Lewis Barbecue The brisket was the star -- absolutely loved it. I usually eat brisket plain, but adding the pickled onions, regular onions, and pickles took it to another level. The ribs were just okay. The sides weren't my favorite -- the mac and cheese and greens didn't really stand out to me. I really liked the assembly-line style setup. You start with the sides and then move down to the meat counter, which feels like having your own butcher. The person slicing the brisket even let me try a sample first, which was a nice touch. They also have a separate section that serves margaritas, which is a fun addition if you want to make it more of a vibe. It's located in a busy plaza, so parking is free -- but it can definitely get packed, especially on a nice day. The outdoor seating area is great when the weather is good. Had an amazing meal here last week. Came in on a Tuesday around 6. It wasn't too crowded at that time, but quickly filled up! You order at the counter and go down the line to pick what you want. This isn't my first rodeo at Lewis Barbecue. I ate at their original location in Charleston a couple years ago. When I read they were coming to Atlanta (or even better) off the Beltline, I couldn't mount my e-bike mode of transportation fast enough. I know that area well since I volunteer and work for Trees Atlanta and we have planted tons of trees around the Ansley Mall/Beltline area. I was surprised that no bike racks (right off the Beltline) were not installed (yet). I talked with the manager and he assured me they were on the long priority list. What about the food "Mr. Yelp Elite"? We ordered the ribs, fries cooked in tallow, and collards. Everything was off the charts just like their original location! Fox Bros is in for some serious competition for best BBQ in this city. Run, walk, or jump on your E-bike and head to this amazing eatery. Visiting ATL for a few days and stopped in to get some BBQ we had heard about. Food was great! We had the tallow fries, potato salad, pinto beans and greens as sides. My husband and I both got the chopped brisket sandwiches and my sister and daughter got the Reuben sandwiches. All of it was delicious! And I am a southern girl...the sweet tea was on point! I've read a few reviews where people said the meat was fatty. I did not have that experience. I also read where people said it is overpriced. Lewis Barbecue - 9/10 If you're looking for real-deal Texas-style BBQ in the A, Lewis Barbecue is it. The brisket immediately took me back to authentic Texas BBQ -- that peppery bark was on point, the smoke ring was beautiful, and it was tender without falling apart. You can taste the patience in that cook. That's not easy to replicate outside of Texas, but they nailed it. The greens were hitting -- seasoned right, flavorful, and not overly salty. Definitely not an afterthought side. The macaroni and cheese was fire -- creamy, rich, and comforting with that baked top layer that seals the deal. The hot sausage was hitting too -- nice snap, balanced heat, and juicy all the way through. The ribs were perfect, especially with that glaze on them. Tender, flavorful, and cooked exactly how ribs should be -- not dry, not mushy. The only thing I didn't care for personally was the potato salad, but that's just my preference -- some folks will love it. And the cornbread is definitely an acquired taste. I went to Lewis Barbecue this past week. If you like fatty brisket, this is your place. Otherwise it's solid but not the world's best. Parking is fine if you know where the heck it is. I did not find it easy to find. It's on the back side of Ansley Mall with no front/road facing signage. If you happen to know where Cook's Warehouse is, it's next door to that. If facing Publix, park to your left and find the walkway to the back part of the mall. I got there 10 minutes after it opened at 11a and the line was about 10 deep. It moved pretty quickly. It's a BBQ place so it's casual. The service is cafeteria style where you pick your sides and pick your meats. You pay for the meats by the pound and be prepared. The brisket is awesome and worth trying, but at $17.50 for two slices, it's not a budget lunch. Everyone was super friendly. I got two slices of fatty brisket and one chili and cheese sausage link. Plus Mac n Cheese. The brisket does melt in your mouth. I liked the house special sauce the best. The sausage link was solid as was the mac, but not the best I have had. I do recommend it, but not sure I would go drastically out of my way to go again. If in the area, definitely give it a go. read more

Incredibly tender, beautiful smoke ring - one of the best I have had outside of Texas. I also had the pulled pork - very tender and delicious! I originally was going to get a pulled pork sandwich but the slicer was nice and gave us a taste of the brisket. It was eye rolling delicious! I've been to Lewis BBQ on visits to Charleston and loved it. The Atlanta branch did not disappoint, the pulled BBQ sandwich, coleslaw and potato salad were delicious. The server asked if I would like to sample the brisket, it literally melts in your mouth and with a punch. The waitstaff was very friendly and helpful. The BBQ at Atlanta's Lewis Barbecue is very very good! You will not go wrong to sit down and have a delicious meal! Up front: I Am and have been spoiled to have had access to multiple providers of the finest Texas BBQ in my many travels. AND The ATL has a very competitive market in different BBQ styles around town. I tried the Brisket and