This was my first time eating at the Liberty Bar and we went for brunch. The variety of the menu was good so I had a hard time choosing what to order. I chose the chicken salad sandwich and I was not disappointed by the taste or serving size. Delicious and flavorful homemade chicken salad with large chunks of chicken on grilled bread. I loved how the bread was crunchy on the outside but still tender in the middle. The breakfast plates that came out looked appetizing as well with very generous portions. The servers all seemed knowledgeable about their offerings and very friendly. The building is also so interesting and eclectic nestled in Southtown. It was previously a convent I believe so the wood work and floors have been restored. The bar is gorgeous and they even use some of the benches that I presume came with the building. Interesting place with a lot of history. In town for the Demo Show so a group of 5 needed food. The Liberty Bar was close to our hotel so opted for it. Service was good and attentive. The history of the place was amazing. Beers on tap were limited and no Stout or dark beers. (It is March and there is a significant dark beer drinking holiday coming up.)a couple of us had the Salmon which was very tasty. The green pesto style sauce was great. One had the margarita pizza and it was rated as OK. One had the chicken which he stated was great and one had the pasta which he said tasted good but the sauce was too thin. I don't think it's very kid friendly but they are nice to kids if that makes sense. but every time we come, my son doesn't like any of the food so I stop bringing him my wife and I love the drinks. I've been to Liberty Bar for Brunch many times and have always leaned more on the breakfast side of things when ordering. However this time I decided to switch it up and go for a lunch item - I was not disappointed! We went on a Saturday around 11:30am, which I was surprised to see it wasn't packed. Usually there's a wait of about 45 minutes to an hour and I don't think they take reservations, so if you're planning on heading here for the weekend Brunch, I suggest going at an odd time or plan ahead to wait. I ordered the Portobello Sandwich, it was so delicious with the gruyere cheese on sourdough bread, and the sauerkraut added so much flavor I was blown away by! 0 star if I could. The place was not busy, just 3 of us and 4 at the bar. We waited 18 min for the server, but no one came. I had to go to her to ask if she can take our order. It was about an hour before we got food. Steak tastes old like sitting in the fridge too long before cooking. We had to send it back. But charged us anyway for the mashed potato and spinach sides. We are always on the hunt for the best B-marys around the area we may be at. Well , they weren't the best, but far from the worse. Wonderful! It's great any time of day. We went for dinner. Made a reservation. We walked in and were greeted by a smiling face who led us to our table. Our server was kind and the ambiance was amazing. We were sat in the corner of one of there dining rooms, next to two bookshelves full of cookbooks and others. Food was Wonderful! I had the pot roast. Absolutely amazing. The potatoes were tender and so was the meat. I added a bit of salt, but for a dish like that, I would prefer not enough salt as opposed to too much. My wife got the fettuccine Alfredo and loved it. I got a freshly squeezed (to order) orange juice which was obviously delightful. My wife got the limeade and she liked it as well. Went for brunch on Saturday. Attentive and genial service from Alejandro. As a matter of fact, all the employees were so friendly and welcoming. The manager Craig replied to my yelp question about parking within minutes. That responsiveness is very rare and was a strong show of hospitality that made us decide to come. Parking is on the side of building, and also on the gravel across the street. I have to say there was alot that I instantly loved and that is original. The venue and vibe, for example, is uptown casual, a mixed crowd but a good helping of the smart set. The staff keeps it comfy so you can come as you are. I had the omelette luego. It had zuchinni, onions, tomato, and gruyere. They cook the egg then fold it around the veggies. I prefer my omelette integrated but it was still good. I opted for no black beans, and requested double "ranchero" potatoes. The sourdough toast with apricot marmelaide was a nice compliment! The "ranchero" potatoes are sort of saucy or stewey, not roasted. I did not like. However, my companion, who ordered the "simple breakfast," eggs, sausage, potatoes, and toast, traded me. I ate his roasted taters and he ate my saucy ones. So it worked out! We shared a thick slice of French toast for "dessert." It was delicious! When Alejandro mentioned that all the breads and desserts were made in house, I wanted more. So I ordered a slice of apple pie and coconut pineapple cake to go. I am furious right now and deeply upset that I wasted gas to drive here and $100 on what is one of the worst dining experiences of my life!! Years ago we visited Liberty Bar and always loved it so to celebrate my new job we decided to revisit this place but it was a poor decision!! Service was ABYSMAL!!! 10 minutes to even get acknowledged, had to ask for silverware and never did get a glass for my beer! My husband just pounded his water and gave me his glass! We began with the roast garlic and bread and that was good, just as I remembered it!! The kale chips were okay - a little greasy and in need of salt. The mains were bad. My daughter got a grilled cheese which was just solid chucks of unmelted cheese - if the waitress had bothered to come anywhere near our table I would have sent it back! The fries were overcooked and my husbands lamb burger was certainly not medium. We had always liked the Geranium cream so ordered that for dessert - it was HORRIBLE!! I told my husband we should send it back but for some reason he appeared to like it! It was warm which is not good for a dairy item and just appeared to be a stodgy mass of cream cheese with a hint of flavor!! Add lukewarm beer, warm to the touch root beer and the fact that we sat the entire meal with empty appetizer plates on our table - we were not offered drink refills until the end when clearly she did not really want to get drinks as she already had the receipt in her hand ! I feel sick from the one bite of the nasty warm dessert right now and sick to my stomach that I wasted money and gas to drive to this meal! A quick peak at my Yelp will show that I mostly give out 4/5 stars.... so yes it was that bad!! Will not return! read more

