Delicious! Warming! And fulfilling!!! Leonard's has these fresh doughy pastries that are made to order, I tried the original and cinnamon sugar with the chocolate filling. It's very yummy, and I think it's worth a stop if you're visiting

This was my first time trying a malasada, and Leonard's set the bar high. The bakery has a fun local vibe, and despite the crowd, service was efficient and friendly. We ordered a variety pack to sample different flavors. Every single one was fresh and delicious, but the macadamia cream and haupia stood out. If you're in Honolulu, don't leave without stopping here. It's one of those iconic Hawaii experiences that truly delivers. Check out my video: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8sMFCLv/

Honestly, I don't see the hype lol. The filling was delicious but the actual dough part of the doughnuts had a weird after taste. Like it was contaminated with something else after sitting out, or maybe being frozen then thawed out, orrrr whatever someone had on their hand when making the dough. Not sure, but a really unpleasant after taste lingered with just the dough part. I probably will give it one more chance. After that, if it still isn't great I won't try it again. I recommend everyone try it for themselves maybe it was an off day. They're incredibly busy so I can see the possibility for mistakes. It's a casual spot with no seating available. You put your order in and get a number then wait outside. We waited outside for 6 mins - 10 mins. My favorite flavors was the guava and mango flavor!

Parking: There is a small lot but better off trying the residential streets nearby with easy free spots. Interior: GO INSIDE TO ORDER. OUTSIDE IS JUST LOOKS PACKED BECAUSE PPL WAIT FOR THEIR ORDER. Wait Time: Line inside took less 5min and about 10min for order to be ready. Items Order: Filled Malasadas $2.75 - COMES FRESH AND HOT! The dough is soft and airy on the inside and the shell is slightly crispy and chewy. SO GOOD! I get it cinnamon sugar coated with custard filling and for fruit fillings get the lihing coating. Ube Butter Mochi $3.85 - Ube flavor was medium strength. Mochi was soft and really good after reheating in airfryer. Slight crunchy top layer was really good. 10/10 Custard - very rich and creamy. not too sweet and it's packed! 10/10 Seasonal mango - Mango flavor was so good and did not taste artificial. Highly rec!

I can see why this spot is so beloved. They know what they are good at and keep the menu limited. Over my vacation, I tried 6 flavors they offered. I tried Dobash and the original at a mobile by Windward mall. The food took a while to get but totally worth the wait. The malasadas were nice and warm. I also visited the bakery and tried the guava, macadamia nut, cinnamon, the special of the month (blueberry) and I wanted to try the custard but they accidentally gave me one with no filling . Even though they mixed up the custard one, the other flavors were great. The service was faster at the main bakery. I learned that they also serve coffee so next time I'll head there and try the coffee too. Totally recommend going and trying all the flavors if you can. Heads up that there is no seating so prepare to pick up and go. Also, the parking lot is pretty small so I recommend parking in the Safeway parking lot across the street. It's a mini shopping center so should be okay to park at for a quick stop.

Home of Hawaii's original Malasadas and Leonard's didn't disappoint! Worth the wait because the food is delicious! Service was quick but you will wait a bit. Ambiance was beautiful in the heart of Honolulu. Definitely a must try!

Malasadas are popular in Hawaii due to their 19th-century introduction by Portuguese plantation laborers, becoming a staple treat. These fried, sugar-coated dough balls, often filled with custard or haupia, are beloved for their fluffy texture and association with tradition, especially "Malasada Day" (Fat Tuesday). And Leonard's Bakery malasadas are popular in Hawaii because they are served fresh, hot, and fluffy, establishing the Portuguese doughnut as a staple island treat since 1952. Founder Leonard Rego pioneered commercializing them, creating a cult following for the crisp-on-the-outside, doughy-on-the-inside treats. There's nothing like a nice, hot, and fresh malasada. At $2.20 each, there's just no point resisting. Twinsie "Auntie" Nadine C. dragged me here, told me where to take the Instagram shot, and the correct stance to tear into these pillowy fried dough balls. Yum.

Coming as we're intrigued looking at how many people we randomly bumped into, carrying their iconic pink boxes. The line in front of the store was always super long but surprisingly moving super swift. The store didn't have sit-down space but a lot of people enjoyed their orders right in front of the store as it's indeed highly recommended to enjoy while warm. Their iconic items were surely the Malasadas, basically fried sugar-coated doughnut, which came in the option of unfilled (default) and filled. We got the ones filled with Chocolate and Macadamia Nut custard. They're lusciously fluffy with just right sweetness for the filling. Worth trying for the experience.

Love the history and nostalgia of Leonard's. Can't go wrong with hot, delicious donuts. We arrived around 9am and was in line a super short time. We ordered the coconut, chocolate and macadamia nut. My preference was the macadamia nut.

