Although I've driven past Lemon Tree countless times, it was only recently that I found myself there for a meal. On this occasion it was an office lunch on a weekday afternoon that brought me here. I wonder now why I never tried it before because it was magnificent. The Lemon Tree is all you would want in casual Mediterranean cuisine - quality meats, fresh vegetables and toppings, and delicious sauces. The Chicken Schwarma was excellent and I was impressed with the quality and flavor of all of the ingredients. The only thing that was somewhat disappointing was the pita bread that came with the meal which was dry and bland tasting like cardboard. On the whole the dining experience wasn't necessarily anything to write home about. The facility and atmosphere was clean but character-less which is not surprising being located in a strip mall. And it would have been nice to dine on something other than paper plates. I did though appreciate the Chipotle-style ordering where you proceeded through steps adding types of ingredients as you go. It kept the options diverse but simple. I wavered between giving 4 and 5 stars, but it ultimately lost a bit due to the so-so experience. Regardless, Lemon Tree is definitely on my short list of regular local restaurants. read more

We visited Lemon Tree on a drive up from Chicago to Michigan. Here's the breakdown: - We decided to try this place out because we wanted something different than the normal McDonald's or Burger King for our road trip pit stop. It's right across the street from the A&W/KFC building. - The food was good! We'd give that 3-4 stars. For a fast food Mediterranean place, it didn't disappoint. We shared a big bowl of chicken shawarma. They were out of the lemon chicken soup, so that was disappointing, but we had the hummus and tabouli for our sides. Hummus was very good! - The service was a 2 star rating, which is why this review evens out to 3 stars. The staff wasn't rude, but the customer service wasn't great. We stopped on a Saturday afternoon, and the service was pretty slow. For a place competing with national chains all around them, it would do them good to beef up their service. If that part improved, they could be a great place. Overall, we will stop here again on another trip and give them another try. The food was a refreshing choice that you normally don't see on road trips. read more

Some very good Vegan options here. They make a special Vegan rice, make sure to ask! I ordered a rice bowl, and split the protein, falafel and grilled veggies, fantastic! I love Mediterranean food and try and find a new place every time I travel. This is absolutely one of the best Mediterranean restaurants I've ever eaten at. Period. I went to Lemon Tree today with my 11 yr old and my mom. My daughter got beef, 4 small scoops of rice, a pita and a fountain drink. My mom and I each got a hot tea. The woman told me it came to $20! I said, "$20??? Really for that???" I wish I would have taken a picture. Maybe 10 very small pieces of beef, a cup of rice, a pita and 3 beverages - $20. She replied, "well, if you don't value high quality food, you can always go to McDonalds." I try to eat "clean", I do value high quality food and that little bit of it was not in any way worth $20. My daughter didn't want sides or add-ins but we were still charged for a "large steak bowl". And the hot tea is, according to the staff, expensive because of the quality of the tea bags. Traveling through Chesterton and after a long day, looking forward to a good meal. The Lemon Tree portions for myself and kids were so small, you'd swear they were samples (I ordered the large!). The food must have been mass produced offsite and then brought to the store (except maybe the grilled chicken). The pita bread was store bought and terrible. I honestly expected a lot more in terms of quantity and quality for ~$33.00 for 4 people. I've had authentic Mediterranean food in the Detroit area and this was not close. Won't be eating there again and there are probably better options around. read more

Poor ordering process. So disappointed I was placed on hold and left more than 10 minutes. Couldn't get thru again with more than 15 attempts. I just had Lemon Tree cater our 50 th wedding anniversary party. They sent two servers , Jordan and Alyssa, who totally took care of all the food and drink for the 70-person six hour event. The food was wonderful and they brought chafing dishes to ensure that everything stayed hot. I just can't say enough about how wonderful these two young women were. We had another source of food as well and they laid it out for our guests just as if it were Lemon Tree's food. They kept the bars stocked with wine and cleaned everything up at the end. They were also lovely and funny. In other words, they were perfect. read more

My boyfriend and I found this place while camping at the dunes. We actually had breakfast at Third Coast Spice that morning (see separate review!) and were interested to try the sister restaurant. It was awesome. Incredible vegan options and clarity on ingredients. I got falafel on a pita with vegan rice, hummus, tabbouleh, tomato, red onion, kalamata olives, and mediterranean dressing. I added the lentil soup for $1 extra. It was okay, but the pita was awesome! With the house-made chips included, I feel like I got my money worth. This is probably the worse Mediterranean food me and my husband have ever eaten. I ordered the salad, they gave me lettuce that had edges of brown, the tabouli had pieces of ice. It gets better, my husband orders the so called "Feast" for $14.95 which comes on the same size container as my $8 salad. How can that be? The food here is not fresh at all. First meal at this restaurant... delicious! Quick and healthy with vegetarian and vegan options, too. The previous reviewer was correct in stating that it's set up a lot like Chipotle in that you choose your type of meal and then move on down the line to choose your topping/side options. The service was good and the food was even better... I chose a falafel bowl with a side of cabbage salad and lentil soup. The falafel was so good (and I'm kind of picky about it)--golden crispy on the outside and moist and perfectly seasoned on the inside. Cabbage salad was tasty but I probably won't get the lentil soup again--the flavor was good but I didn't care for the blended texture of it, just my personal preference. Can't wait to try the chicken shwarma (set up on a spit right there) next time! I live about 15- 20 minutes away but will be making an effort in the future to eat here. Cost of a decent sized bowl of falafel with tahini sauce and toppings, seasoned rice, pita bread, side of purple cabbage salad and cup of lentil soup was just over $10. Pita sandwiches run around $7 - $8. Very filling and light, fresh but fast. Tons of different options and combinations available, from seasoned steak to grilled veg, tahini to spicy yogurt sauce. read more

