This place is super cute. If you drive by you will definately miss it cause the entrance is super small. The lady who works there is super cheerful and nice. Really cool bubbly personality. The inside is very cozy laid back vibe and the artwork in the walls is really cool. They make their own chai tea so I tried it for the first time and it was delicious. What i really liked was that the barista put all these different cups in front of me and asked which one spoke to me. I thought that was great. While I was sitting and drinking my tea a few people came in and the barista (owner?) knew them by name and their drink and even chatted with them for a bit. Cute little cafe in Renton that my wife and I checked out last week during Renton's first Date Night event. We went in for a coffee, ended up with an amazing tea made with help milk that has since had me ordering coffee/teas with it at other places I've visited since and two vegan sandwiches! Vegan items aren't listed on the menu but just ask-they are there! The owner herself was working the counter and was delightful to chat with. While we were there a homeless guy came in asking if she had any food she could give him, without hesitation she gave him a bag of donuts. The very kind gesture brought tears to my eyes. I don't live in Renton but next time I'm in the area I will for sure stop by this cafe. I wouldn't rule out taking a trip there just support this business. A great place to stop and have coffee and a panini. The cafe is small, but the people are so nice that you'll want to go there. The coffee was great - we had an Americano, an iced mocha, and a cappuccino. The paninis were excellent and you get your choice of several different mustards to put on it. I had the turkey and swiss with cranberry mustard. Yum!! There is seating outside as well as inside. We'll definitely go back the next time we're in Seattle. read more

I've never written a bad review for a cafe, maybe because I don't think it's that hard to be a good cafe since you're not selling all that much. I feel like I need to help bring the rating a little lower just because it was so high that I was somewhat deceived into coming here tonight. I know good reviews are not a guarantee and for some reason or other, a place gets reviewed by some tasteless people! Anyway, I come in as a scruffy-looking guy comes out. Immediately, the barista explains to me that a cup of coffee on the counter is for that guy and that he'd be back any minute, none of which has to do with me. I asked if he was a local, and she said yes, and I noticed over the course of the hour or two I was there that many of the people coming in were locals, and tended to be haggard, perhaps homeless, and even mentally ill. Before I could even order, because we had been talking about that other guy's coffee, she suggested coffee for me. I told her I don't drink coffee in the afternoons, so she then suggested decaf, but I told her I like tea. I asked her if they use matcha powder for the green tea latte, and she wasn't sure, but proceeded to start making it anyway even though I never said I wanted it. I decided on the chai tea latte, and she pulled out a mug that said "Coffee is better when shared," and I jokingly said "You just really want me to have coffee, don't you?" and she said, "No, that's just the one I chose," and later "I get to choose the cup." She was friendly, yet very naive and ignorant. Kept talking loudly to the local customers, even sitting down with them, giving them her jacket, and being generally annoying and unprofessional. Unfortunately, the chai tea latte was disgusting...it wasn't even a latte, since she basically steeped a chai tea bag and added some almond milk. It was super bitter and even when I asked for more sweetener, it was sour-tasting, nothing I've ever experienced with chai. She offered to put more milk in it, but I told her I couldn't drink it...no point in masking the shit out of the flavor. I asked for a green tea latte, and when I tasted it, it was super bitter again. When I brought it back to her, she told me there a shot of espresso in it, and I told her I didn't ask for one. She says that's how they make it. It was like a page out of "White People Nightmare Scenarios." She finally made a matcha using the directions she followed on the packet, and even insistently pointed at it to show she followed the directions and that it wasn't her shop when I asked for more sugar again, but it turned out more like a matcha soup since the directions called for water instead of milk and it was a bitter powder in my opinion. She kept apologizing and saying she felt bad I didn't like my drink. I told her it wasn't her fault, the drink recipes were just bad. I stayed there for awhile to work on my application. She kept talking in an obnoxious voice and complaining about her issues to a local customer, and it was hard for me to concentrate. Then, a mentally ill white guy shows up who the barista later says is a "total creep" to the next customer, and later a mentally ill black guy shows up and starts bothering me and I have to say "I don't want to talk right now." I get up to leave shortly after, but I am never coming back to this freakshow. read more

Liberty Cafe is one of the reasons why Downtown Renton is so great. On days when I'm working from home, I'll bring my laptop down to the cafe for an hour or so and listen in on the locals chit-chat with the friendly staff while sipping on my not-too-sweet mocha. There are lots of great locally-owned coffee shops in Renton and to each their own, but Liberty Cafe suits me best. I love the local art on the walls, the books to lend, the 1911 building, and so much more that give this place the perfect "down-to-earth Pacific Northwest Cafe" ambiance. read more

Whenever I go into this place I feel like I'm stepping into Luke's Diner, or some persevered relic of the 90's - and that's exactly the feeling I want in a coffee shop. I hadn't been down there for the last year because my routine had been interrupted due to the pandemic, and I was so happy to see that Liberty Cafe was still there and burning strong. The owner is a kind hearted, hard working person that will always go out of her way to make her guests feel welcome and strike up a conversation. The space is in a little nook and it's easy to miss, but it's hard not to miss it when you realize what a gem this place really is. By the way, the drip is great and the owner makes a killer roast beef and cheddar pressed sandwich. I can't say enough good things about Liberty cafe! read more