    Brandi P.

Sooooo good! Leonard's is a must have in Hawaii. The maladas are served hot and slightly crispy on the outside and soft and cakey on the inside.

    Lynn H.

Leonard's Bakery is pretty well known, and I'm glad we got to experience their fresh malasadas. I can definitely understand the hype... eating them hot and fresh is amazing. However, once they cool down, they start to taste more like a regular donut. We tried the custard, chocolate, plain, guava, coconut, and cinnamon. I would highly recommend the custard and chocolate, those were our favs! Unfortunately, the guava and coconut were a bit disappointing, as they tasted slightly artificial. One tip: skip the hassle of parking right in front and park at the Safeway down the street. It is about a 5-minute walk and much less stressful. Overall, it's definitely worth trying, but make sure you eat them while they're hot--that's when they're at their best.

This was such a waste of time. I don't know why this is even a recommendation. It's a tourist trap, and I fell for it - shame on me.  Despite the tiny parking lot, there's a sizable crowd of people standing outside waiting for their orders. Very crowded space. We ordered inside and joined everyone outside to wait for our malasadas, which were ready about 20 minutes later.  They were um a huge let down. Just underwhelming and tasted mid. Unremarkable, forgettable, and not worth the time or effort of going there and waiting. Y'all cannot be serious, recommending this place to people.

LEONARD THE KING ! all leonards are cool like that dude from big bang theory, that spock dude from star trek, and the dude who started this bakery. i love their malasadas very much and their workers are nice and their diner sign is cool and their barbie pink boxes are pretty. leonard was probably a girl dad ngl. classic - YUMMM so soft and plush and slightly crispy with the sugar coat. guava - didn't taste much guava but custard was very lush custard - yummy creamy soft, melt in your mouth and super indulgent. not too sweet chocolate - not too sweet, slightly bitter in a nice way, good amount of chocolate li hing - this WORKS. work it diva. idk how to describe li hing but it is like eating the coating of sour patches with a bit more nuance?? anyway yum every malasada is HOT and fresh. if you wanna bring some to friends wait no longer than 2.5 hrs (i tested it)

Can you take it home to the main land?

Yeah, but order it with no sugar. Instead ask for a a side of sugar. When you get there, reheat them in the microwave or air fryer, and sprinkle the sugar on top. Will taste (practically) like new.

We picked up a variety of pastries, including a few matcha breads, the chocolate emoji bread, bacon onion bread, and the Cinnamoroll blueberry bread. My boyfriend mainly had the matcha breads and his favorite was the matcha mochi an-pan. I tried some as well and really enjoyed the combination of red bean paste and chewy mochi filling. The chocolate emoji bread was so cute, but flavor-wise it was simply bread with dark chocolate inside. It was good, but nothing memorable. The bacon onion bread was probably my favorite, it was savory, flavorful, and satisfying. I also enjoyed the Cinnamoroll blueberry bread. The blue sprinkles made it extra cute, and the blueberry custard filling was yummy. For drinks, we ordered the Cinnamoroll blueberry iced tea lemonade and the blueberry white chocolate cold brew. Unfortunately, neither drink had much blueberry flavor. The iced tea lemonade tasted more like a classic Arnold Palmer, while the cold brew was a bit too sweet for my taste and wasn't my favorite overall. While the bakery items were good, they didn't completely wow me. That said, the Cinnamoroll collaboration was adorable and made for a fun experience.

I've walked out of the way from hotels just to get coffee and pastries here. I'm not even a pastry person, but this place made me care. The coffee, the croissants, the sandwiches. It used to feel expensive but justified because the quality was there. This last visit felt like the magic was gone. We came back during a long family trip with our two young kids, and the service was cold from the start. One employee seemed more interested in her phone and side conversations than the customers in front of her. The coffee was handed over messily, with liquid spilled on top like nobody cared enough to wipe it down. My wife also asked for a cup of ice when there were barely any people in line and instead of simply helping, the response was curt and dismissive, as if asking for something small was an inconvenience. The frustrating part is that this place built its reputation on details. Great coffee. Excellent pastries. Long lines that felt worth it because you were getting something special. Now it feels overpriced, indifferent and tired. Maybe the pastries are still good. Maybe the coffee is still technically good. But when the hospitality disappears, the whole experience changes. What used to feel like a destination now feels like another expensive Waikiki coffee counter coasting on reputation. I hate writing this because this place used to be a must visit for us. It's such a neat take to have char siu in a croissant. We are used to having it in the doughy bao bread but in a croissant, savory with a crunchy outside tastes so much better. I love sweet but this one wasn't overly sweet, who would have thought that mango and chocolate pair so well together. It's the summer months, fresh mango on pastries. It was the perfect ripeness. For the cinnamon roll, you honestly cannot forget get their cinnamon roll...It's flaky and again the frosting is not overly sweet. Can't wait to get another box of their pastries again soon.

