I am a big fan of Lidl. I frequent another one that's a bit of a distance away. I work in this area though and so I drive home this route all the time. This is a hot up and coming area of Hackensack, and I had very high hopes for this store that just opened recently. But wow I could not have expected to have my hopes so drastically dashed. The store is so poorly maintained compared to the others I go to. For one thing, it is messy. Lidl is always organized - neat and clean. The moment I walked in, I was greeted by the enticing aroma of fresh baked goods yet at that same time the sight of poorly organized piles of sadly wilting fresh produce. There were crushed produce leaves littering the floor, and I had to pick a used plastic bag up off the floor so someone didn't slip on it and go flying. There was a bin of used broken down boxes right next to that before I got to the bakery area. That baking area was the highlight of my visit. It was downhill from there. There were empty and disheveled shelves and displays everywhere. The product boxes were dented and crushed. Many of the non food product boxes were opened or the products out of their wrapping. The place looked so rifled through, it resembled a thrift shop. I realize it might have been busy, and people might be rude, but there weren't crowds of people pushing and shoving through the aisles while I was there. Certainly there was time and opportunity for the staff to straighten the displays and clean up the floor even if there wasn't enough product to restock the shelves. It might also be me but the prices aren't as great as they used to be. Lidl lists the unit prices in terms of per ounce. So $.26 an ounce might sound like a bargain until you do the math and realize it's $4.16 a pound. In most cases, that was far from a deal. I found this to be the case with many things. I actually ended up leaving with nothing at all. In fact, I gave my cart to someone on my way out and didn't even bother to get my quarter back. Hoping these are growing pains and this store ups it game because it is in such a convenient area. But if the prices are really going to be this strange from now on, it's probably not a deal versus the name brands in the supermarket down the block.

I've been to various Paris Baguette locations around Central Jersey, and honestly, I wasn't a huge…read morefan... until recently. Let me explain. At one location I frequented, the coffee had really disappointed me. Once upon a time, their coffee was delicious, with rich, chocolatey notes, but the last few visits left me with bitter, almost burnt-tasting drinks, and no amount of milk could fix it. This was surprising, since they supposedly use LavAzza beans. I also never loved their cakes; I often found them too heavy on icing and light on actual cake. However, on a recent trip while shopping at 99 Ranch Market (which is conveniently right next door), we decided to give Paris Baguette another try and treat ourselves to pastries. I was immediately impressed by their selection and how frequently the display was refilled. Every item was behind a glass case, which felt very clean and hygienic. The cashiers were great at making the hot beverages, and they asked if we had a rewards program with them. We gave them our phone numbers, and it turned out none of us had signed up or that they expired. Here's what we purchased: - Cafe Mocha - 5/5 stars. Perfect balance of espresso and chocolate. The barista even made a heart on top. Although the lid covered it, the gesture was appreciated. - Cold Brew - 5/5 stars. Smooth and refreshing. - Chausson aux Pommes - 4/5 stars. A French apple turnover with a perfectly crisp crust and tender, flavorful apples that weren't mushy. - Croissant Donut - 5/5 stars. Flaky, buttery croissant-like in shape of a donut, filled with custard that was bright due to the citrus, and well-balanced between sweet and savory. - Blueberry & Cream Brioche - 5/5 stars. Their crust was crispy and light. It was an indulgent treat that was well balanced as the custard was rich, soft, and just sweet enough without being heavy. Patrons can help themselves to cream, milk, utensils, and napkins, which is convenient. The seating is roomy and relaxing, perfect for lingering over coffee and pastries. It's located in the Home Depot strip mall. Parking is usually easy on weekdays, but weekends can get a little hectic. Overall, this visit completely changed my opinion of Paris Baguette. The coffee and pastries were impeccable, and the environment made for a pleasant, stress-free experience. Definitely worth a stop if you're nearby.

There's no wall menu and the bakers primary language is Spanish, so I am unable to identify the types of sweet bread. Name or no name, the bread is a sweet choice to supplement your breakfast. They each have a light, puffy, and flaky texture and are great for dipping in your morning cup of Joe. If you aren't craving pastries, there is a lunch selection available. Double wrapped in two soft shells, the tacos are a quick, but satisfying meal. In my opinion, it wasn't necessary to include cucumbers and lime. But, the chopped radishes surprisingly gave the tacos a nice crunch and you can never have enough cilantro and hot sauce. The customers are all that ethnicity, many of them also speaking little to no English. They hit both. It helps a lot to speak Spanish, especially over the fone. But they make it work if all you know is gringo. Huge tortas. Surprisingly good shrimp quesadillas. Proper tacos and birria with the consommé. Refreshing salsa verde and creamy salsa roja. I visited the Bergenfield location on Mother's Day to pick up a cake. There's a parking lot in the back of the store. The interior is small with a few tables/seating available. Very clean, bright, and warm look. It was a busy Sunday morning, but the employees worked quickly and efficiently. Their cake menu has a huge variety of options - fruity flavors, chocolate, Asian-inspired flavors, etc. I ordered the Raspberry Lemon cake (~$45). Yes, their cake prices are on the steeper end... but they are beautifully decorated, elegant, made with high quality ingredients, and freshly baked on-site every day. The cake was packaged in a specially designed box. I loved the functionality of it; it was sturdy with handles for you to hold at the top. It even came with a complimentary cake cutter, matches, and Mother's Day cake topper! My mom and family enjoyed the cake. It was light, fruity, and zesty! Not overly sweet at all. The buttercream frosting was made out of raspberry cream cheese. The cake was moist and fluffy, with a taste similar to lemon pound cake. It had layers of raspberry and lemon filling. It was topped with yellow and pink piping for a vibrant pop of color. I would definitely come back here to get cakes for a special occasion. I would also love to try their decadent pastries and drinks - they have so many options!
