I can never make time to visit their newer location at the downtown Waterfront, so I instead took some time after work on a Tuesday around 3:30pm to drive down to Renton instead to get coffee here. My first thought getting in here was: how do they have so much real estate in here yet still make it relaxing to stay and do your WFH stuff in? It's wide, there's tons of tables and seating, and the menu - though a little hard to read since it's behind the counter. Music isn't too loud either so even more relaxing! Staff were quick in making drinks, or just long enough so you can enjoy the calming effects of the overall surroundings. I got their purple rain, which has ube hints, juniper, espresso and whole milk. This is one of their summer drinks but they still use their own brand of coffee for this one. Strong and crisp coffee here while the ube is brought out just enough to not be covered completely by the coffee. It's a sweet, soothing layer with whole milk added to make the drink a little thicker and uniform with the coffee. I felt like I was getting a sip and smell of the outside leaves with the juniper as well, so a ton of feelings in one cup that I downed in less than 3 minutes! They had two options for pour over and some interesting syrup options. There wasn't any gluten free or vegan options for food when I arrived. Ordered a pour over, fenugreek latte (order it, it's amazing) with oat milk, blueberry muffin and beef curry pastry. I have been to several Boon Boona Coffee locations and they are consistently memorable from their knowledgeable and kind staff to tasty and flavorful food and drinks. And have a great knowledge of their menu and offerings. The beans are all from Africa and not only is Boon Boona cultivating community within the Seattle area, they are doing the same with African coffee growers. I've been going to Boon Boona on & off for years at this point and have happily seen them try new layouts, new breakfast sandwich options, new faces come and go but one thing stays the same - the vibe. Life situations kept me from making my way to the shop for a year or so, but when I walked in I was greeted with a smile and a "it's been a while!" The coffee is reasonably priced and imo - best in the area. It's consistent and while I'm a sucker for the 12oz cold brew - I've gone off script a few times and have always been pleased. I've got family that comes into town fairly often, and almost every morning they ask to go because they think about it when they're at home in Chicago. There's plenty of seating, tho it's sometimes so bumping (because it's a great spot!) it can be hit or miss if you can stick around and enjoy the vibe. But generally I've had good luck over the years setting up at a table and chatting with friends & fam before a hike, enjoying the morning with my pup doing some socialization training or throwing a few emails around to my corporate overlords. What a great spot! We went on a Friday late morning making our way out to Portland. There was a little of a line to get to the counter for service. The strawberry matcha was delightful and we ordered the breakfast sandwiches on ciabatta bread! They were amazing and oh so hot and gooey with the chipotle sauce. I will preface this review by saying that I am not a coffee drinker, but my cousin who was visiting from out of the country is and for a full week she tried tons of coffee from all over the Seattle area and Boon Boona was her absolute favorite. She drinks her coffee black and she got the drip coffee which was Bereka that day and she loved it. The cafe space is huge and super cute with lovely art on the walls. There's plenty of seating - bar seating by the large windows and big tables and smaller tables. The baristas/employees were so kind and helpful. The first barista we had answered all our questions. A different barista helped my cousin pick out beans to take back home with her and she said he was super nice and helpful. She ultimately went with this special roast done in collaboration with Blackfish Distillery in Auburn. The coffee cups are super cute. There is free wifi. The place is super clean. There are clean restrooms. They take BOTH card and cash. They also offer a variety of pastries and they had breakfast sandwiches including one that was a Beyond Meat patty, which is what we ordered and it was good! They have non-coffee options too and I got the iced matcha with almond milk. It was good but FYI it's not sweetened - in case that's your thing. My cousin loved the coffee and the ambiance and the friendliness. I also loved this place but I really appreciated the hospitality from the staff the most!! We felt so welcome here. I remember coming to this spot pre Covid when they just opened as I worked in the neighborhood and it was always such a nice place to spend time & get some lunch or coffee. I came here recently on a Sunday evening (& really at any time of day its a lively scene) to meet with a friend & had one of the coffees on their holiday menu (Chocolate Hazelnut Latte) & it was delicious and everything that the name said it was :) Basically a hot chocolate with caffeine! I went to the counter and asked the barista if they make 12 ounce iced drinks. He assured me that they did and even showed me a 12 ounce cup. I ordered an iced 12 ounce latte and when they made the drink, it came out in a 16 ounce cup. I prefer the 12 ounce cup because if they use the 16 ounce cup it tastes too milky and not enough coffee taste. I asked the guy who handed me the coffee if this was a 12 ounce cup. He said yes it is. I said this looks like the 16 ounce cup. He said "well it's 12 ounces of milk and we just leave room for the ice and don't charge you for the ice." Wow, thanks for not charging me for ice after I already paid $10 for the drink. And, you're missing the point. I want a 12 ounce cup with milk and ice in it because that is a better ratio than a 16 ounce cup. If I'm paying $10 for a drink, I'd like to actually get what I like. We got the chai latte with Oat milk, it was a very spicy blend if you do/don't love that. It was very tasty but could have had a smidge more sweetness (in my opinion). We also got an espresso which came with a small side of seltzer water, nice! We also got to choose from two options for the espresso which we appreciated. The coffee was delicious. We loved the coffee so much we got a pound of the Ethiopian to take home. Appreciate the size of the place as there was plenty of seating. Wish the furniture was more comfy. Looks like they roast the beans in-house and the operations are out in the open. They had some pastries on the counter (not too sure about other food options) and they even serve wine and beer. Boona Boona Boona Coffee is one of my top 5 favorite coffee shops/holds a top 5 favorite coffee drink in Washington. Main reason why they have remained in my top 5 is the taste of their coffee. Each sip has a soft bitter taste, resembling dark chocolate. My usual go to is the Berbere Mocha, so it has a bit of a nice kick. I usually have it with oat milk. NOTES: When I visited on a weekday morning, it wasn't busy and there was seating openly available. By the time I left, it was packed and seats were taken outside. Whether it be a weekday or a weekend, there is always one parking spot I can easily find near the shop. It is all parallel parking. If you don't like parallel parking, there is a parking lot close by, but if you stay too long you might get towed as the parking lot is mainly for another restaurant.