I tried the pulled pork. I sampled the sauces, I ordered the beans, slaw, and potato salad. The Food: Excellent, moist, juicy, smoked meats. The Texas Brisket: The smoked Brisket is Prime beef appropriately priced and well prepared. The Bark is balanced and provides that satisfying moist crumbly crust of smoky saltiness that most crave in a marbled, tender Texas beef BBQ. It is very good and screams great Texas BBQ. I lost some love in the depth of the smoke ring and I simply wanted more....! This is Lewis's style and it appears to be very consistent as I have eyeballed this factor on many a plate since their opening. Make no mistake, it is mouth watering tasty - I simply wanted more ring. The melty rich marbling and the quality of the smoked tender seasoned beef carries the best of the beef to your lips. Lewis has its own selection of sauces available to pull from on a row of Tea Service containers next to the standard sweet/unsweet tea and sodas. The thimble sized plastic cups are the right size for most plates and sittings but I did have a quandary on how to navigate and collect my little pulls of drippy sticky goodness. I am sure there is a paper plate around those servers somewhere... The sauces are excellent , you have a blended and tasty Secret Sauce, a tangy Sweeter and darker smoky tomato-based sauce whose style I have always enjoyed the most. A more vinegary sauce and a Texas jalapeño style sauce. You decide which you enjoy the most, they are all nicely prepared. The Pork Sandwich: I ordered a pulled pork sandwich provided in true Texas form. On top of some smoky, spiced links that get a cutting and plating presentation during the construction of the sandwich. A Really nice Texas BBQ sandwich experience! At the table I tore into the sandwich and took a bite as it was intended, all together. Tasty, standard fresh bread, smoked sausage casing pop and a satisfying moistened pork. Added some sauce for a nice classic bite. I broke the sandwich down. Took a forkful of pork and enjoyed. I appreciated the love they paid to the pork and Sausage links. The Sausage was spot on tasty spicy Texas! When mixed with the pork the smoke and sausage carry the day. All the sauces provided work wonderfully with the roast pork. Go Texas! The Sides: The Green Beans are a winner! Prepared in a tomato base that I've experienced all around and especially in Texas. They have a fresh texture, tomato-ee sauce with just a touch of onion. They were the main side attraction and were wiped out at the table first thing. The coleslaw was healthy and good. Not too creamy, smacked more of vinegar while carrying some creaminess. Enjoyed the Potato salad! A very nicely balanced flavor that complimented the BBQ and offered a cut of contrast to the meaty rich flavors of the main attractions and sauce. --- So, when I say Lewis is Good. I mean they are GOOD! Absolutely a top destination for Texas Style BBQ in the ATL The Location and Service: Location is attached to access of the Beltway path within the Ansley Mall complex. The parking is ample but expect to take a stroll if you park nearby. A walk on the trail after a visit should help mind and body take in the city. Some open air seating, some small table and bench like seating inside. Join a line to enter, order from a line of servers that ask for your menu selections to prep your meal. From that same area payment is made. Staff was busy and seemed to be enjoying the crowd on an early spring weekend day. Presentation really does add some feeling to the experience of ordering and carrying away. AND Drumroll Please: There is a Lewis Snack and Liquor bar across from the main venue! Consider that a separate business to enjoy. So if you want to taste a good example of a Texas BBQ joint, pay a visit to Lewis's. Large open bar seating with modern rustic style, we placed an order for wings and drinks. Self serve for plates and flatware. Divided our wings and wow, delicious!!!!What tasted like lightly smoked deliciousness so good, I said we didn't get enough! My margarita was good; her Texas iced tea was great! Second round was mine and my word, who's making these wings?!?! =o We were putting in overtime to get every morsel off the bones!! For openers, if you think the best barbecue is usually found in the worst part of town, in a place with bars on the windows, and just enough grease on the table to your initials - then this isn't it. What this is, is Lewis, an almost overwhelming new barbecue joint taking up a lot of space (and your money) in Atlanta's well-known Ansley Mall. Word is that the key player in Lewis Barbecue is an alum of the famous Franklins in Austin where people gladly stand in line for hours for their famed brisket. At Lewis there's generally no line and you have your choice of aa huge dining room with long tables (think Army mess hall), a bar with a small room off to the side where you can order from a menu, and, for when the weather allows, rooftop "dining" for those eager to view traffic while they eat. For a guy who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue (read my more than 130 barbecue reviews from across the country on Yelp), my two visits were somewhat disappointing. On the plus side, their brisket has a great rub (you can buy it there), tender, good smoke flavor and moist. Which is what you'll get at Lewis if you tell then you want your brisket full flavor - with the thin layer of fat the catches the smoke flavor and keeps the meat moist. If you tell them you want it healthy, go somewhere else. The