Continuing on the road trip, wanting to try something different and NOT fast food, we stumbled upon Lee's. The food was really good and completely unexpected. Off the beaten path, but definitely popular among locals. Employees were friendly and knew many of the guests that came in by name and even asked how we had found the place. Great alternative to fast food. Perfect road trip stop. Grinders, fresh cut fries, menudo, kids menu, no barbeque. No reason to eat anywhere else while traveling through Trinidad. A few reviews have mentioned not having the Bar-B-Q at the restaurant. If you go to a backyard Bar-B-Q at someones house do they always have it? No it's mostly burgers, dogs, potato salad, etc. The only downside, this restaurant is closed on Sunday. Come on most people are off on the weekends. I have eaten at this restaurant many times over the years. Although some items have changed, the GodFather!, they still deliver the same quality of food. It really sends me back to before my time with the decor, history, and friendly home-town style environment. To an outsider(me) it seems to be the town local's water cooler. first of all, the "bar-b q" is misleading. Lee's is not a barbecue joint, its an old school diner. Order a Chile(yes its spelled this way here easternersand its pronounced chee-lay)burger, chile fries, or a big brother. I grew up in Trinidad, and as a local i can tell you that the only things us natives order are one of the three. a chile burger is a toasted bun, a hamburger patty, french fries and cheddar cheese smothered in colorado/new mexico green chile (essentialy pork gravy with roasted green chile peppers, garlic,and comino) or Red chile ( a beef version with dried NM chile). Chile fries are the same thing minus the burger. A "Big Brother"is 2 hamburger patties on a vienna/french roll with pickles cheese and grilled onions with special sauce(basically a puree of tomatoes, pickles, and onions). "chile burger" is a local term. The same thing minus the fries is called a "slopper" in Pueblo, CO where I live. read more

I'm totally biased, and for a reason. I grew up near Lee's and I have the best memories of Barbara L. and their family...and of course their food. I moved away for 25-30 years, and so very happy to come back and see that Mike M. and his family have continued on with a great tradition. No better green-chili fries and burgers. Some good improvements too. The sausage sandwich is excellent, and my favorite. I go every time I'm in town. I have had opportunity to share this information with several friends from around USA, UK, Netherlands, Norway and Canada as they travel through the area....and all have raved about the food and how friendly everyone is at restaurant. This place is a hidden gem! We stopped here on a road trip back to Houston from Lake City, CO. We were looking for places that had gluten free options and they didn't disappoint. They don't have a separate menu, but the staff is knowledgeable. My husband had the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw, my kids had the hamburger and I had the BLT on a gluten free bun. Although the locals rave upon this place, I cannot understand why!! BBQ? The only BBQ item I could find was a simple BBQ beef sandwich and it was almost inedible...Dairy Queen makes a better BBQ sandwich!! The menu is riddled with chili dishes ala Tejas. Now I'm from New Mexico and red chile doesn't taste anything like this. The place looks like it's falling apart at the seam...drive-in style dining at it's worst. Wait staf were disenchanted and when asked where the pulled pork, brisket were I got the 'death stare' and an attitude. I was then advised to try out there famous chili fries...never again. Thank GOD for anti-nausea medication or I would have never made it back to Raton without getting ill. Honestly, best chile-fries in town. However, it is overpriced for not a lot of wow. We ordered a sandwich to share. The sandwich did not come with fries, had to order those separately. The sandwich consisted of two mini-sandwiches about the size of a slider, and at over $7, it was just not what we had wanted. Also, only two items on the menu have BBQ attatched. I had been hoping for some good home cooked BBQ. I guess I'll have to wait 'till I get back to TX. read more

You either love Lee's or hate it. I love it. I love the chili fries, chili burgers, french dip, chicken supreme dipped in ranch dressing, egg chili and cheese, and the milk shakes are the best in town!!! And the french fries are fresh, not frozen and the best! Fast service and food, usually in 10 min or less instead of taking an hour to eat somewhere when you are pressed for time and don't want traditional "fast food." Over the years it seems the hamburgers have gotten smaller while the price went up but it seems that is the trend now a days with the economy. read more

We stopped at this place while we were in town for my daughters college basketball tournament for the weekend. Looked up great BBQ places and this was the only thing that popped up. So we went in and the young lady that served us was awesome!!!! But this is not a BBQ joint at all!! What made us walk out and leave this place was the grill cook was just making all the food with no gloves on. He patted out the hamburger meat and placed it on the grill and turned around with the same red raw meat bacteria on his hands and started breaking up the lettuce and cutting the tomatoes. Disgusting and not very sanitized!! We got up and cancelled our order and said we will never eat at this place again. FYI make sure the cook Is wearing cloves. read more

the only good thing here is the chili fries. the burgers are SMALL. you're better off to hit up the dollar menu at McDonalds rather than pay $4 something for a burger that doesn't even include fries. The hamburger patties are tiny, definitely not worth the price. read more