This place definitely deserves a 5-star rating and I have more than 5 reasons why. After just moving from Seattle to Renton a year ago, I"ve been on a lookout for a coffeeshop with the Seattle-feel to it. Grunge, comfy, good service, and good coffee. Well I've found out! (1) It was my first time here and the friendly owner Mike welcomed me and gave my friend & me free drinks. He found out it was our first time and refused to let us pay for our Americanos! (2) I said I wanted my Americano sweetened, and I don't know what magic he added to it but it loooked like honey & sugar in the raw. It was perfectly sweet. (3) Great prices. It was free..but I did check out the menu and he doesn't rip you off. (4) Vibe. It definitely has a vibe local feel to it. Nothing fancy by any means, but it doesn't need to be. (5) Service. Mike made us incredible drinks, and then brought over water an hour later because we were still there. I swear he knows everyone there, and everyone in Renton. He's a friendly guy! (6) Specialty. He said he has a Mike's Specialty drink and I'm always a sucker for a place with "their own specialty." I'll definitely be back for the Mike Specialty! Can't wait to go back! read more

I'm confused by all the rave reviews. It's the same address, and the pictures are of the place where I went, and yet, as much as I wanted to love this place, there was nothing to love. 1. Most importantly: the coffee tasted burned--more so than at Starbucks. 2. Seems like the kind of place that the health department should site for (at the very least) "not excluding unnecessary persons from food prep areas." It was impossible to tell who worked there and who was hanging out, but all the people who made trips into the kitchen area couldn't possibly have been employees of such a tiny place. Also, it didn't seem like the "barista" washed her hands after coming in from smoking--she seemed to spend most of her time outside as well. 3. Sketchy atmosphere. OK, I might be a bit biased because I think I have a crush on this man! His coffee is fantastic, he is so friendly and fun and is really all about helping his community grow. What more can you ask for? Oh, a coffee brewed and designed with love! Go on the first Friday of the month when them and the businesses close by hold a Downtown Renton block party. Last time they had a DJ there, had some pizza and an art show with local artists. If you are brave tell Mike to just surprise you, and don't watch! Do you like a friendly man, and good coffee? Well, wait no longer. Go to Liberty Cafe located on south 3rd. He's doors are open 9 to 9. You may have seen him at Jet City in the past. Anyway, when it comes to coffee, Mike knows what he's doing. He also takes time to make the drinks, which shows he care's versus rushing them, for the sake of killing the line. Mike brewed up some Uber Yummy Cafe Mocha. Its was nice to unwind & catch up Online using their Free Wi-Fi while sippin on a Warm Drink when its Below Freezing outside! This is a nice friendly shop in Downtown Renton, WA - 5 Yelp Stars! Everyone inside was having goodtime conversations. You'll see alot of Renton Locals, good people :) ***On Monday nights at 6pm they host Magic The Gathering Drafts/Sealed games, not too many Cafes do that! =D read more

I've already given this place a 5 star rating, but I have to share an awesome experience I had recently. After a film screening, I went out for a cup of joe with my dear friend Chelsea. We walked in right behind a family. While they were getting their orders placed, I couldn't help but be amused by their beautiful children. Particularly one kid who was sitting on a high chair - he dropped his toy and I picked it up for him... didn't really think anything of it. After they were done, Mike took our orders then we took a seat. After about an hour of awesome conversation we went up to the counter to pay for our drinks. Mike said they were already paid for and proceeded to hand us a post-it that said "Enjoy this Random Act of Kindness." How awesome! To that family in front of us, you rock. Go Renton. read more

Is there a sixth star? This is by far the best cafe I've been to. I came here with my friend just to grab a cup of coffee and to catch up on things. The man behind the counter, which I am assuming was the owner based on the other reviews, was extremely friendly. He helped us out with choosing our drinks and when we told him we weren't ordering to go, he told us to have a seat and relax. My friend and I snagged the seats by the door and grabbed a chess set from under the booth seats across the room. We were there for over 2 hours and during the time, the owner served us our drinks, made conversation with us, and got us two cups of water after we finished our drinks. Based on my experience, I want to say that this cafe is tailored towards the experience of a customer. Making a huge profitable business is not the priority which is great because the customer experience is phenomenal. I highly recommend this cafe and I recommend that you get into a conversation with the man behind the counter! read more

We've been looking for a good coffee shop in Renton, to rival our Seattle favorites. We found it at Liberty Cafe. I ordered a doppio that was as good as any I've had at Stumptown, Vita, Lighthouse. Deborah had a soy latte, also tasty. And this cat Mike is muy cool; with a muy groovy buildout design for his cafe. Mike also turned us onto a new slant on graphical novel from Scotland boys. Dear Liberty Cafe in Renton: thanks for letting me be your newest raving fan!! Finally made it to Liberty Cafe last week, after living/working so close for four years. This is the spot!! Mike is every bit as kind and helpful as the other reviewers give him credit for. I was meeting friends late in the afternoon and originally said no to coffee. He genuinely looked hurt that I wasn't going to try his brew. Then my brain kicked in...premium seating (small cafe) and you aren't ordering? Help a brother out! My standard drink is a caramel machiatto with soy milk, but I've heard about Mike's mixologist skills and asked him to surprise me. He brought me something that looked so thick and creamy I thought I'd need a spoon. My drink was really, really good. It wasn't bitter like my normal fix. It actually had flavor. Yes, he brought out water when we had finished our coffees, which was thoughtful. A business that pays attention to it's customer...I like the concept. If you live in Renton (or close by) please stop in and support this small business. I'm sure the owner loves reading all of these nice reviews, but $$ is always good for paying the bills. read more
