I tried to like it. I really did. Okay, okay. So my boyfriend and I went to visit Paris (it was my first time in Europe), but we procrastinated and held off finding a place for dinner until the literal morning of in which we began clicking on spots through Google Maps. We stumbled upon this place, a restaurant with a Michelin Star and a 7-course tasting menu for 130€ each (which, for a college student and a fresh-out-of-college person, is a lot but not impossible). So I thought, what the hell? It's my first time in Europe. Let's do it. We get to the place. Expectations are reasonably high. ... And they came crashing down. We were given these little cracker sticks when we were seated. They were incredibly stale, and I didn't even finish one. Of course, I looked past this, as I'm sure the star wasn't for some top-quality cracker sticks. When the first two courses came out, my boyfriend made small remarks the food was good. I agreed. The food was good. But it was just... good. Like, the 5€ salmon baguette I had that morning was great. This was just... good. Then the third course came out (this is how mediocre it was. I can't even remember any detail of what I ate). By the time I was finished with it, I looked at my boyfriend and I asked him "do you think it's possible that because we're so young, they're skimping out on real ingredients because they think that we can't possibly know any better?" Somewhere during the 5th course, my boyfriend stopped eating his plate. There was some ravioli-like item, and he said: "this isn't worth getting full over." That's right, folks. 130€ for food not even getting full over. TL;DR: the food was mediocre at best. Maybe it /was/ because we were young and they skimped out on ingredients, convinced that we couldn't tell. But I sure as hell know good food when I've had it, and this was not it. Party of 8 lunch. We ordered 8 sets to try everything. Appetizers: the sea urchin appetizer edged out the pate in toast. It comes in black shells with such amazing goodness. Mains: i loved the black pudding with hare. So rich and tender, bursting with umami and cholesterol filled goodness. May be too gamey for some. Scallops were most ordered, very fresh but tiny portions. Duck was good but not great, have had better. Codfish was good, can't remember much. Desserts: both excellent and refined. I chose this place as a recommendation on the online reservation system The Fork/LaFourchette. Cannot recommend this highly enough. Had the tasting menu and was alone for the afternoon lunch, but it was enjoyable all the same. The wait staff was friendly and abundant, and for an American woman who speaks VERY basic French, this made my experience all the better. The maître d, sommelier, and waiters were all fantastic! The restaurant itself is very modern and clean and the intimacy of it all, despite how fancy it was, was EXTREMELY comfortable and I found myself relaxed throughout the meal. The food itself was excellent, I myself, having never tried things like pigeon or foie gras, found it to be enjoyable but this place probably isn't suited for Americans willing to go out of their comfort zones and try such delicacies. However, I think the real stand out here was the dessert and as much as the hype the famous "chocolate tart", I think the real standout was the strawberries with fresh cream before it - simple, yet elegant and delicious beyond words. On a side note - a lovely French couple sat next to me and just RAVED about the food and even stopped me on my way out to compliment me on choosing "the best restaurant in Paris". The only thing is once we were finished with our meal, our server stopped paying attention to us and stopped refilling our water so it made it hard to flag down our server for the check and also when i'm paying 8 euros per person, I'd like to keep getting my water refilled even if my meal's finished! That being said, the service from when we walked in to right about the end of our meal was impeccable. The food was great as well. Came with a complimentary appetizer of foie gras and beef (?) tongue which had amazing flavor! My friend who has never had anything like this in her life agreed it was very tasty but she had to bring herself to stop thinking of what she was actually eating! Was also given fresh warm bread for the table. and we also ordered an appetizer of asparagus to share. I had the sweetbreads for an entree at the recommendation of our server. It had great flavor and just melted in my mouth. it came with a side of asparagus that were super tender. My friend got the lamb and I had a few bites of it. It was super tasty as well and very tender. Lamb can get super tough when cooked too long but they cooked the lamb perfectly. Ended the meal with the grand marnier souffle which was so good! Great way to end the meal. They also provided some complimentary chocolate things and thin peanut brittle at the end. read more