Great place for a last minute brunch! We were actually in line for Guenther House, but couldn't wait two hours. Instead, we decided to check out Liberty Bar. There were seating availabilities and a staff to get us seated right away. It did take a little extra time for us to get our drink orders in, but no complaints. Food came out in a timely manner compared to time to order and everything was delicious. I recommend the eggs Benedict which comes with extra thin and crunchy fries that are my favorite! Also, can't go wrong with the french toast that was soaked for 48 hours! We felt like fatties, but well worth it. I definitely recommend brunch here with the quiet ambience and great food. read more

DINNER REVIEW: "Meh. I've experienced better" is the perfect descriptor of my dinner experience at Liberty. I know this place is a Southtown staple but I just wasn't blown away or wowed by the food or service. I came in on a week night for dinner because I found myself with a random craving for pot roast and they were the only place I could find near me that had it on the menu. We were immediately seated upstairs. I loved the homey ambiance (and had to giggle when I saw the "dont steal the books" sign). It was somewhat busy at dinner time but the place wasn't slammed...but it took fooooreeever for our waitress to greet us, bring drinks and food out, bring the bill, etc. Not sure why. But when it was time for the bill we honestly thought she just forgot about us because it took 15+ minutes for her to bring it out after we asked for it-no exaggeration. As for the food, for an appetizer we ordered the Minguichi because nothing sounds tastier than queso featuring goat cheese, feta, cream cheese, parmesan, bell peppers, and poblano, right? In my head I imagined a cheesy, flavor overload for my mouth...what we got instead was just bland, regular ol' tasting queso. So that was a disappointment. For my entree, to satisfy my pot roast craving I went with the Pot Roast Bowl...which was just fine. The pot roast was really dry and the broth bland. It was a good portion size but for "meh" food. I know it's supposed to be one of their most popular signature dishes but based on my serving I didn't see why. Awesome Environment and very creative food. Watch the address close because it's not obvious this is the right location, as it looks like an old Convent which is exactly what it is. Painted bright pink concrete walls will greet you. Being a Sunday at late lunch only the upstairs was open but there is ample seating downstairs for busier times. Nice long bar with just about any kind of alcohol you can imagine and a very fun creative menu. Grab a book and sit down to read if you liked as there are plenty in book shelves on the walls. The only reason why I didn't rate it a perfect five was due to the service. It really wasn't very busy but we had a hard time finding our waiter when we needed him. He seemed to be tired and didn't make any suggestions about the menu or seemed excited to be there. Other than that it was a great experience and we definitely will be back. read more

Liberty Bar is a true South Alamo gem! Don't get confused by the name; even though it's called a "bar", this place is more of a restaurant/brunch place than an actual bar. The building itself is beautiful! I don't know the history behind it, but the architecture and design is splendid. They have an open kitchen in the second floor where you can see your food being prepared. I've only being here for their weekend brunch, and it's always been great. All of the ingredients they use are locally sourced and fresh. The food portions are not "Texas size", but more like a real portion, which I love because I hate wasting food. During my last visit here I order the Eggs Benedict, which came out boil hard, but after pointing it out to the manager they brought me a new plate and it was DELICIOUS! The hollandaise sauce was full of flavor, the eggs were cooked to perfection, and the ham was amazing too. I would definitely recommend everyone to book a table through the Yelp App, because this place can get really crowded during the weekends and lunch hours. In the King William location for lunch..... a nice selection of the specials,, except they aren't...$38 for a palm sized steak with a small scoop of potatoes.....are you kidding me...on the "lunch specials" paper flyer, but NOT a special. It seems as though they are still figuring that all out. We went over this past weekend and got on the waitlist but their systems are off as they don't seem to have a host/hostess and their waitstaff are left to figure out who gets seated, when and where. Of course, we will always be patient with wait staff these days as they are figuring out how to work in this new environment. There drinks are phenomenal, we got the mimosas and bloody Maria's. We stopped here for drinks because they were one of the few places that were open before noon. The staff was very friendly and the place was inviting. I had the sangria and my husband just had white wine but they had a nice list of cocktails as well. I'm only giving 4 stars becuase I only had an appetizer but the appetizer definitely gets 5 STARS! They said it was one of their house specialties. Goat cheese in a chili pepper and piloncillo sauce. Very original and absolutely delicious! I love to cook and the woman in the kitchen was even kind enough to tell me how to make the sauce. If we come back to San Antonio, we will certainly try some more things on their menu. Pretty lousy dinner and experience! The waiter and the food were not the best. Best appetizers ever, however the entrees were a disaster! Unfortunately, will not be going back anytime soon! Table of 8 work party - the entrees came out two at a time. The waiter said it was to help the kitchen not get overwhelmed. But what happened instead the first two people got meal and by the time last two came out more than half of us were done. Not fun eating in front of people waiting on their food. super lame experience. Also a few of us were not very impress with the entrees personally my burger was dry and hard as a rock. Alcohol was ordered but not delivered timely to the point we wanted more but he never came back to get more orders.
