and more of a "cottage" feel. Family run and it felt like it. The staff were nice, albeit quite slow - it took them about 5 minutes while we stood at the front waiting for somebody to come over and seat us for our reservation we had. We ordered a lobster bisque and Caesar salad to start. Both were better than expected. The bisque was creamy but light - quite a few chunks of lobster in there too. Great with the bread to dip. The salad was fairly small for the price. I expected something I could share a bit more, but it was more personal sized. For mains, my girlfriend had the scallops with cheese sauce on it with beans and potatoes on the side. The cheese was soooooo good. And the scallops were large and delicate. Just how it's made. I had the filet mignon and it was just so soft and tender. It cut so easily and gushed with juice. Definitely the best thing on their menu I think - there's a hard line to beat on that steak and I'm glad I had it. On the downside, all the sides on our plates were bland and had no creativity or ingenuity in them. My steak was great, but the potatoes, beans, and carrots had no flavor. I mean, could you just add some salt and pepper?? It's sad to say, but the delicious main dishes are just marred by the poor plating and lack of flavor in the sides. A side dish should accentuate the flavors of the main, or produce synergy so you keep eating and having fun. Stopped by for dinner on a week night, parking is very limited in the back. Surprisingly only 2 tables were occupied although many of the parking spots were taken. Very old fashioned inside, service was attentive and prompt by the two servers. They have a photo of their specials on a tablet, which was kind of cute. Shared the salad verte a la dijonaise and appreciated that they put it on two small plates, separating all the veggies. Their bread with the aioli is so so good. Their sauvignon blanc they had was not to my liking, but I finished it anyways. None of their entrees were really calling me so I went with the vegetarian item, feuillete de legumes au four. It was a puff pastry with brie cheese and veggies like portabello, artichoke hearts, spinach, etc. It came with a side of potatoes and carrots too. Overall it was okay. The veggies made it quite mushy and it was really lacking in flavor. For dessert we had the chocolate mousse and it was so incredibly grainy. Not good. We told the waitress as well. The pepper steaks were the hit of the meal, cooked perfectly and the sauce was amazing, The fish special was also a favorite. The dining room is almost immediate upon entry, with a wood partition separating the door from the dining room, which was cozy, warmly lit (good, romantic lighting without the danger of candle lit tables) They provide a warm basket of bread with garlic aioli after ordering, which was very good bread, crispy on the outside, tender inside. We had: escargot (5/5), perfectly cooked, tender, topped with garlic pesto sauce Pate de foie (4/5), smooth texture, delicate flavored pate was a good portion & served with warm crostini Mussels in white wine, garlic & cream (5/5), perfectly cooked, tender mussels, flavored nicely. I used the bread to dip in the flavorful sauce. Coq au vin (4.5/5) - I had this as my entrée, classic preparation, done nicely with a red wine reduction. Duck au l'orange (5/5) - my bf had this entree & shared some with me & I almost preferred his entree over my coq au vin. My friends had the pork medallion & duck au l'orange & shared bites with me. My favorite was the duck au l'orange. The entrées are served with a small portion of vegetables (haricots vert & carrots) and potatoes. Entrees are a good size but not huge so you won't be overstuffed & will have room for dessert. Desserts: we shared tiramisu (5/5), served in a glass, fluffy & light but not too sweet; Tarte tatin (4/5), served warm with fresh whipped cream; Chocolate mousse (3/5) - very rich & a definite must try if you love chocolate. Came by for dinner after Le Petit Bistro is 4 stars on Yelp once again! Made a same day reservation mid-day for the same evening and there were ample tables upon arrival. Started off with complimentary bread with Aioli. Bread was slightly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The Aioli was fragrant and flavorful. Moved on to the Lobster Bisque and the soup was filled with half a dozen pieces of Langostino shrimp. The bisque was good, but the Nordstrom Cafe Crab Bisque is even better. The Coq au vin main dish was good. The two pieces of chicken thighs were well marinated and flavorful. Due to the marinade, there was a slightly wine aftertaste to the chicken. I've had fresher chicken thighs... The mashed potatoes were made from real potatoes and the side of carrots were sweet, in a fresh way. The filet mignon au poivre was tender and flavorful. The sea scallops were good too. Scallops were fresh the cream sauce wasn't too overwhelming. For dessert, the creme brulee was okay. I've had better. The mousse au chocolat was also mediocre. Paesano's in downtown San Jose has the best Chocolate mousse. Le Petit Bistro's version was too