Several months ago, I received an email signaling that the restaurant would go through an ownership change. The objective of thE new owners was to continue the traditions of Christian Constant, build on them and develop some new, exciting directions. I was anxious to see how well the changeover was working, so I went last night. I believe the new team is on track to achieve their objective. I had a new appetizer, what was called Water Chestnuts. It consisted of sea urchin, eel roe and caviar in urchin shells. It was beautiful and delicious. I also had a new main dish -- turbot with mussels, beets and glassworts. It too was deelicious and beautiful. I had a traditional dessert -- a millefeuille. It was as good as ever. I will keep returning to this restaurant. read more

Came here for lunch because a friend in the states highly recommended it. Cute little place near the Eiffel Tower. I stepped in and noticed how well dressed everyone was for lunch. All the men were either in suits or jackets. They do a lunch special, 45 euros for three items. We ended up doing a la carte because the medallions lobster with risotto caught my eye. For starts I had the cesar salad and my husband had the soft boiled eggs rolled in breadcrumbs with toast. For my main dish I got the lobster with risotto and my husband got the veal cutlet. In the states cesar salad usually does not come with chicken unless you ask for it to be added. This one includes chicken. The flavor was amazing. My husband's eggs were perfectly cooked. The yolk oozed out once he cut the egg. Tasty!!! I loved my lobster risotto. Very rich in flavor and huge lobster pieces. I am not a fan of veal so I did not try but my husband said delicious!!! We did not have room to order dessert. They did bring us each a madeleine, a chocolate covered rice krispy and a toffee crispy. My husband ordered coffee to go with his treats. I took a bite of each just to sample and my husband ate the rest. Delicious meal. After lunch we walked to the Eiffel Tower. Perfect way to end lunch. The staff is professional and sweet. They've now been open for 19 years, and that's how long we've been coming here. It's still one of our Paris favorites. Not quite perfect, but close. It's a small, formal, white table cloth restaurant, with traditional French cuisine yet with modern flares. Perfect sauces. And great friendly service. Having already had wine elsewhere, we went straight to a great bottle of white Chateauneuf des Papes. For my starter, I had their foie gras de canard, prepared a bit different with gingerbread crumbs. That made a nice accent, allowing the foie gras creaminess and flavor to still dominate. My main course was their John Dory, in a light sauce with black olives, onions, and bacon. Tasty and tender. Desert was a Charteuse soufflé, nice like a traditional souffle, but knock-your-socks-off end-of-the-evening very-strong Charteuse liquor. But we still did manage a couple calvados after dinner. This remains on our "must" list for any visits to Paris. read more

