SCAM! STAY AWAY!…read more Long story short: This shop sold me 5 years OLD tires advertised as new, installed them wrong, and wouldn't give a credit back to me. I found out about A1 by finding an ad on Facebook Marketplace posted by Randy for a set of 4 "brand new" Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 winter tires for $599. I saw the price and was shocked. These are great tires and they're giving a great discount. After chatting with Randy, I told him I live in Lansing, MI 100 miles away but would drive there on Saturday for installation. He agreed. Saturday came, and I rolled up to the shop. Eventually I found out where to park, and who to speak to. They showed me the tires, and I found a red flag immediately. The DOT mark on the tire showed it was from 2019. That's 5 years old! 1 or 2 years, sure who cares. But 5 years old? Definitely not new. Nobody ever mentioned this to me before I arrived but I didn't say anything because I didn't want to make him upset and cause him to do a bad job on my car. These are rough and tumble mechanic types working here. Luckily the tread looked ok so I just kept my mouth shut and agreed to wait in their small office. The entire installation took about 2 hours. Ridiculously long. I had no idea what was taking so long, but did not make a complaint since again I wanted them to do a good job. I have a new car, so I wanted to have a good service provided. 2 hours passed, and one of the workers came by to cash me out. He said something about the tires "not popping" and were hard to install so that's why it took so long. They had to try different methods to get it installed on my wheels. Ok whatever. Came time to pay, and this place charged me $599 for tires, $100 for installation, $10 for "disposal" (WHAT DISPOSAL? I kept my old tires), and 3% credit card fee (no heads up about this until I arrived). Ok so this is a shock again. The price went from $599 as discussed on FB marketplace to $773 total in person. I felt like I was getting shafted by these guys. But in my head I thought it's ok because these "new tires" would be around $900 if I got them new, so I must be getting a good deal, right? I just paid and walked out to my car. I had to put my old tires into the back of my car and drove away. A few feet away from the shop, I felt that the ride was bumpy so I stopped at a gas station and took a look at the tires. It was dark since we were already past sunset at this point. Upon looking I didn't notice anything major besides my air valve caps missing. Hmm, not a big deal, but I need to have my caps back. I decided to drive back and the employee gave me 4 random caps out of a bucket and put them on. I wish I could have kept the metal ones I originally had, but whatever. I ended up making the 100 mile drive back home. The next day when it was daylight out, I took a peek at my tires again and noticed a major issue. No wonder they were riding weird! My rear tires were installed onto the wheel backwards! I mean literally there is a note from Michelin that says "Inside" and this was facing out on two wheels. How do you manage to install a tire backwards onto a wheel?? You had literally one job! I looked it up, and these are asymmetrical tires that require "outside" to face out on the wheel so that the tread will be correct and the tires will operate properly in the snow. I texted Randy on FB, asking for a refund of the mounting fee. That seems reasonable to me. They did a crap job, so I think it is fair for them to stand by their mistake and give me a partial refund. Randy said no and said I had to drive back to Warren to have them fix it. Hell no! I wasn't going to let these idiots near my car again. Spend $30 to drive back to Warren? I simply wanted a partial refund and to move on. They wouldn't budge, and didn't care that I needed to go to another shop and pay to have them remount and balance two tires. Overall these guys are terrible to work with. I think they are scammers who get a bunch of used tires from chop shops and resell them to the public. They do crap work, and have no care about their customers. If I installed THEIR tires backwards like they did to me, I'm sure they would be upset. But if it happens to someone else - They DONT CARE. Stay away no matter how good of a price they advertise. It's a trap! I had to pay extra to get my car fixed, but I have no idea if these are decent tires that will last me the winter. It was dropped off at 7:30am and was pleasantly surprised by a 11:30 pick-up call. Bill's quote for a starter RR was about $450, being a very good price as it would have been several hundred dollars more from a RV center and would be several weeks before they could get to it. The kicker being that it didn't need a starter after all, it was just a wire from starter to relay that need to be replaced, saving me hundreds of dollars more. I never ever walk away feeling like I've been in any way bamboozled, quoted for services I didn't need, or anything close to that. The other great thing is that since my car is a Hyundai hybrid (and one of my kids has an old old BMW) if there are things that 4th Street knows are specific to our makes and models that is not their area of expertise, they'll tell me that as well so I can take the cars to the dealership or BMW-specific repair places. This has only happened a couple of times but I definitely have appreciated that guidance from Bill and staff. Brought it in just before 4/4:30 pm and asked them to take a look to see how bad the damage was. They said they would look at it tomorrow since it was nearing the end of the business day. Totally understood and left my keys with them to walk home. While I was still on the phone with the insurance adjuster by the CVS next door, he called me to tell me they fixed it. I couldn't believe it. I was so worried about how I was going to be able to rent a car to get to work the next day. It turns out it was a missing nut/bolt (don't know where it could've gone). They replaced it, were super honest and didn't charge me for the lone screw. Whatever that screw would've cost them now has made me a loyal and returning customer.
