Called Lewis Plumbing for just an estimate to repair an irrigation backflow that was leaking. He dug out the soil around it so he could get a better look. He quoted me the cost to replace but didn't include labor. When we asked for a fixed fee for the whole job he took a while then quoted me $1,000 over the first bid that was a fixed fee from a reputable plumbing contractor. Given this high price we are going with the first bid. He then charged me $330.00 for the labor which he didn't initially tell us about. Being an architect we refer subs often to clients. We will not be referring Lewis Plumbing. I understand if there is a labor cost, but should have been told that initially. Update: The owner contacted us today & he apologized for the misunderstanding for charging us a labor bill for $330.00 and said he would refund my check. We really appreciate that he went the extra mile to make it fair. Next time we will ask what they charge to come out & take a look to fix the problem. I called Lewis Plumbing for a drainage issue in my kitchen sink. When the Lewis Plumbing technician Isaac came in, the water was passing through, just slowly. The sink was still usable. When he left. after 3 hours, snaking kitchen line, and then, the tub and the shower line (which was fine to begin with), the kitchen line was blocked completely. I payed $900, and the problem was not resolved but worsened. I now cannot use the kitchen sink (and dishwasher) and have major repairement project on my laps. The Lewis plumber seemes to not know what he was doing. He forgot the equipment (large drain cleaner) in my shower, when I call them to take this out of my house he returned to get it, and after he left I had to srew in the drain opening myself. They charge $165 per hour, and he charged me for 4 hours work while he was only there for little over 3 hours. He lied on the invoice claiming the kitchen drain was blocked from the beginning. Shame on you, Lewis Plumbing. It's the most overpriced plumbing company in my area, and I came to them because my HOA recommended it. Now reading the reviews I see many people had bad experiences with them. I wish I researched them before choosing this company. An update: the company manager called and offered to send a technician at no cost to try to correct the issue. A senior technician came in and fixed the problem within an hour. He also brought back the check I gave them, and issued a new invoice, for $390, which seems very fair. The technician was super nice, and clearly very experienced. The bottom line: the company clearly stands up to its reputation, and makes ammends if anything goes wrong. Contacted Lewis Plumbing for an emergency pipe clog causing nasty backup in our laundry and sink drains - and right before visitors were supposed to arrive. They were the only plumbers available the same day with many others not even returning our calls. Our son dealt with them and they were knowledgeable and courteous. They ran a camera down the pipes, identified the problem as thick grease build-up from the kitchen sink and jetted it away and now no more problems. Can't ask for more! read more

Lewis Plumbing came out to replace a pressure valve on our water main. Our pressure tank was functional before their visit. After their repair, the tank stopped working entirely. I have called their office five times over the past week. Each time I was told "the estimator will get back to you." No one has called. No one has come out. No one has taken responsibility. I explained the situation was urgent -- we have trees on the property that need water. I was told someone would follow up. Nothing. I am now dealing with a broken tank they caused, dead trees if this continues, and a company that won't return calls or stand behind their work. Do NOT use Lewis Plumbing. I will not use them again. I chose them because they were available to help with a simple irrigation plumbing issue at a client's home (I am a Realtor). The client was out of town but they talked directly and I clearly heard my client's instructions to tell the plumber just to cut and cap the pvc pipe and cut and cap the sprinkler that was leaking. He gave an estimate of about 3 hours which seemed long, but client agreed. Next thing we know the bill came in for $1480! This was a simple job and the plumber never called me or my client to say he needed extra helpers, it was taking longer or that he needed to do something else. This could have been done by anyone else for much less than this. We called the company about it and they would only give a $180 credit as they said he did what was needed. Customer Beware How They Charge You Lewis Plumbing doesn't make the pricing structure clear upfront and will nickel and dime you. You'll be charged for inflated dispatch times. For example, my plumber charged me for being dispatched at 7:20 and somehow it took him over a half hour to drive the three blocks to my house. The manager explained that half hour drive time as the driver could have been filling up for fuel. Seriously. I'm supposed to pay a driver a 140/hr to take their time to fill up their vehicle. While the installation work was fine, their system of billing was not. They could have taken off the half hour overcharge and gained a repeat customer. Emergency call is $265 an hour. On Thanksgiving weekend, I found my newly remodeled home with hardwood floors, FLOODED in sewer water. The panic! The inches of water, stench, and uncertainty ruined my holiday. My regular plumber was on vacation and my contractor wasn't answering his phone. I felt abandoned and scared. I couldn't let my house rot in flooded sewer water for several more days. Lewis to the rescue! It turns out it's likely that a contractor flushed a rag or some sort of hardening product down the drain. Someone flushed something down the system that they weren't supposed to. The source of the problem hasn't been found or resolved yet, because the team needs to bring bigger tools than what the emergency call guy had on hand, but at least Lewis was reliable and helped me during this terrible event. I don't know why Lewis plumbing gets such a bad reputation around town, but my interaction with them was professional and responsive, especially during the holidays. While other plumbers and contractors around town can make fun of Lewis, when I needed them, they weren't there. Lewis was. So, for that, Lewis gets 5 stars for reliability and responsiveness during emergencies. read more