This was the absolute best way to end our trip to Paris. We went here on our last night and the food and service couldn't have been more perfect. The waiter we had was so so so friendly and awesome. He spoke very good English and joked around. He also made a fabulous and affordable wine recommendation. There were no appetizers that I wanted (I'm kind of picky) so they made me a green salad and it was so so simple, but it was really delicious. My husband got the fois gras and he said it was the best fois gras of his life. He said it was so unique and tasty, the people at the table next to us were saying the same thing. I got the sea bass as my entree, it was crusted with almonds and the sauce was just so fabulous. It was such a yummy dish, wow. My husband got the sweetbreads and he loved them, he said they were some of the best he has ever had. We also got a side of the soufleed potatoes...I have never had anything like this in my life. Imagine a potato chip, but in the middle is air. They were like little potato footballs that were crispy and warm and filled with air. So fun!!!!! You have to get them. I got the strawberry and whipped cream dessert which was really yummy. My husband got the Grand Marnier souffle which was good too. This restaurant was one of our favorites in Paris because the atmosphere is great, the food is to die for, the service is wonderful and it wasn't too expensive!!! Went their on our recent family trip to Paris. Have been there before and it is still the same, great place! Even our kids, 7 and 9 enjoyed it. This is the main restaurant of popular chef Christian Constant. It is also on the same street as 2 other Constant-owned restaurants, but this one is the best. Overall, excellent food preparation and presentation, attentive service all in a contemporary decor is what makes this place great. Make reservations. Appetizers - Ritz Ceasar salad with parmesan wafers, croutons and anchovy vinaigrette - taste was great, hard to make a special presentation, but it was the best I have seen with salad tossed and 4 wedges of additional lettuce for decoration, I think - Russian salad with blue lobster and light horseradish mayonnaise - great combo of flavors - Soft boiled eggs with truffled toasts - kids shared this. one like caviar the other did not, but we thought it looked good Main courses - Traditional Montalbanais cassoulet - waiter said that this was comfort food dedicated to the region Chef Constant grew up in. The dish was very generous portion size, even by American standards. It had several varieties of meat like duck, lamb, sausage, and other in a great bean sauce - Fillet of sea bream with fresh basil, white beans from Paimpol cooked with shellfish - great presentation and wife could not get enough of the white beans cooked with shellfish - Kids thoroughly enjoyed the steak with crisp souffle potatoes - potatoes were light and airy and the steak was great. Example of service, they even took the steak back to cut back in smaller bites to save cutting time for our 7 year old Desserts - Millefeuille Christian Constant - wonderful dessert with light pastry and tasty cream in between. waiter said it was a house specialty Drinks Kids loved the apricot juice, enough to have it for dinner and dessert. One interesting thing about this restaurant is that they have a giant cupcake of butter that they cut each table's butter from. 10 stars!!!! Our favorite meal in Paris. Love the romantic and incredibly classy vibe in this restaurant. The service was absolutely incredible. No need to speak or know any French here. They have an English menu and everyone can speak English. We had the following: Pan seared foie gras - literally melts in your mouth. First time enjoying foie gras and it was delectable. Langostino ravioli - thick, creamy and delicious. Cassoulet - not my favorite part of meal but still very good. Huge servicing. Veal - my fiancé loved this! Had amazing side of pasta and cheese. Best ever. Chocolate tart - so so good. The vanilla bean cream is just yum. Grand mariner soufflé - can't even deal it was so good. The baguettes were amazing too. Please go here ! My friend visited here recently and asked me to pick up her signed cookbooks. I decided to have lunch. Sat at a hightop table in the middle of the restaurant. The service was impeccable; George the maitre'd esp kind. The Chef was there so I had two cookbooks signed. He thoughtfully wrote in each and came over personally to hand them to me. Two words: foie gras! I had it procured from 16 regions, I had it hand cured, slow heated, I had it poured, pureed: devoured in every fashion one can think of. There is NOTHING like the ginger crusted seared foie gras Christian Constant makes. Perfect bite, balance, it elevates your sensory signals straight to heaven. One word: Bravo! The new, available from tomorrow pre fix menu, which has the aforementioned pan seared foie gras, is nearly divine! Off the menu slices bites of herring on crusted bread went well with the a glass of brut rose. The baby peas soup over with a cucumber slice peel over what tasted like the vinegar treated mozzarella di buffalo (but in fact was a sheep's cream cheese) was nothing short of a 3 star Michelin experience. The soft boiled egg made washed with a glass of rose. How one can make a soft boiled eff a masterpiece? Simpler than your finest tamago, it's an art that truly differentiates if not defines a master chef from an amateur. The precise timing, the gentle touch, the dash of truffles make it simply perfect. Cabbage stuffed with lobster and scallops. Perhaps my least enjoyed dish. While the cabbage had been treated with the softness of the royalty treatment, the dish was a surprising lack of texture that I personally so much appreciate in both the sea creatures that should have been celebrated more in the dish. But then, monsieur Constant seem to be more interested in poultry and creatures you find in the farm, not sea. Pigeon roasted with shallots French style: another HUGE win. Definitely the best pigeon I've tried in my life. The thigh was nothing short of divine. Fantastic dish, and I am happy that it took a well deserved spot in the pre fix menu vs. the lamb which used to be there. Not that the lamb is a bad choice, but there are other masters that know well how to make lamb dishes vs. not so many that can concoct a perfect pigeon. I had it paired with Medoc, though, on a hindsight, should have selected a lighter red. The mascarpone with rasberries and honey was also very balanced and lightweight. Then came the Chocolate Tart. OH MY! For the 110 ex drinks it was definitely the best value I've experienced! The service was very good. AND very English friendly. Funny, attentive without being overly uptight. Finally, the selection of Isley bruisers won't leave any chance of finishing the dinner without a dash of peaty smoke-infused to solidify this night in your memory as nothing short of fabulous! This is a great place for a fancy night out -- perhaps a special occasion. I had a really excellent meal here. Everything was very excellently done. The tasting menu was a surprisingly good value given the spot-on execution. Some notable courses in the spring menu: The meal started with a cream of asparagus soup. The light flavor of the asparagus matched well with the fish in the soup -- and the cream was not too heavy. Who knew that beef tongue and foie gras were a good combination, and who knew that they made a start for a light meal? The scallops were executed well and nicely served with bits of broccoli. Instead of the very typical piece of steak, the main course was chicken -- a welcome change, and very appropriate for spring. The asparagus and morel mushrooms served with it were an attractive presentation. Gluten-free notes: They were even able to make the tasting menu without any wheat -- there was even a meringue, ice cream, raspberry sorbet, cream and strawberry extravaganza at the end which I was able to eat. read more