ribs came out of the warming oven, wrapped in foil and, when unwrapped, sent a cloud of moisture towards the ceiling, and fall off the bone tender. For those who know, ribs are best smoked low and slow over a bed of oak or hickory (oak at Lewis as best I could tell) and while tender, you need to bite the meat from the bone. Our two visits the ribs had, for all practical purposes, been cooked again (think 'baked') while they were in the warming oven. A few hundred words ago, mentioned costs. In a word, expensive. Pulled pork, sliced pork and brisket sandwiches (no sides) run $17 and $18. A pound of sliced pork is $35 a pound while ribs are $24 a pound. Three ribs for the big end likely would be more than a pound. Turkey, if memory serves, was $22 per pound. Yes, the Brown Shoe Gourmet knows these are inflationary ties, and yes everything in the grocery store now costs more, but compared to other local barbecue joints, Lewis seems near the top costwise. Check the limit on your credit card when you go. Sides? A lot of them. The slaw was tart and we thought good. The twisted potato wedges were great when they were warm; not when they were not. We batted.500. A word about the sauces: disappointing. Lewis barbecue has the standards, mustard for the chicken, regular and spicy (which it really wasn't). All three thin, up to you to pump into tiny little thimble size plastic cups to take back to your table, sample and go back for more of the one that seems best. Service? Exceptional. First timers get special attention going through the line; everyone can get samples. Once seated, Lewis has an army of young people checking to see whether you want something else, more paper towels or tea. Friendly, courteous, Bottom line, disappointing. Knowing from whence Lewis came (Austin is known for great barbecue, Franklin's tops their list), we had high expectations. Atlanta has a lot of really good barbecue. Lewis could and should be one of them. Twice cooked ribs, cold potato wedges and lackluster sauces in tiny cups is not the way to get there. Three stars. read more

Pulled pork was very good. Sides -Mac & cheese, potato salad & green chili corn pudding were the best of the sides. We also tried the slaw & the collards. Nothing wrong there, the others were just outstanding. Service was incredibly friendly & efficient. They only had 1 banana pudding pie left & we nabbed it. I'll say while it was good, I like a good old-fashioned banana pudding. Dark chocolate salted caramel pie was super yum. Other dessert was lemon with raspberry, but none left in the cooler. And everything was so heavily salted I think it rose my blood pressure after a couple of bites. I had lunch recently at Lewis and it's a nice addition to the Midtown BBQ scene. They are located on the backside of Ansley Mall, conveniently located just off the Beltline NE trail. They have a variety of meats and sides and it sounds like the menu of apps/sides will be expanding soon. They have a variety of sauces where you serve yourself. My pulled pork sandwich was good, with flavorful meat and an excellent fresh bun. The side of slaw was good (I like to top the sandwich with it) and the potato salad was good if not memorable; it's more German than my preference which is southern style. They have roving servers to help with drink refills and to-go boxes, which is great because the portions are generous...I got two meals out of my piled-high sandwich. Seating is small but they have a bar located just across the breezeway that has added seats; expect a line on a nice day (it moves quick). Their sliced brisket is the reason for this five-star review. I recently took a road trip across Texas and tried several Michelin-rated and recommended BBQ joints, and the brisket here holds its own against some of the very best in Texas. We also tried a sausage link, ribs, coleslaw, mac and cheese, and the green chili corn pudding. Each was solid and satisfying, earning a strong four stars in my book. The standout among the sides was definitely the mac and cheese. Whenever I'm craving authentic Texas brisket, this will be my go-to spot. I am not a BBQ lover by any means because I've been so disappointed by what we have around here... from Fox Bros to Fat Matt's I've had it all. THIS BBQ BLOWSSSS any place I've had out of the water. Tender, juicy, flavorful. Fat rendered beautifully. Typically when going to a BBQ joint either the BBQ is good and the sides suck or vice versa. The sides were just as good! I will be back! I heard this was one of the best bbq spots in atl so I was excited to check it out. I put in an online order and it was ready when I arrived. The staff was super friendly and the restaurant was very clean. I got the .5 pork ribs, a single side of Mac and cheese, and the Texas hot guys sausage. The ribs were absolutely fantastic, with and without the sauce, the sausage was good (I prefer it a little more burnt, but still good, and the Mac and cheese was good. Best BBQ in the city. Hands down. Period. I had the Friday special--beef and cheddar--which is a prime rib sandwich. I've never had prime rib with a smoke profile before, and it was absolutely delicious. I also tried the beef brisket sandwich, a couple of ribs, and the stewed green beans. Everything was excellent. The ribs were big and meaty, though they charge by the pound, so they can get a bit pricey. The brisket is some of the best I've ever had--definitely a Texas-style recipe. I'll absolutely be back for the brisket and the beef and cheddar. read more
