Came here for my birthday and had an excellent time. I was a little worried eating out with our 2-year-old and 5-year-old, but the staff at Le Petit Châtelet were very helpful and accommodating. It's a very cozy restaurant with a big fire going in the back where they grill the steaks. We started with the petit chèvre tart, which was savory and delicious. My husband ordered the fire grilled steak, I ordered the duck confit, we got the chicken breast for our kids to share. The duck confit ended up being the hit of the night. Our kids ended up eating most of mine. The chicken was dry and not very flavorful. Our server recommended a chateuneuf du pape to pair with dinner and it was the perfect compliment. At the recommendation of management at Hotel Notre Dame, we stopped by for dinner on our first night in Paris. As starters, we had the escargot and beef tartare with potatoes and salad. Very generous portions, so generous that we ended up cancelling our main entrees, as it would have been too much food. The escargot was served very differently: in a broth or soup with mushrooms and a puff pastry on top. I loved it; boyfriend wanted traditional escargot with the herb butter. I thought the beef tartare was excellent, but boyfriend was looking for something more traditional. We shared a nice bottle of French red wine, and had the dessert, which was cheese with a tart fruit sauce on top of it and fresh mint. A colorful presentation, but neither of us liked the dessert very much - too tart. Not terrible, just different. We were out looking for dinner and happened to find this beautiful hidden gem. Our food was phenomenal. The house made foil gras was so smooth and flavorful, probably the best we have had. The steak was beautiful cooked and very well seasoned. It was being cooked in a little fireplace in the dining room area. Such a nice little touch. Sea bass and scallop was perfectly goes well with the butter sauce. Staffs are extremely nice and helpful especially with the language barrier. My in-laws recommended we come here for dinner. If you ever wanted to experience eating leisurely out on the street while watching people stroll by this is the perfect place. It gets crowded very fast. We got there just as they started dinner service. They close after 2:30PM and open for dinner at 7PM. We got there right at 6:59 and people were already being seated. We managed to snag a table and a black board menu was placed right to the side of us as well as two laminated menus. They have a prefix menu that was perfect for me. Appetizer, entree and dessert for a reasonable price. You can pick any appetizer off the menu but you only get the choice of the entrees that were starred. So I got the pork but I really wanted the Duck confit. My husband who didn't want a lot of food so opted to just get an entree graciously ordered the duck for me and took my pork. We split the appetizer which was prosciutto and melon. The melon was juicy and sweet which went very well with the salty meat. We also split the crepes with grand mariner which was lit on fire. It was sweet and the alcohol was very strong. My husband enjoyed his pork medallions. The sauce on it was great. My duck confit was delicious. Tender, well seasoned, and the sauce was so good that I made sure I used the bread to sop up any remainder. The complementary bread was crust on the outside and chewy on the inside. The house white wine was pretty good, very dry. Props to the waiters too. He spoke French but as soon as he saw we didn't he spoke English with a British accent. Another waiter took over later and he also spoke perfect English and apparently has traveled all over including New York. Everything was great just be aware that time passes differently for meals. They are super slow with presenting the check. Even after asking we waited a while, it's like they don't want us to leave. It's typical for meals to last over an hour and half. This small gem was recommended by a fellow travel friend for a place to enjoy a wonderful French dinner nearby to Notre Dame and located close enough to enjoy many other things within walking distance. We had the hotel call and make us a reservation which didn't appear to be required but our table was ready and waiting inside on the downstairs level by the fireplace. It's very quaint and crowded but the upstairs room, seen when I went to the restroom, is much more spacious and has a few tables by windows overlooking the cathedral. Notre Dame is still undergoing massive renovations and is not open but the nearby streets and cafes are all thriving and back to life. Our server was a Native American speaker probably there on summer holiday. He was a little bit of a smarta$$ but we made it work. He didn't offer much unless asked about what the menu items were in French but their menu in the back had a list of common items in English to make it easier. We went with the roasted goat cheese salad and crawfish salad to start. Both were wonderful. My fiancee got the seabass and scallops entree while I chose the special of the night, rabbit. Both were good but mine was tender and juicy and absolutely delicious. Not something I'm prone to order normally, but I'm glad I did. They have a large dessert selection and we went with the server's recommendation of Tiramisu which was very good. They also had creme brûlée and gelato and sorbets. Food was served with crispy bread cooked right in front of us on their open fire pit. It's charming and was delicious. Would absolutely visit again next time I'm in Paris. read more

