I'm so glad to have gone to this local French food go-to. Le Rendezvous is a true fine dining French restaurant that'sbeen around since 1980. The food was really delicious. For appetizers, their escargots was very well-prepared and presented. The mussels are very good as well. Both of these have really flavorful sauces so def make sure you have enough bread to scoop em up. For entrées, we ordered the bouef wellington (filet steak dish coated with pate and duxelles wrapped in puff pastry) and filet au poivre vert (black pepper crusted beef tenderloin). The puff pastry on the beef wellington was tiny bit soaked/soggy but otherwise, the flavors are still there. I didn't try their French onion soup at this visit but have heard raving reviews about it. For dessert, we preordered the Grand Marnier soufflé and it was worth the very short wait, though still felt there may have been a just a bit too much orange liqueur. Nevertheless, this restaurant is probably the only place in Tucson serving these dishes. There may be other restaurants that serve French-style cooking or French cuisine, but Le Rendezvous is Tucson's French restaurant. read more

I can honestly say that as a foodie, gourmand and gourmet, it is rare for me to give a 5 star rating but this unassuming bistro in north Tucson deserves every one of those stars. The vichyssoise was the second best I have ever had. The coquille st Jacques similarly excellent. I consider beef Wellington to be a bel weather of cuisine. I did not disappoint. My wife had the black cod with risotto. A good risotto is hard to perfect but chef Jesus' classic French training managed this feat. We made a reservation for Saturday night, and there were a number of couples dining in, but our section had tables spaced far enough that I was comfortable. Our server was very polite and attentive. I ordered a glass of Cab Franc, which was decent, but my husband got a glass of Cab that was even better. Our server was nice enough to bring him tastes of two wines before he decided. We got the coquilles gratinees (scallops) to start, and it was a really tiny appetizer, but it was very good. We each got a French onion soup as well. Again, kind of small, but it was rich and delicious. For our mains, my husband did the Boeuf Wellington, and I had the Filet au Poivre Vert. They both came with potatoes au gratin and seasonal veggies (squash and zucchini). The meats were both very good. My filet was maybe a bit dry around the outside, but it was cooked to my liking, and the peppercorn sauce was good. The potatoes were good, but both mine and my husband's were cold. Maybe plated too early while the meat was finished? The veggies were really good. When I saw them, I thought 'Meh,' but the way they were cooked and seasoned perfectly, probably with a lot of butter! Probably the best veggies I've gotten in a restaurant. French food is very rich and heavy, and this is definitely a higher-priced meal, so I wouldn't come all the time, but it is nice for a special occasion. This restaurant is absolutely stunning; from the interior to the atmosphere to the service - and ESPECIALLY the food! I came here with my husband as a treat, and everything was really spectacular. I think the least impressive part of the meal was the coffee I ordered, which was pretty standard - and it only stands out as such because everything else we had was absolutely AMAZING! Firstly, the complimentary bread is delicious, I couldn't get enough (so be warned to not eat too much, I was nearly full by the time we got the food)! For an appetizer we ordered the mini Wellington, and it was flavorful and beautifully cooked - the meat was juicy and the sauce was perfect! For our entree we decided to get the Chateau Briand Bérnaise Sauce for 2, and it was DELIGHTFUL! The meat was tender, juicy, and well seasoned - the vegetables on the side were equally well cooked and delicious, the potatoes were the perfect texture of crunchy + soft insides, and the sauce was an amazing addition! For dessert we ordered Crème Brûlée and Baba Au Rhum and they were both some of the best desserts I have every had! The berry sauce on the Baba Au Rhum was especially good, but the Crème Brûlée was my favorite! It was so delicate and felt like a nice refreshing sweet treat, while the Baba Au Rhum was more heavy since it's basically a thick cake. I could go on and on about how wonderful the food is here, I can't speak highly enough of it! This definitely one of the best restaurants in Tucson in terms of the food quality. However since it is on the higher end of quality, as you can expect it's also on the higher end when it comes to price. I think it's definitely worth it, and if I could afford to eat here every week, I would! No matter your budget I hope everyone will get the chance to try Le Rendezvous and feel like royalty while they're eating some of the best food in town! I've been wanting to come here for a while now but something always came up. Finally said, we're going!! Let's be honest... I wanted a soufflé. It seems to be a little house converted into a restaurant, so it's a unique floor plan. Divided into 2 themes, casual and fine dining. We ended up in the table cloth area which meant no happy hour... we weren't informed that before hand and didn't want to be difficult. Our server was ok, did a decent job, just didn't wow. But our busser, he needs a raise! He was amazing, he was extremely attentive and he was hilarious. Casual teasing jokes. Food took a while but well worth the wait, I ordered the filet and it was cooked to order at the table. One of the best I've ever had. I would probably eat here every day, just for the soufflés. I've dined at Le Rendez-vous twice now for dinner. Both meals, fabulous. On this most recent visit, I started with a French 75, just as with my first visit. If you enjoy this type of cocktail