watery. The fresh fruit crepe was good, probably the highlight of all the desserts. Small, dimly-lit French restaurant with an intimate atmosphere. It's REALLY quiet in here, almost to the point where you feel a little awkward talking at a normal level... Food: - Lobster bisque - Lobster reduction with lobster pieces. We saw many other people in the restaurant ordering this, so we thought it would be good. We were wrong. It was nothing special. The soup was a little spicy, and there weren't very many lobster pieces in the bisque. - Filet of Sole with Vegetables and Rice - One of the specials for the night (presented on an iPad). They gave a large portion of fish, which was soft, but the sauce didn't really stand out. Vegetables included some cucumber slivers, carrots, green beans, and squash. There was an incredibly small amount of rice on my plate. - Tarte Tatin - Caramelized apple pie with whipped cream. This was not good at all. It did not come out warm and tasted like they got it out of a box from the market's freezer aisle. For $7.00 this was not worth it at all! Overall, I probably wouldn't return here. Prices are steep for the food you receive, and the menu, in general, is pretty limited. Also, the food lacked in quality. This is probably one of the lamest French bistros I have ever been to & have eaten lots of French food in my life. While the muscles were well cocked, the sauce lacked taste or flavor. Next, my duck leg looked like it came out of a TJs frozen meal... with accompanying floppy veggies. My friend's clam chowder that's not really clam chowder had all kinds of funny tastes to it & in my opinion was not eatable. The atmosphere also lacks warmth... literally and figuratively, while the staff was friendly & attentive. Went to look on their website & it was the most truth in advertising I've seen in a while.... A few weeks ago, we had a corporate partnership development dinner at Le Petit Bistro for 9 folks. The entire experience from beginning to end was such a pleasure. Filled out their reservation form online for a specific date, time, and party size. Next business day I received a call from Jean to confirm my reservation. Additionally because it was a larger party size, she suggested using the prix fixe menu (one appetizer, one entree, one dessert from about 6-8 choices). For an additional $10 we could include lamb and filet mignon on the menu options. We decided to go with both suggestions. In order to make a large-party reservation, we had to pay $200 deposit 1 business day before our event. She also let me confirm my final party size 1 business day before as well. Day of, Jean greeted our party with such warmth and joy. We sat down on one side of the little restaurant (we took up about 1/2 the place, so it was semi-private) and immediately the incredibly attentive staff had all our water glasses filled and menus handed to us. She also passed us an iPad so we could see photos of the menu items, which was a huge (and mouth-watering) help to narrow down our choices. In the meantime, we were given a basket of warm freshly baked french baguette slices with the most incredible spread (some kind of savory orange colored butter spread, no idea what it is, but so good), and ordered a bottles of red and white wine. Jean's recommendation for the wines were excellent. The food is beautifully presented, dishes spotless, and delicious. The food was cooked to perfection, everyone agreed it was phenomenal. Throughout the entire meal, our plates were immediately cleared once we were finished eating a course, our glasses filled with water, and next course arrived only a few minutes after the last one. Perhaps the thing made me appreciate and adore this establishment aside from all the already superb traits is that the restaurant closes at 9pm. However our group lost track of time, and before we knew it, it was 9:45pm! Not once did Jean or staff give us any indication that they were closed, and when we profusely apologized to the staff, Jean smiled and said she wanted to make sure we had time together since it looked like we were having great conversation and time. It's dimly lit and not very loud, perfect for small conversations with your significant other or companion. We had the... Mousse de Foie de Canard (duck liver pate with cornichon), Medallions de Porc aux Champignons (medallions of tenderlion pork with mushroom demi-glace), and Filet De Boeuf Au Poivre De Madagascar (filet mignon with cognac and green peppercorn sauce). Pate was nomsy! There was a pretty, healthy portion of pate over a bed of pickled veggies, cabbage, olives, and pickles. The different veggies complimented the pate well! Loved the contrast in texture and taste! It also paired well with the bread we had on the side. That spread thing that came with the bread was also NOMSY! I have no idea what it is though. :c Must ask next time I'm back! I wasn't too big of a fan of the pork though, a bit dry but was much more moist with the mushroom glaze it was sitting in. The filet mignon was cooked nicely medium rare and was very, very tender. Again, it was also sitting in a very