This was an amazing dining experience in every way imaginable. 1. The menu was not ridiculous (length wise), but full of eclectic options (I got the squash soup and the beignets). My friends had crab cake. It was very obvious from the full of amazing flavor that they put a lot of love into their dishes. 2. Drinks were also amazing too... Last week was Annapolis Restaurant Week, so I tried several restaurants for the first time. Light House Bistro is a social enterprise that supports the Annapolis Light House, so you can dine knowing that your dollars support a great cause. The food was great too. For apps, I had the bucket of fries and fried brussels. You already know I'm a sucker for hot, lightly salted, slightly crispy, hand cut fries. I never thought I'd used a mayonnaise based dipping sauce for fries, but I really liked the garlic aioli. I didn't even use the ketchup. The fried brussels were so yummy. How can you go wrong with fried garlic and shallots, and cilantro (one of my favorite herbs)? The peanut dressing paired well with all the flavors and wasn't overpowering at all. I can't believe I hated brussel sprouts as a child. If only people has cooked them properly back in the day I would have developed my love for them much earlier in life. For my entrees, I had salmon and beef bolognese pappardelle. The salmon was perfectly seared and seasoned, and the crust was on point. I wish they would have crusted both sides. Underneath the salmon was lots of yummy goodness: caramelized shallots, leeks, fennel, zucchini, and herb quinoa. On top was avocado butter, which I slattered on the salmon and mixed in with the veggies and quinoa. Technically, this was supposed to be a cheat entree but I didn't feel bad about eating it at all. It was nutritious and delicious. The beef bolognese had red wine braised short ribs in it. I love braised short ribs! The meat, the pasta, the cheese, the flavors...this dish was perfect. I'd definitely try both entrees again, but if I could only have one, it would be the pasta. For dessert, I ordered grilled bread pudding and warm cowboy cookies. Loved the bread pudding, especially with the crème anglaise. The cookies were ok. Just a little crispy but still good. Our server was great too. This place is a keeper. Great business model. Lighthouse Bistro employees many people who have been trained in a job skill or field (culinary) and who are striving for a better life. We stopped in for a quick breakfast and were very happy with our experience. The food was solid, only complaint was grits were undercooked. The chairs are special- they used to be old classroom chairs, as well as other furniture that has been repurposed. The restaurant serves everything from breakfast to Happy Hour to dinner. We'd been meaning to try this place for quite some time, and we are so glad we stopped in! The bar area is very cute and comfortable. The Bloody Mary was delicious, and the bartender said he makes the mix himself. Coffee was very good, so good we wished it'd been topped up. My husband loved his breakfast quesadilla (special), especially the guacamole. My French omelet was also delicious, with good home fries and truly excellent blueberry preserves served with the toast. Ambience: spacious, decorative. Service: hostess sat us by a nice window area. She wasn't cold or warm in manner. However, she didn't ask us whether we wanted brunch or lunch but gave us the brunch menu. Our server had to change our menu to lunch. He carried the same demeanor, not cold or warm. He only checked in with us four times: one, to take the order; two, to bring the foods; and three to ask us if we need anything else and get our check; four, to bring us the check. Maybe we shouldn't expect more for a "fancier" place, eh? And the fact that it was not busy at the time we were there, service was truly sub par. Foods: crab soup (puréed soup, we found our crab meats to be cold); Protein bowl (fresh as expected from farm to table concept); Crabcake burger: the greasy green tomatoes soaked through my buns. Not enough seasoning for what is to be expected from Maryland. It was our own fault for not telling the server any of it. Our hotel caught on fire and this restaurant took us in while we were stuck outside while they handled it. We told them off the bat that we wouldn't be ordering much food and they gave us great service anyways. One person in our party was craving a smoothie, something they don't serve, and they made him one anyways (which he really enjoyed)! We ordered some fries for the table, coffees and one person had a salad for lunch. We were able to continue our business meeting and we very much enjoyed the food we did order (they had a great sauce to dip the fries in). My only complaint was that they did not have a ton of gluten free but you could get by with a salad and some of the breakfast items if necessary. read more

