I tried the applewood smoked bacon sandwich with a side of tomato soup--the sandwich was a little on the sweeter side from the apple butter which overshadowed the gorgonzola in my opinion but still a good sandwich! The tomato soup topped with pesto was amazing!! I also tried the roasted turkey sandwich which was excellent, and the side of chips is the perfect crunchy accompaniment to any of their hot pressed sammies. I've been going into this place off and on for the last 7 months. Never once did I have a problem or an issue. And I've always enjoyed myself. 2/19 was a different story. I got there about 2:30p and settled in with a good beer and good music and a good bartender and some good customers. Closed out my tab at shift change and was sipping the last few sips of my beer when the night time bartender copped an attitude. He already did not look happy to be there. I was playing a backgammon online game and was being a little vocal with who I was playing with. Instead of asking me to quiet down a little, he told me I was being disruptive, told me I had to leave, and grabbed what little was left in my beer off the counter and told me to get out. I had never met him before and I don't even know his name. I asked him what was wrong and he ignored me and again told me to get out. So I left. Has anyone else experienced this! Stopped by here with some others after the community cleanup this past weekend. The whiskey/ginger/lemon boozy popsicle was perfect after walking ~5000 steps on a warm day. I expected the bruschetta to come pre-spread on 1-3 large slices of toast, but it came out with many small toasts and toppings as a side so I could do it myself! That definitely makes it better for sharing. I like to overload my bruschetta so I felt like $4 per topping, in the size provided, was a little pricey. But it was tasty so I'd probably get it again just with a more intentional toppings choice. The large L-shaped patio out back is a secret bonus, and there are some street patio tables too. Friendly staff helped me decide what to get when I felt indecisive. Overall, a solid option! read more

From the outside this place looks very unassuming; we weren't sure they're open judging by how quite things were. However, stepping inside, I was immediately a fan of the laid back yet classy vibe this place has. Great bar design and set up of high stool seatings as well as outdoor area. The person at the bar greeted us super friendlily. We got a Hot Pressed Sandwich each, mine was the Tuna Salad with Tomato Bisque soup substitute, and split a pint of Sour Cherry Cider. The salad was delicious! Crusty on the outside and filled with spicy tuna salad and pecoroncinis, adding an extra kick to the whole thing. Never had spicy tuna salad before but I'm a fan! The Tomato Bisque was very creamy and flavorful. They gave you a relatively small cup but that was more than plenty, great with the sandwiches of course. I like the touch of pesto on top as well. Prices were extremely reasonable, with nothing really going over the $10 mark. There was also a nice outdoor patio that we sat at. I didn't drink here so I can only speak to the food. As far as bar food goes this was pretty darn good. This was probably the best tomato soup I've ever had, and adorable presentation! Went in lastnight with friends- it was a busy night because it was Tuesday Trivia. Because I am a bartender and I also frequent bars and I'm not an asshole, I asked for a hot water and whiskey (instead of a hot toddy because those are a pain to make when you're hustling). Our bartender, Gina (long white hair) was instantly put off and rude. I watched her pour an 8 oz glass nearly to the top with hot water and then walk over and pour a 2 second pour of Jameson into the water. It tasted like water and the whiskey was undetectable. In an 8 ounce mug you should be able to taste a shot of whiskey. I had everyone at the table try it and they agreed I should say something. I went back up and asked her how much they pour for a typical shot- she said "uh one and a half ounces" and I said "I'm really sorry but this honestly is just water. Can you taste it?" She literally said "I'm not tasting your drink. that's the drink you ordered, what do you want me to do about it? You can pay for another shot or deal with it. I didn't make you order that drink." And then walked away and ignored me. My friend later walked up and just ordered me a shot of Jameson (which looked like a proper 1.5 ounce pour), and when she closed out, Gina tried to charge her for a double shot of Jameson. My friend said something about it and Gina said, "I'm sure you ordered a double" and my friend was like "absolutely I did not please take one off my tab" and after being super huffy to my friend, she did. What is this Jameson conspiracy? Is she barely pouring them and trying to pull the wool over our eyes because she's drinking it herself? Is she charging double so she can put one on deck for herself? And hoping no one confronts her? And gaslighting them when they do? It's seriously so sketchy. I ALWAYS remake a drink for a customer if they're dissatisfied, I've never once told them to "deal with it". Even if they are rude to me- which I truly wasn't. We all tipped well (because again, we all work in service in Portland and we don't want to bring that bad tip karma) and left after trivia but she honestly didn't earn it. Here's why it's such a bummer: we live down the street and we come in all the time. Every other bartender has always been warm and kind, most of them remember us and I order hot water and whiskey through most of the winter. It's always great and the other gal who works there (a little shorter, tattooed and sweet) always tells me it's no trouble if I want to get a hot toddy or a warm drink. I'm just so conditioned to being a good bar patron I don't want to put anyone through that. (It takes a good seven minutes to make a hot toddy at the bar I work at, the hot water is across the restaurant). I'm sure we'll come back but if Gina is there, we'll walk down the street to one of the other seven bars in St. John's. Seems like everyone else in the yelp comments pretty much agrees with her service style being awful and how rude she is- Dear leisure pub, I've been in the industry for ten years in Portland and I know a lot of talented, kind bartenders if you want to fire her and hire someone who won't negatively affect business, contact me. read more