from time to time, you will not be let down by the French 75 at Le Rendez-vous. Perfectly crisp, tart and lightly sparkling. While some may feel it is cliché considering that "French onion soup" can be found everywhere, you can certainly count on a restaurant like Le Rendez-vous to serve up a Soupe A L'Oignon Gratinee that you will enjoy much, much more. I absolutely loved it. So will you. For my entrée, I had the Beef Wellington, which is virtually impossible to find in Arizona and is served on the regular menu at only one other restaurant that I am aware of. It was delectable! Perfectly prepared, with the excellent cut of tender beef cooked evenly, buttery foie gras, mushroom duxelle, truffle demi-glace and just the right flakiness on the pastry. Perfectly delicious. In my opinion it's a classic, must-do dish that any steak lover should try at least once in their life, and Le Rendez-vous serves it up in a way that will leave you most satisfied. For desert, our table ordered Grand Marnier Souffle. Prepared tableside in grand fashion, this was a culinary treat worth the extra calories. Enjoy! Finally, service was impeccable. This used to be one of my favorite lunch and dinner places. Hands down. I ordered the escargot. Excellent. So when they changed the menu (must be a couple of years ago) I noticed the change. A disappointing change. (Some of my favorite dishes were taken off). Anyway I ordered the Brie chicken sandwich. Admittedly this was the first time I have ever ordered a sandwich here. It was something I regret. It was greasy. It had some flavor (hard not to with Brie). However greasy. Hard bread. Real hard. Not just crusty. Salad was fresh enough. The service was terrible. Slow is the key word. Three times she said she would refill my coffee. Why was it not just refilled. We were so disappointed. This is like a big loss. The music was loud. After having a huge craving for French food, my husband and daughter and I came to Le Rendez-vous after work yesterday night. We made a reservation for 8 but didn't show up until 8:10PM and they were all so nice. A waiter held the door open for us (and when we left). I will speak of etiquette first. All the waiters are dressed exactly the same- traditionally professional. They are all very nice and smiling and attentive. I'm not used to having the front door held open for us so huge plus on service. We never felt rushed on our meal despite them closing at 9pm and us not leaving the restaurant until 9:30. In fact we asked for our soufflé at around 9:15PM, after closing. I apologized for overstayed and they were nothing but kind about it. Now on to the food- hands down one of the most reasonably priced and most delicious French places I've ever tried. We started with the escargot, the terrine pate, and the mussels. My 4 yo pretty much ate the whole mussel dish herself and she's a super picky eater. I dunked all my bread in that wonderfully rich and amazing sauce and shamelessly asked to take the sauce to go because I have baguette at home and I love that sauce. The escargot was a wheee tad too rich on the butter for me but it was still great! I may not get it next time though. Pate was amazing. And a huge huge portion. For entree my husband got the egg battered sea bass while I got the glazed duck (I can't remember the exact French name of those dishes). His fish was so crispy on the outside but not oily and so light and fluffy on the inside. My daughter who complained about being full from the mussels still ate a good bit of his fish. My duck was great! Very sweet and crispy skin and very yummy dark meat duck underneath but my only critique is the amount of fat under the skin- kinda took away from the taste a bit. Oh and the brandy soaked cherries (too bitter). Our sides were the same- au gratin potatoes and sautéed squash and tomatoes. They are wonderful as the potatoes were crunchy outside and soft inside while the squash were very cooked through yet maintained a nice crunch to it (I have cooked squash so many times before and they all turn out either mushy or undercooked). Normally I never have room for dessert but I decided to quit my entree with half to take home to make room for dessert which was the amazing grand marnier soufflé. No words. It came out juggling on top and perfect golden brown. The cream they used took my back to childhood pastries with the perfect consistency and when the spoon first dug it and the crust and custard and cream went into my mouth it just totally made my night. That soufflé was so well done and the grand marnier added just the right amount of orange flavor. I'm still thinking about them today! read more

On my birthday, my husband and I were looking for a new date-night type place. We wanted to go somewhere delicious and romantic that we had never been to before. I found a list on Tucson Foodie of date-night restaurants and Le Rendez-vous was on it! Being a huge francophile and a foodie, I couldn't believe I had never heard of it! We took the chance and made the reservation for that night, and I'm so glad we did! I don't think I can adequately explain the elation that each dish brought. We got: - Escargot, which I must say, was much better than the escargot we happened to have in Paris. Instead of serving it in shells, it was served in a dish with little divots filled with melted butter, herbs and the escargot itself. -Mussels in a white wine sauce. We enjoyed the sauce so much that we rather embarrassingly sopped up every bit of it with our (delicious) bread. -Beef Wellington. This struck me as a very traditional beef Wellington but I can't speak to the taste because my husband loved it so much that he wouldn't let me have any. I joked that he was going to leave me for this dish and he didn't correct me haha. -I got the duck. It was all dark meat with a sweet cherry sauce, and it was crispy