It was hard for me to decide on 3 stars for this one even though I don't see it as a bad rating, but the food didn't quite meet my level of expectation that was set upon entering. They're coming from a good place by offering job opportunities to those who've had a tough break in life and there are things they do well: the woody industrial interior built from donated supplies, the open kitchen concept, the farm to table menu options featuring locally sourced produce, and the overall clean plate presentation of each dish. Though, after settling in, I came to find that everything very much relied upon aesthetic here and that this was made evident by the food. For starters, the Maryland Crab Soup came in a nice white shallow bowl indicative of a fine dining restaurant and looked pleasing to the eye, but upon being eaten, although there was nothing essentially bad about the flavor, I was a bit disappointed with the execution as it tasted like something I could make at home and had no wow factor. It just didn't meet the expectations that other businesses have set in the area that have honed the ingredient of fresh crab and consequently perfected this quintessentially Maryland dish. Similar feelings progressed through my tastings of the Cauliflower Mac-LESS Cheese and Meatloaf entrees. I was particularly saddened by the lack of pasta in the proposed "mac & cheese". I understand what they were going for, but the cauliflower wound up getting lost in a pool of soupy cream and greasy cheese that was altogether kind of off-putting and overtly simple which made it my least favorite dish. The meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans that followed were prepared well, but followed the same pattern of womp-womp-womp and the meatloaf could've used a bit more of the bbq sauce to make it less bland and to cut through the heartiness of the dish. Overall, the food basically made me feel like I was eating at someone's house who knew how to cook which isn't always a bad thing, but I felt that this clashed with the mood set by the restaurant's interior. Our group of 6 stopped here last evening for Dinner. The place was really modern and well done in the decor and ambiance area. We all found items on the menu that appealed to us and were pretty happy with our selections. Our one friend wasn't thrilled to find the center of his salmon raw but they quickly fixed the issue for him. I wasn't expecting the poached egg on my spinach salad (was thinking hard boiled) but I probably didn't read the menu close enough and another might find that to be an upgrade. I was a little bummed that they were out of the pineapple mojito but it didn't ruin my evening. Overall the food was good. We loved the crab soup and flatbread especially and my husband enjoyed the chicken over risotto. We would hit this place again. read more

The service was extremely spotty - waits for coffee refills, etc. We got the bucket of Beignets and they were not great. They were much too oily. This is a wonderful find on West Street, Annapolis. The ambiance is creative as they use donated refurbished chairs from the Naval Academy, lights from Pepco, and other well know Annapolis establishments. Our food was served fast and the waitress was friendly. She kept our glasses filled. The crab melt was good. My friend loved the BLAT flat bread. The French fries are tasty. Make sure to try them. This was our second time eating here for breakfast. Again, the service and food were great. I had an omelet with their home fries and loved it. My son had their Birthday Cake pancakes which fit since it was his birthday. He said they tasted just like a birthday cake. My husband had the blueberry pancakes and was happy. I love this place not only because they give back to the community but because their breakfast good is great. Next time I am going to try and make it for dinner. Ok...so the only reason I gave this four stars is because they just opened and there are still a few things that they need to work out. That being said this was one of the most pleasurable dining experiences my husband and I have had in a very long time. I believe that the restaurant is committed to hiring at risk young men and women to work there and their eagerness to help was certainly apparent. Our server, Tiffany, was friendly and very accommodating. Even when we asked a question about one of the entrees, instead of fumbling for an answer, she politely excused herself to get the correct answer. And the food!! Oh my...it was delicious!! I was the winner with the skirt steak with sage butter and arugula!! Desserts were wonderful as well. Very cool aesthetic with exposed brick and open concept kitchen. This restaurant will only get better as they get their "sea legs". My advice...go now, before the wait list is long as I'm sure it will be! **they have a take out section as well, providing that area of West Street with a much needed place to grab a sandwich or salad as well as coffee, lattes, etc. I am very excited about how West Street is shaping up!!! read more

I think the mission behind this place is great, and I think that with some more time to work out the kinks this place has the potential to be fantastic. The staff seemed a bit confused as to what the kitchen was offering - we were handed paper menus and there were full menus under our chairs, and we got conflicting messages as to what was available at noon on a Saturday - breakfast, lunch, or both. Apparently it was the first time they did this multiple menu thing. Our server (I didn't catch his name) was very friendly and trying very hard, but was a little bit over the top - engaging us in beyond-the-normal level of conversation about or meals, leaning down on the table pretty intensely while taking orders - but again, I'm hoping he's just still learning. I think more attention to keeping our water glasses full would be good. The decor is nice, and the food was pretty tasty. I do hope they add a few more veg-friendly options to the menu - I only saw a margherita flatbread and cauliflower mac & cheese (and probably a salad), but was able to get the Chef's scramble adapted without chicken. It did seem like they have the capacity to have more veg-friendly, non-salad options and I hope to see that in the future. I also tried the "Blushing Bride" cocktail, which was good though very sweet. One friend tried the "White Wedding" and really enjoyed it, and other friends tried different beers that were on the menu. I look forward to going back after they've had some more time to work out the kinks. read more
