Every month has a theme, and this one drew inspiration from the movie Warriors, so young hot things were dancing around, scantily clad in furs sporting bedroom eyes. By the time I stumbled out onto SOMA's gritty sidewalk, I felt thoroughly worked over from the evening's festivities, including a fashion show and a whole lotta dancing. I suppose it's not surprising I fell in love with these people. Let us all dress in costume and drag every day!

BOUNCER, REMOVE HER" out loud on the mic and I was so confused. Of course, I was a bit tipsy and confused. The bouncer was so aggressive and they wouldn't explain WHY I was getting kicked out. The bouncer threatened to call the cops on me and his body language was terrifying. He was blocking me with his whole body when I tried to walk to the bathroom and at the point, customers were hanging up on me too because of the scene he was causing. I am a calm and reasonable person, there was no need for the staff to be so rude. It was really scary and disappointing. I hope the staff gets proper training in de-escalation because they escalated the hell out of a nothing-situation.

Jeffrey created all of the visuals for the theme, connected me with a decorator, and even arranged for his DJ and bartender to come early for my party. (This saved me hours of searching for outside vendors!) Before the food arrived, we enjoyed the roof open, which was gorgeous. Since the restaurant downstairs isn't open yet, I used City Smokehouse for catering, and the setup and cleanup were effortless. I didn't even anticipate needing a storage area, but the staff (Chadwick) handled everything they even loaded my car at the end of the night! The bartender Daniel was gorgeous (no other word for it!) and the drinks were SO reasonably priced. From the first email to the last goodbye, the entire team made me feel like family and brought the spirit of my 40th birthday to life. It's worth mentioning that The Café recently entered a new chapter under co-owners Louis and Jeffrey. Louis has been with The Café since 1992, starting as a floor person, then barback, bartender, and eventually general manager for over two decades. Their vision is to honor nearly 50 years of history while bringing new life to the space. When the club opened to the public after my event, it was incredible to see such a diverse crowd. Young and old, friend groups, all genders, everyone just in community with each other. I can't recommend this venue enough for private parties or corporate events. Jeff and Louis do so much for the community and are absolute pillars of hope and strength in the Castro. We would especially make sure to make a stop here during Pride day. The drinks and music are still as great as I remembered. Cynthia makes the best drinks! My friend and I intended to stay an hour but ended up staying until 1am watching the dancers, drinking at the bar and just enjoying the atmosphere. The Cafe is one of those places where you plan to stay for a bit but end up staying much longer bc the vibes here are just so much fun! The crowd here is really friendly and you could tell everyone goes here to just have a great time. It's a welcoming place for everyone. But its doors shuttered in 2020 at the height of the pandemic. Now it's back relocated to the space that I fondly remember as Julie's Supper Club. It's still a good size space with multiple rooms, a second bar, and a patio. I came by early in the evening during their soft opening phase. There wasn't any prominent signage, and I just walked in to see just a handful of customers at the bar. A few people were singing karaoke when we got here. I ended up drinking Jameson basically the whole night and my friend started with a Gimlet. The bartender was sooo sweet. We had a wonderful time just catching up while she was serving us. As the night progressed, another friend joined and we started doing karaoke! I believe we did a bunch of old Chinese songs since the only people left at the end of the night were more or less familiar with our choices. Very fun bar! And they play really good music. Kinda late 90s / early 2000 hip hop and r&b. Definitely my jam!
