What a delightful find! Walking up to Liberty Bar's hard-to-miss pink building, I was awestruck by its late-1800s architecture. A little internet surfing revealed its fun history of being a bohemian gathering place, a home for nuns, and now a local culinary staple. The tall, narrow building and compartmentalized floor plan made it feel like an eclectic old home repurposed. The restaurant is on the second floor, accessible by a charming staircase or a little elevator. Before going upstairs, I noticed there is a bar and what looks like an art studio on the first floor. It gave cute, vintage bohemian/old world European vibes. We were seated quickly at arguably the best table in the house, right by a window overlooking the street and cacti. Our server was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable--so, I trustingly took his recommendations. We started with the bread and butter; there were four slices of toasted sourdough and a pad of rosemary infused butter. As thin as the slices were, I thought it was going to be more like a crostini than a bread but, much to my surprise, it still had a delightful chew. The butter was spreadable, salted perfectly, and the rosemary aroma was just right. My friend ordered the salmon and I ordered the lamb burger and both were different experiences. The lamb was juicy and well seasoned, while the fries were crispy, herby, and not greasy at all. As a slow eater, I was particularly impressed that the bottom bun maintained its structural integrity--no soggy buns here! The highlight was the chili morita aioli. Whichever chef created that pairing knew exactly what they were doing (bravo!). My friend's assessment of his salmon entree--was that it was very well cooked and the salmon was tender and moist, however, it did lack some flavor. The saving grace for him were the cocktails. He ordered the Gigi and the Beargrass and both received his stamp of approval for presentation and taste. Between the food, service, atmosphere, and fascinating history, Liberty Bar made quite the impression on me. I'll definitely be back to explore more of the menu and the building's story! read more

I wanted to love Liberty Bar because the atmosphere is incredible. The building itself is beautiful, unique, and easily the highlight of the experience. If you're looking for ambiance, this place is a 10/10. Unfortunately, the service didn't match the setting. The staff seemed completely disengaged. The bartender spent much of my visit sitting at the end of the bar sketching while service moved at a very slow pace. At one point, two people who appeared to be managers or senior staff came to the bar, spoke quietly with the bartender while repeatedly looking in my direction, and it made for an uncomfortable experience while I was filming a quick TikTok. I ordered the chilaquiles and found them surprisingly bland. I had to ask for hot sauce, and the only options were Tabasco or Cholula. In a city with such incredible Mexican food, I was hoping for something with a little more flavor or a house-made salsa. On the positive side, the Bloody Mary was very good--I'd happily order it again. Great place to take guests when they are from out of town. Very quaint and in a historic area with so much charm. Food took awhile, bench's and seats are hard, so bring your own padding if you have a bad back like me, and it may get kind of noisy by the bar, but worth the discomfort. Everything was great, my favorite entree was the mushroom burger. But you must try the Coconut pudding dessert, gluten free and amazing, I would come just for that, though $8 is kinda steep. Nice menu. Parking can be a challenge but there is additional free parking across the street. Outside seating area but not sure you can be served there. Climb upstairs or take their elevator to the main dining area. The first floor was closed. We went to Liberty Bar on a Sunday for their brunch and I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the food. The service was great but the food tasted cold. I did let the server know and he offered to remake the meal but at that point I was kind of over the French toast so he took it off my bill. My sisters chilaquiles looked delicious. My mom stated her food tasted cold also. I'm not sure if it just happened to be that way but I will say the service and atmosphere was great was just hoping for better food. read more

Have not been to Liberty Bar in several years. Following an event on 6 March at the Alamo a friend, his wife and I decided to have a late lunch/early dinner. Service was friendly and effective. The room is pleasant with background music at a proper level and enjoyably unobtrusive - not bland, just right. The Hazy IPA was very good. Two of us ordered the Chili Relleno and the other the salmon. All was considered to be really good. Since we arrived at 3PM parking was not a problem, although I can understand when the house is fuller it would be a problem. I'll be back sooner rather than later. read more