The food and service were both excellent. The menu is in French, though they do have a sort of English menu showing examples of dishes they might have on a given day. They will also go through that day's chalk menu with you to explain what each dish is. I heard them speaking French, Italian, and English, and even a little Spanish, in case any of those languages help you out. This restaurant has a wood burning oven, and my husband got the skewered lamb that was cooked on that oven - delicious! I had the scallops, which were good, but scallops are so expensive everywhere now, so the portion was small. Dessert was the most delectable part for me. I had the poached pear with violet ice cream. France sure does seem to do floral flavors and pears right, and never was this aptitude better on display than here. It's always risky to eat at a restaurant in a touristy area, but this family-owned restaurant seems like the real deal. If you want good French food, give this a try. Have been three times each spread out by 3-4 years and every time it has been fantastic. My mother-in-law is a really picky eater of French 'brasserie style' food so the seemingly home style cooking of Petit Chatelet is always a godsend. It's also a really cozy place to spend a few hours eating lunch (we have always eaten inside because of the crowds swarming around its next door neighbor Shakespeare & Co though the outside dining offers a great view of Notre Dame). We've enjoyed a ton of things there but standouts include the goat cheese tarte, the super tender beef cheeks and the olive oil poached salmon. One draw back is that it is quite pricey for a lunch but the quality is very high so I guess it's a trade off. read more

Le Petit Châtelet is located directly next to Shakespeare and Company, and across the Seine from Notre Dame. A wood-burning oven (which is not just for aesthetics, they actually cook food in there!) sits in one corner of the tiny dining room. Of all the restaurants where we dined this past week, the tables here are the closest together--they are literally touching, and the staff needs to pull each table out completely so someone can sit on the booth side. Cozy would be a word to describe the ambiance, between the fire, proximity to your neighbors, and warmth of service. Upstairs is another small dining room, in addition to the bathrooms. The food at Le Petit Châtelet is outstanding! My mom and I shared an appetizer of mushrooms with garlic, which were super garlicky and simply fabulous. We also enjoyed some of the house rosé wine with our meal. My sea bass and scallops were incredible. Both the fish and scallops were perfectly cooked, with a melange of vegetables beneath including zucchini, mushrooms, bell peppers, leeks and more. The cream sauce must have been made with magic cream because it seriously didn't taste heavy at all. I practically licked my plate clean. Mom's chicken was the last one of the night and absolutely excellent. The perfectly cooked statler chicken breast was pre-sliced by the kitchen staff, and served with a crazy flavorful jus, nicely seasoned with a deep, meaty flavor. It was accompanied by a beautifully prepared rice. Together it was simply magic. Since it was our last night in Paris, we went all out and ordered dessert as well. The profiteroles were excellent, filled with beautiful vanilla bean ice cream. Supremely delicious! This was truly a memorable experience for us, between the excellent food, wonderful atmosphere, and warm service. I will most definitely return during a future visit to Paris (fingers crossed!). My cousins and I had a lovely meal at Le Petit Chatelet on our first day in Paris- the location is right by Notre Dame Cathedral. I saw creme brulee on the menu so chose to go with a smaller appetizer as my entree. I selected the goat cheese tart (which also included a little salad) and it was delicious. The meal portions here were quite large, and my cousins struggled to finish their full entrees. In addition to the entrees, we split a bottle of rose and it was delicious. Our server here was very friendly, and provided some nice tips to us as tourists in his city which was lovely. The bathrooms were up a couple of small flights of stairs- definitely not accessible for everyone- which I found to be a common challenge in Paris. I did end up getting the creme brulee- here it came with two small containers of it and each had a fruit jam in the bottom which was delicious and refreshing I would love to come back here if I was back in Paris. read more

The menu has many options as well as their daily specials on the board and the open wood burning oven in the dining area is a nice touch as the toasted bread is always warm as it comes to your table. Started off with the Foie Gras terrine which was accompanied with a marmalade and slices of toasted baguette; excellent flavor and not super rich. For the entrees the filet of beef cooked medium rare with a wine reduction paired with a gratin and mixed vegetables was a hearty dish; the Atlantic salmon with a medley of vegetables sauté in olive oil was very light but packed a punch in flavor. Service: Excellent service as the staff provide guidance in translating the menu but it does help to know some French to get through the menu. Friendly and very attentive. Ambiance: You feel like you are in someone's home and though it may look small there is an upstairs that has additional seating and a large bathroom. read more

