Ate the regular buffet, not the seafood one. Although there was some seafood on the regular buffet. For instance, there was some sort of fried fish that I could not identify by taste. So I asked my waitress, and she said it was "swai fish". I had never heard of swai before, so I looked it up. Swai is imported from Vietnamese fish farms and tastes a lot like "mud-cat" (a trash fish frequently caught in a dirty ditch or muddy creek). Anyway, I can now say I tried swai and that it did not leave me with any ill effects that I know of. Nevertheless, I will never knowingly eat swai again. The crawfish pistolette was the high point as the cheese sauce and fried bread pair well but that's where it ends. I got the etouffee which lacked flavor unless you enjoy eating just roux. Typically the crawfish make the sauce taste of seafood with rich seasoning but not even hot sauce could save the day. This was quite the spot. The service was excellent and the food was awfully darn good. The oysters were huge and tasty. The batter was light and the spices of Louisiana were the perfect accent. So glad we tried this restaurant out. I was visiting home and wanting comfort food. The restaurant wasn't very busy and most people were eating from the buffet (which was a steal, by the way). We wanted menu items instead. Our waitress was a super sweet older lady. She was so attentive and just really pleasant to be around. I ordered a fried fish plate that came with a cheesy crawfish sauce (to die for) and a crawfish pistolette. That fish was fried so perfectly and was STEAMING hot--some of the best fish I've had at home--no kidding! The potato salad was not for me, but that's okay because the sauteed green beans were delicious. What had they been sitting in? Bacon grease? I really don't know, but I loved them. We looked at the buffet and decided it wasn't what we really wanted but it would have been a better value. Ordered Gator Bites and Pistolets for appetizer. Good but the nugget size Gator Bites ended up $1 each. The Pistolets were the size of a dinner roll and $4 each. That was the good part of the meal. Main course: Hubby had baked potato with crawfish etouffee that was thin (about the thickness of canned noodle soup). He said the taste was good but it was really soup. I ordered the fish poboy. The fish covered the bun lengthwise, but less than half the width. It was $14 without any side. I could barely taste the fish for all of the breading. Wow... Located in Sulphur, LA, right off of Interstate 10 (Exit 20), this unassuming restaurant / meat market is the real deal. The prices are very, very reasonable. They do have a lunch buffet but we decided to order off of the menu. The wife and I both had a cup of the Seafood & Crab Gumbo. The Gumbo is probably as authentic as you will find anywhere. We also shared a plate of Craw-fish Etouffee with onion rings and Boudin Balls. The Gumbo was good but the Craw-fish Etouffee was even better. One of my Aunts used to live in New Iberia and she would make us Etouffee when we were kids. This was as good as hers if not better. Wow.. The Boudin Balls were also quite good. In the same building, they have a meat market section, selling both refrigerated and frozen meats, in addition to 'Cracklins' as well as assorted roux and marinades. Cracklins, for those of you who don't know, are a Cajun/creole version of pork rinds. Much tastier than pork rinds though. The meat market also sells an assortment of marinated and Cajun stuffed meats. They also have a large assortment of sausages and Boudin to choose from. My husband got a shrimp corn Bisque-it was also delicious. We also ordered the crawfish pie and the pistolette from the appetizer menu- only 2.49 ea. This might be one of the worst reviews I have ever written. This was my first time to Louisiana and I wanted to try some Cajun/Creole. This place was next to my hotel, so it was easy and the reviews made it seem worth the effort. What is Boudin?! I'm from Ohio and have never heard of these balls. I must try. The place was busy. I was seated quickly. Good start. However, I was seated directly under a HVAC vent. The outside temp was 53° and it felt cooler where I was seated. Not to mention the breeze from the vent blew multiple wrappers off the table. I'm not joking! I tried to get a video but wasn't quick enough. I ordered a cup of chicken/andouille gumbo. It was cold, much like me sitting under the vent. The boudin ball. Eww. Not my thing. I also ordered the shrimp and fish platter with two sides. I chose the green beans and a salad as my side. The salad was inedible. They should have called it "Shredded cheese with limp lettuce garnish and choice of dressing." The tomatoes were rubbery. Hard to f- up a simple salad. I'd like to say the service was decent given the awful food experience but that was lacking too. I mentioned how cold I was more than once. I even stated that I had to put my coat on. I'm from Ohio folks, I know cold! It was 5° on Sunday. The real kicker on the service for me was when I noticed people getting up and going to get their food. I think to myself "Oh, there must be a buffet! Damn, no on told me about the buffet." Wouldn't a good server suggest the buffet? Especially to a customer that clearly announced this was their FIRST time to Louisiana looking to try creole? Isn't the point of a buffet to try everything? We have eaten this place many times. The food is not bad, not great. My husband and I had brought our kids to eat so we were a party of 7 plus4 of which got the buffet so there wasn't a whole lot done on the waitress part. We all received 1 refill on drinks. So upon getting our receipt we were astonished by the charges. First the 18% gratuity was a joke. Then right when we were leaving we noticed this 4% fee for using a credit card. This should have been mentioned before we paid. They have a very small sign on the door and one at the register which were not seen because the waitress takes our card and runs it while we are still at the table making it impossible to see these signs. The staff was rude and unprofessional and not caring when the fees were brought up. I will not be back. The waitress then states this is a statewide issue. So I m originally from Hawaii, never had any southern food and we came here for a particular reason, boudin - but they had none. So we hade the buffet and it had a variety of local favorites and I enjoyed what I ate. The waitress was exceptionally nice with that true southern hospitality. The food was delicious and I would recommend it if you have never tried southern cooking and want to try a little of everything. It advertises that it is "fine" dining. I ordered the crawfish bisque and couldn't eat more than 1/3 of it.