Service was spectacular and food was equally as good. What was really nice was that they gave a starter appetizer dish as well as an ending Madeline and pecan crisp for when you pay. This is all in addition to the free bread, so all of these freebies really stood out. The food was as follows: Cream of pumpkin soup - Absolutely divine. The soup with the croutons topped with cheese just melts in your mouth. Such a good mixture to eat each bit all together. Brittany Coast Ravioli - A surprising light, but packed with flavor dish. This combined with the pumpkin soup really hit the spot as far as appetizers go. French Veal Cutlet - Tender, tasty and the cheese macaroni side went well together. Rib of Beef from my apprenticeship - Equally as good as the veal, but the side was not as great. The side was this uniquely fried potato crisp which was very reminiscent of a lays potato chip. The cool thing is that it was in the shape of a sphere with a hollow middle, but the downer was that it was similar to a lays potato chip. Mont Blanc - This was good but by the time we received this, we were already immensely stuffed. I think we had reached negative returns in regards to our food at this point (i.e. brilliant food would not have tasted as good as if we were not so full). Food was "ok"... not 1 star worthy... Service though was an entirely different story. I don't think I've EVER had service that BAD! Mostly all of us had to dodge the server while he replaced our silverware per dish. He probably also accidentally kicked the legs of my chair (without any apology) 20 times during the 2 hours we were there. Kitchen was so loud, glasses breaking, silverware clanking, etc. My fish was raw, had to send it back. Plates weren't warm enough. A party of 10 being served by 1 person for a tasting menu was just not a good idea. By the time everyone had their food the first ones served had a cold plate. Sad sad sad. Won't be surprised if they lose their Michelin star. read more

I came here last Friday with some friends from out of town for Dinner. I love the location of this place - a cool little neighborhood just in the shadow of the Eiffel tower. However, a little tough for transportation (unless you take a cab) as I came via metro (plus a 10+ min walk from nearest stop). My starter and main plate were very good. I started with some sort of egg concoction and as I was very hungry, they recommended the beef, which was plenty big, rich and very good. Someone else at our table ordered the sea bass, which looked really good (and he confirmed it was), but it was very small, so keep that in mind. Our only knock on the place was the desert, which took for absolutely ever. We even asked for the bill before receiving it just to put some pressure on them. I was impressed with the waiter when he came sprinting out of the kitchen when it was ready though, that was cool. Oh, it also wasn't that good, had a souffle that didnt have a lot of taste to it. Would knock more stars off, but I'm not a big dessert eater anyways :) Place is a little pricey. Like most nice restaurants in Paris. Enjoy read more

