I'm wondering if some of the bad reviews here are mistakenly taking Lemon Grass for the really icky, greasy place next door to it, which is easy to walk into by accident. Lemon Grass has some dishes that are so good, in that wonderful fresh, flavorful, comfort food way, that I literally hunger for them when I'm not in Hawaii. These include any of their Eggplant dishes, any of their Chow Fun dishes, and frankly, everything else I and my family have had here has been excellent too - no complaints. The service is ULTRA fast - wonderful when you and maybe your kids are really hungry, maybe even getting a little grouchy. You order and WHOMP - there it is. There's no wine or beer but bring your own, no "corkage" fee, they'll bring you cups. This is like eating in your own kitchen if you could be served automatically anything you were in the mood for. Casual and yummy. And if you are anywhere in the Puna area, it is a LOT closer than anything in Hilo! read more

Im a coffee snob, living on the island where real Kona coffee is grown in abundance. If youve never tried Vietnamese coffee and you like a strong cup of Joe...this is a must. It'll satisfy the hardcore coffee hounds. this is not Starbucks- its heavy Coffee Bean straight on. I adore it, and its a great treat to pick me up and get me over the mid afternoon slump. Im a none to light lunch eater. i've tried a handful of the dishes they serve, and its always way generous on the helpings. I usually say "thanks...stop....that's enough!"..The Fired Rice is great, the eggplant and tofu excellent, and they have many choices of chicken, veggie, beef, and shrimp dishes fresh with optional numbers of options (2 dishes, 3, 4, etc).. The server was not friendly, and food lacked any genuine flavor. I ended up over loading the food with sauce from the table to get through the meal. This is no JOKE ! If you are looking to get a very high level of MSG poisoning this is the spot to get it ! My husband and I had dinner there , Salt n pepper ribs, combination fried rice , beef tofu and volcano shrimp ! 10 mins after leaving my husbands eyes swelled shut like I've never seen before . His breathing got short and was having heart palpitations. Went to the Emergency room and explained we had just had dinner . They tested for levels of MSG and it was off the charts ! Food is ok, customer service definitely is lacking, they just are who they are lol. Not many affordable options for Asian inspired fusion style fast food in the area. Pretty bad.. The orange chicken had bones in it and was hard and dry like it had been under the heat lamps for days. The food was overpriced, and after I paid the cashier, the girl who boxed up my food left it somewhere behind the counter and walked away. So I pretty much stood there for about 2 minutes looking around to see where my box was until another lady grabbed it and handed it to me. It's the next day now and I still have bubble guts. Good food good price. Awesome staff. Visited for a dinner with a large group and everything that came out of the kitchen was awesome. (Pan Fried String Beans and Basil Chicken were especially great!) A quick plate lunch (generously portioned) from the heated counter is always an option, but the fresh cooked dishes from the menu are always better if you have the time. This is basically a Chinese restaurant that serves dishes which have Thai and Vietnamese names but they are essentially all chinese dishes. You can order off the menu or just get things off the heating trays. Start with the starch item (rice or pad thai), then the 1, 2, or 3 entrees choices with that. I had the Pad Thai (Thai noodles) which was really limp and tasteless. The eggplant looked good but was greasy and didnt taste too good. The fried chicken nugget thing which I dont know the official name of was actually really good as was the other chicken that came with the green beans. Probably not a bad place to eat considering it's cheap and quick and on the way to or back from the Volcano unless you rather go to the McDonalds across the street (I actually cant imagine anyone who Yelps and would prefer McDonalds...) read more

I had previously eaten at this restaurant several times, with no incident. The food is average, nothing exceptional. Just recently I had lunch there. What followed was three days of being violently ill, with all the classic symptoms of food poisoning. This is no joke. I am as a rule a pretty healthy person, but whatever was in the food served to me laid me completely out. Moved here a year ago from Oahu and have been looking for good Chinese Food. Weve tried a couple of other places and they just didnt hit the mark. Tonight we tried Lemongrass and it was really ono. I highly recommend the chicken black bean, tofu and mushroom, sweet sour pork, eggplant in garlic sauce and shrimp fried rice. Will definitely go there again. read more

I came here with two friends. I was quite glad for this: the portions are HUGE! We arrived just at closing, and they didn't turn us away. We didn't feel rushed. They showed aloha! :D Mahalo for that! We all ordered different dishes and ate family style. The tofu is yummy. The pork is yummy, too. The chicken was a little rough around the edges. Communication was a little muddled, and the ticket was no help, so I'm not quite sure what sort of stir fry we actually got. XD They gave us a big plate of brown rice to share amongst ourselves. The portions filled me up and it came out to be just $9 with tip included, so its very reasonably priced. The pad thai, not as good, it really didn't taste like what pad thai should be, I think they just used the same noodles. I would say go to a more authentic thai place for your thai food. We went for an early lunch on our way back from Volcano, 10:30 am, place was just literally opening and it was already busy. I choose chow fun, eggplant w/ tofu, and salt and pepper calamari... hubs got the same thing but opted for the chicken w/ green beans - 3 meal combo w/ steam or fried rice/chow mien or fun - 7.95. Cheap, fast, and good eats. Reminded me of a better tasting, flavorful Panda Express. You can sit and order too, they have good Pho soup and other Thai-ish entrees as well. Place is super clean. Service was awesome... even though we ordered up in front, cashier/servicer came over and checked if we needed more water/tea. She was VERY accommodating when I requested for vinegar for my fried calamari (sue me, I'm Filipina) and she grabbed a little saucer of it for me from the kitchen. My dining companions were not amused... haha =/ ... The food is a little on the greasy side, but when is stir-fried/deep fried/sauteed Asian food not?... My wife and I have probably ate in every restaurant on this island and I can honestly say that Lemon Grass in Keaau is one of the best. Their food are freshly cooked, not over cooked and the waiting time is not that long. The food is very tasty and not overly spicy. We love going to Lemon Grass, their prices are very reasonable too. We love the Thai Coconut Shrimp, Egg Fu Yung, Volcano Shrimp, Broccoli Beef, Orange Chickens, Imperial Rolls, etc. The Mongolian Beef was okay you just have to acquire a taste for it. The vegetable in their vegetable dishes are never over cooked. I highly recommend this place. For the mainland people don't mistake this place with L & L next door they are situated right next to each other and there's a big difference in the food each place serves. read more

The food was blah, though it looked delicious. The employees were really friendly. We ordered the Sesame Chicken- was over cooked and had a subtle burnt taste to it. The Crispy Won Tons were also over cooked- the dough was weirdly chewy and there was no filling. Thai Chef's Curry was bland and heavy. The Combination Crispy Noodles were pretty good, though. We're not picky eaters, and like most everything, but we probably won't be back to this place again. Bummer as we wanted to support a local restaurant. Gma and Gpa loves Lemon Grass, so we all went this past weekend. It was hard to choose what to eat because the menu is so expansive. We ordered the honey walnut shrimp, fried rice, chicken pad thai, spicy eggplant, mongolian beef, cashew chicken, salt and pepper ribs and the string beans. Holy, the first dishes came out within 5 minutes, no joke. The rest of the food was brough to the table within 10 minutes. The good: honey walnut shrimp (not your usual mayonaise coating, theirs was more of a honey glaze, super ono), green beans (a tad salty, but had good texture/snap), fried rice, spicy eggplant (although I wish it was a bit spicier), mongolian beef. The bad: the pad thai did not taste like pad thai at all. I don't know what was missing, but I probably wouldn't order that again. Overall, the food is decent and it's super fast...worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood. read more