BEWARE OF THE HOME WATER PRESSURE REGULATOR SCAM!!! We had a plumber come out for an unrelated matter and he measured the water pressure in our house at 70psi which he said was high and could damage our appliances (washing machine, dishwasher). He offered to adjust the 4 year old water pressure regulator on the waterline to the inside of the house and mentioned that the spring inside could "break" and the unit would have to be replaced at a cost of $450. He adjusted the regulator and of course it broke and now the pressure was 100. We agreed to the replacement and another plumber was sent out and replaced it within 30 minutes. He called his office and they said our bill was $729 and his office would send us a receipt. After 2 phone calls and an email we received a bill with no breakdown of parts and labor. Another call "NO ITEMIZED BILL"!! Since doing some research we later learned that 70psi is at the upper limit of acceptable pressure so this should never had to been replaced in the first place. WE WILL NEVER USE LEWIS PLUMBING AGAIN. read more

Cristian showed up 15 minutes early. I was so glad that I did not have to wait! He was pleasant, socially distanced and always wore his mask even though my job was outside, on the storm drain. He gave me an estimate, said he might have to use a power sprayer to unplug my outside drains, but with the snake and hose he did the job quickly. I only gave 4* because I have worked with Lewis plumbing all last year. Phil found a gas leak that the gas company misssed and I really appreciate that, but there was something about the last couple of experiences that left me weary of them. I think they had a change in their office staff (that's a good thing-a w couple of them were so cranky. I Hated to call for an appointment. One went behind my back and billed my executive office even though I told her that is not how we did it as a company ) Martin, the owner, is always available if I have questions or concerns. I want to stay with the same company because I manage such a large property and I want to go with someone who knows what has been replaced and what is what. They take pictures and upload them to my account so there is never a doubt what has been changed and what has just been done. I feel that I was overcharged. I received a text at 11:00 that technician would be there in 30 minutes, when technician was finished he took photos of the wall heater that he was unable to fix. I asked if he could send the photos to me for future reference. I received the photos at 12:30. Additionally, I made an appointment to have the gas connection for a gas stove and wall heater brought up to code. The technician arrived ill-prepared, and had to travel back to the shop for parts. So, a large portion of the hour was spent in travel. I do not recommend. They charge $150/ hr. and nickel and dime a simple job into a $310 charge. read more