rich, flavorful sauce making both entrees very, very rich in flavor. The potato and veggies on the side of both entrees were all very simple, but tasty! We wanted to try the crepe special that night, but they unfortunately ran out. I came here with my family for my 23rd birthday dinner and it is officially our favorite French restaurant. I saw the positive reviews on yelp and liked how this place didn't look pretentious. It looked cozy and authentic and I liked their classic non-fusion menu. I called to make reservations and was excited to hear the lady with her French accent. haha ok. Silly I know but that's another star for having real French people serving some French food-always adds to the experience. My family ordered 1. the fresh sea scallops with the bechamel emmental sauce (this was delectable and came in an uber cute scallop dish. This dish was very rich and creamy and the scallops were cooked perfectly). My grandpa used to talk about this dish so I was very excited to try it for the first time 2. filet mignon with peppercorn sauce (we got this medium rare and the meat was so tender we could cut it with the blunt end of our knife-and the peppercorn sauce was finger licking good) 3. roasted crispy half duck (this was by far the best dish here and hands down the best duck I have tasted in my life. it wasn't fatty like the ducks I normally eat and the skin was so thin and crispy-I is a true wonder how they make this dish. Pure genius and talent I say. I will definitely be coming back here to get another taste of this duck with tangy fruit sauce-I am still dreaming about it) 4. special for that day-chicken with brandy and marinated in beer sauce (this was also very tender and the flavor was so unique. the carrots that accompanied the dish were also SUPER sweet and juicy) 5. fruit crepe (with mangos! that was pretty interesting) 6. grand mariner cheesecake with melba sauce 7. coffee (dad said it had a hint of butter though I don't think it did-but butter makes everything more fantastic doesn't it?) 8. free bread with butter (the bread had such a nice crunch and the butter was whipped and fluffy) Yes the restaurant is quite modest, and the food display is quite standard, and the lighting could be nicer, but this place is QUAINT and the food is spectacular. The food is just alright. I don't think the quality and taste of the food is worth the cost, though. The most terrible was how dirty their utensils were. The first set of utensils that were passed out were fine, but the second set was mostly dirty. I'm talking dry crud that would not wipe off even with a wet towel. That's pretty disgusting. We were a party of four, but the bread basket we started off with only held three slices of bread. We thought that was pretty rude. I've never seen so little bread in a bread basket for four people. I don't think I've ever only had three measly pieces in a party of two. Nevertheless, we did ask for more. We needed it to go with the pate anyway. We ordered three hors d'oevres. The bisque de homard is a lobster bisque. This bisque was bitter and not that tasty. The mousee de foie de canard is a duck liver with comichon. It was just alright. I've had better pate. I did like their mini pickles, though. The escargots de bourgogne was probably the best dish I had there. It's snails in the shell with garlic and butter. A bit on the salty side, but still edible. The snail meat was soft, tender, and slightly chewy. The medallions de porc aux champignons was to salty for my taste. The meat wasn't that great. The meat in the filet de boeuf au poivre vert de madagascar was too coarse and chewy. We had the creme brulee for dessert. This was very delicious and made well. You can tell its freshly torched because the top of the plate was still warm. They should have added more sugar to the top to make it crispier, though. There wasn't enough. This place was on my list for a very long time but never got around trying it, even though I have been living in Mountain View for close to 5years. This is not an upscale restaurant in any way nor is it a fine dining place with a wide range of items on their menu, so don't come here expecting that. It is a tiny cozy little restaurant set up like a home atmosphere. There are about 8-10 tables placed closed to each other and its easy to overhear others conversation. That being aside, it is a family run restaurant, the menu has been the same for years and has only 4-5 entrees. Food is great no matter what you order. I went with friends who are a regular here. I tried the baked salmon dish and others in my group tried the scallop, pork and chicken entrees. Coq au vin is always a safe bet if you are unsure what to order. We also ordered crepe for dessert which was alright, although the chocolate mousse that the person in the next table ordered looked great. Fantastic, traditional French cuisine made with love. The French onion soup, mussels with garlic broth, fresh rustic rolls (with garlic butter and of course to sop up the broth), and duck a l'orange were all spectacular. And the service was impeccable from start to finish. read more
