Liberty Tattoo is the most unpretentious tattoo shop in northern California. Bill and Lori are talented artists, and true professionals. The office entrance is spacious and comfortable--my husband likes to lounge on the comfy sofa and watch the History Channel on the big TV when I am getting hours of work done. The tattoo area is very clean, and has a great view of historic Folsom. Bill always pops in a movie to keep my mind off the tattoo. I was referred to Bill by a mutual friend and he did a large(to me) side/back piece. It's beautiful and exactly what I wanted. He's a great artist, a true master of his craft. It may seem odd to give a positive review since I was turned away, but I really appreciated the honesty and integrity of this shop. First, the shop itself was clean and pleasant, very different from other places I've been. I met with Lori and discussed the tattoo I had hoped to get. She was very upfront about why it wouldn't work, but never made me feel foolish for requesting it. She took the time to look at other options and discuss what may or may not work and why. She gave me great information and a lot to think about going forward. Sure, I was disappointed, but not nearly as disappointed as I would have been with a bad tattoo! Bill did three cover ups for me. I'm very happy with all three. Definitely a different vibe in this shop compared to other shops I've visited. Lori is super organized and the entire process was very professional. Bill is a talented veteran in the biz and sets appropriate expectations about what is doable (in my case he was doing the cover ups). His hourly rate is more than some others, but well worth it. I've been to other shops for myself and friends where it's not super clean, people are partying, artists are unprepared or no shows, double booking clients, etc. You won't have to deal with any of that nonsense here. Went in to try and get a piercing instead of kindly being redirected to a tattoo parlor with piercers available my friend and I were treated like we completely didn't belong. My friend then tried to explain a tattoo she wanted when again the woman acted as if we were not good enough to be in her shop. She told us her establishment isn't the kind of place to do a hand tattoo, and maybe a "establishment without morals" who would except any money thrown at it could help us. Not impressed. Called the studio and talked to Lori. We stopped by the studio to talk further about our ideas. She totally blew us off. She was not interested in doing the work we wanted. Told us to look at her portfolio to see if we could adjust our ideas to something smaller and walked away. We asked about doing portrait work and she said she would refer us to Bill but FYI he wasn't accepting new clients until August so perhaps we should look elsewhere. We checked out Folsom City Ink and were totally impressed. We have since had two tattoos designed and completed at the FCI. read more

I am perplexed by the poor reviews and had a completely different experience. I finally decided to get my first ink just over a week ago and it was a decision that was a long time coming to commit to. I contacted Lori to set up a consultation and Lori was completely courteous and set up an appointment to look over my design. At my consultation she was honest, realistic and took the time to go over my design and find the right size as well as being attentive to ensure I knew exactly what my design would entail. She had it drawn up and we set an appointment within the week! Both Lori and Bill are professionals. They take their artistic profession serious and pay full attention to the clients that they are working on. Lori's attention to detail and skill was a perfect match and she did a beautifully flawless piece. It amazes me that someone wouldn't take heart that the work they are doing is permanent and the fact that they take steps to ensure that their focus is 100% on the client they are working on is a positive, professional courtesy. At my appointment I was comfortable, relaxed and chilled out with my headphones while Lori worked away. I am hooked, I admit. I am already contemplating my next piece and my first is still healing. I am so happy with the quality, design and work that Lori put into my first tattoo. As far as location and finding the place. Well it is in a old town venue. Go anywhere that you have an old town feel and you will find streets lined with clustered addresses, second story locations and it may take some extra steps to locate versus a modern business park feel. I personally love Old Folsom and actually any downtown areas require showing up a bit early to allow for parking and walking. read more

Upon walking in, the studio looks more like a model home than a tattoo parlor. Bill and Lori are amazing and friendly people and will certainly make you feel welcome. They may not have a lot of time to chat if you just drop in because they are ALWAYS booked. Idk why it has taken me so long to write a review... I had my tattoo done by Bill about a year ago and i am constantly complemented on the work, a large black and grey pirate ship on my left upper arm. Its extremely difficult to find an GREAT black and grey artist and Bill is just that. He gets booked out MONTHS in advance due to the quality of his work and EXCELLENT reputation so you should be willing to wait 4 to 6 months for an appointment. Walking into this place is not at all like walking into any other shop. Quiet, clean, and amazingly professional. Bill's artwork is absolutely stunning. I tried my best to describe what I wanted and it was like he read my mind! Another thing I love is that when you have an appointment your time with them really is YOUR time. It's like being royalty! They also really go over aftercare unlike most shops. They even had a handy pamphlet for me that went into detail about what you do and why you do it so you truly understand how to care for your art. Let me start out by saying if nothing else.. Look at the picture I post and judge the work yourself. What I can't exactly express enough and even more so than the work.. Is the amount of respect I have for Bill and Lori the owners and tattoo artists at Liberty. I have had roughly 10 people work on me, and I can absolutely say with 100% certainty I would never go to anyone again other than Bill. We did a full sleeve piece and all I knew going in was I wanted an American flag as well as a Gadsden flag (don't tread on me), and to incorporate the date 9/11/2001 and the number 343 standing for how many firms a gave their lives selflessly on that day. Bill laid it all out, had the vision and I trusted him to do it proud. What I got is 10 times better than I envisioned and let's be honest.. Flags are typically either done well or terrible. Be the judge for yourself as I mentioned I will post some pics here. I get compliments daily from not your average tattoo covered millennial either. Lots of older people who don't even like tattoos will make a point to let me know they don't like them but "they loooove mine" they are always intrigued by my arm and I'm proud as hell to say Bill Liberty at Liberty tattoo in Folsom did it. Another thing to know is he is very busy, not a pick it and stick it walk in type place so if you aren't an avid tattoo getter and want a little star or lips or something like that I'll be honest and say I doubt they would be excited to jump on that. There are many many places to walk in and get a drunken lady bug on your ass and Liberty is not that type of place. With all do respect to anyone who has those tats, I'm good with it, I'm just saying Bill and Lori have been in the industry and been around enough and earned the respect to pick and choose what they do. Honestly any expert in a craft will tell you the same thing and they shouldn't be any different. I'm sure you get the point Bill, Lori, Liberty tattoo is the best tattoo shop I've ever seen.. I haven't even got into the ambience in their shop or the artwork bill does not to mention some of his signature motorcycles upstairs in the shop for you to admire. There isn't music blaring or 10 people standing around waiting or arguing over where they should get the next piercing. This shop is quaint, immaculate, and a real pleasure to step foot in. I "discovered" Liberty Tattoo several (10+??) years ago at the Tattoo Festival at the Sacramento Convention Center where I fell in love with Bill's work and his and Lori's no-nonsense attitude. Bill has done my last few tattoos and Liberty Tattoo is the only shop I would ever consider going to. Bill and Lori are super friendly folks with a beautiful, professional, clean shop and decades of experience. I know several people who exclusively use Bill for their tattoos.