Went in last night with a group of friends looked like a cute little bar and had great reviews. Ordered a pink martini (beet infused vodka) and it was delicious. The tattooed female bartender was super nice and very upbeat. Went back for a second round for me and my boyfriend and how dare I ask if they had hot food. We were sitting outside where it was cold and I just wanted hot soup or something of the sort. A different female bartender with white hair was as rude as they come. When I asked if they had hot food she instantly got an attitude. Not sure why that was a hard or unreasonable question. When I told her I just wanted something hot like soup because it was cold she tossed a menu at me and said very rudely. Umm I bet you can probably find hot on here and walked away to make our drinks. (Don't mind the extreme eye roll that came along with it). We decided to not order food with the attitude that we got. We finished our second round and left. Will never come back and would never recommend this place of that's the normal type of service you get. Absolutely appalling. Only giving a two star because the first bartender was nice but sadly the second ruined our experience. read more

I should get punched in the eye with an over sized fist for ever giving this place a 4. I was naive then, I have grown. For the last 2 years, Leisure has delivered exceptionally. Since moving in to the hood, I have had business talks here, my bachelorette party, unrecallable crunken moments that I would rather not talk about. Their turkey pesto sandwich still remains my favorite and I always love it when it's made by the mom: A spunky, little lady who makes sure to scrawl a giant, pesto "L" in my tomato soup. I am sure it stands for Leisure but in my head I like to pretend it stands for Lori. Their bathroom chalkboards, the cat who is always too drunk to sit on my lap and their lovely, bearded, servers are all extra reasons to love this place. A friend of mine lives nearby and is a regular here, so when she suggested we grab a drink and snack on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, I was game. I had a couple drinks -- the gingery one on the specialty menu was a flop, so I switched to a standard. We each also had the tomato soup and three miniature grilled cheese sandwiches. What a treat! The soup came with a swirl of pesto, and the mini sandwiches begged to be dunked in the creamy tomato liquid. The drink was as expensive as the soup-and-sandwich plate -- each was $7. We sat and chatted for a couple hours and even though it was my first time in, I felt like it was my neighborhood place, too. I hope to go back soon. read more

After visiting here now after about 5 times. It is safe to say that, Leisure is a solid 4+ restaurant. On this particular trip I sampled the: Cheese plate Hummus plate Applewood smoked bacon panini The hummus was tasty and had perfect texture, The cheese plate had a delightful choice of cow, goat and sheep cheese. The panini had good crunch and perfect mix of Gorgonzola, apple butter and smoky bacon. This review is making me really hungry right now. The service is spot on and the house cat is friendly. My favorite item on the menu however is the grilled cheese sandwiches and pesto tomato soup. It is a must try for the newbie here. Well, maybe not car bombs, but at any point in time you could travel over to the "six-points" intersection, buy yourself a Slurpee from the 7/11, and watch half of the Multnomah Police Department wrestling down a drunk, naked man. If you timed it right, bullets might fly and you'd have yourself a full-length feature. Then along comes Leisure. Clean, no Keno machines, the bartenders have teeth, no "Don't Tread on Me" flags on the wall.....life suddenly became good for us St. Johnsians. If you transplanted Leisure into the Mississippi or Hawthorne district, you might mistake it for another hipster bar, but the fact that it's in St. Johns, born and bred, gives it soul.