Amazing! This was, hands down, the best meal I had in Paris. We began with the truffled, soft boiled eggs, which were light and tasty. The Foie Gras was divine...served with gingerbread crumbs and roasted baby carrots. Next up was the langoustine ravioli which was topped with a tarragon infused red pepper puree and wrapped in wonton type pasta - very delicate and translucent but with a nice bite to it. The sea bass was beautifully presented in a circle of crushed almonds, capers and herbs...it had the most wonderful variety of textures! The waiters were fabulous...very friendly and very attentive. The wine was also great, we tried three and my favorite was a red Sancerre. All served in a lovely space, with soft lighting and subtle colors. I will be back. read more

You pay more, but you sure do get more: nice appetizers, various types of fresh bread, great main courses (and quite different / interesting choices), tasty desserts, and top notch service. Everyone at our table enjoyed their meal. I got the pigeon, which tasted good, but the meat was a bit tough and not as plentiful as other fowl (not the restaurant's fault, by the way). Another reviewed called this place stuffy. I would totally disagree. The wait staff was very friendly (joking, laughing, etc. all in good taste) and we felt very welcome. We were in Paris for 6 days and ate at a variety of great restaurants from * to *** and this was our favorite restaurant. We did not consider the prices to be expensive in fact for what you get considering the service charge and VAT are included in the price it's actually a good deal compared to going out to a similar place in LA, SF or NY. Violin has great ambience and most importantly great food. We did not have the tasting menu but tried some of our favorites. We asked them if they would serve us the Foie Gras that was on the tasting menu and the chef complied with our request, it was the best Foie I ever had and I have eaten a lot of Foie, we had the sweatbreads and the beef both were amazing. Our biggest regret is we were so full we couldn't order the Souffle because it looked great. Love France because the wine by the glass is awesome they have great vintages. Would highly recommend this restaurant was amazing also. read more

We have an apartment in Paris and rarely go to expensive restaurants. We made an exception at Violon d'Ingres for my husband's special birthday. The atmosphere is very pleasant and the staff seemed welcoming when we arrived. But as the order was placed and food was delivered, the service devolved into something just horrible. We even told the head waiter, in French, that we were unhappy with the service. He never inquired why but just said he was sorry. They could not manage to deliver all dishes at the same time and had a terrible time splitting a salad, which we said upon ordering that we wanted split. The final blow was when they split the check in two and added an extra euro onto each bill. When that was brought to their attention, they remedied the situation by putting a euro on a place for the payer who had complained. No apology! We will not return, especially since we can have two or three fabulous meals for what we paid there. read more

Wonderful spot for our last night in Paris. Excellent food and service - great location walking distance to Eiffel Tower. Make a reservation - this is the same chef as the 2 other restaurants on the same street - Cafe Constant and Les Cocottes. We ate at Cafe Constant the night before and it was also just as fabulous - but with a more casual less formal atmosphere and prices reflecting that. (Stay tuned for that review) Back to Les Violon - we had the ribs for 2 and the pepper filet steak, the foie gras, the soft boiled eggs and the Russian salad with lobster. Everything was KICK ASS....I'm not kidding. I would say in general the starters were where the true creatively came into play with different flavors melding together unexpectedly and where traditional french ingredients were presented in new ways that were truly delicious and not just fancy and so-so. The servers were friendly and accommodating and spoke English really well. I think this place has one Michelin Star, and you'll know why if you try it. There were also a good bunch of locals here too - also a good sign in the middle of tourist season July. read more

