Tyler R. (below me) is a good friend and had been trying to get me to come to this restaurant for weeks, but I wasn't super into going to a bowling alley during my lunch break, so I always made up an excuse. Today was different. With no real lunch plans under my belt, I decided to go try it out. This burger (specifically, the poblano burger) changed my life. The brioche bun was perfectly buttery and toasted, the burger patty was cooked to perfection, and the grilled onions and poblanos covered in pepperjack cheese made this burger one of the best (if not THE best) in Austin. The atmosphere was kooky enough to actually make me like this place even more. You could tell decades of fun had been had in this place and its visitors were loyal customers who had been coming there for years. People generally don't go to a bowling alley just to get food...and not bowl. That would be weird, right? It was a Sunday and I let boyfriend pick the dinner venue. Needless to say, we ended up at a fast food restaurant in a bowling alley. Again, no bowling took place. Lebowski's Grill is pretty much what you would expect. It's delectably greasy food with super friendly staff located inside of Highland Lanes. I ordered the patty melt, which I have to say, was pretty fantastic. Onions, cheese, and grilled beef patties atop toasty bread. What really set it apart though, was the garlic pepper spread. Next to Lebowski's Grill inside Highland Lanes is a little bar, so we were able to get some adult beverages with our bowling alley meal. Goodie. Boyfriend ordered chicken strips and cheesy tater tots. The cheesy tots have that, oh so familiar, state fair/movie theater/carnival/rodeo kind of yellow cheese sauce spread all over them. My brother said that the burgers at Lebowski's were getting awesome reviews, so we decided to try it out. I've got to say the cheeseburger I had was delicious. The bun wasn't your typical burger bun. My brother said it looked like a potato bun. It was great, slightly sweet, light and airy (like a cloud). The meat was well cooked, maybe a tad over salted. The service was Grade A+. The guy behind the counter was really friendly and didn't mind my questions. He even let me sample their housemade salsa and chips. The salsa, while not spicy (not even a little) was very tasty and the chips were the best I've had in a long time. The only drawbacks in my book were: no Coke products, (but they did have DP), the fries were not handcut, but were from a bag and a little over seasoned. According to the guys behind the counter, about 90% of the food they serve is made there, which is something I like to hear. I would go back again and try another of their offerings. Came here on rainy May day, looking for the "restaurant", I came in to find a window to order from. The bar aka seating, wasn't open yet but there were tables where you could watch the bowlers. (A generous offer was made to turn on the bar lights if I wished to sit in there, but decided to watch the bowlers instead.) My intention was to order a burger, but instead, I asked the cook, what he liked best. He recommended the Grilled Chicken Sandwich so I went that way, and was so glad that I did! One word describes the food at this joint. LEGIT. My usage of this word sky-rocketed since my visit here on Sunday. We were in the mood for a juicy burger in a divey but comfortable atmosphere and even though we were 4.5 miles away from this place, the reviews really spoke to us. We thought, "Hey, we're kinda in the mood to hang out in a bowling alley even though we have no plans to bowl!" First of all, the bread they use is better than any burger or sandwich bread I've had thus far in Austin. No joke. Didn't matter if it was the bread used for a philly cheese steak or a burger, they don't play around when it comes to bread. Actually, I regret not asking where they get their bread. I'll have to ask next time we go! As for everything in between, I really have nothing negative to say. Delicious meat, delicious sauce (that they must whip up on their own), crispy tots... For what it is, which is a bowling alley grill, Lebowski's Grill is as good as it gets. We're talking about hefty patties on a soft but stable, perfectly toasted bun. They've got fried pickles, tots, seasoned fries, and some specialty burgers lovingly named after the timeless cast in The Big Lebowski. And it's so good. This was a huge surprise. Never did I think a burger of this quality could come out of the counter at an old bowling alley. But it can, and it did, and you should really go get one. The breakfast sandwich with egg, bacon and cheese on grilled Texas toast is worth a trip here. The breakfast tacos are good too, but the sandwich rocks! We got a special treat on our latest visit when chef Dude (great cook = chef in my book) brought us out a complimentary cinnamon roll to try. He handed out about a half dozen to the bowlers. It was so good and the middle of it was gooey and hot. I credit that cinnamon roll and the resulting sugar high for the 212 game I bowled that morning, which is a career high for me. I also have to mention the fantastic chili and