It's a cute little shop with benches facing the windows to people watch. It was hard to pick one item, but I ended up trying the Char Siu Croissant. I loved the flavors combining the sweet glaze and the savory meat. It's now one of my go-to weekend treats!

I love Pipeline Bakeshops Malasadas! I have been to several Malasada places in Hawaii but | love…read morethere's the best for the following reasons: 1. the size of the malasadas: some restaurants tend to make their Malasadas smaller and when places do this it ruins the overall texture and quality of it. The bigger the malasadas size the more airy and fluffy and more bread layers that will be inside. 2. their malasadas always taste fresh and the same quality each time. 3. their malasadas don't feel oily or heavy at all Overall I would highly recommend this place for their Malasadas! I'm so happy to have found them. I can back multiple times on my trip. They also have other desserts too that I have yet to try. They have ice cream, cakes, and other desserts Also tip: if you are ordering a malasada also order a coffee or a matcha drink to go with it. The cinnamon sugar from the malasada just matches so perfectly with a drink this restaurant is also a nice place for walking! There's lot of stores and restaurants to walk around! I'm trying to remember but I think there was a book off that was not too far from here! If you either drive or maybe walk. Service: staff was super helpful and friendly while I was there. I was having an issue with my online order because my phone was being glitchy and they were so nice in helping :) Also wanted to note their branding is so cute!! They even sell merch items too

However, there are many alternative malasada purveyors throughout Honolulu, so I depended on local vloggers to find the best ones. This one popped up often on YouTube, and as luck would have it, we were dining at The Pig & The Lady on the next block. How calorifically convenient. We took the opportunity to stop by for a pre-dinner snack since they closed at 6PM. It's a cute shop with multiple sweets including quite a selection of housemade ice cream and delectable mouthfuls called Cake Bombs (Photo 10). We decided we would be good and ordered one unfilled Malasada each. Dusted with various sugar flavors, they were just $2.65 a piece. I went for the Coffee, while Jamie chose the daily special, Cinnamon (Photo 6). They were soft and tasty, quite comparable to Leonard's albeit a tad smaller. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing since we had dinner ahead of us. However, we let temptation get the best of us and shared a $5.50 slice of the Ube Haupia Mac Nut Bar, a yummy combination of sweet potato and ube topped with haupia (coconut milk pudding) on a macadamia nut crust (Photo 9). Truth be told, it stole the show from the malasadas. FOOD - 4 stars... the malasadas were good, but that ube dessert was next level AMBIANCE - 4 stars...really a takeout operation with a lot of temptations SERVICE - 4 stars...very calm and orderly TOTAL - 4 stars...yet another spot for sweet Hawaiian decadence RELATED - Exploring Hawaii? BOOM SHAKA LAKA!!! the glizzy was yummy with the sriracha mayo drizzle. service was fast, you are personally served by them if you are getting takeaway. it is by a number system. it is on the third floor of some mall, pretty easy to find. if you can't find the mall just look for the GIANT teslas at the entrance. aka the little goblins of musky ahh crusty ahh elon musk.

Bad customer service. When you get there in a busy/rush hour, they expect you to grab a ticket but they barely use that thing. I waited with my family while the ladies behind the counter talk amongst themselves to finally notice us. Server Emily had a really bad attitude. She didn't even welcome us or greeted us when we walked in. Seems like they just hire anyone.. Rush hour is around 6pm-7pm. Not that busy. You usually see the same people everyday. Food at the restaurant... the prime rib isn't even a prime rib. New York and shrimp is too expensive for a very thin not deveined shrimps. I like my steak med rare but the last time I ordered it, they cooked it very medium well & so I got it taken back to the cook to get another one but a manager named Geraldine stepped in and said they'd have to charge me twice if I wanted another one. I'm a local and this was really unfortunate. Will never come back here due to the lack of customer service.

So please be sure to check their online website to see what products are available and to be mindful of their bakery schedule. Not all items are available when they open. On this day, I was able to purchase three full-size Furikake for culture loaves as well as two mushroom toast, and two watercress goat cheese danishes. The toast and danishes were tasty however, I was a little sticker, shocked by the prices. When considering volume and value, the focaccia loaves were approximately $12 each, whereas each pastry was close to $7- $10 each. Were the pastries delicious? Absolutely! Do I have the financial means to continuously treat myself to these pastries? That's a question for another day. My friends enjoyed the furikake loaves of bread (although messy) and I plan on gifting bread in the near future for whoever I run into. I would likely order a different type of bread next time as the focaccia became oily and some of that oil seeped through the paper bags. Parking is shared with the café and you can also park up the street, on the street. They take credit card and cash as well as advanced orders on their website.
