Since Rice and Beans closed I've been looking for a new place to get tostones. I just might have found it here. I'm a fry snob, and tostones are my 'fries' at Latin restaurants. I finished eating, had leftovers, and had to resist ordering more tostones for the ride home. Speaking Spanish isn't necessary, but it definitely helps if it's your first time here. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. I had the pernil (roasted pork) combo which came with rice and a side. Much of the food sits out for you to see, but nothing has labels, so I went with my gut. The rice I chose had bits of fat in it which really enhanced the flavor. The pernil was good too. Nothing out of the ordinary - just good, standard pernil. But those tostones... I'm confident I'll be stopping here for tostones whenever I'm in the area. read more

I truly love this place. I visited the #5 restaurant for the first time a few days ago. I was surprised how much larger this location was, and they seemed to have everything Lechonera offers on the menu. Don't be scared away if you don't speak Spanish, the staff are very friendly and more than happy to help you out. We went around lunch time and it was pretty packed. All the food was super fresh and absolutely delicious. I had the Ropa Veija and it was so flavorful. It's possibly my new favorite. I also love the beef stew. The restaurant does have seating, but when it's busy it gets pretty tight. Definitely give it a try! read more

I was in the mood for some mangu with salami and queso of course my husband made it happen. We pass this deli/restaurant a lot and omg I loved the fact that the food was fresh. As a fellow New Yorker this is the closest food to deli Dominican food from where I'm from. The food wasn't greasy which was very nice! The flan was so tasty not to sweet or sugary. I can't believe how many times I've passed by this awesome spot, not realizing how great the food is! Friends have been raving about the quality & quantity of their combos, and I wish I had listened sooner. Meals seem to be in the $10-$15 range, but their portions are HUGE - I could barely close the container at first. Instead of just one, the staff were kind enough to let me choose two entrees for no extra cost to try both the Ropa Vieja and Pernil Asado on top of yellow rice and a side of plantains - it was only $12! I'm not usually a fan of pulled pork, but the marinade and cook was just perfect! Everything overall tasted fresh and was served hot. Even though it looks small on the outside, there's actually a notable amount of inside seating. There are plenty of comfy blue booths that fit 4-6 people lining the back wall. It also seemed like most of the orders were takeout, so it never got too crowded while we were there. I loved how friendly and quick the service was, and the staff didn't seem at all bothered by my endless questions about the options on the menu. On a mini side note, there's a box where you can enter for a massive cruise discount by the door. My friend entered and won recently, so you just never know! I wouldn't come back but i will leave a review. I had come in yesterday night because I have been to the other location on McCoy road. I had asked for carne asada which is Steak. When she gave me the food I didn't get to see it till I was in the car. She had served me pulled pork. I have a pork allergy and as I walked back to the store to see if I can get it fixed the shorter lady had given me an attitude and was looking at me like I did something to her. She was telling me that Carne asada in her country is pork but she should have specified that before serving it which she didn't. After I switched my food for actual steak she still continued to charge me additional money after the food I had paid for. I didn't have a good experience and would recommend this place to anyone I continue to drive the extra 40 min to McCoy instead of this location. read more