Wife and I dined at Le Petit Chatelet on 10/22/24. We each had the sautéed. Mushroom appetizer and the veal main course. We both agreed it was our best meal during our 4 day stay in Paris. Veal was tender and delicious with an excellent sauce. Mushrooms were sautéed perfectly. House white was also excellent. Unfortunately, we can't recall the name of our delightful waitress. The lower level is rather small and an equal sized room is upstairs. There is a fire that they cook over in the lower level. The ambiance of this place was great! They had a 3-course meal deal but we decided to order 3 courses that were not included. We started by spliting a bottle of wine. Next we both ordered salads. My salad was delicious! I could not get enough of it! I ordered the sea bass and scallops for my main entree. It was just as good as the salad. To seal the dinner, I ordered the creme brulee. It came out as two dishes, one mango and the other strawberry. Yummy! So glad we found this place and they had a table available! Overall, the two of us spent around 89 Euros. This had the best bathrooms I used in Paris (besides my hotel). This is a huge plus in my book! read more

I always feel a little divided on writing a review based only on a group dining experience - it's not necessarily the best way to experience what a restaurant has to offer, especially if not given any choices in the menu. As of right now I'd probably rate them more of a 2.5 than 3, but I'm giving a benefit of the doubt for the situation. So I was here with a group of 20+ people, we took up the entire upstairs dining area - and that upstairs dining area was probably the bulk of what made the experience less than wonderful for me. It was an extremely hot day, and that room basically felt like we were sitting in an oven with no air flow unless you were one of the fortunate few seated by the windows. I was uncomfortable from the moment we sat down and it seemed like they were very stingy with handing out ice for our lukewarm water - and not very chilled white wine. The first course was quite good - a salad of shaved zucchini, fennel and seafood in a delicate dressing. I might have enjoyed the second course of salmon and vegetables more if I wasn't so overheated already, but I did find it a bit oily and heavy for my tastes. Also, way too rich for me to eat in suffocating conditions. Dessert was a bit odd - each of us were served TWO creme brulees, one with berries and one with mangoes. Not sure why the excess as both were good but too much to enjoy (I would have greatly preferred a cold dessert or at least a little cream or berries and ONE brulees). While the group was lingering at this point, I had to run out as I truly felt ill from the heat and stifling conditions. I would like to come back here some other time on my own, as the downstairs looked very charming and I don't feel like I had the best chance to sample this restaurant's menu (so perhaps, consider this review a warning/caveat for anyone looking to book a group dinner here, especially during the summertime.) read more

Cute little restaurant near Notre Dame. We were the first ones there and snagged a table outside. Great view for people watching as it's near the Latin Quarter and Notre Dame. We got a bottle of house red wine. We started with the escargot which was served under a puffy pastry shell with mushroom sauce. So amazing. I was sopping up the sauce with bread after the escargot was gone. I then decided to be adventurous and tried the duck with caramel sauce. Sounds gross but somehow it worked perfectly. The sweet sauce was a nice compliment to the duck. We ended our meal with an ice cream topped crepe. Traditional French meal, can't go wrong! read more

Wonderful experience. We walked in this place after passing by many a crowded eatery among the many narrow cobblestone paths. It was cold and damp, and yet we had a seat at the small table for two in the middle of the restaurant, at around 7:30pm. The service was kind and patient! I always feel a little deficient when I don't speak the native language, but everyone here was friendly towards us - the waitress flipped a chalkboard menu on a chair close to us to bring it closer to us for our perusal, while also giving us a menu that already had English translations. The head waiter came over and explained that there were items on the board not on the menu and went through them one by one, some items he paused to explain a little more. We went for the veal kidney (I love offal!) and my husband the fish - I went for the set menu that included an appetizer and dessert; the appetizer was rabbit pate, three thick slices on a fresh salad, delicious. Carafe of house rose, good and floral and dry. The kidney was cooked to order (head waiter suggested Medium after he learned that I like steak rare) and really toothsome and strong tasting, something I really enjoy. I definitely felt the country french charm in each bite, swathed in sauce and the herbed mashed potatoes so fragrant. Behind me, the fire crackles as it torches another client's steak. Husband sees a tall pastry covered cup and learned it was the escargot and couldn't help but get it! It was creamy and fragrant, steam piping up from the hole he prodded in the flaky pastry. The meal was unhurried and wholesome, we felt really at home and cozy with the fire. There is additional seating upstairs as well.
