Clockwise from upper left: collard greens, white bread, 1/2 slab ribs (underneath) and extra sauce, which is hot and spicy.

Atlanta has very few traditions left, caught as it is under the churn of constant change of businesses, including restaurants. One of the more enduring has been Fat Matt's Rib Shack, located north of Piedmont Park in an old donut shop. This place is not without controversy, though, as it technically cannot be called a barbecue joint proper due to the different way their meats are prepared. Charcoal takes the place of the orthodox hickory logs here, and for some, that is a disqualification from serious consideration. I say, (expletive) that prissy purism and enjoy some ribs! Think about it: Memphis' Charles Vergos' Rendezvous also uses charcoal, and some people think their ribs are among the best on earth. So put that in your pipe and smoke it. I was so determined to get to Fat Matt's on a recent trip that I sat in traffic and went via detours to the establishment, well out of my way to my ultimate destination. It was worth the aggravation. For about $20-25, one can have a good-sized dinner of charcoal-and-sauce ribs, a side item, and a beverage. The ribs are grilled a slab at a time, slathered in Fat Matt's trademark hot-ish sauce, first to get it cooked, then to finish it when you order. Since I came at an off hour, I got my food pretty quickly. And it did not disappoint. These spares are meaty enough to give a good chew (NOT "fall off the bone" soft like some others), suffused with the sauce. But if that's not enough for you, a small cup of additional sauce is provided with each order. Round that out with sides such as collard greens (my choice), macaroni and cheese, rum-spiked baked beans, and Brunswick stew, along with a couple slices of white bread for sopping (or sandwiches, if one has the patience for it) and a beer or iced tea or Coke, and you have a memorable meal. But that's only half the charm of Fat Matt's. For at night, the place doubles as a blues music club, featuring local talent. Memorabilia and assorted ephemera from that genre of music adorn the walls of the establishment. Most noteworthy is a mural rendition of Mount Rushmore with faces of prominent bluesmen etched into the drawing. That provides the backdrop for a small stage where guitarists, keyboardists, bassists, and drummers hone their chops each and every night, providing an added attraction to the food. It is one of only three in-town blues clubs that are well-known to the larger public. The place is small, and parking can be pretty scarce, so arrive early if you can. Since the music starts early, you won't miss a whole lot if you do not come out or stay late. This is perfect for people 30 and over who don't have the energy to hang out all night.

This has been my go to place for ribs since the 96 Olympics. These are incomparable literally fall of the bone ribs moist and tender and I do not put the sauce on them. Sadly they are beyond Uber Eats et cetera range or I'd get them weekly. The last time I visited there eas a couple that just flew in from Canada and this was there first Atlanta food stop.

Got ribs, pulled pork, and sausage. Sausage was more like a hotdog style one. The ribs were ok, not as soft as I expected. Cole slaw was delicious. Pulled pork was just ok as well

This is an Atlanta staple that it has taken me far too long to try. Service is counter order and they give you a number to deliver the food to your table. The food came out quickly but it wasn't very busy for Sunday lunchtime. The vibe inside gives old hole in the wall energy with a stage for live music that would be so fun to experience while chowing down on some ribs. We got the full slab of ribs with baked beans and Mac n cheese as our sides. The ribs have been hyped up around Atlanta, but they still exceeded my expectations. They fall off the bone and have so much good flavor. The meat is tender and their bbq sauce is perfectly spicy and flavorful. The ribs don't need the extra sauce but it was so good I found myself continuing to dip the meat. The slab also came with some very large rib pieces so it was more than enough meat for lunch and leftovers. The sides blew me away too. The Mac n cheese was thick and perfectly seasoned. The beans had a sweetness and vinegar taste to them that was excellent. I am so glad I finally tried this place because I will be returning frequently from now on.

I live on the West Coast. Whenever my travels takes me to ATL, Fat Matt's is ALWAYS a must stop for dinner. Nobody likes lines, there's usually a line - but it's WELL WORTH the wait. This place beats Texas BBQ. It matters not what you order! "Eenee-Meenee-Miney-Moe" with the menu is what I do now. EVERYTHING they bring to the table is THE BOMB. I never cared for collared greens. I now CRAVE Fat Matt's, they're to die for. Great selection of beers, and a cool blues band playing. I shot a TV series here in LA with Ty Peninngton a few years back. He agreed with me, and said Fat Matt's is a regular for him as well...

Excellent ribs! Looks like a dive but we trusted yelp and huge win! Super nice folks and fast service. Swung by on our way to Buckhead Theater for a concert.

I was told by a few people this was a great place to try and they were absolutely right. I did the half slab with a side of Mac n cheese and rum baked beans. The rubs were fall of the bone tender and the Mac n cheese was so, so good. The place itself is very much "hole in the wall" which right off the bat, knew this place would be great. I was blown away by how good everything was and will absolutely be back.