It seems like this place is going downhill. I've been coming here since it opened and at first, was super impressed. Now it's just meh. Came in for lunch at 12:30, there was no chicken shawarma ready. Why is that? The salads are now served on paper plates? They used to be served in some sort of bowl which was much better. They also used to have chopped olives and this past time they were whole kalamata. Not as good on the salad in my opinion. It seems like your staff needs to be better trained. Last few times I've been in the girls seem like they don't really know what's going on. But here's what really bothered me: girl took our money with the gloves she used to make our food, got us change with same gloves on, then proceeded to go back to the next customer and start making their food. WITH THE DIRTY GLOVES STILL ON. Unsanitary practice. Health code violation. I think this place could be much better, hopefully they read this and take notice. read more

The food was good and fresh but prices were really high and not enough meat for price, I got the large plate with half spicy shrimp and chicken shawarma only two tiny pieces of chicken. I will travel into Michigan city to chickpeas awesome food, large amount of food for good price. Also charged 1.00 extra for a pinch of feta. I left feeling taken advantage of for paying 28.00 for 1 small plate and 1 large and two drinks. I've paid less for table service and adult beverages included and a tip. I won't return. read more

This has been one of our favorite places in the area. The food is usually fresh and very tasty, and the place is sorta hip for Chesterton. The problem is that they nickel and dime you to death, and tonight was the last straw. I spent $20 on two Constantinople sandwiches and one bowl of soup that was on special for $1. The sandwiches (in a pita) no longer come with rice (first bummer), then we each got a tiny scoop of chicken from the bottom of the warming tray (second bummer), then we added rice to one of the sandwiches but were not informed that we would be up-charged $2 (third bummer). My son got a gluten free pita which is great, but always costs another $2. Not sure why, maybe to compensate for the lack of chicken and rice, we got extra purple cabbage that made the sandwich taste bad and actually bled through the pita which made my sandwich fall apart. Oh, and my pita was not heated up so it was cold. To top it off, the chips that came with the sandwich were burnt and tasted like crap. Lately when we come here we have one issue or another but tonight there were many issues, so much so that we won't be going back. It's a shame because there is nothing like this in our area. The falafel balls rate a 5. Other dishes I have had there a bit less. Not because it is bad food, but because to my mind they haven't really nailed the flavors and scents of this genre. The falafel has no gluten ingredients! And it is mixed on site from actual ingredients. The staff brought me the book full of recipies they use for making the felafel. No kidding! Update: I discovered Lemon Tree has gluten-free pita also. Just ask for it. read more

In an area where fast food is synonymous with grease, Lemon Tree is a welcome change. It's set up like chipotle but Mediterranean style-- pick your style (rice, pita, or salad), your protein, your sides, and your condiments. My husband and I picked up food to go and were very happy with everything we got! I got the Fruitful life falafel and hubs got the chicken shawarma dish. Both were huge and delicious. Lemon Tree has turned into one of my favorite spots to grab lunch when I'm in the area. I know I am getting a healthier option for a to-go lunch. I usually get a bowl with chicken shwarma, hummus and tabouleh. I like to get the spicy yogurt on the side. There have also been days when I just went to get a snack and grabbed some hummus. Very tasty. My only complaint is that their portion sizes aren't consistent. It really depends on who makes your bowl. read more

A big fan of Mediterranean food, I was excited to see Lemon Tree open up in my hometown. In the few weeks it's been opened, I've been delighted to go there perhaps ten times for my favorite, the moist falafel that's bursting with flavor. For a quick meal, I've just gotten the falafel by itself with a side of hummus; but for a more filling meal, the falafel wrap is a filling meal at a reasonable price. The prices of the items I've enjoyed are much more reasonable than the places where I've had falafel at in Michigan City and Valparaiso, making it easy to want to go back time and time again. Their hummus is particularly memorable and they make their own chips, which are light and crunchy without being greasy. I wish I could make ice tea like they do...it's a special flavor I haven't experienced before..a real treat for the taste buds. This is the third restaurant that has been housed in the storefront since Subway moved to a larger facility, and it's by far the best. Lemon Tree, owned by the same people who own Third Coast Spice Cafe, is a real blessing to the community and it deserves the patronage of everyone who wants something different from the typical chain restaurant fare that inhabits much of Indian Boundary, just off Route 49 from I-94. read more