We tried the fixed price (80 euros) menu and it was fantastic. To their credit, they offer wines by the bottle as low as (32 euros). I really wish it was possible to get a simple cocktail like a martini at a place like this (is this possible anywhere in Europe?!?)--didn't James Bond have no trouble getting one wherever he was in Europe? Perfect. This is the only way I can describe my experience here. I was traveling alone in Paris for the weekend and I was feeling a little antsy about eating alone. However, the staff was so welcoming and friendly - they made me feel okay about having a fancy, expensive meal solo. My waiter was talkative, friendly, and helped me select a delicious main course and wine to match. I had the langoustine ravioli and it was to DIE FOR. They also brought me a nice little plate of different breads to snack on while I ate. It is definitely pricey... but if you ever find yourself in Paris... totally worth the splurge. I don't know why the Parisian's get the reputation of not being friendly... the staff at Le Violon completely destroy that stereotype! I visited this restaurant with a party of six a couple weeks ago and we ordered the tasting menu, which was specially selected by the chef. It was a sublime experience. One of the highlights was an enormous, lightly seared slice of duck foie gras paired with sauternes. Amazing. The fish and duck courses were also quite excellent, but could not top the vanilla souffle with hand-poured caramel. The perfect end to an unforgettable meal. Well crafted dishes served with style and attention to detail have been consistent, over the many years and iterations of Violon. I am particularly impressed with the wine service - the staff was especially helpful in selecting complementary and well priced wines - not something typical in a Michelin starred restaurant in France or elsewhere. I booked here because I was looking for a nice evening out while visiting Paris, and with their English friendly website and online booking, I was sucked in. Sucker. We were seated in a friendly enough manner, then asked immediately and repeatedly for our order. We'd not even looked at the wine menu! It was as if they'd expected us to read ahead and have already made our menu choices before we even walked in the door. Our wine was a highlight, very nice, we ordered a bottle, which, when brought to us, my husband noted the year was incorrect, the sommelier (she was a breath of fresh air) brought us another bottle, an earlier year, and it was very good, possibly the best part of our meal. As our meal went along, my husband picked up the water bottle to pour, and the waiter wrestled it away from him, twice! If he didn't want us to refill, he should have filled it for us. The rudeness was horrible and appalling. We got the feeling that we were very unwelcome, and any enjoyment of our food was lost. Between us we each had one decent dish. I ordered a macaroni appetizer, the cheese was sour, no good flavor, and it was excessively large, while my husband enjoyed his seafood ravioli, which he found delicious. For the main, my husband ordered the Dory fish, which had an off odor and flavor, while my almond Seabass was light and really nice, but by then, I had lost my appetite and could not enjoy the food. We asked for the bill, they did not bring it, we asked again, they brought us an unasked for dessert, a lovely looking lacey almond cookie, that I normally would have enjoyed, but I had no appetite, and we left it untouched. The oppressive atmosphere and hostility of the staff made me want nothing but to get the hell out of there. Maybe that was their intention. We also had unwanted guests at our table, AKA the fruit flies. I thought there was only one, but noticed that when one landed on the rim of my glass, another was still cruising over the table. Ick. Amazing!!!! And puts the restaurants in NYC to shame. We got the truffled egg, foie gras, langoustine ravioli and chilean sea bass- and 3 glasses of wine a piece, and still came out with a reasonable bill of under 250 euros for two people! And the food and wines were amazing. The service was also immaculate, and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone! read more

Christian Constant is an amazing chef. Each time we visit Violin D"Ingress we are more and more thrilled with the meal, the service, the ambiance. I started with the soft boiled eggs. I know that doesn't sound glamorous but it is absolutely perfect. It doesn't get better than that. The main course was sweetbreads which were cooked perfectly. wine pairings were suggested and delightful. I jut can't say enough about this marvelous restaurant. Great restaurant. Great food. Friendly and professional staff. We went in not speaking a word of French but had a smile on our faces and a friendly attitude. Staff returned our friendliness. Not cheap. A full meal with dessert and after-dinner drink ran to nearly $150 per person, but it was a memorable meal. Highly recommended for a splurge (or an ordinary meal if you happen to be rich). It was my wife's birthday and she was happy. I walked away feeling it was money well spent. Also, portions were fairly large.