Broken water heater. Gave them a call and they made an appointment to come take a look and do a repair or replace. Plumber showed up on time. Very grumpy. Said we needed to drain the water heater so he can replace it. He then ASKED US if we had a garden hose to drain the water heater. He said the one we had was too small and that it would take 5 hours to drain the tank. I asked him "what about the one in your truck?" He said he didn't have one...really...you're a plumber and one of your most frequent jobs is replacing water heaters...and you don't have a garden hose. He the started to get a little more snippy with me. Fortunately the unit was still under warranty. I'm definitely happy about that...then he tries to tell me how warrantees work and that it would cost $1,100 to replace the water heater that's under warranty. That was it. Asked him to leave. We will NEVER use them again. Call Anacapa plumbing. They showed up in 30 min, drained the water heater with THEIR HOSE AND PUMP! Hauled the old one away and came back 20 min later with a new unit. What can I say... do your homework... read the reviews. Expect to pay a premium ($130/hour) for basic plumbing services... which, is, absolutely insane. Sure it's Santa Barbara, luxury tax, blah blah... but $249,600/year for a full-time plumber... I picked the wrong profession. Sure not all that is a salary... but you have got to be kidding. Expect to pay $2.10 per latex glove, for each latex glove that is used... this means you are paying $210 dollars for a box of 100 gloves that costs them maybe $10... $0.10 per glove, that is a HUGE mark-up for something that should be included in a plumbing visit... WTF!!! come on really?? So... yeah... this may remind some of you of your recent hospital bill... and thus this my friends is a prime example of what is known as an "un-ethical business practice". I won't even go into the other issues that I am dealing with, just a friendly word of caution. Maybe I picked a wrong day or the sun was out of phase... whatever it is...unless these guys are your family or maybe your mother in-laws, them maybe go for it, but even then proceed with caution. If you are reading this, my first piece of advice is ASK FOR AN ESTIMATE!! I unfortunately made this mistake. First off, their rate is outrageous at $130/hour, and this is only if they provide all materials being installed. If you purchase and provide your own materials (faucet, drain, sink, toilet, etc) their rate is $200/hour! Second, they charge for travel time from their office to your home. Apparently it takes 23 minutes to drive from Mission to Patterson?! This is what the lady in their office confirmed according to their "GPS". So I was charged 30 minutes for travel, another $65 added to the bill. Third, the materials they provided for my job (shark bite compression stops and drain) were marked up over 200%. Thankfully I had already purchased my toilet, faucets and sink or I would have been charged a 200% markup on these items if I'd ordered thru them! Fourth, the drain I purchased did not work with the install, so the tech informed me he would have to purchase one. He head out to the store, and mentioned he would take his lunch break at the same time. 1.5 hours later he returned! He told me he had to go to three stores to find this "special" drain for my sink. Couldn't a phone call have been made to these stores in route to ensure they had the drain in stock?! Especially after the first store did not have the item available. When I asked the manager/owner why it took an hour to find a drain, why he had to go to three stores, and why a phone call wasn't made he replied "it was not a standard drain, the tech would not be able to explain it over the phone." A plumbing store wouldn't know what different types of drains are?! Another $130 for the tech to drive around and find a drain that I was charged a 200% markup on! Either charge me the labor, or charge me the markup, not BOTH! Fifth, the bathroom faucet was not installed properly, I discovered the next day the entire spout swiveled to the touch! When I spoke with the manager/owner over the phone I was told the tech did this intentionally because the faucet seemed "cheap" and he was afraid of breaking it. WHAT?! The tech returned to tighten the faucet another day, however he had to remove the countertop sink to access it. He was in and out fairly quickly. The following week I realized the sink was never re-attached to the countertop, he did not re-caulk it! The entire sink shifted while I was using it. So again, he had to return to re-attach the sink. By now I was standing by to see what exactly was being done. I saw him rinse his sponge with caulking on it into my sink and down the drain three times. I asked if it is okay to rinse wet caulk down a sink, afraid it would damage the drains once it dries and he replied "no, it is fine". A quick google search told me the complete opposite. Sixth, there was caulking residue left all over the kitchen butcherblock countertop. Again, the tech had to return to remove all of the excess caulking that remained. From there I had to recondition the butcherblock countertops where he scrubbed. Bottom line, I had a simple stainless steel kitchen sink & faucet installed, a countertop bathroom sink & faucet installed, and a simple toilet installed. 4.5 hours of labor at $130/hour. I provided all materials with the exception of 4 stops they said were required, and the drain that was purchased. My bill came to $808! They did not provide a quote (which I've been told is illegal), they spent an absurd amount of time installing the items and shopping for parts, their quality of service and customer service was poor (lady in the office is NOT friendly), and lastly they provided zero apology or compensation for the multiple trips I had to make from work to meet them to fix all of their mistakes. I simply asked for a $130 discount to my bill, or told them I would leave a horrible review. Sadly they were GREEDY and made me pay the bill in full, so here I am! I'M HERE TO WARN ANYONE CONSIDERING LEWIS PLUMBING TO STAY AWAY, YOU CAN EXPECT POOR AND OVERPRICED SERVICE. read more