I'm always driving by this place so I decided to finally stop by to see what Fat Matt is cooking up. You've essentially have two options Ribs obviously and chicken-- 1/4 bird, 1/2 bird, and a breast sandwich. I was telling the host I was thinking of doing the breast sandwich and maybe some ribs but lo and behold they have a combo of exactly what I wanted conveniently named "combo" on the menu. I got home, opened up my back and saw chicken and ribs slapped between too pieces of bread. I didn't think the combo would be served that way but I'll take it! It's a nice, almost standard style of barbecue. Nothing overly jazzy, really a no-frills type of eatery. Real straight to the point. The rum baked beans were great so definitely get that as a side.

Ribs, Greens, Beans, Mac, Potato Salad

The customer service was good. The ambiance was very relaxed and historic. The potato salad and mac and cheese were good. The ribs tasted like they were baked then grilled, which is just not my preference. The sauce, greens, and beans are very vinegar-y. My fiancé's chicken was caked in sauce, yet the meat wasn't flavorful. I would not recommend at all.

It was delicious, but it could've not had juices leaking so much? Maybe cheese below and above the meat to try to keep some of the juices off the bun or maybe more bun toasting? The fries were amazing and I should've gotten the aolie initially, but didn't get it until I saw another table with an order. It was delicious. The service was very good. The server had good knowledge of the beers, food, and was friendly. This is one of the best beer bars in the US. As the waitress leads you deeper into the space, you see pool tables and chairs. Then the space really opens up to a huge area with TV's and dining tables in one corner. The middle ish area has these lounge chairs and coffee table for a more intimate interaction. And the space against the wall had darts or some sort of game (I can't remember). Our group ordered some beer and things to snack on: * Cheese curds basket: The Ellsworth cheese curds were salty and pretty oily. I suppose these puppies were fried because they definitely go well with a beer. Overall pretty good but I think the least favored out of the group. * Truffle mac & cheese: The truffle flavor (oil) was there, but it wasn't overwhelming. The cheese itself was cheesy and gooey. Apparently it's their own blend. And with it being baked with panko bread crumbs, this aspect provided a nice crunch that truly was divine. I definitely enjoyed each bite. I'd say the mac & cheese here is a contender for a top spot in my book. * Smoked brisket poutine: The fries (shoe string) were aplenty. The best thing about this pick was how it soaked up the gravy and juices from the 18 hour smoked brisket. The cheese curds were all melted atop everything and was ever so yummy. Okay. I now see the cheese theme going on. But we were heading to a soccer event so I guess loading up on the carbs wasn't a terrible idea. The prices were so so for this part of town. The food overall was pretty good. They were oily and greasy as heck but good none the less. I'm still confused as to why they charged us $0.50 each for the sauce when it's advertised as part of the menu. The hubs definitely didn't like the automatic 20% gratuity. But the gal who tended our table was super friendly and sweet so that wasn't too bad.

The beer selection was posted right on the bar--it was extensive, and we were genuinely excited about the options. After looking it over, we both decided to go with beer flights to get a good taste of what they had on tap. For food, Wifey ordered the Chicken Tenders with French Fries, and I went with the Golden Chicken Sandwich. The beer flights came out quickly and were clearly labeled. While we sat at the bar, some old-school hip-hop played in the background. It kept us nodding along while we sampled our beers. Not long after, our food arrived--hot and fresh. The chicken tenders came with fries, and I managed to sneak a few--they were perfectly crispy. My sandwich really hit the mark--crispy chicken with great texture and solid flavor. I was chatting with our bartender and learned they have a full-service restaurant upstairs, so of course I had to head up for a little recon. As soon as I reached the top, I was warmly welcomed by the host and staff. I let them know I just wanted to check out the space. Upstairs had a completely different feel from downstairs. While the lower level had more of a laid-back, neighborhood bar atmosphere, the upstairs was bright, modern, and a bit more refined. I even noticed some outdoor seating, which we'll definitely have to try next time. One thing to note: the beer selection upstairs isn't as extensive as what's offered downstairs. I headed back down, and Wifey and I ordered another flight to share. At one point, I looked over and said, "I could honestly stay here all day." Great music, cold beer, tasty food, and sports on the TVs--it checked all the boxes for a relaxed and fun afternoon. Instagram: @whatsthenextmemory

They don't offer flights, so we each ordered a couple of half pours. I went with a hazy and an IPA, while Wifey chose a watermelon pilsner and a lager. We placed our food order at the same counter--Wifey went with lemon pepper wings and mac and cheese. I ordered six spicy wings and a side of coleslaw. They provided an order number stand, we grabbed our beers and headed outside to a high-top table made from a barrel. The food came out surprisingly fast--they brought our trays right to the table. Everything looked great, and once we started digging in, the flavors backed it up. My wings had just the right amount of heat, and the coleslaw was a solid pairing. Wifey really enjoyed her wings too, though she said the mac and cheese could've used a little more flavor. Before leaving, we grabbed a couple more half pours. Wifey liked the watermelon pilsner so much, we ended up taking home a six-pack. It's pretty much a self-serve setup once your food arrives--you bus your own table, grab your own wet wipes and water, that kind of thing. It's a casual setup, so no big deal there.