cheese tots, which are my favorite side dish. The Dude cooks a mean burger too. I heard about this place from several people so I decided to give it a try.... That was 6 months ago and I've been back there at least 10 times. Very underwhelming when you walk up to the counter... Then you find out the credentials of the head chef there and he makes you a burger. Be prepared for this. It will be one of the best you've ever had. All the cooks are very pleasant, and the food comes out fast. Not too greasy, which was a great surprise. I've had several of their burgers and every one has been top notch. I can't say enough. Was craving a burger and checked on Yelp and saw this place is only less then 10 minutes away from my house. So why not right? Got here and walked to the counter and was pretty hungry. Got me the Walter, fries, and Pepsi. Took my name down and sat at the bar and waited for my food. 10 minutes later food comes out nice and hot and I let it cool down and then took a bite of my fries and perfect. Good crispness to them and seasoning. The burger was huge and I was like wow may not finish it and have dinner. I was wrong took bite after after bite and by the time I realize it the burger was gone. The seasoning, portion size, not greasy at all. I mean just perfect. I went to eat here specifically due to Yelp reviews. This place can make a decent burger, and I love the devotion to the movie, the portions are huge. I had the "Walter" and couldn't finish it. The wife had the "Dude" she was just able to finish it. My daughter ordered the chicken club and it was a huge sandwich. My son ordered a bacon wrapped hot dog which he loved. If i was in the area I would likely look elsewhere for a bite to eat. But if I have been hammering down bowling pins and just as many beers this place would hit the spot! P.S. I love crazy weird hole in the wall places - much more than dining in the Domain or Downtown.. This place qualifies - if you want a beer early you have to go to shoe rental to buy one, ok quirky... I like it. I have been living in Austin nearly nine months now and I do believe that my quest for the perfect burger has come to a close. Let me tell you, friends, this burger will really tie your day together. You'll meet a lot of people that were military kids or missionary kids, but I grew up in bowling alleys. They are dark, they are loud, and if you go to one that's been around since before it became illegal to smoke everywhere, they smell like old cigarettes and cheap beer; but by God I love them and they tend to be bastions of tasty cheap food. My roommate, who is my co-pilot on our weekly food safaris, and I were desperate for a good burger, but from some place we had never gone before. One short skim through Yelp and it had been decided that we were going to the land of White Russians and wonderful profanity. Upon walking up to the counter, and a healthy convincing of my buddy as to why it's okay to eat in a bowling alley, I say to the gentleman manning the grill, 'Word is y'all make a good burger.' Without missing a beat and looking me dead in the eyes; he says, 'We have the best in town.' That was enough for me. I order the Walter, it's just as big as it's namesake, with tots and a Sweet Tea. Wilford Brimley status sweet tea, but it was perfect. We sat at the bar and between watching Law and Order and Shrek (they were on two tvs, but Law and Order and Shrek would be an amazing show) the door opens and two Mount Everests surrounded by tater tots walk through the door. The only question I ask myself is how the hell do I attack this thing? I finally found a suitable starting point to sink my teeth into, and I can tell you without a doubt that the burgersmith that made these towers of perfection is no liar. Now I am into the whole brevity thing, which is my reviews tend to be better written than those stupid essays I had to write in school. This burger was juicy, seasoned perfectly, and it had REAL BACON on it. Bacon that had texture. The bun was buttered and griddled which is the ONLY way to properly prepare a burger bun. The tots were crispy and had the right amount of salt. Even the queso was worth the trip alone. After polishing off this engineering marvel, I toss my plate away and give the most satisfied burger sigh that I've done in a very long time. The guy behind the counter even remarked that he didn't even have to ask how I liked it. The sigh was enough evidence. Not only is the burger on point but the people run it are just as passionate about their craft as any chef that would be manning a Michelin star restaurant. I got a Walter (a double of the standard lebowski burger with cheese) and my SO got the poblano burger. The buns were toasted and the patties were a respectable thickness with crispy edges. The poblano had a nice heat to it held inside the chipotle mayo sauce, and the Walter was all gooey melted cheese and just the right amount of juiciness. The tots were fresh and hot, with just the right amount of crunch, and the fries had a seasoning on it that was amazing. The price was right up our alley, and the taste hit a strike in our stomachs!
