I have recently moved to the neighborhood, Bergen Lafayette, and while exploring around on foot, I ended up at The Light Rail Cafe on Randolph Ave. we were warmly greeted by Clara, the manager there, and Mello, one of the bartenders. my boyfriend was with me, and we immediately looked at each other and said "we will be coming here a lot!" the food is delicious, everything we have ordered has been amazing. We ordered the Rasta Pasta tonight. It was bland and flavorless. The shrimp taste boiled instead of grilled. You can see the peppers but there was no spices as Rasta Pasta should have. This is based just on my one time doing take out 3 hours ago. BRUH. Chili bean burger is FIRE. Cajun fries are FIRE. And the happy hour from 7 PM to midnight looks like FIRE. I'M GOING TO FIND OUT. Despite being a ten-minute walk from me, I'm down to go to a bar and leave my well-stocked liquor cabinet on the bench. Pleasant little neighborhood spot. Food is decent - we had a burger, salmon entree, and penne with vodka sauce and all were pretty good, but portion sizes for takeout were on the small side. The corn and shrimp chowder was really good. I know the cafe is owned by a local city councilman and I respect his service to the community. I will say that when picking up a to-go order during the pandemic, the mask rules seemed not to be enforced. There is a sign on the door clearly saying that masks were required inside. There were two customers, men in their late-20s to mid-30s who had their masks down and were leaning on the counter near the counter staffer. This made me feel unsafe for future orders. If the restaurant has a clear policy, please make sure that it is enforced consistently in order to protect your staff and customers. We want to enjoy your food and to feel safe. My co-workers orders from Light Rail almost daily. Every item they have ordered and eaten - "nothing but amazing". I don't usually order in for lunch but I finally caved in and gave their grilled tilapia sandwich with sweet potato fries a try as an early birthday treat. We were able to call in our orders and had them ready by the time we arrived to dine in. My grilled tilapia sandwich honestly was nothing but amazing! Flaky, smokey, well seasoned tilapia filet sandwiched between two buttery, thick, brioche toasts - every bite was a little taste of heaven! The sweet potato fries were well worth the upgrade - crispy and not one bit greasy. Complimented my tilapia sandwich so so well! My waistline is in trouble now since I know this hidden gem is just around the corner. One block down from the actual light rail subway, the light rail cafe has a family friendly neighborhood atmosphere and the food is always on point! Had the fish sliders and fries which were extremely delicious and filling! Will be back and would refer my friends there! read more

This is a great hidden gem just between the boarders of Jersey City and Bayonne. Lots of drink options and specials daily. Their wings are so good and not too bad a price either. Fries are very good! Unfortunately they are very cheap on the portions for the fries. I also had the nachos one time... I recommend skipping those too. The drinks specials are definitely a plus! After a certain time on the weekends, the kitchen is open but they only do fried foods, (no nachos). Maybe another time I'll give it another shot. Look for my posted photo of the fries... Everyone was super nice and the food was amazing. Only thing was, it took 60 minutes to come to the table, for a party of 2 people. And then, all the folks that sat down after us, received their food before we did. The server gave the excuse that there was only one cook. Huh? Restaurants should do something special for customers when things happen, give them comped appetizers, drinks on the house. Maybe even a coupon to come back with a discount. We are trying to support local small businesses, but our business sure didn't seem that important. read more

I'm relatively new to the Jersey City area, but this is the only reliable (open late) spot I've been able to find, that isn't a diner. You know jersey loves their diners lol. I'm a creature of habit so my order is always the same, and never have I gotten a messed up order from here. It's always quick, hot and cooked/ handles with care. My fav things to get are the fried shrimp, rice & beans, teriyaki salmon plate with rice and greens and when I'm celebrating, a slice of cheesecake. Finally found a hidden gem near Bayonne the Rasta pasta and a la vodka were phenomenal!

There are so many great spots in JC outside of the downtown area and this is certainly one of them. Light Rail Cafe has good food, great service, and awesome drinks, and I definitely recommend paying them a visit. Drinks: I had the red sangria. ENORMOUS glass which is $10. This glass is maybe twice the size of normal sangria pours, and quite potent as well. They have good happy hour prices too- sangria is $7, house wine and domestic beer is $5, margaritas are also around $7, etc. I enjoyed the sangria and it packed quite the punch. They have both red and white. Other options include various infused vodkas, electric lemonade, wine, bottled beer, margaritas, and a full bar. Food: Lots of options. I had the BBQ shrimp wrap. Not at all what I was expecting. I expected shrimp with some barbecue sauce and maybe cheese or coleslaw. Instead, the sauce was kind of creamy and very different from what I expect when I hear "barbecue sauce". But it was super delicious and I really enjoyed it. Shrimp in the really tasty sauce along with lots of grilled red onions. I liked it a lot and would order it again. It comes with either regular fries, cajun fries, sweet potato fries, caesar salad, or garden salad. I had the sweet potato fries and they were good as well. Improvements: - they have a decent bottled beer selection, but some beers on drafts would be awesome - still cash only ( I think they have an atm nearby though) - my food took a LONG time to come out and it wasn't super busy. when the food did arrive the inside of the wrap was insanely hot (like inedibly hot and so much so that some of the filling fell on my arm and it hurt) but the outside was just a plain tortilla/wrap- not grilled or anything Those are mostly minor improvements and suggestions. Overall, I really enjoyed the food and drinks I had at LRC. There is also a nice neighborhood feel here, people seem to know each other and it is nice. They also have a sangria rewards program, I think buy 10 get 1 free which is a bonus as well. read more

This place is amazing! I've had the Penne alla vodka with shrimp in the past, and it was one of the best I've had. The shrimp was so soft and the vodka sauce was flavorful. Came back here again to try something different and it did not disappoint! The Chicken Alfredo was delicious! The chicken was also soft! Both dishes came with garlic bread. Hats off to the chef! Hidden gem in Jersey City. The staff is friendly and attentive, they offer daily lunch specials that are a steal for the quality, and $3 Jameson shots on Monday nights cannot be beaten. The signature drink is their own house made secret recipe sangria, and you can start up a sangria rewards card which I found to be super cute and thoughtful. This place is definitely a neighborhood bar. Pretty much everyone is family here but even so, newcomers are welcomed in warmly. I have been coming here for a while now since moving to New Jersey a year ago. I throughly enjoy al the food items I've had here which includes the salad, chicken fettuccini, lemon pepper wings, shrimp quesadilla amongst many other items. The only problem I have is that the employees including the manager over the extend themselves with people who they are familiar with. The manager speaks to everyone she knows but not other paying patrons. On one occasion, the system was down and I came to pick up my order. She stats oh the system is down you got to wait ---and that was it. Its not what you say but how you say it. Additionally, Many of the bartenders are nice but others will service people they know first. Last week I waited at the bar for about 30 minutes to place an order meanwhile others were being serviced. I like the owner as he is very nice and welcoming. I also love Lisa( I think that is her name ,the host). She is very welcoming to me everyone that enters. I wish all the staff was as welcoming.