outside but moist inside. It was a huge portion too! -Because it was my birthday, they brought me a soufflé for dessert, even though the kitchen was closing. The soufflé was light, fluffy and not too sweet. Overall, the service was superbly friendly and attentive and the entire experience was a delight. We went for 49th anniversary of our engagement. It was just like French restaurant of 49 years ago but it exists and the other doesn't. We had Pepper Steak and Beef Wellington which were quite good. C'est si bon! We've been coming to this bijou of a restaurant after finding it by accident in 2007. It was delicious then and, if possible, it's even better 17 years later. An intimate venue with both a very comfortable formal dining room and more casual "patio" area, this is the place we bring all our out-of-town guests and our three adult daughters and their families when they're visiting. As if we needed another example, our dinner last night was merveilleux. We were welcomed by Diego and his very capable staff as if we were visiting royalty, and one of Diego's signature Cosmos was waiting for me. My husband and I split the escargots - tender, juicy morsels served with all the fresh, warm bread necessary to soak up the garlic butter - then the trio de champignons - warm brie and a variety of toothsome mushrooms nestled in golden puff paste - and finally, foie gras that would make the angels applaud, served with homemade, wafer-thin crostini and micro greens. While usually not a dessert girl, I can never resist their Grand Mariner soufflé with homemade, flavored whipped cream to top the evening off. The beautiful setting, the service par excellence, and the delicious food (don't forget to check out their daily specials) - even Carthusian monks would shout for joy. We were a party of four visiting Le Rendez-vous for the first time last Friday, June 8th. We were pretty excited as it was my wife's and my 10th wedding anniversary dinner. We got married at Le Central in Denver, and had a wonderful meal for our party of 50 guests after the ceremony, replete with a pate board: four pates and various pickles, including cornichons. We are great fans of French food, and have eaten at French restaurants all over the world. Le Rendez-vous falls far short of the high end, but I credit them for their effort and persistence as they appear to be the only French restaurant in Tucson, and have been in business for several years. The menu itself is a laminated piece of paper, instead of a booklet. All of our menus were sticky, obviously not wiped clean in who knows how long. The wine list is short, but reasonably priced. They do not offer corkage, so that patrons can bring their own wine. This is foolish in my opinion, as we would have gladly paid $20 to $30 per bottle to bring our own wine. We had a Taittinger Brut NV which was very good, a Sancerre which was quite good and a La Crema Pinot Noir which was also very good. Service was friendly but slow, a bit uncoordinated which is odd for a white tablecloth restaurant. We had to pour our own wine, ask for water, and conversation was entirely initiated on our part, not theirs. Food: there were some stars but sadly too many stumbles. First and foremost, they had no pate that evening. I cannot describe how disappointed we were, especially my wife and the other lady in our group. The waiter said they made it too late, and it had not set. For a Friday night? Seriously? The stars were the escargots, brie en croute, vichysoisse, onion soup, moules Provencale, and the demi-glace sauce. Demi-glace is an effort to make from scratch, but its essence is also available in a jar. Either way, their demi-glace was seriously good. The escargots were not over-seared, as is often the case, the vichysoisse was fluffy, savory, and refreshing, and the mussels were fresh and tasty, as was their broth. The brie had a light crispy crust and a soft, semi-melted texture. My ris de veau, veal sweetbreads, were good, but a little overcooked. Our Chateaubriand was quite overcooked. We ordered it rare and it came out medium well. The server was not accustomed to the precise carving style for the meat, and his carving knife, although the right kind of knife, was obviously not sharp. He struggled to carve the steak. The Bearnaise sauce was just okay, it had the texture of mayonnaise instead of the smooth, gravy-like flow of a proper Bearnaise (or Hollandaise for that matter). Fortunately the demi-glace/bordelaise sauce was spooned over the meat, adding considerable flavor. The sides were forgettable. The potatoes Anna were a disaster, hard and chewy on top and soft on the bottom. The steamed squash were just that, steamed squash, like you could get at a Cracker Barrel. We ordered the souffle for dessert, two to share amongst the four of us. I was surprised by how quickly they came out. It usually takes a half an hour to make a souffle. There was no powdered sugar on top, another oddity, and the taste was very eggy. I give this dish an A for quickness but a C- for taste. I would have been happier to see them take another ten to fifteen minutes and deliver a really wonderful souffle. No Armagnac for post-prandial liqueur. The waiter offered a VSOP Calvados when I asked if they had any. I did not ask for a Cognac. I finished my Pinot Noir, and that was our meal. There was one other thing that detracted from the ambiance of the restaurant. Like the sticky menus, there was an archway into the kitchen from the dining room with curtains, but the curtains weren't drawn such that you could see the plastic crates for glasses, the stainless steel shelving and sink, etc. An unpleasant sight in what is supposed to be an elegant restaurant. So why did I give Le Rendez-vous three stars and not fewer? They're trying. I gave them one star for effort, and two stars for food and service. read more