From the moment we pulled up, we were charmed by the setting. Situated in an old Victorian with a lovely outdoor courtyard, this place passes the vibe check. We were seated upstairs by the window, which was a lovely place to sit, even on a cold, cloudy day. We started with cocktails off the list, which were cleverly named after the NATO phonetic words to spell out Liberty. I did the Romeo, and my friend did the Tango. Both were good. The Romeo was smooth and infinitely drinkable. The Tango was a burst of the charred rosemary up front with a sweet, drinkable finish. I ordered a sourdough margarita pizza off the specials menu, and it had the most unique but pleasant flavor. I actually ate all the crust for the pizza! My friend had a hamburger, which she said was really good and very filling. I liked this place a lot, and I will definitely come back when I am in San Antonio next. So this is a place that's probably better for drinks and apps. We were walking all along Southtown and decided to drop in for some dinner. I had the fettuccine Alfredo and it was subpar. A converted convent has found a new life spreading the word of great food to the people. Low lit with international and local decor pepper the historic building. The beef and lamb burgers were both enjoyed, but the lamb received the edge. The Beirut Flashback was just that- a Vaseline memory of tastebuds past. The location is this places upside. The old church is gorgeous and a lot of potential. The restaurant however is kind of a stain. The food was really sub par. The tortillas were the quality of a store brand, the beans were okay but very salty and dry. The salsa's spicy ness was non existent and your only other option is an old bottle of chalula or Tabasco. The mimosa was weirdly powdery, powdered oj? Service was really lazy. Our server was snarky, pushy and not plus. I haven't been to Liberty Bar since they moved to this location many years ago. The restaurant is located in a former convent, so it definitely has a unique atmosphere. Whether you are out for a casual meal with friends, or looking for a unique date night, this is the place for you. We had the falafel pita and the grilled portobello sandwich. The falafel pita, was just so-so. The falafel was a bit dry and was kind of on the bland side. However, the hummus and tabbouleh were both delicious. The portobello sandwich was amazing, and my mouth is watering now as I write this! The mushroom was grilled to perfection, and the toppings were all fresh and flavorful. The sauerkraut added a nice tangy touch, and the gruyere cheese was melted perfectly. I also had the potato salad, which was also great. I like that this place has its own parking lot; always a plus when downtown. The interior is unique with a good blend of old and stylish furnishings. What a cute spot! I've passed by this pink house on the corner several times, but never got around to trying it until recently. For some reason, I always assumed they just had drinks but they are a full-blown restaurant and bar. And the menu is extensive! We started with the meatball appetizer, and... these were maybe some of the best meatballs I've had. It was served in tomato sauce with toast and it was gone within minutes. The homemade fettuccine caught my eye, and I tried the Alfredo sauce and added shrimp. It was tasty and the shrimp were nice and big as well. For us, the drinks were a little hit or miss. We had a couple of beers on draft which were fine, but they weren't very cold. A friend ordered a Moscow mule and it was served in a glass and not a copper mug. However, I tried a cocktail called the Tango, and it was really good! It was a grapefruit & rosemary drink with tequila and aperol. The food came out of the kitchen undercooked and cold - no way to serve tenderloin (ordered medium rare), mashed potatoes and vegetables. It was returned to the table with the steak a little over-cooked, the mashed potatoes good and the vegetables too oily. One dinner on the table being eaten and the other back and forth, kitchen to table to kitchen to table - we are not having dinner together! The server did her job and was not unpleasant, but she was so matter-of-fact, robotic about serving. She did the minimum required, ineffectual. It was so loud that my wife and I had to lean into the table to hear one another, to have dinner conversation. Not a very good way to spend dinner or my money. Several years ago, we'd come to Liberty Bar and had a nice dinner - it was loud upstairs and staff was nice enough to move us downstairs. I love the exterior of this pastel pink building, with equally cool interior decor. The food is a bit on the pricier side, given the quantity and quality, but it is yummy nonetheless. I got the Puntas Norteñas, which is indeed spicy (but not overly so). To be honest, it is not worth the $23 price tag by any means, but the flavors were good and the ingredients tasted fresh. Seeking comfort food and going through my mental rolodex, I recalled an old favorite that I hadn't visited in a while so off to Liberty Bar I go. With all the downtown road construction I had to take a few detours so plan accordingly. For first time patrons, if you enter in through the front entrance there is a large staircase you will have to take to get to the upstairs' tables/bar but on the side of the building there is a ground level elevator that you can take to the second floor. It will open to the upstairs bar where you can enjoy a drink or head the hostess stand and check-in. After being seated, I review the menu and decide to start off with a Rye Old Fashion (and they ask you what Rye to use and show you what they have in stock), house made breadbasket, and the meatballs. For my main course, I order the Fettuccini Alfredo w/shrimp added. My drink and the appetizers came out quickly so let's go. My Old Fashion was well-made with the correct amount of bitters and simple syrup along with an orange rind, luxardo cherry and large rock. Perfect! The meatball appetizer consisted of four pork-based balls that were served in a light marinara sauce. There were cooked well but the marinara could have used more seasoning to give it kick. The breadbasket consisted of their house made sourdough that was slightly toasted/charred on the grill that came with rosemary butter. The butter was a nice touch and the bread was nicely toasted. Lastly, I decide to have dessert and go and old favorite, their buttermilk chess pie w/Mexican chocolate ice cream. I don't normally order buttermilk pie but I have tried theirs's before and it's a winner. It has a nice custurdy texture that is delicious and the Mexican chocolate ice cream just took it over the top. Well played LB! This was my second time coming to liberty bar; the first time I went I ordered a drink and appetizer. The second time I came I ordered a Margherita Pizza and it did not disappoint. I was seated immediately in the bar area and greeted by multiple staff members. They give you a glass of ice and a carafe of water when seated. Tye menu looks pretty good and there's a plethora items to choose from. The wait time for the pizza wasn't that long and service was great. I can't wait to go back. Peace read more

This was a fairly large family group and the server did an excellent job. I like the setting and the history. Just an interesting restaurant. We started with two appetizers for the table, QUESO DE CABRA CON PILONCILLO and PEDRO'S FRIED CHICKPEAS. The Queso De Cabra was particularly good and I highly recommend. The Chickpeas were average compared to others I have had in the past. Across the table, there were several burgers and all liked them. My review will focus though on the two entrees that my wife and I ha. We had the Shrimp Tacos and the Puntas Nortenas. Both of them were excellent and flavorful. But they were also both what I would consider small portions for the prices, particularly the Puntas Nortenas. I am not someone who wants giant American size portions, but I do expect value for the money, and did not find that with these. Restaurant is worth a visit, but will not likely return. read more
