Also, other things, but those are the staples. [they have yummy pan dulce, cakes and desserts, and all the chips you can dream of, some imported from MX Direct] The location could be better, but they have a private lot, and we haven't had any issues in the two-plus years of coming here. Most items are reasonably priced, and the folks here are helpful and welcoming. There could be seedy characters around, but most mind their business. We tried a few other markets closer to our neighborhood, but their selections weren't as good as Castillos. Castillos has most things you can dream of and their carniceria is also bomb, we've tried most meats here, they're pretty high quality. The only con here is the price of the meats, but it's understandable that since they're a small market, they're less competitively priced than the larger grocers. Also, I don't want to hurt their reputation by getting into the details; all I will mention is to be very careful with the Chorizo. Make sure you chew it thoroughly and inspect it carefully while cooking.

Jake and Becky are knowledgeable tour guides and fun even for those of us who visit the Market regularly. Continue on a short walk up to Jason Wilson's Miller's Guild restaurant. Prepare to be amazed as you sit at the chef's counter in front of a blazing wood fired grill where Jason keeps up a fun and enlightening banter as he cooks up a multi course meal for you. Several appetizer courses are served up at the counter and then everyone moves to the dining room for the main courses and dessert. My husband and I were on the first of these events (unbeknownst to us when we signed up) and it went off flawlessly. This is an intimate event so we got to know our fellow diners which was fun too. The menu will vary for each event so don't know what you will have, but we enjoyed salmon tartar, oysters on the half shell, mushroom goat cheese bruschetta, roasted mussels with Merguez sausage, grilled salmon, pork roast and a delicious pear/apple dessert. My descriptions don't really do the menu justice because, after all, the guy cooking up this dinner is a James Beard and Food & Wine award winner. The "stump the chef" bit was fun where we selected an item at the Market for Jason to prepare that would be a surprise for him -- just to see what he would do with it. We chose goose eggs with the stipulation "you can't just scramble them". Jason sawed those raw eggs in half, stirred up a delicious truffle flan with the innards, and then baked it back in the egg shells. Creative and fun! Well you know bags with no handles aside they have the best deals on dayold and 2-day-old pastries…read morein town such as pecan rolls a good 2 lbs worth for $2, four big cinnamon rolls for $2.25, and I got a full lemon ring pound cake for $2.50 it is worth the short drive to save between 30 and 45% on my bill over Safeway and even sometimes QFC even they both have the Kroger brands I prefer Fred Meyer here in burien. I'm going to work on sending another email to Mike Johnson head of Kroger and the lady who was in charge of Fred Meyer I can't remember her name to see if we can still get bags with handles on them. Safeway has plastic bags and they have handles and that way you can carry six bags at once instead of just one or two.

I was a courtesy clerk at 16 when there was etiquette, training and most definitely strict representation of the store's brand! No matter who you asked from the bagger to the manager, if they worked there, they knew where literally everything was located and if something was out of stock! Nowadays I get a lot of confused looks or "I don't know" and they walk off without attempting to assist! Nowadays you're lucky if you can find 1 committed, hard-working courtesy clerk at any store! To...I digress, let's get it! I initially ordered their 4 piece for $5 and a 1/2 lb of JoJo's. The 1st associate was very welcoming, sincere and thoughtful when picking out the 4 pieces. She'd just saved me a coupon and a trip to kfc for a $5 2 piece meal! As I was leaving there was a man at the door asking for change for food, I searched my pockets and found nothing so I said that I had nothing, he thanked me anyway. I went to my truck to see if I had any change there, I didn't so I went and gave the man my 4 piece and JoJo's and went back inside and ordered another for myself...this was the other associate. I ordered the same thing and she gathered it but not taking time to check the food for what's freshest and what's not like the previous associate had done. I came home and immediately regretted not saying anything; over 1/2 the jojo's were hard and stale! The pieces of chicken she choose weren't any better! Some weren't even hot, but they're all sitting in the warmer together so how is that?! It's the end of the day, I get it. It's a busy mother's Day, I get it. Customer satisfaction is your job...Get it?! Do Better!! To the initial associate: Thank you for your dedicated service! I really don't like to leave 1-star reviews, but this Safeway warrants it. The employees never…read moresmile, and it appears they hate their customers. Not what they say, but the body language and smirks come across loudly. Today I needed some diet coke for our 250th America party, and the tag said, and in very small letters, buy 2 (12-packs) get 2 free. So when I rang them up, it came to $50. I called the attendant at the self-service over and she says I need a coupon for that. I said, well at Fred Meyer, the savings are automatic, to which she replied snootily, "Well, this isn't Fred Meyer". So I told her, well I guess I'll go there, won't I. I raised my voice and said, why do you people hate your customers so much? She didn't even bother using her tag or bar code or other coupon to get me out the door. What's even more incredulous, they keep the north door shut all day and night to customers, forcing them to go another 100 yards to the south door, but I see the staff use it all the time for THEIR convenience, coming in and going out, and going out the inside "in only" doors setting off the alarm every 10 seconds. It's right by the deli, so trying to enjoy your meal with that going off. "Rules for thee but not for me." You don't have to roll out the red carpet for me, but just basic common courtesy, like leaving both doors open and being nice to the customers. So, after 96 years of my family shopping at Safeway, I am ending a nearly century-long tradition and buying my groceries now exclusively from either Fred Meyer or QFC, but never again Safeway. A complete failure. F - - minus minus.