If you are looking for a quick and convenient (not to mention delicious) meal, check this place out. They specialize in Puerto Rican and Cuban dishes and the prices are excellent. I've been a few times when I'm in a rush and just do not feel like cooking. For between 6-7 bucks you can get a styrofoam container packed to the brim with food. They give you so much food that you will definitely be eating off of it the next day also. I highly recommend the Lechon Asado (Roasted Pork) and the Arroz con Gandules (Rice with Pigeon Peas). Try their Ceviche - a mix of different seafood and vegetables marinated in lemon juice and spices. It is in a word... heavenly! The dishes seem to pretty much be the same everytime I go. Not a bad lil spot for some quick Latin food. Checked out this joint while in the area running errands and decided to grab a plate to share with the wifey for lunch. It's a basic line set up you pick a protein and a couple sides. I chose to split my my protein between the pulled pork and jerk chicken with a side of black bean/rice as well as sweet plantains. The food was all seasoned well tasted good. Nothing was dry or bland. The portions are huge plenty for my wife and I to share and be satisfied and the price is right with a water for bout 8$. The girl who took my order noticed that it was broken and said that if I wanted another one it would take 10 minutes to make (there were no more in the case). I didn't mind the wait. I paid for my food and left. Fast-forward about 20 minutes later, I go back to get another one (my sister ate my original one so I figured it wouldn't be too much to drive back and get another) The guy who placed my order told me that they don't have any and that the person who makes them must not have dropped them off. Many people have been telling me to try this place and I always pass by the other location. I went on my day off on a Wednesday right before noon it was busy but you can be in and out in a jiffy!! It was my first time here so I wasn't sure what to get so I kept letting people go in front of me. Lots of people got their orders to go but we sat down. I ordered Pernil Asado with Paella. Also got empanada de carne! We also ordered Pepper Steak with Arroz con gandules. They give you so much fooooooood! Boo, you could eat leftovers for the following 2 days!!!! Chicharron is sooooooo crunchy I love love love! The only thing I was upset about was they didn't have Tres Leches, I went around 1pm and thought they would have them out for lunch time! Went on a Wednesday and when we walked in it wasn't too busy but after we got our food and sat down soooo many people started walking in for their lunch. Honestly LOVE LOVE LOVE eating here. I get the best food when I eat at this location. Although there is two locations I HIGHLY do not recommend the Lechonera located off of Dean Road. The at the location off of Dean Rd is always greasy, sloppy and either too much salt or too little seasoning. This location is too preference, the employees are quick and welcoming always serving big platters and you definitely get your money's worth! This place is great for what it is, a no frills Dominican style eatery that is ALL about the FOOD! I am hooked on the Pernill(pork shoulder) because it has both tender juicy pieces of pork AND that nice crunchy crispy skin and meat. mmmmmm. Just thinking about it makes me hungry. Yum Yum Yum Yum, thats 4 Yums for 4 stars, this place is G double O D good. I ate here with my sister for lunch the other day, we were on a mission to find a great latin american restaurant in the union park/university area and we wanted to try somewhere new. So we hopped on the good old yelp wagon and started searching, there were a few places that popped up, but the reviews and the food sounded so good that we decided to go for it. Yes there are two of these restaurants in the same area, we went to #2 and it says so on the sign, if your ever near that wal mart on 50 then you are basically within walking distance to this place. On the outside it looks like a kitchy plaza, fairly new, nice facade, but when you get inside the door, your taken to south america almost instantly. It has that other america feel and its bouncing with patrons most of whom are hispanic of some culture or another. You walk right up to the counter/display case where you can see most of the dishes simmering there waiting to get scooped onto your plate, you can see the chickens turning the big rotisserie and it smells so good. This place is no 5 star lunch, but it does scream good food. They serve you fast, no waiting for your food, if you order something they have to go out back and kill, but for the most part everything is right there. I ordered the Pollo w/Congri and Plaintains. It was so delicious, they gave me a whole 1/4 chicken, and my sister ordered the Pernil(pork shoulder) with Grandules (pigeon peas and rice) with tostones. The chicken was moist and seasoned, not spicy but perfect and the congri was perfectly mixed black beans and rice, the plaintains were perfectly ripe, and sweet and salty. The pernil was moist and soft, great flavor and not much fat or gristle, It looked like some savory southern style barbecue but with their special seasonings. The tostones were so perfect, crunchy a good size and sweetness was mild, they were so perfectly fried and soft in the middle. We both cleaned up every last bit of our little white take out boxes, nothing to leave behind but some chicken bones. We ended up paying like $17 bux for the two lunches and 2 drinks, the only thing we both would have liked would have been some roasted onions in the pork or with the chicken, and we didnt get any, but after I ate I checked the display and they did have them further down simmering in some sort of sauce, im sure it would not have cost any extra. Worth the wait! There are two locations here. One across from Walmart and one on the corner of Dean and 50. The food here is always amazing. Went today, this store is pretty clean and nice as is this newer plaza. I had the Pernil($7) which is just shredded pork, it's typically cooked with lots of salt, garlic and sour orange sauce though you wouldn't know any of this visually from the final product. It makes the pork taste so good! The Pernil here is really good, I had it with the Orange Rice that had beans in it. The Sweet Plantains were good as well. They have Louisiana Hot sauce on the tables, I find that a lot of Latin places don't serve latin bottled hot sauces which I still don't understand why. They serve tap water.