These folks are fantastic! My basement flooded over the holiday weekend while my in-laws were visiting from out of town - perfect timing, right? I called several plumbers, but none were able to get to my house for a few days, which obviously wasn't going to work. Lewis Plumbing sent their service tech, Joe, out within a few hours, and he was AWESOME. Joe assessed the problem efficiently, snaked the main drain and cleared the blockage within minutes. I would have been happy with that, but Joe took it a step further and crawled into the wet, dark, cramped muddy crawl space under our home REPEATEDLY until he found the loose coupler where the leak was coming from, and fixed it! I've had multiple other plumbers straight-up refuse to crawl under the home in the past, and Joe didn't hesitate. When he was done, he took the time to wipe the mud up from where he had been walking - it is extra steps like that which show that these guys, and Joe especially, really care about their work and take pride in what they do. I thought the price for all of this work was really reasonable. I've already recommended Lewis Plumbing and Joe to my parents, and I'm glad to know we've found "our guys" should another plumbing problem arise! read more

After spending years using Lewis plumbing for all my properties and spending literally tens of thousand of dollars with this company, they treated me like absolute garbage over the last few days and I will never be using them again. I had an appointment for Wednesday at 11am and explained I had to be finished by 2pm to get my kid from school. When I called at 1130 they said the plumber should be there within 15 minutes. Every half hour or so I called them back and they assured me the plumber was on his way. I explained I had to be done by 2pm to get my kid from school. They told me this would be no problem. At 3pm they called to let me know the plumber was finally ready. I explained it was 4 hours late and I had already left at 2pm like I said. They explained they can't guarantee a time unless it's first appointment in the morning, so I asked for the first appointment the next day. They told me the plumber would meet me at 8am and would call me before 8 to let me know he's on his way. 830 rolls around and no word from them so I call in and the woman says should probably be 15 mins. I explain what happened yesterday and she says hold on and puts me on with a woman named Cathy. Cathy was so nice and helpful and seemed really empathetic to my situation. She called the plumber and told me he would actually meet me at 945am. I said great and drove down to meet the plumber at 945. Of course the plumber doesn't show. I call back at 10am and the office manager basically told me this was out of their control and he'd show when he'd show and there's no way to know when that would be. I asked to talk to Cathy please and she said no. So I wasted w days of waiting for these people only to be treated so rudely by their office manager and get no service. I asked their office manager if they cared at all about losing my business after years of using them on all my properties and she said they're very busy and doing great. read more

My husband and I have had service from Lewis Plumbing for the past 4 years. Lewis plumbing has safely and wisely installed new gas line from new gas meter to new heater/a/c unit in the attic. They have removed 2 hot heaters that were connected (one from an inside hallway & other in garage previously photovoltaic) and installed one beautiful new tankless system thus eliminating potential for inside house water leakage and providing superior quality water. They have repaired previous plumbers "short cut" to not seal off vent pipes properly between closet wall and shower wall, discovered when Goleta did smoke test of their street pipes. They have installed new complicated Grohe shower assembly onto delicate breakable tile in the shower, installed toilets and reinstalled toilets after new flooring has come in, replaced old water faucets and snaked a clogged line. We've had many plumbers over the past 40 years here in SB. Lewis plumbing is the best, why? because the men are top notch master plumbers. They are caring and proven trustworthy. Stuff happens in the course of a job sometimes and if something isn't quite right with the job and you let them know, they show up promptly and do what needs to be done thoughtfully and correctly. Yes, they charge more - however at the end of the day - support a proven and trustworthy local small business that does the job the RIGHT way up to or exceeding current standards and uses the best materials! read more

Very nice staff, however they claimed that both could not be fixed with new parts, but needed to be replaced entirely (which would have cost another $500 + labor). Hired Lewis Plumbing to install a new kitchen faucet. The fellow who came to the house was rude, smug and condescending, refused to listen, and then installed the faucet with the water lines reversed. When we pointed out his error, he argued with us and insisted that it was properly installed. He finally agreed to fix the problem he had created by refusing to listen, but then billed us for the time required to correct his own errors. Now, we have leakage that has damaged our flooring, and I will probably have to sue Lewis Plumbing for the cost of replacing the flooring. I would definitely not recommend that anyone hire this company. There are much better options available. read more
